Canon EF 35mm f/2 Is USM Lens

$856.00

(489 reviews)

The EF 35mm f/2 IS USM wide-angle lens features an optical design of 10 lens elements in 8 groups. With the incorporation of a high-precision Glass-Molded (GMo) Aspherical lens element, it guarantees high image quality across the whole frame through effective correction of various aberrations, including curvature of field. In addition, it features 8-blade circular aperture capable of producing beautiful out-of-focus images. Optimized lens coatings for digital cameras are applied to ensure excellent color balance and minimize ghosting and flare. The lens is incorporated with a compact optical Image Stabilizer (IS) to provide effective shake compensation up to 4-stop shutter speed for sharp image and clarity. In addition, Canon’s advanced IS technology can distinguish between normal shooting and panning and switch to the optimal IS mode automatically, helping users capture movement with greater accuracy. Coupled with the lens’ f/2 large aperture that allows photographers to explore shallow depth of field or to shoot handheld in low-light conditions with a faster shutter speed, the lens is ideal for capturing fast-moving subjects and turning motions into stunningly sharp images. The lens include a ring-type USM (Ultrasonic Motor), in line with their compact designs, and additional features such as high speed CPU and optimized auto-focusing (AF) algorithm for silent and high speed AF performance. For enhanced operational flexibility, full-time manual focusing is supported to ensure adjustments can be made even when AF is engaged. The EF 35mm f/2 IS USM offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.20m, allowing photographers to get even closer to smaller or more detailed subjects for more imaging possibilities. It features a compact design, making it perfect for outdoor shooting with excellent mobility.

Shooting at this focal length allows for more in focus area. Thus, shooting a group of people at f/2 is easily done. The bokeh isn't super blurry like shooting with the Canon EF 135mm. I am very happy with the stabilization and color rendering of this lens. It's just a great lens. You just need to buy it.

After testing the lens for couple of weeks on my Canon 5D MkIV camera, all I can say that it's definitely a keeper. Wide open (f/2) it's decently sharp. Not even close to sharpness levels of f/1.4L MkII version at f/1.4, but still more than good enough. Sharpness (beyond f/2.8) is as good as it gets, files are extremely detailed, contrasty and colorful. Bokeh is super creamy and simply beautiful at f/2, and minimum focus distance creates some amazing out of focus areas. IS is silent and very efficient, making this lens a real gem in Canon's collection!

Then again, when shooting important stuff one should really be using a follow focus and external mic(s) anyway. But sometimes you can't do that easily or conveniently, so...you get the point. The ugly: one thing. And it's more a camera problem that most of us experience. ... MoreI rented this one the other day. That rolling shutter artifact that makes us miss our old CCDs even at lower resolution. This lens seems to make rolling shutter worse in motion. Badly.Bottom line: for video/digi-film on a tripod or even handheld it should work great even with [careful] motion. But be warned that it isn't great for runnin'-and-gunnin'.

Good, unique in EF lineup

I got this to use for shoulder-mounted video with a 5D IV. It gives you a fairly specific look, which I was going for, but which may not be appropriate for all situations. There isn't another Canon lens, however, that gives you a normal/wide field of view, wide aperture, *and* IS. The 24-105 f/4 IS is popular for video for similar reasons, but at least for me, the f/2 of the 35 is more useful than the advantages the zoom gives you. I most often shoot at 2.8 or wider for video for the narrow depth of field (I also use a 50 1.4 or 1.2, and an 85 1.8), so the 35 f/2 is ideal for a moderate wide angle (I'm generally not so interested in the telephoto look - I do use the 85mm but prefer the field of view and other factors of the wider 50 and 35mm). The 35mm f/2 also has a big advantage in its size and weight over a zoom (or the 35 1.4 for that matter). All that said, the 35mm (on a full-frame sensor) gives you sort of an old-school verit, documentary look. That may sound great, but I found it has relatively limited uses (depending on your project, of course). For a recent wedding video, I used the 35 maybe 25% of the time, with the rest split between the 50 and 85 (and a second camera with a 70-200 for the ceremony). Most shots done with the 35 would have been fine (if not better, for this purpose anyway) with the 50 - but the IS is crucial for many kinds of shots when shoulder-mounted or hand-held, and sometimes of course you do need to go wider than 50. For video projects other than weddings I intend to use this a lot - it gives that aforementioned old-school look which, used creatively, can be made to look fresh and modern - an antidote to the now-bland professional video look that everyone and their uncle can do with their relatively inexpensive cameras with minimal effort. Studying Leica street photography, where 35mm is a very common focal length, and e.g. French New Wave movies where this look was employed is useful in figuring out how to use this focal length.

Great lens
26 July 2022

I've had this lens for a few years but didn't use it much at first as I only really bought it to shoot some events for friends and then moved and misplaced lens. I have to say I am very impressed after having found it a few weeks ago just before going on vacation. I've always loved the 50mm as I find it to be very flattering but I am beginning to fall for the 35 focal length. I'm sure the more expensive lens would be better for low light and for overall image quality but this lens should suffice for most situations. I like it so much and have been watching so many youtube videos on the 1.4 that I am curious on that lens also. I have several portraits that look quite good but can't upload for privacy. The main thing I notice is you can get a very nice background ... MoreI've had this lens for a few years but didn't use it much at first as I only really bought it to shoot some events for friends and then moved and misplaced lens. This would work great for street photographers. Something about the 35 and probably 24 that often makes the images so much more interesting that the longer lenses.

Happy clients, happy photographer
27 July 2022

I have a photography business, and I needed a couple of additional lenses for a wedding I booked. I rented the 35mm f/2! My clients are so happy with the photos they’ve seen so far! A happy client = a happy photographer!I will absolutely be using lensrentals again in the near future! The process of ordering, receiving, using and shipping back the equipment was so simple. They even provided the box and packing tape! The equipment was delivered in a had carry case with smaller cases inside. The lenses were very clearly packed with care!

This lens is what I would describe as very nearly L glass without the high cost of L glass.Sharpness is really good for non-L glass. Way better than the nifty fifty that every n00b raves about. This lens is rather sharp wide open at f/2 and is sharp around f/2.8 and f/4. Diffraction softening starts to kick in around f/5.6, though it doesn't get poor until f/11.If you're rocking an EOS Rebel and are looking to buy your first EF- mount lens that maybe you can take to full-frame... this is that lens.It works very well on Canon APS-C crop-frame cameras. 35mm focal length works out to a 55mm equivalent. There's no way I could do that with any of that super expensive Canon or Sigma 35mm f/1.4 non-IS glass. When you upgrade to full frame, well, now you have a really nice EF mount lens for your wide-angle/landscape photography.

What a Sweet Little Lens
17 November 2022

I am so glad I decided to order this lens. I did not want to let this model go away without getting one. It is fast, quiet, and accurate. I am used to having sharp non-Ls like the 85 1.8 and the 50 1.4. This 35 f2 does not disappoint. My 85 is razor sharp. This 35 rivals it. The IS will be a welcome feature, too. I recently got a 5D mkIV. The 35 makes for an awesome photography combo.

Works well on my Canon 70d
13 February 2015

Been shooting with video cameras for many years professionally and for fun. I'm semi retired now recently took an interest in DSLR's purchase a Canon 70d about 8 mo. ago. I just now felt ready to move on from the kit lens. When I first saw the EF 35mm quite some time ago I dismissed it as being to expensive, almost a grand. It's still rather overpriced especially with no lens hood included. That being said thought I would give it a try and now have decided to keep it.Pros Very nicely balanced on the 70d only weighs 11oz. easy to shoot and carry around.Descent build quality not L quality but still good. It's a good focal length for my needs on the 70d it's around 55mm Fairly fast at f/2 sharp wide open, tact sharp across the frame at f 2.8 Full Time Manual focus ring ... MoreBeen shooting with video cameras for many years professionally and for fun. It's a good focal length for my needs on the 70d it's around 55mm Fairly fast at f/2 sharp wide open, tact sharp across the frame at f 2.8 Full Time Manual focus ring is smooth and well damped easy to use.The IS makes a difference with hand held videos, nice feature, very quiet.AF works very quickly in fairly low light (one small lamp in room) Takes beautiful still portraits and close ups very pleasing colors, contrast, detail. When needed it works exceptionally well with my Speedlite 580exII.No distortion or serious vignette problems mounted on the 70d on FF camera there is some but the EF 35mm lens profiles correct these issues in camera while shooting.Minor Cons -Being a video shooter I was a little disappoint in the focus motor noise it is noticeable and will be recorded on your sound track when using the onboard camera mics. However I often use external mics or recorders anyway. Also I enjoy overriding the AF manually pulling focus to get artistic effects and this lens fits my needs. In most situations though the focus motor noise goes unnoticed by the folks around you when shooting stills or videos. AF will hunt and have trouble locking on in candlelight (a few candles) or in very poor light. I generally switch to manual focus and live view at that point anyway. Conclusion -I thought about purchasing the Sigma 35mm f1.4 its and excellent fast lens but very heavy over twice the weight of the Canon. The thought of carrying it around all night made my arms ache. No IS feature and cost over $ more. Did not feel the $ for a little fast sharper lens was worth it in my case. Additionally several reviewers complained about inconsistent AF issues when used with their 70d's even under good lighting conditions. The 70d is a good camera it's not full frame of course but with this EF 35mm f/2 IS USM lens and fairly good light it comes close to producing comparable images. Sometimes it's very hard for my friends with FF cameras to tell the images apart. The AF gets a fast solid lock though the viewfinder or with live view in fairly low light. This lens has definitely brought out the best in my 70d and I recommend it for anyone looking for a sharp, fairly fast prime lens with general use focal length.

it's a 3 - That's Great

First off, 3mm is a great focal length and the lens takes a lot of its character from that. The f/2.0 aperture, the small size of the lens and the medium size of the price tag all combine to make this a great value. how does it compare to other choices? Don't know, don't care. This is a good one. I got mine about 12 years ago and have about 4,700 images saved. so, it does not get a lot of use, just a nice steady pace of really god images. That makes sense for a value-priced lens that still has good quality. The focus motor make a buzzing noise and is slower than USM lens designs but that does not matter for me. It might matter if you need to be quiet and/or fast. Shooting portraits with it? Get the subject a good bit of distance away from the lens. It will look ... MoreFirst off, 3mm is a great focal length and the lens takes a lot of its character from that. It will look good, especially for environmental or natural light portraits indoors.
