We purchased one of these toasters approximately 17 -18 years ago from Officeworks in Australia. It has been the best toaster we have ever owned. Unfortunately the poor thing is starting to come to the end of it's life as we have to put the toast down a couple of times to get reasonable toast and it's a little uneven. We will be purchasing another one. If there was a toaster hall of fame, this toaster would in it. I was so impressed with our toaster I purchased one for the lunch room at work about 12 years ago and I believe it's still going strong, despite being hammered by about 20 staff who are not known for being gentle. (I left the company 2 years ago) This is an honest review and I'm in no way being paid for this review.

I splurged on this toaster 6 years ago but since I only use it occasionally, it has had about a year's normal use. I loved all the features, especially the long slot, and even recommended it to others. A few months ago the toaster function stopped working (I can still add "a bit more" to warm up bread, but no toasting). I HATE discarding something for the sake of a cheap soldering job, but I see from others' comments that this is a frequent problem for this model. I had hoped to find a Troubleshooting section where I could "reset"the functions, but, alas! My only previous experience with Breville was a fancy microwave, and it also died too soon. I have learned my lesson now. I will try to find someone who can repair the toaster but I am not hopeful. Buyer beware!

I’ve just taken it back to point of purchase at David Jones, and have been told it needs to be sent off for inspection, possible repair or replacement which can take up to 4 weeks. They do not replace on the spot. In the meantime I have to buy a new toaster anyway as the kids and family need to eat. This is an absolute stitch up by Breville! So now I’m off to Target to buy a $40 toaster which lasted 10 years prior to this one. Purchased toaster end of December 2022. Toast came out burnt on the lightest setting. Called beginning of January and was told we could get a replacement. New toaster arrived yesterday. Instruction book suggested a setting of '3.5' for the first slice......toast was burnt. Reduced the setting to '2' for the second slice.......not burnt but too dark for our liking. Further reduced the setting to '1'....came out what I would call 'medium'. Too bad this machine can not produce a lightly toasted piece of bread. In addition, we noticed that one side of the slice was perfectly even, while the bottom corners of the other side were darker. We will not be buying any Breville product again.
We bought this toaster as it was the perfect fit for the space I wanted it in…we LOVED the easy up, the “lift and look” and “a bit more” features! I couldn’t have been happier…until the heat elements no longer functioned properly. I called to see if there were replacement parts or if there was a recall (since I noticed MULTIPLE reviews about the same problem once mine quit). I’m not sure I want to spend another $200 ($150 after the 25% discount offered) plus tax, for a new one, based on the likelihood it would happen again. So disappointed. I’m giving 2 stars for the less than two years that it actually worked so wonderfully. They should have a star rating for “while it worked” = 5+, and then “after it quit working” = 0 stars. Absolutely smitten with this toaster. The mechanical lower/rising of the bread is spectacular in itself! The even toasting on both sides and universally across the whole side is something we had missed with our last toasters all resulting in unevenly cooked toast, with hot spots even. The LED of the timing of the toaster is useful as it counts down indicating just how long you have before it arises like a mystical figure of happiness waiting for buttered goodness!! The crumpet/fruit toast feature is not used in our household but may be useful to others seeking to cook 1 side more than the other. This toaster partners with the Breville Smart Kettle bought at the same time.

This toaster is priced around $175US which should mean the toaster is of the highest quality. The body of the toaster is solid and very safe, especially in terms of no hot spots which could cause a burn. Unfortunately one of the toasting elements stopped working after 17 months. I make about 4 slices of toast per week, so it was not from overuse; rather it was from poor quality. Breville did not back up their toaster by replacing it. Instead they offered a discount of 25% on the purchase of a replacement. I'm going back to buying $30US toasters every two years rather than purchasing Breville.
My original purchases was made in Sep. 2019 and the unit lasted into the summer of 2021 before the inner heating elements stopped working correctly. As with others, the bread would only toast on one side. As with others, the inner heating elements worked fine in bagel mode. To Breville's credit, they did provide me a replacement in July of 2021. In the Oct/Nov 2022 timeframe, the same issue started to return and now in Dec 2022 the issue is here for good. The unit only toasts via the outer heating elements unless it is set to bagel mode. Clearly with this issue being persistent for many users there is a design flaw that should exist in a $200 appliance. I am very disappointed with what is otherwise a fantastic toaster.
This is the most expensive toaster we have ever purchased. We bought it based on the high number of 4-5 star reviews we read. So far, one month later, this bells & whistles toaster, hasn’t let us down. It toasts evenly and we love the “a bit more” function & haven’t tired of watching our bread slowly descend into the toaster. I haven’t tried the crumpet function because I prefer my crumpets crunchy on both sides. We like raisin toast but we’re still unsure if we’re choosing the fruit bread or crumpet function. We think we need to press twice! We just use the lowest browning level. Overall though we’re very satisfied with our toaster.
