Everything you might want in a sear box

This guy is a solid workhorse. Either it gets very dirty, very easily, or I'm just using it constantly. Probably both tbh! I love finishing smoked meats on this thing, including tri-tip, steaks, pork tenderloin, etc. The cast iron grates are a huge plus for those classic sear marks, while the heat distribution from the Sidekick burner allows for even searing with minimal to no flare-ups. Only downside is it appears the Sidekick burner might be too powerful for this searbox. I try to keep it below medium, otherwise, the temperature gauge goes well past 750, and the bottom of the searbox turns from black to red #funtimes

Good product, some bad manufacturing.

Grill has great design. I have it's big brother and have used it extensively It cooks fish, steaks, burgers to perfection. I purchased this grill to sit on the open end of my 3 burner 16 inch camp chef system. It fits fine with the handle not installed and all I have to do is rig a replacement handle. They have wonderful, friendly support people, but Camp Chef has not stood behind their product once in the 3 or 4 support calls I have had. Camp chef provides no touchup paint. My other Camp chef products have had a few missing paint issues with same response. The current stove has a design/production problem with the latch. It does not shut correctly for 2 reasons. 1. The bend on the latch is done wrong and enough power is required to close the latch that it deforms the stove and closes off center. 2. The rivets on the latch are too long and must be pushed away from the latch or it will not close. They must be done every time one closes the latch. My latch on the big brother works perfectly and eyeball tells me it would fit. Camp Chef response was to say they would send me email which I was to respond to with pictures and send to them. They never sent the e-mail. I think I will just buy another latch for the big brother grill and avoid the hassle.

Grease Fire

Description says, “instantly vaporizes grease drippings”. Think how that actually works… I think this grilled is a flawed design. The actual grill and hot plate are so close together compared to a regular gas grill. So when you cook anything with a fat content and it drips down it immediately becomes a grease fire. Not a big deal on normal grill, but since there really is no space the flames engulf your food. Also, doesn’t help to close the lid to put out grease fire because too much airflow. If you keep to chicken breast and vegetables works great.

Great While it Lasted
26 July 2021

I grew up in a family that uses Camp Chef - on the mountains and for backyard grilling. I knew and trusted the product, so when we moved away and needed a grill of our own, I didn't look anywhere else. Ordered the Tailgater Combo, and have had it in the yard since (living in South Carolina, we can grill 9-10 mos out of the year). I went out this spring, and the grillbox literally fell apart in my hands. Rusted all the way through in under 3 years. The base is also rusting away. My family (in Utah) has never had a problem like this. Would love for Camp Chef to create a version that holds up in humid climates, especially because we can grill more often.

No quality control
5 August 2022

Bought the camp chef stove and grill box from Costco. First grill box was unboxed and covered in some kind of oil and covered in scratched. Ordered a second grill box and upon opening the box, the unit was filled with black rust and totally covered in scratches. Looks like they keep sending out garbage in the hopes someone will take it. Returning everything, even though we like the camp stove.

Outstanding addition to our 14inch two burner
28 March 2023

Have used for years paired with single griddle plate. It is unlimited what you can cook on it for two people. Steak, Hash brown patties, hamburgers, biscuits for biscuits and gravy, chicken, and pretty much anything that you cook on a regular grill. It is just a little smaller.

Perfect For Camping or Travel
28 May 2021

I travel for a lot with my job. Whether traveling in my camper or car. If I stay at a hotel I cook in the parking lot kind of like tailgating. I use this BBQ Grill Box almost daily on my 2 burner stove. I have cooked salmon on wood planks, grilled burgers, steak, pork chops, chicken, stuffed mushrooms, stuffed peppers. It works great. Perfect size for 2 people. Can cook enough burgers, steaks, or chicken for 4 people though.

So easy to transport
9 August 2022

How do you make a transportable barbecue? Just ask the Camp Chef crew, they thought of everything. I own the 14 inch barbecue box . It’s easy to move, just carry it in one piece with large sturdy handle, and locking lid. The infrared system keeps it clean after use, so you don’t get to your vehicle dirty. The whole thing (stove and barbecue box) fits in the trunk of my car . I give it 100 stars!

Takes a While to Make it Work
22 March 2023

I bought the Pro14 2 burner cooker along with the deluxe bbq box, griddle and wind screen. I tried multiple times to use the grill box like a regular gas grill - no go. There is nothing in the bottom so anything you cook will flare very nicely - it does not vaporize and it cooks on the bottom very nicely requiring cleanup.I tried covering the bottom in tin foil - don't, it causes a huge problem. I have now found what works for me; soaked wood chips sealed in foil (perforated) that fit right in the unvented section of the bottom of the grill. Cuts down on the flareups 75% and gives great smoke flavor. I went from hating it to really liking it.Due to the unique way this box tries to cook, and my inability to get it to work like normal grills I contacted Camp Chef ... MoreI bought the Pro14 2 burner cooker along with the deluxe bbq box, griddle and wind screen. I have other Camp Chef equipment including pellet smoker and have been pleased.

Unfortunate design flaw/reality
19 July 2021

So I bought this to go with the versatop camping grill and the reason I bought that was super easy, no mess cooking. That grill is perfect because the hot plate has the fat collection at the front of the plate that just routes down into the collection cup. I bought the grill box to go with it but the problem is there is no system to deal with fat drippings - they would basically drip down into the main grill unit that you may (like me) want to keep relatively clean. So there is a built in tray they claim collects the fat and "burns off" during cooking but of course to let fat through it needs holes in it. I read a bunch of other reviews that said that if you grill low fat food it's fine but burgers/steaks etc the fat run-off just pools on that tray and catches fire ... MoreSo I bought this to go with the versatop camping grill and the reason I bought that was super easy, no mess cooking. The solution would have been relatively easy to design in - it just needs built in tray to funnel fat down into a front collection that goes into the dripping cup like their plate has. Honestly if that was the case this would be perfect but my guess is that to save $$$ they thought this would do. Long story short - if you don't mind grease and fat all over your stuff (ie. your setup is more permanent) and you are okay dealing with the odd grease flame-up - this is fine. If not you might just have to live with the hot plate which actually is quite fine when it comes to cooking almost anything. Cheers
