Great Bottle That Really Keeps Its Cool!

I recently bought this one direct from Camelbak, and also the same version in the 22oz size. Both are great!Camelbak engraved them with my initials (in large group rides generic things can "walk"). The work was beautiful, on a shiny black finish to match my other bike components.I was curious about Camelbak's insulation claims, so I put chilled water, and 1 ice cube, in this 18oz bottle. Over 14 hours later at 76℉ room temp I measured the water temp at 46℉/7.8℃. That's as good as my "real" stainless steel thermos bottle. And way better than any plastic insulated bike bottles I have. Claim verified.Given that in a day's riding I'm gonna be refilling the bottle anyway, this more than meets my needs. and doesn't get sweaty & slippery, either. Great bottle, but needs the mud cap

The new Podium Steel works as advertised, keeping my water cool to drink. Especially if you add ice cubes. One problem I quickly discovered is that the standard cap nozzle will get filthy dirty with mud and debris while mountain biking. This makes it useless to drink from. If you try to open the valve to let the water flow out, the dirt now enters the bottle contaminating the water. It's definitely difficult to clean out if you're not properly equipped. This product should have the optional mud cap as a standard item with purchase. Even in road biking usage there's likelihood of road debris or bugs getting into the exposed cap area. This product would get 5 stars if it already included the mud cap. Otherwise, it's a great product.

Really Does Keep Cold Well

Extremely pleased with my latest Camelbak bottle. The stainless steel itself is tasteless, and doesn't retain any flavors from its contents. And its vacuum construction really does insulate well for a bike bottle, better than insulated plastic bottles I’ve had.I had mine laser etched by Camelbak, the work very nicely done. The laser removes the paint to reveal a silver stainless steel surface underneath. But as Camelbak states, this bottle: "Wears In, Not Out" and will acquire paint scratches due to bottle cage contact. I use non-metallic cages, and haven't noticed any significant scratching on its black paint.Because the bottle is inflexible steel, unlike pliable plastic bottles, the cap needs an internal venting tube to equalize pressure for liquid flow. I mistook it for a drinking straw, and thought the wrong length had been installed. DUH! Email with Camelbak politely explained my error, and of course the bottle works fine.This bottle doesn’t leak, unlike cheaper brands, or promotional giveaways. It has an automatic valve system with an ideal high flow rate, and a manual lockout, that are very effective. I hate bottles that drip all over my bike, on the floor when indoors, or when carried in a bag or by hand.I like it enough that I bought another, in the larger 22oz/650ml size. I recommend this product.

I was excited to try a new Camelbak bottle. Every Camelbak product that I have has been fabulous. The steel water bottle - not so much. The BEST thing about it is that it does keep liquid cold. I filled it with cold water (no ice) and left it in my car for over a day - the water was still cool after sitting in a car on a sunny day. Things I did not like - I forgot to turn the top button to off so the entire bottle emptied in my car; if you do not screw the cap on very tightly, the cap leaks; I am not keen on putting a steel bottle in my bike water bottle cages so would never use this for biking. I like the sturdiness. The water does pour nicely into your mouth. when you tip the bottle upside down. I would imagine it will keep hot drinks warm as well.The bottle fits very well in the cage, I had someone say “well its metal it may rattle”, I was unable to make that happen when hopping or riding over rougher terrain. Once I got the hang of it, it was easy to get into or out of the frame.If you look at the size of my frame on this 26 inch bike, you will note the fit is a little close but it works well. At first I thought it would be problematic and I should have gotten a smaller 14 oz bottle, but I quickly got used to it.Now on to the way you open this. I was concerned I could not open it with one hand, or my mouth after removing it from the cage, as I did the older style water bottles with the pull up valve. After a few minutes, bingo why am I trying to open it that way? Open and close it it while in the cage, and voila easy.Overall, an excellent water bottle especially with the insulation and I will now move the older plastic one to a backup role.

To start off, this bottle is pretty sweet. It feels solid, built well but not overly heavy. I really like the drinking system on it. It has a flow selector on top which is easy to use, you can turn it on or off but while riding you will need two hands to do it. I normally keep it on for my ride and will turn it off if I toss it in a bag. The flow out of the mouth piece is great. Water gets through with no problem and you don't have to suck on it like normal bike bottles.Being that it is metal, it is a fair bit heavier than the normal plastic biking bottles but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make to use less plastic in my life. If you're one that tracks grams/ounces then this isn't the bottle for you.Besides the weight, there are a couple downsides that ... MoreTo start off, this bottle is pretty sweet. The first is completely avoidable and/or easily managed but still a consideration. If you love the paint on your bike frame around your bottle cages then you should put a protective film around them. This metal bottle will incidentally tap your frame and chip the paint. It's not a deal breaker, just something to keep in mind.The second issue is that the location for the bottle retention piece on all standard bottle cages does not fit this bottle. Camelbak placed the indent too high as illustrated in the attached picture with another no name but standard bottle. I tested this bottle on rides on pavement only and while it stayed in the cage, I honestly don't know how it would do if you were riding gravel. I doubt this would work on a mountain bike as it would probably bounce out on the first bump. All in all, I really do like this bottle, the positives of less plastic and solid construction allow me to see past the cons.

This bottle is a great size for day use and short hikes and rides. The insulating features work great. I was curious about using it during freezing temperatures to keep my water flowing and it did better then expected. I took it on a few hour hike in below-freezing temps and kept it on the outside pocket of my pack. I was able to drink without any ice formation in the spout. While the steel outside was pretty cold, the water inside stayed at a consistent temp. I will note that the packaging says to avoid freezing the bottle, but in my experience for a few hours it performed well and the cold did not affect any of the plastic or silicone parts.As far using this as a bike bottle, I have mixed feelings. If you tip it upside down it will flow out freely when the valve is open. The difficult part is opening and closing the valve with one hand while riding. The valve lock on the lid is not easy to get all the way to the open or locked position with only one hand so I have usually ended up leaving the valve left open. This hasn't been a problem so far and there hasn't been an issue with spilling but the point of having an insulated water bottle is to keep the hot air out of the bottle. Other than the difficulty with the lock/unlock feature it has been effective. I think that due to the inability to close the valve and the additional weight of the steel, I will probably only use it on bike rides when it is either below freezing or exceptionally hot.

This is such a nice water bottle! When I first received it, I was so impressed with how lightweight and fast flowing this bottle was. Being able to hold this, it feels lighter than my other plastic cycling water bottles even with water in it. This is nice because it holds a lot of water and cold water too, where I can put ice in it for a long period of time and still have cold water on my rides. The other nice part of this bottle is when the valve is open 100%, the water gushes. Free flow, no issue trying to suck all the water out of the bottle. However, this could suck if you leave it open all the way because the water will spill everywhere. The one thing that I am bummed out about is that it does not fit my full suspension mountain bikes. I’ve used my Camelbak Podium VVS 22oz stainless on a number of rides so far and I’m not diggin it. This is based on mountain biking... not road, which may spur a different review, but it probably wouldn't be much different. Below are some pros and cons:Pros:- It's durable. I intentionally tossed it onto concrete a couple times from about five feet (on the lid and on the metal part). The plastic didn't crack and the stainless steel bottle didn't dent. Just some scuffs in the paint.- It didn't leak at all when placed upside down for an hour (post dropping), and the rubber/plastic lid was in the locked position.- Water tastes fine after sitting over a day.- It kept water colder longer than a plastic water bottle.- Ice cubes easily fit into the bottle.Cons:- It’s heavy compared to plastic water bottles (12oz / 354g).- Because of its weight, it will definitely get tossed out of your bottle cage during big hits or in fast technical sections.- When you get the brief opportunity to chug water during a more mellow section of singletrack (unless you stop), you can't squeeze the bottle to get that quick swig. You have to suck on the mouthpiece or sit there and let it drain into your mouth.- The mouth piece is of large diameter, which is good for flow, but the hole is almost 1.5 cm wide and is 1.5 inches deep, so lots of mud and trail crud packs into it. Since you can't squeeze the bottle, you can't flip it over and blast the crud out. This is also the case for creek crossings where creek water fills the opening and sits until you gulp it down... (think E.coli, giardia, or in the case of this spout, an entire gambusia would fit comfortably ;).Other Observations:- Can’t put hot liquids in it (not something I'd do, but others might).- It fits fine in a King bottle cage, which is a standard size.Overall, I think this bottle is a terrible idea for mountain biking, maybe 2.5 stars for road cycling. I definitely wouldn't recommend it. I think it’d be perfect for a parent pushing a stroller with a bottle holder, someone biking on a dry paved rail-trail/bike-path, commuting to work (which I'm now using it for), or just use in one's car.
