The scan function is the main reason why I made the purchase in the first place. We love our existing brother printer, so when we needed a second printer, we chose this model (1 less paper tray than our existing printer/scanner), boy what a freaking mistake. Wish I had read reviews on this model and not went off our past experience with this brand. Here goes the saga:Part 1 - we purchased the mfc-j6555dw new from our local office depot. hoping it would be as great as our current, 5 yr old brother printer/scanner. boy were we wrong. after less than 4 months, it stopped scanning and threw a "cant scan - A5" error code. at this point, it would beep incessantly at you and only copy, no scanning. called customer service - only thing they can do is replace this almost brand new unit with a refurbished unit. not super excited about that, but they ship the replacement.Part 2 - 1st replacement arrives, we go thru the set up (literally plugging it in and putting the ink it) and as soon as the test print page comes thru - it sends the dreaded "cant scan - A5" error code which flips over to a "cant scan - A F" code. fortunately, enough for me, I've been to this rodeo. Call customer service, they cannot solve the issue with out the machine - so they send another, refurbished replacement, for my <4 month old printer/scanner. at this point we have 2 useless printers stacked in the office.Part 3 - 2nd replacement printer arrives, we go thru the set up (literally plugging it in and putting the ink it) and as soon as the test print page comes thru - it sends the dreaded "cant scan - A5" error code. From past experience, I know to unplug the machine, wait a minute and plug back in to let it restart. So I do just that. Now the machine literally will not turn on. Completely crazy. It initially threw the same error code and now simply wont power up. Right now we are 0 for 3. Fortunately enough for me, I've been to this rodeo twice before. Call customer service - they cannot believe or understand that the machine literally wont power up. So I lug the machine to 3 other wall outlets, unplug lamps (that are on), plug the printer in and it still has no power. So she says that they will send another, refurbished replacement, for my <4 month old printer/scanner. yay. at this point we have 3 useless printers (and 2 boxes) stacked in the office. So we have 3 faulty printers and have no idea what to do with them. We also have over 8 hours of time spent trying to figure out why all of these brother mfc-j6555dw units just wont work. What are the odds that I got the only 3 faulty units? Insane. So at this point, we purchased this printer/scanner once, Brother has sent 2 and is sending a third replacement printer/scanner. I don't understand why brother would not replace this printer with a similar Brother printer that has a better operational track history (I asked for a similar unit to get swapped out for this unit, so I can get off this crazy train of poor quality product and was told no)? Seems like a crazy business decision. I'll provide an update (Part 4) when we receive the 3rd replacement printer - to update you all to see if it actually works. 10:1 its a dud.Part 4 - the 3rd replacement showed up. Set everything up and after 24 hours, it hasnt thrown an error code or stopped scanning yet.I still would never buy a brother mfc-j6555dw again. You will thank me later.I do not recommend this product.

Call customer service - we spend almost 10 minutes where the agent is asking me to run thru different diagnostics on the machine, because she simply cannot wrap their head around the fact that it literally wont power up. I asked if there was a different model that they could swap it out for, she said no, she could only replace what we purchased - so i asked why they keep sending defective machines to replace a defective machine? I asked her what do we do with all these printers, she said take back to office depot! I said i only purchased 1 faulty printer from them, brother sent me the other 2 faulty printers. So we have 3 faulty printers and have no idea what to do with them. We also have over 8 hours of time spent trying to figure out why this brother mfc-j6555dw is such a piece of garbage. Whomever they have assembling the scanning portion/functionality of this unit is either unskilled, untrained or high. What are the odds that I got the only 3 faulty units? Insane. So at this point, we purchased this printer/scanner for $329.99. Brother has sent 2 and is sending a third replacement printer/scanner. So why would brother not replace this printer with a similar one that has a better operational track history (I asked for a similar unit to get swapped out - instead of them sending me another faulty printer that is total trash, so I can get off this crazy train of poor quality product and was told no)? At msrp (3 printers, at $329.99 = $989.97 - plus brother has paid to ship us 3 of the 4 printers. seems like a crazy business decision. After having a Brother MFC 8710-DW for 12 years which I loved and it probably just needing new rollers but unable to find anyone who worked on printers, had to buy a new printer. It does print quickly; wireless connection was a repetitious attempt; and being accustomed to "laser" some mind reminder to not touch print too soon due to this being an "inkjet". I'm fine with printing in black & white but sister wanted ability to print color as well, thus going to an inkjet which is more affordable than laser color printer, although you are looking at the middle $300s for this unit.

[Rewarded Review] A Long Way From The Days of Sewing Machines

The Brother MFC-J6555DW printer is part of Brother’s INKvestment Tank line of printers and is next to top-of-the line of six printers (in the U.S. market). The one model higher has two pull-out paper trays on the front of the printer instead of one like the J6555 and also supports Near Field Communication which the J6555 does not. The J6555 is obviously aimed at the business user, but is not priced out of the range of most home users. Something that might be a bigger concern for some home users is the weight (44 & 1/2 pounds) and size - with all trays expanded and paper support flaps extended, this printer measures about 22 & 1/2” wide, 34” deep (front to back), and 16” high. The actual footprint of the machine where it sits on a surface is about 22 & 1/2” x 19”, ... MoreThe Brother MFC-J6555DW printer is part of Brother’s INKvestment Tank line of printers and is next to top-of-the line of six printers (in the U.S. market). The actual footprint of the machine where it sits on a surface is about 22 & 1/2” x 19”, and it is 12” high when all trays and flaps are stowed. The power cord is permanently attached and is not detachable with a female C13 end like a lot of computer products have (this might be a concern for someone wishing to use an existing power cord because of cord routing). If you find the need to print, copy, scan, or fax documents up to 11” x 17”, this is the printer for you. I don’t know if I have ever seen a more versatile or full-featured printer. The print quality in both black & white and color is top notch as you would expect of just about any high end printer from a major manufacturer, so I don’t see the need to comment much on that - text is clear, crisp, and well formed. The quality of photo printing is more than satisfactory to my eye when using glossy photo paper, and while it might not match professional photo printing, it makes up for that with the convenience of doing it at home and not having to wait.I found it interesting that the Brother iPrint&Scan app on my iPhone will not work with the J6555 printer and it refers me to use another app, the Brother Mobile Connect app, but my MacBook Pro laptop DOES work with the iPrint&Scan app. While I’m sure there must be a good reason, I find the inconsistency a little annoying. Like virtually every electronic product nowadays, this printer does not come with full, printed documentation in the box, just a Quick Setup Guide, Product Safety Guide, Reference Guide, warranty information, and a piece of lightweight cardboard that might easily get overlooked or discarded if you don’t look at the flip side and see that it is “Maintenance Sheet” that you should save. Besides starter-size ink cartridges, the only other “accessory” in the box is a phone cord to utilize the fax capability of the machine. The electronic PDF “Online User’s Guide” (also downloadable) is 651 pages long, but most of those pages are only 25 to 50% documentation and the rest of the page is blank space, so it is not quite as intimidating as it first appears. That said, there is a LOT of information aimed at users that need the plethora of features this printer is capable of - business users mostly and those that do a lot of faxing, such as the medical and law professions. While the all-in-one printer is a wonderful tool for the typical home user, fax capability is probably something most people do not need or cannot even use as a lot of the population has done away with their landline telephone.A few general observations, the main paper tray will hold 250 pages of paper (half of a ream), the remote print feature to print while you are away from home or work will require a Brother Online Account, if you are going to connect the machine using a USB, Ethernet, or phone cable, the jacks are not on the outside of the machine (they are under the scanner cover), and the manual warns against using self-adhesive envelopes and “bond paper” for two-sided printing, as both of these items are too thick and can cause paper handling issues. Also of interest is that the print head will periodically clean itself to maintain print quality the next time you have to use the printer - this is done even if the printer is turned off, as long as the printer remains connected to power. That is a sweet feature if you don’t use your printer regularly. The only real misstep I found in design is that the three menu “buttons” (Back, Home, and Cancel) are part of the touchscreen and are not physical buttons like the “dial pad”, and for some reason the designers chose to not backlight them. While this might not be necessary in a well-lit office environment, it was one of the first things I noticed in the home setting where you might not have the room lights on very bright. For some people speed of their printer from hitting “Print” to finished product might be important and I did run a few tests. Printing a 4” x 6” color photo from my MacBook using AirPrint, over a robust Wi-Fi network netted a 62 second wait. Text was much faster, especially if the printer was not in “sleep” mode - when the printer was “awake”, it took 6 seconds to spit out a black & white page of text. In sleep mode, I had to wait 35 seconds before the same print job was done. Two-sided printing also takes slightly longer than single-side because of the gymnastics the paper has to do. A four page B&W text document took 11 seconds to print on four sheets of paper and 17 seconds to print on both sides of two pieces of paper - a small penalty to pay for less paper consumption.Anyone looking for a versatile ink-jet printer without having to buy small, expensive ink cartridges on a regular basis, will love the capabilities of the Brother MFC-J6555DW INKvestment Tank printer and it should fulfill their needs for a long time. My previous experience with a Brother color laser printer for the past four years has shown the brand to be nothing but a serious contender for quality and reliability.

Considering the time I have spent in the past trying to rip jammed paper out of hard-to-reach areas, this is a big plus for me.Printing is amazingly fast! It takes about 3-5 seconds from clicking print on the computer for the INKvestment Brother to complete printing in regular quality. Of course, it takes slightly longer if choosing the high quality setting. There does appear to be some slight bleeding and fraying in prints with thick outlines, like in coloring pages, but for simple words on paper it is hardly notable. The words are clear, crisp, and easy to read. This is honestly a game-changer for the general office work I do, which is printing out forms, receipts, and plans. This not only increases my level of productivity, but it allows those that are waiting on me to be in and out quicker. Double-sided printing is outstandingly quick as well, there is no delay in waiting for the ink to dry, the printer just sucks the paper back in and continues. Print in color does takes longer, a color intense photo takes about 30 seconds, it seems the machine waits for the ink to dry as it goes. The main printer portion prints lengthwise. The multimedia tray on the back is extremely helpful for making quick-printed envelopes and fits and array of sizes. Now for the scanning, I am absolutely floored by how amazing the scans come out from this machine. Never in my life have I witness a more beautiful scan, I had really lost hope that this was possible in all-in-one printers. From office to home printers, scans tend to come out sideways no matter how straight you place the paper. Not with this printer! It scans crisp, clear, high-definition scans in both the flatbed and the document feeder. And the speed is amazing. I scanned 11 documents in 35 seconds through the feeder, no issues, no jams, all beautiful and straight. The feeder takes them in like a dream. For black and white it’s perfectly clear and crisp, for color it’s pretty good but definitely not the best option for scanning photos. First off, the machine has a tendency to oversaturate colors when under the document scan preset, which is actually very helpful with some documents to prevent a faded appearance. Using the “photo” preset will ensure accurate skin tone and overall saturation in photos. That said, even with the higher dpi, there will still be a grainy appearance. This is mostly only evident in photos with skin though, it looks nearly perfect when scanning anything else in color. Just ensure the proper dpi is set, otherwise where will be artifacts such as zig-zag rainbow lines appearing throughout the image. This is for both feeder and flatbed, I just have not used the feeder for photos due to bending. In terms of construction, the machine itself is very well-built. The sliders that adjust depending on paper size move with such ease. All the material feels durable and of quality. The touch screen responds quickly to touch. As for size, it has a pretty large footprint and requires extra space above, behind, and in front of it for the opening and extendable trays. It is somewhat heavy but manageable, yet despite this it does require two people to move and carry due to its width.Overall, I am very satisfied with this printer for its purposes. It really sets a new bar of what a printer can do and what quality performance a printer is capable. Even more noteworthy is the main purpose of preventing eco-waste by making larger, long-lasting ink cartridges. I definitely recommend this to anyone that needs a work-horse printer for everyday tasks.

[Rewarded Review] Excellent printer with advanced features

I’ve installed many printers going back to the dot-matrix era and this was by far the easiest experience I’ve had. The printer’s hi-res color touchscreen walked me through the physical setup such as installing the ink cartridges and running alignment checks. Then it was a simple matter on my PC of going to Brother’s setup web page and downloading the installer. This was strictly a wifi installation, and I’m not sure how it did it, but the installer was able to find the printer and configure it onto my network without my entering anything manually – not even a password! The rest of the software package, including drivers, scanning utility, and other tools installed with no problems. This is a very fast and flexible printer with a wide variety of paper sizes and types supported. We have plain letter paper in the main tray and then use the multi-function tray in the rear for special printing such as sheets of labels. The rear tray opens at an angle and is quite usable without having to have much clearance behind the printer. This is our first printer that uses “ink tank” technology and I’m anxious to see how much more cost-effective it is with regard to ink cost. In the past we’ve used a laser printer for our day-to-day printing and an inkjet only when we needed color, but if the rated page count is close to accurate we’ll start using this printer by default.Scanning is very quick as it doesn’t have to warm up as my previous scanners always had to do. It will also be nice for scanning large-format pages up to 11”x17” in size. One criticism is that the included scanning utility is pretty basic in features. Specifically, it doesn’t have a “preview” feature that would let me select a specific area to scan such as for scanning a particular illustration without the rest of the page. However, the scanner can be used directly from more powerful apps such as Acrobat, Paintshop Pro, etc.I am also quite impressed with its compatibility with mobile devices and cloud technology. For example, the printer can be connected to a number of your cloud accounts such as Dropbox and Google Drive and can then scan documents, convert them to PDF or JPEG, and upload to those accounts just using the front panel. Likewise, it can download and print documents from the cloud. Brother’s “Mobile Connect” app is what is used on your smartphone or tablet, with versions for both Android and Apple available. There are quite a number of settings to learn about, both on the machine and in the drivers and other software. However, for basic usage to print color or b&w on letter size paper it’s good to go right out of the box with the default settings. I’ve always preferred printed user guides but those are gone forever and the guides on the Brother web site seem quite good. I’m sure that I’ll be trying out this printer’s other features as I go along, but after just a few days’ usage I’m quite satisfied with it.One thing to note about this printer is that it is probably intended for offices or small businesses and is very large compared to typical “home” printers. It fits OK in our “home office” room but be sure to view the specifications and be sure it will fit where you intend it to go. Note in the photo the MFC-J6555DW next to our old Brother HL-2270DW laser printer. For us, it’s well worth the extra space.

[Rewarded Review] Great printer and scanner!

I am loving this Brother inkjet printer! Despite it being the largest and most complex household printer I have interacted with yet, it has so far been the easiest to work with by far. The setup was very easy and it nearly set itself up by itself. The only thing I had to do was connect to my home network, add the ink and paper and tell it what paper I added, and scan the print test sheets. From the time I opened the box to the time I was printing something was 10 minutes at the most. A huge plus to the large size of this unit is the enormous built in scanner. When I opened the cover and saw the size of the scanner space my jaw literally dropped. It's the largest I have seen aside from maybe huge office printers, but even then this scanner may be larger. As a photographer who often scans and prints photos, this has me so excited! Loading the ink cartridges and adding paper to the tray is very easy, and the user interface on the screen seems great so far. There are no sensitivity issues and the screen size seems sufficient enough. The one thing I noticed is that the actual print job is a little slow compared to many other printers I have used, but the quality comes out great so I cannot complain about the amount of time it takes to print it. Considering it is an inkjet printer, I was also pretty happy with the actual photo printing capabilities of this printer. I tried printing a few 4x6 glossy photos and they came out pretty decent. I would not buy this as a photo printer though, the quality is not there to for it to be a mainly photo printer. Also took me a few tries to learn that the 4x6 photos needed to be put in upside down in order to be printed on the correct side, I made that mistake easily. Overall this printer is excellent for most households and if scanner size is a priority for you, this is an excellent option!

First impression: What an impressive printer, beautifully designed, with awesome print quality, and which supports printing letter-sized, A4, legal-sized (11x17), and A3 paper, and more, on both sides (duplex/2-sided) of paper. In general, all machine settings can be performed locally via the printer’s 3.5” (8.8cm) LCD control panel and via remote through Web-based management (mobile app or desktop). It includes 1 set of starter cartridges (4 separate ones) which are estimated to last one year. You can connect to the printer via Ethernet (cable not included), wireless LAN, and USB (cable not included). There is a phone cable included, though.Basic features include:• [1 star] Automated Document Feeder (ADF); it supports all paper sizes for copying, scanning, and faxing; however, the document feeder does not support 2-sided documents, which is a rather large inconvenience to me. Most documents I need to scan and/or want to make copies of are 2-sided. The only workaround for 2-sided printouts is to manually do that using the scanner glass which is very time-consuming. Interestingly enough, the LCD control panel provides 2-sided copy/scan/fax feeder options but shouldn’t show these as they are applicable to the Brother J6940DW and J6955DW printers only. If you try to use these options you will be informed the AFD cannot handle 2-sided documents.• [5 Stars] Printing documents from Windows and macOS, the iPrint&Scan utility, macOS AirPrint, email attachments (up to 10 various file types including PDF and JPG), and from a USB flash drive; note that the default is single-side print, and as such, if you want to print on both sides (duplex/2-sided) best verify your printer properties on your Windows or macOS system are set to 2-sided print prior to printing.• [5 Stars] Scanning documents; a very rich selection of supported devices is provided to which the scans are being stored: Scan to Mobile (where your smartphone does not need to be connected to the network the printer is connected to, scan to a USB flash drive attached to the printer (use your own), and/or scan to a defined folder on a SharePoint server. Note that it scans the actual document size, meaning, it won’t convert, for example, A4 to Letter, or Legal to Letter.• [5 stars] Copying documents; cool options include enlarging or reducing copied images (from 25% to 400%) and “fit-to-page” (does not support legal-size documents)• [Not tested and not rated] Faxing (send & receive) documents with typical options including fax reports. Use the PC-Fax utility for Windows and/or macOS (via AirPrint only) to send and receive faxes directly from/to your computer. The modem speed is 33,600 bits per second (bps).• Total score: (3 * 5) stars + 1 star = 16 stars / 4 categories = 4 stars for this printerSetting up the printer• Easy to unbox thanks to the use of a bad that enables you to lift the printer from the box.• The Quick Setup Guide is included in the box. When following all instructions in this step-by-step guide, initially through the printer LCD control display and then the mobile app to connect the printer to my home network wirelessly, I did not encounter any problems. All instructions were straightforward and easy to follow (note: I am not a printer setup expert).• Note when using the mobile app to connect the printer to your home network, you will be prompted to temporarily join the printer’s own network after which reverts to your home network after the printer has connected to the home network.• Right after the printer is connected to the home network successfully, it checks for updated Firmware and will prompt you to install it when one is found. The green LED blinks during Firmware Update; when finished updating, the printer reboots.• Note that the printer will only print when all cartridges are installed and are above low ink level regardless of whether or not you want to print in color or black/white.Brother Mobile Connect App (iPhone and Android-based mobile phones)• What makes this printer especially practical and powerful to use is the mobile app, Brother Mobile Connect”, downloadable from the Apple Store for iPhone devices and/or Google Play Store for Android devices, and the corresponding desktop app for Windows and macOS which are downloadable from setup.brothers.com.• Using Brother Mobile Connect on an iPhone allows you to browse through the files you have in your iCloud. You can select the ones you want to print (e.g., PDF files, Photo files, etc.) and change printer settings to your needs (e.g., 2-sided printing, number of copies, print quality, etc.)• The app also walks you through Scan and Copy options and prompts you for the file format you want to save your scan, PDF or JPG, and allows you to share the scanned document via text message, email, etc.Using the Brother Web Connect utility, you are provided with options to print and download documents as well as save scanned documents to Google Drive, box, Dropbox, Evernote, and OneNote.

[Rewarded Review] Store quality printing, very fast and affordable

After going through a variety of printer brands over the past couple decades, this is the second Brother printer I have decided on investing in over four years. Brother brand printers are now firmly locked in as my go to manufacturer for a variety of reasons. First off, and one of the main reasons, the cost of ink has always left a bitter taste in my mouth as, for years, it always seemed to be cheaper to just buy a whole new printer versus investing nearly $100 in ink for a machine that was already out of date. That is definitely not the case with the Brother INKvestment all-in-one series printer line. I was still using the Brother printer I got in 2018 and never once had to replace the ink; I still had about 10% ink left before I got this new MFC-J6555DW model. I didn’t exactly use the printer daily or in bulk but it has handled amazingly and never had any issues with in besides having to perform the standard head cleaning and maintenance, as expected. The advertisement claims the printer has enough ink included in the box to last a year but I would bet that it will last much longer with our household use, even with five people in the house and children printing coloring pages almost daily. Having owned the new J6555DW model only for a short period, I would expect this one will handle just as well, or potentially even better, than my last one that is almost five years old. Some notable specifications are the paper tray can hold up to 250 pages, the multipage copy, scan or fax feeder can handle up to 50 pages, you can print and scan a variety of page sizes including legal 11” x 17” paper and photo size paper, the document glass size is oversized measuring 11.7” x 17” for those larger projects, it has a convenient 3.5” color touch screen that is very easy to navigate and set up, can connect to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, Apple AirPrint, USB 2.0 or wired to a PC or laptop using a USB cable. At this stage in technology, Brother has made wireless printing a breeze using their software you can install on your PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone. One concern that might be a hard stop for some is this new model is HUGE in comparison to my last printer; I would honestly say a good 40-50% larger. I did not know that upon ordering this new model and it does not come close to fitting in the same space as the old model. It measures nearly two feet in width, a foot high and about 19” deep (over 30” if you have both trays out). That being said, this all-in-one is a huge beast for a reason. I have never used an at home office printer that performed like a small business office printer. Standard color and black and white page printing is extremely fast however it’s the photo printing that really caught me by surprise. Not only were the prints on 4” x 6” glossy printer paper crystal clear, up to 1200 x 4800 dpi, they were spit out faster than any at home printer I have ever experienced. It was as if I sent an order to the local print shop to distribute to family members, display in a frame or put in a photo album but done in record time right in the convenience of my house. No more pricey trips to the local print shop. I can print 30 pages, color or black and white, in a minute and the scanner is just as fast. After owning just about every brand of printer over decades, there is a reason I don’t expect to switch to another manufacturer besides Brother. Their printing products are of great quality, very durable, and easy to use and have recommended them to many others in the printing market over nearly the past five years.
