I have owned this machine for exactly 1 year. The coffee is amazing... the machine is beyond disappointing and so is the customer service. The machine drips at the base of grounds basket, where the stainless steel meets the plastic during brewing. The machine drips coffee whenever the carafe is removed, we have to have paper towels ready to catch the drips; these aren't small drips. I exchanged emails with customer service, they wanted parts of the machine returned for repairs and if they couldn't repair they would replace my machine with a refurbished unit. A refurbished unit!!! This isn't a cheap machine and replacing it with a refurbished unit for the money spent isn't an acceptable resolution given the age of the unit. I bought this a few months ago after just using V60 pour-over for years. My wife and I had a kid on our way and decided we needed something a bit easier (but not sacrifice the quality of our morning cup).I love the machine, it's very well designed, you can use the filter "holder" as a pitcher to fill the water resevoir, the carafe keeps the coffee hot, the auto-start in the morning is great, but even without it, the machine is very quick.Very minor flaws I've noticed so far:- When the machine is unplugged even for a second, it looses it's time (this is a simple fix by Breville), only frustrating when using the auto-start function- There is a tiny pour spout in the filter container... it's a nice idea but has created more of a mess for me than anything, it is ... MoreI bought this a few months ago after just using V60 pour-over for years. I have had this machine for 3 years now and I have not experienced any major issues. It works great and keep making great coffee. I ran into an issue this week where there is a design flaw with the carafe that allows for a build up of materials that is nearly impossible to clean. On the inside of the carafe where the plastic and stainless come together there is a gap that is hidden from view. I clean my carafe once a week with a spinning bristle brush but it is nearly impossible to see this gap without a mirror. Today as I was cleaning I discovered some soupy material which led me to attempt to clean it further. I don't know how deep the gap is but you should inspect yours. Mine is disgusting and I want to replace it asap but they are out of stock. I am really ... MoreI have had this machine for 3 years now and I have not experienced any major issues. I've owned this machine for over 3 years and use it daily. Honestly, it has become somewhat of a treasured possession (Christmas gift from my wife), so I figured I owed it to Breville to submit a quick endorsement.I typically brew around 20oz, using the conical filter basket insert on the Gold setting (unfortunately, my wife is just not a coffee drinker, so I feel I rarely get to flex the machine to its full capabilities). I've brewed as little as 15oz with the same setup and as much as 60 with the gold filter basket because of friends visiting. On every occasion, my machine has brewed a delicious pot of coffee. There is good adjustment to be had with different settings (make sure you adjust the setting for which size brewing basket you're using, for example), and ... MoreI've owned this machine for over 3 years and use it daily. There is good adjustment to be had with different settings (make sure you adjust the setting for which size brewing basket you're using, for example), and the cold brew feature is a fun change of pace as well. For maintenance, I run a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar/water through once every few months...aside from wiping down the machine, washing the parts, and occasionally removing the seal ring (the water sprayer thingy) to clean, that is all the care that has been required. Although a bunch of the parts are dishwasher safe, I don't recommend it, as some dishwashing pods seem to have lingering aromas/tastes that they leave around on plastic parts. To address some of what I have read in other reviews:- Yes, you may have a small (tiny) amount of water sit in the very bottom of the tank where the wire screen is.- Yes, the top of the carafe is hard to empty completely because of the plastic lip of the handle.- Yes, if you put 20oz of water in, you will not get 20oz back into the carafe- I can't speak on temperature issues, but I've never had anyWhile I quickly recognized most of these shortcomings, they just have never really become an issue. With regular use, the water in the bottom has never gotten nasty or caused a problem. I make sure I clean the underside of the carafe lip well with a sponge and rinse thoroughly, never had a problem with the few drops of water that may remain. And of course, any coffee maker is going to have a small amount of water left in the filter/grounds...I add in a little extra water to compensate if I want that exact amount. Not to minimize what other people are saying, I have just never had an issue with those things.Well done, Breville. I am happy to see that this machine is still in production and hope you continue to support it for years to come.
I've had BDC455BSS since 06\28\22. It's a nice machine, with lots of features that allow for customization as well as capability, with special adapter, for automated pourover. However, there is very, very little in the manual that explains how to use features such as the Over Ice mode. For example, does Over Ice mode require brewing into the provided carafe or can I use a carafe without a top and can I use Over Ice mode to make Japanese iced coffee (James Hoffman recipe). Do the My Brew settings like the bloom time, flow rate, and temperature settings also affect the Over Ice mode or just the My Brew with pourover off or on modes? I tried calling the support line and creating a support request to get answers to these questions but the customer support agents didn't ... MoreI've had BDC455BSS since 06\28\22. I tried calling the support line and creating a support request to get answers to these questions but the customer support agents didn't seem to have a clue what I was talking about. Great machine if you don't mind just blindly using the product without any real explanation of what the settings can and cannot do. At the current price there should be much better support. I've scoured the internet and YouTube to find demos using the Over Ice mode and My Brew mode with and without pourover but I've found nothing except the standard push the start button after putting the water and coffee in the machine. This product has been available for several years and I'm surprised there are no indepth functional reviews. As a result I cannot recommend purchasing the machine.
I would agree with most of the positive points in other reviews. Overall, it’s a great coffee maker. However, it has a few annoying, problematic issues that I shouldn’t have to deal with in a top-of-the-line, $300 coffee maker, which is why the 3 stars (and why I wouldn’t buy it again):1) [the most annoying] When you rinse out the carafe lid, it’s really difficult to drain all the water out, and you can hear it sloshing around inside (and then you imagine trapped water growing mold). The only way I’ve found to drain out the water (at least to the point of not hearing sloshing) is to hold it over the sink with the “filler” and “pour” holes oriented vertically (basically, turn it 90 degrees) and shake it vigorously up and down for about a full minute until I ... MoreI would agree with most of the positive points in other reviews. Very annoying.2) The lip of the carafe is designed so that it traps a small amount of liquid when you try to pour it all out — so when you rinse and try to empty it, there’s always a little bit of water left at the bottom. You could dry with a towel or let it air dry a long time — but again, annoying.3) Periodically, the reservoir needs to be washed (or at least rinsed to get any sediment out). Because the reservoir can’t be removed from the base unit, this becomes another annoying ordeal, as follows: unplug the base unit, take it over the sink, and tilt it over so that the reservoir is over the sink (and inverted at least slightly downwards, not just horizontal) to be washed, rinsed, and drained. Then (in an acrobatic maneuver), hold the base unit suspended as previously described with one hand while simultaneously with the other hand managing the sink faucet (hopefully with a telescopic hose that can be extended for rinsing the now-inverted reservoir/base unit), the soapy sponge, and the rinsing and draining itself. Again, it makes great coffee, but for $300, I want it to make great coffee and not incite me to shake my fist in the air at Breville.
This unit is actually a replacement for the original one I bought a few months old. It was sent to me because my carafe lid broke (kind of fragile) and it is not available as a spare part and the carafe was on backorder. So the company sent me a completely new unit which is great customer service. In general I am very pleased with this unit, the temperature is important to me since it makes a big difference depending on the beans you use.The blooming timer is great too.I have a few suggestions that could improve this product:1) The spring loaded "bump" on the carafe lid is not really necessary and seems to be very fragile. I think this could be simplified.2) I would like to see on additional lower flow rate to add some "robustness" to the flavor.3) I ... MoreThis unit is actually a replacement for the original one I bought a few months old. Overall makes a great cup of coffee. I mostly use the GOLD brew setting, making a perfect cup of coffee for myself. I love my coffee to be ready when I roll out of bed, so I'm a big fan of the autostart. People mention the loudness of the machine and the fact the coffee doesn't come out PIPING hot, which I would have to agree with, and I love my coffee HOT. I find if you preheat the carafe, it keeps a great temperature, but I generally only brew one 16oz cup. The machine is louder than other machines I've had, but not so much that I really care, it's not waking me up from a sleep or so loud I can't keep a normal conversation with it on, so it doesn't bug me too much. The basket almost always drips one drop when pulling the carafe from underneath. A few little things that are slightly annoying but I don't find take away from the machine itself. Overall, I love my Breville Precision Brewer thus far, and I love all the options it has, including the options to choose your bloom time, temp and create your own personalized brew. I also love that it makes up to 60oz, great for when company comes over! Happy with my purchase :)
I've gone through about 4 different highly rated coffee makers and I've settled on the Breville. It is the smartest of them all. The construction is sturdy and the parts slide in and out easily. Cleanup is also quite easy. The only flaw is that the shower head is small and has fewer holes as compared to the other machines that I tried. Still, all the other features of this one kind make up for that. This is easily fixable by Breville as the shower head is removable and all Breville has to do is add more holes on the perimeter of the shower head.So why is this important you may ask. Well, I'm glad you did. What I'm noticing is that because the water stream is concentrated towards the center of the coffee grounds, those on the perimeter don't get properly ... MoreI've gone through about 4 different highly rated coffee makers and I've settled on the Breville. I'll be the first one in like to purchase it!
I received this item for my 33rd birthday in May 2022, less than 3 months ago. The machine requested that I descale today, which I did with brewright cleaner per instructions. After descaling, it started to heat during the brew cycle, failed and beeped 3 times and went back to standy. I noticed when I first brewed a thermos that condensation built up behind the lcd screen. To remedy this I took off the reservoir's clear lid and and hoped it would dry out inside. Looking into the reservoir I also notice what looks like rust around one of the two valves that lead up to the shower head. These valves are completely sealed in plastic but one is showing rust that can be seen through the clear plastic of the reservoir. This is a beautiful coffee maker and the coffee is good, but there are several moisture retention issues that go beyond what I would consider normal. I've sent this item back for replacement already but I'm very concerned about what appears to be fatal faults with the coffee machine's design and the internal condensation.
