Let me qualify myself as a triathlete of over 25 years with over 50 races and thousands of bike miles. Initially bike was over shifting and the rear derailleur came off on a pavement ride climbing within 1st month . Also brakes had excessive noise. Brought it back to have REI rebuild it.Rode it for 1 year on light gravel and pavement. No single tracks. Both rims excessively were out of true, brakes/rotors prematurely went bad from maybe one ride in rain? Bottom bracket is worn out. How can cannondale design this junk?

I first saw this bike when I was looking at my first bike but decided to get the Cannondale Quick CX 4 to see if I enjoyed cycling in the first place. 2 weeks later I returned that bike and placed an order on this instead.The first thing I noticed is the comparative agility and quickness coming from a plusher hybrid fitness bike in the Quick CX 4 to this “entry-level” gravel bike. Super excited to add hundreds of more miles along with potential upgrades that are available for this platform.P.S.: For pedals since they aren’t included, I bought a set of Bontrager hybrid flat/SPD pedals from a local bike shop to hold me over while I consider stepping into the “clip less” cycling shoe game.

Been using this bike 80 miles a week commuting for 2 years. Had to replace the derailleur, front and back brake calipers, chain, rear cassette and freehub 3 times! Shocking quality. But when its out of the bike shop it is fun. Tyres ok, but swapped for puncture proof. Unfortunately put me off cannondale for life. I bought at 1200 but if you can get it for under 5 then go for it.
I love this bike. I have over 800 miles on mine now and it is holding up. I've run it full speed down rough mountain roads loaded with gear without problems. I've upgraded the seat and went to wider tires, 44mm Raddlers. I'll eventually upgrade the bottom bracket and crankset, but for the $ this is an excellent bike, especially for an entry level gravel/touring bike.

They called the next day to say it was all set, so I drove back two hours to pick it up. Honestly, this is 5+ stars for service, but... I just finished a 50 mile test ride (almost entirely on a paved rail trail, not gravel), and everything was great* EXCEPT there was an increasingly horrible grinding sound when I used the rear brake. I checked it out at home, and the caliper is once again clearly misaligned to the point it bends the disc when closed. So now back to REI for a third maintenance attempt to fix it. If it can't be reliably fixed, I'm likely to return it. Although I'd consider another Topstone model that is aligned and perhaps with better brakes.* Other than the rear brake, the only thing worth mentioning is there is a fairly loud 'clunk' when it drops down a gear. At first I found this disconcerting, but I am starting to like it because it shifts cleanly and the clunk is positive feedback of the gear change.
This is my first "proper" bike and I am really enjoying it so far. It looks good all in black and rides nicely. I haven't taken it off road yet but seems sturdy. The brakes make a little noise (could be because they are new) and could be a bit more sensitive. Inside the main frame is a little small, ie I can't easily fit my bike lock and water bottle, however there are plenty of mounting points so I just need to do some adjusting. Apart from those points, great bike.

The well-meaning shop (I truly think REI is the sleeper best bike shop in many towns, I know this is controversial) assured me that mechanical disc brakes often have a burn in period. I cleaned them constantly, I tried all kinds of dedicated burn-in ride routines, even seeking out long down grades. Ultimately, I think, the cheaply executed single-moving-caliper mechanical design (one caliper fixed, one caliper moves) is untenable. It cannot stop the bike without warping the disc (the moving caliper bends the disc up against the fixed caliper), and indeed, we're 4/4 on disc warp. When we roll up to a stop together it sounds like the endtimes. Bystanders get spooked by the supernatural shrieks and howls, sometimes even snaps, bangs and clunks, and then also sometimes those bystanders get hit because whether or not these bikes will stop at all on any given attempt is a crapshoot. I would posit, after ~1000 miles on these, that single caliper mechical disc brakes simply cannot work.Anyway, returning them next week.We had wanted 1x drive trains, and it's irritating that Cannondale only does a 1x on the cheapest possible bike with the worst possible components- there's no reason it has to be this way.I'd been a pretty loyal Cannondale customer prior to this, but it's been a long time since I've felt this ripped off by a brand, and certainly won't be after. I get the sourcing components was hard for a while there, but this never should have made it out the door.
This ticked the boxes I was looking for when shopping for a bike. I wanted something light, but a carbon frame was out of the budget and I've found the aluminum frame on this to be very easy to load on my roof rack. It's done just fine on the stock tires in gravel and on pavement. On pavement because of the fork geometry it can sometimes feel like the front end wants to turn sharper than you'd think. Coming from hydraulic brakes on my mountain bike, there was a bit of a learning curve with the brakes on this, but I have found the mechanical discs to give me the stopping power I need. I am partial to 1x's so I enjoy the simplicity of the drivetrain on the Topstone 4, and I've not yet ran into issues with not having the right gear to be in.
I really enjoy riding this bike and I really enjoy how it looks on the trail. However I’ve had a critical problem with the wheels. I popped 6 spokes in 1 year, 3 on each wheel. Eventually I gave up and a bike tech in Colorado convinced me to upgrade to a 32 spike tubeless setup with a higher quality manufacture. Really frustrating to be in the shop every other month getting spokes fixed. Looking forward to adding more upgrades.*** I did not buy this bike from REI
