Call of Duty - World at War

(2,360 reviews)

Call of Duty: World at War has a lot to live up to. The venerable Call of Duty franchise was taken to new heights by Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4, with DS specialist n-Space doing a cracking job of the DS version, so expectations are high. So, what does World at War, developed by returning developer n-Space, have to offer? Well, the series has also gone back to the war that made the Call of Duty series famous - WWII. Rather than tread the same old battlefields, however, players will be thrust into the muddied boots of Russian and American soldiers on multiple fronts. A heavy emphasis has been put on the Pacific Theatre, meaning players will have to take on Japanese soldiers deploying kamikaze attacks, ambush tactics and Banzai charges. This also means a different slant on gameplay. You won't be charging into rooms to blast all and sundry so much as you'll be crawling through jungle undergrowth to make your kill. As with CoD4, play is rounded out by seven mini-events, with challenges such as mine defusion, mortar strikes on enemy bunkers and manning an anti-aircraft gun to take out enemy planes. Online play makes a return, offering those wanting to make use of the DS's Wi-Fi connection the chance to take part in four way multi-player battles. For the more dedicated player, there's also the opportunity to track your stats online. The world needs you for fighting duties again. Time to step up.

A great game to play that will give you hours of fun!

I used to play this game on the Xbox 360 4-5 years ago and loved the multiplayer and zombies feature on this game. I bought it for the PC for the nostalgia of playing it again. Multiplayer is fun to play and still very active with the PC community. The zombies mode not so much but you can find servers or host your own that people will join. You may have to configure your network/firewall settings to connect properly. Zombies mode on the PC allows you to download a vast amount of user created maps, some of which are of professional quality. A very fun mode to play for hours on end. You only need a half decent PC to play this game smoothly - it is no where near as demanding on processor/graphics as modern games, and still looks great!

A tough act to follow but still tons of fun....

CoD 4 revolutionized FPS's for good, with its realistic graphics, tight gameplay and most importantly, the multiplayer, being simply amazing, that it changed the popularity of war games from the WWII storylines to that of modern and future warfare. Even Medal of Honor and Battlefield, mainstays of the WWII FPS, switched over to a modernized setting after the success of Modern Warfare to varied results (Battlefield, successful, MoH not so much...). Being the last (Currently at least) game in the series to use such a setting, does it do so with flying colors or does it sink with the Missouri during Pearl Harbor?Taking place in the Pacific theatre and Eastern front of WWII, the story follows a US POW freed from captivity to help push the Japanese out of Peleliu and ... MoreCoD 4 revolutionized FPS's for good, with its realistic graphics, tight gameplay and most importantly, the multiplayer, being simply amazing, that it changed the popularity of war games from the WWII storylines to that of modern and future warfare. Sure it fails to surpass, or even match up the previous title in the series, but WoW still impresses me every time.Graphically, it looks great, especially with the flames, sound is top notch, the controls are tight, and is an all around joy to play. Multiplayer, on the other hand, is one area this game improves upon the previous game. The previous modes appear here, with Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and other standard modes are here, but it also has full game Co-op for the first time ever in a CoD game, but it has an ace up its sleeves: Zombies.Seemingly included as a fun throwaway addition, this mode is the main reason to buy this game. Addicting to the point of buying every map just to have more levels and variety, this mode is challenging, creative, actually makes players use teamwork and is just plain ol' fun. Playing solo or as a team to see who can last the longest amount of rounds, seeing who has the highest kill count and just surviving make this mode probably one of the greatest multiplayer additions of all time. All in all, not as good as Modern Warfare, but with solid gameplay, a change of pace from the usual European settings of WWII and terrific multiplayer, makes this game a must own!

Peril and danger lurk throughout the battlefield as players combat the unknown risk of the new chaos of battle. New infantry and vehicle-based weapons, like the potent flamethrower, bring the battlefield ablaze. Final Battles: Call of Duty: World at War forces players to survive the final climactic days of a world at war to thwart the advance of Axis powers on multiple fronts from Europe to the Pacific - delivering the hallmark Call of Duty cinematic intensity on a worldwide scale. Play as a U.S. Marine or Russian conscript across a variety of European and Pacific infantry, vehicle and airborne missions. Co-Op Campaign Mode: "No One Fights Alone" takes on new meaning as players can complete the entire single-player campaign with up to four players online or two players via split-screen (both online and offline). Strategising with others provides gameplay diversity, replayability and engagement. Addictive Multiplayer: Call of Duty: World at War continues the addictive and leading class-based multiplayer action. The addition of vehicles to the highly-successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer that already includes persistent experience, player rankings, upgradeable weapons, squad-based gameplay, map scripting, customisable classes and perks, brings a new dimension to Call of Duty online warfare. Unprecedented WWII Cinematic Quality: Utilising the jaw-dropping and revolutionary Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine, Call of Duty: World at War delivers an unprecedented level of visual and cinematic effects to WWII. Highly-detailed character models, self-shadowing, environmental lighting and amazing special effects up the WWII authenticity to new heights. Everyone knows the game is good, so long as multiplayer works(STEAM). Bought DVD,cost less, no problem.
13 March 2020

Honestly, I am psyched that the activation key is valid and I can play on a local multiplayer server. I have heard of so many issues with the STEAM version, I took a chance and paid less than $10 with shipping and I could not be more satisfied. I believe steam charges $25-$30 and then it doesn't work for a bunch of players. I am so glad that I took the chance and bought the hard copy DVD. It was not new, but the activation worked perfectly and the disc was in great condition. I play multiplayer and there are not a lot of matches. I'm surprised the servers are still online after like 10 or more years. I have a blast locally with my bro on LAN. Brings back memories of playing it on the Wii. Them Dogs are still scary, must've been traumatized by them when I was a wee one.

Excellent Classic CoD!
24 May 2021

This game is a must have for call of duty fans! Play the riveting campaign packed full of action and surprise, or come experience the very beginning of the zombies franchise. Multiplayer feels great and has a fun combat system. Id highly recommend this game to anyone looking to experience the classics. I always wanted to play the original zombies and Im very happy with the way the whole game feels. The campaign is especially great and feels good to control. Each episode starts with these awesome graphics that feel timeless and unique. Zombies is absolutely worth getting the dlc for as well. I played only a minor amount of the multiplayer but thought it was great too. Overall Id give this game a 10/10, and it still holds up in 2021 (year of this review)

I ordered World at War and the 3 modern warfare games. The day after placing my order I received an email saying world at war was unfortunately backordered. Well the day following that I got another email saying world at war had shipped and it actually arrived before my other three games! The game is in fantastic condition and I played it today! Would definitely purchase from DKoldies again!

Old school COD
2 December 2022

I am a person who is terrible at multi-player games, so going back to the glory days of nothing but campaign is just awesome. I have an up converter to get the ps2 to HD and am loving the old school play style. The one and only problem with old COD games is how long the tutorials are lol.

Still the best WWII COD game.
17 February 2021

This game came out when COD was still good. Before the. Just started pumping out clone games with different models every year. The story is gritty and brutal and the combat, especially against the Japanese, is brutal and unpredictable. Also, this game is were Nazi Zombies came from and the online play was awesome. For how cheap it is to buy mint copies of this game, you might as well just do it.
