I really do like this scent! a lot more than I initially thought I would. And by each passing day I use this ; I fall in love a little more. I love this particular scent for almost any time of the year except maybe very hot summer days. The scent is intoxicating and very well blended. A sweet fruity/floral scent livened up with the woodsy notes in the background; a very round scent without any sharpness. Incredibly versatile. My boyfriend goes crazy for it after he gets home, and I have had it on for over 5 hours at that point. He grabs the nape of my neck and just delves in face first with a big wiff. In such a sexy anamlistic way. It is feminine enough to stand alone thanks to the angelic softer notes, but would make a great unisex fragrance, also!

I received a sample from Nordstrom on my last visit and was looking for something different from my normal floral or gourmand loves. I had heard of byredo but hadn't actually tried anything, I'm glad my introduction to the brand was so pleasant! I was worried seeing that this scent had leather notes in it as well, I hate the smell. I had tried the ombre leather from Tom Ford and had wanted to gag but was happily surprised that this was so much more then that. It doesn't smell like leather at all to me. It does have a certain amount of depth to it and it's so fun to explore said depth! Despite not being particularly fond of any notes in Bal dâAfrique aside from cedar, I recently became fixated on this fragrance and blind bought a full bottle after many internal battles with myself (A SmĂŠagol/Gollum situation, where Bal dâAfrique was my precious). The reviews that I stalked had me expecting something of a pineapple mango creamsicle scented bar of soap. Incidentally, I donât experience anything close to that. It begins as a nearly underripe lemon, but calms down to a scent strikingly resemblant of August, a discontinued Hollister fragrance marketed for women in the 2000âs. It was, in reality, completely gender neutral, but much too original and apparently ahead of its time; it was discontinued after a what I imagine must have been a successful but short period of availability. Heavy citrus opening that mellows into a cedar/vetiver dominant woodsy heart with smokey ambered facets. 100% unisex. I donât experience any black currant, tropical, or floral qualities. No creamy feels. I can smell the âivory soapâ in the drydown, but only with discernment, probably wouldnât have associated it with soap had I not read that others made that interpretation. As far as vetiver goes, I wouldnât think this contained any, had I not read the notes listed. I havenât yet learned to appreciate or even tolerate vetiver as a focus note, aside from its use in Angel Muse, so I tend to..hate it deeply. Like I said though, thereâs no typical assault by vetiver here, I think it pairs exceptionally well with cedar and amber to contribute to the dry woodsy effect. In my unrefined but honest opinion, this is simplicity at its finest. The longevity is much better than anticipated on me. In the equitorial heat/humidity, I get 5 hours before I need to compulsively reapply, and Iâm more than happy to bring the big awkward bottle with me to reapply prn. Regrettably, the sillage is as tragic as they say. Still absolutely worth a try, and in my opinion itâs worth a blind buy, for anyone. It really is a scent both intriguing and unique; fit for any season, day or night. Easily signature material.

Byredo Bal d'Afrique is a fragrance that exudes warmth, sweetness, and exoticism. The scent opens with a burst of zesty citrus and tangy bergamot, blended with the fresh green notes of neroli and African marigold. As it settles, the fragrance unveils a soft and sensual heart of violet, jasmine, and cyclamen, rounded out by the warm and comforting base notes of vetiver, musk, and amber. Overall, Byredo Bal d'Afrique is a captivating and versatile fragrance that can be worn for any occasion, from a casual day out to a special evening event. The scent is long-lasting and has moderate sillage, so it won't overpower those around you. It's a great choice for those who appreciate unique and sophisticated scents
Bal d'Afrique by Byredo My rating: âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸ Jack was a surprise guest to this photo. He obviously gives this 5 stars too. I absolutely adore this perfume. I love the lemon, bergamot, vetiver, and violet notes. Itâs cheerful and warm. Clean and happy but also crisp and ambery. It feels like a warm, sunny day. It lasts a very long time for me which is also a huge plus. Bal d'Afrique by Byredo is a Amber Woody fragrance for women and men. Bal d'Afrique was launched in 2009. The nose behind this fragrance is JĂŠrĂ´me Epinette. Top notes are Tagetes, Amalfi Lemon, Black Currant, Bergamot and African Orange flower; middle notes are Violet, Cyclamen and Jasmine; base notes are Vetiver, Amber, Musk and Virginia Cedar
Divine scent. This is not what I expected at all, but I am blown away by it each time I reverently spray it on my wrist.I confess that I blind-bought it having not been able to test it out anywhere. The notes sounded so appealing to me, and I was willing to take the risk. Phew! I do actually adore it. I get the boozy jam note other reviewers mentioned, and the opening is similar to JM's Velvet Rose and Oud (for a few seconds). Then it becomes a very powerful sweet scent for about half an hour, before it calms down to a smoky, milky skin scent. It's certainly unusual. Despite the intense sweetness at the beginning, I cannot imagine this on a teenage girl; I'm in my early twenties and I barely get away with it. Despite the intense sweetness at the beginning, I cannot imagine this on a teenage girl; I'm in my early twenties and I barely get away with it. It's a mature sweetness due the smoky, tobacco-like notes underneath, and refuses to be linear. Each time I sniff my wrists or down my jumper, I get a new note. I imagine this perfume will change wildly with the seasons or depending on your skin chemistry. If you are looking for a safe, functional, every day perfume then you definitely need to test this first. It's not your typical power-house workday perfume, but could make for a striking signature if you can pull it off! I usually think of perfumes such as these as more artistic concepts, like unusually cut clothes and bizarre jewellery that look breath-taking, but you're not sure if you personally can wear it!It doesn't smell like a library (while we can enjoy the smell of old books and wood varnish, it's probably not what we want to smell on ourselves or other humans), but it does conjure up the aesthetic of a well-read, scholarly woman who wears romantic blouses and pleated trousers, keeps her hair styled in an artfully messy up-do, carelessly applies flawless red lipstick... She probably smokes as well. But this is my impression, and as this strikes me as such a changeable fragrance, I would be fascinated as to how it develops on other women and men!Definitely not a safe blind buy, but in this case my gamble paid off! The dry down on me is subtle, but casually powerful. After three spritzes (both wrists and neck) yesterday morning, I was still cocooned in sultry softness when I woke up today.
I am on my 4th bottle of this. I love it, clearly. It's a beautiful warm woody smell, I get many compliments on it. I do sometimes consider trying another smell from Byredo as so many ofhtem smell great, but I always end up repurchasing this one. It's a classic, I hope they never stop making it. I would LOVE to have it in a smaller bottle though as although you can decant for holidays, this is a quality and thus heavy glass bottle.
I went into a Space NK pre-COVID and had a test of this fragrance. The memory of that lingered throughout lockdown as something I wanted to go back and test - I couldn't quite commit to purchasing online. Last week, I finally went back and tried in person and this scent was everything I remembered. I'm hopeless at describing fragrances but will try! This is not a heady headache inducing fragrance which keeps knocking you in the face each time you move, it's a fresh but yet sophisticated and slightly dark scent. I'd say it's the colour purple somehow....it's a grown up fragrance and has a very sexy undertone. It is warm but not cloying or overly heavy like a "library" fragrance. This is my signature scent if I ever had to say I had one for sure. I haven't smelt ANYTHING like this. I'm not into lemon scents but this is an exception and arguably my favourite perfume out of the approx. 100 perfumes I have in my collection. I'm a fraghead...yes. The lemon in this is sweet and gentle, beautifully blended with the floral and woody notes. Absolutely amazing. Price is jarring and way to high, but I'd purchase again without hesitation because I have to always have it. Gorgeous
It's difficult to describe but this perfume just smells like old money. It makes me think of a house with beautiful wooden floors, a decadent lounge room with a fireplace and old books lining the walls. It makes me think of an expensive liquor in a crystal glass, walking through a backyard orchard, a fancy leather bag (we all know the one I mean) and big fat diamond earrings. It's very strong so one spray works for me, but it lingers all day. I get many compliments on this and whenever my friends come over they always treat themselves to a spray. This would be a great occasion perfume but also if you're like me and like a little drama, this could also work as a daily.
