The near circular aperture diaphragm produces softer focusing for a more uniform result. Subjects will be more prominent and stand out against the gorgeously soft background blur. Focusing Its ring-type ultrasonic motor ensures a fast autofocus performance in near silence. This consummate performer has been designed with excellent holding torque that drives accurate point of focus without overshooting. You can stay in full creative control thanks to the full manual override that lets you adjust the focus without leaving AF. The Canon EF 50 mm lens has a Super Spectra coating for precise colour reproduction and enhanced contrast. This special coating also helps to reduce image flare and ghosting. Flash metering The EF optics is able to pass the distance information back to an attached EOS E-TTL II external flash system for optimal flashing. 50mm/1.2 vs 85mm/1.2 vs 24-70mm/2.8

Well, I should confess that I am not a professional (do not earn money) and had already had canon masterpieces 85mm 1.2 L II USM and 24-70mm 2.8 L II USM (among other lenses) prior to purchasing 50mm 1.2 L USM. Both worked great but over the years I noticed that I am in love in 85mm 1.2. It is a really great lens. It is sharp and bright - I would say simply second to none. 85mm works perfectly well in any light conditions and capable to provide absolutely astonishing portraits. Surely I used 85mm 1.2 for video as well – great colors! Usually I used my lenses together with Mark III to make pictures of my kids (5Y, 3Y, 1Y). However, It seemed that while portraits were really great, I did not that much enjoyed with other photography styles – e.g. full-height with both 85mm (it loses its bokeh at long distances, becomes too slow, and a bit clumsy for home use) while 24-70 did reasonably good but not the same as 85 could do. So, I bought 50mm 1.2After 3 months in use – I really love this lens. Highly recommend. If you are in deep thoughts among 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2 or 24-70mm 2.8 – you are surely just started your photography career. 24-70mm is great but more universal - so do not expect that it would outperform 85mm and 50mm. 85mm 1.2 – unbeatable for portraits especially outdoors in any light condition but might lose its grip in other cases. 50mm 1.2 probably not that great as 85mm for portraits, but gives you more flexibility with other styles. If your focus is on kids who smile a lot also move fast – buy 50mm (85 AF seems a bit slower, also it will be better for use indoors and to make full height photos) , if you considering pursuing professional career and to make a lot of great portraits – 85mm is your choice. If you are looking for workhorse to cover all possible needs in this range, even including architectural and landscape photography – take 24-70mm 2.8 to home with you tonight.

So let's find out in my opinion what justifies the high price tag of the Canon 50mm 1.2L? Well is L series weather sealed, razor sharp specially from F2.8 on 'till F8, yes that red ring, the incredible luminosity you won't get from any other lens, beautiful contrast, the pleasant colors, all these facts make this lens images spectacular, unique and hard to define . But let's be honest, you buy it to shoot at F1.2 and get excellent results at least 95% of the times right? well goes like this, first you have to micro adjust this beast with each of your cameras, yes you should and must! tweak it to the max ... MoreFirst off, this is not a lens for everyone, this is a lens for professional photographers who know what they are doing, for some it is a bit of a polarizing lens. Focusing speed is not the fastest, but then again this is a portrait not a sport lens. Bokeh? no other 50mm lens will give you the creamy soft blurred background the 1.2L will bring to the table, there is only one wide aperture F1.2 in the market and this is it, besides this lens is made from a company you can trust and give you peace of mind because you know you are buying quality.

Bought this from CeX as I lacked a standard lens for my EOS camera outfit. It is a big, bulky lens but is very well constructed, has decent autofocus and is weatherproof. Results are interesting. This lens is neither the sharpest, the most contrasty nor the most Chromatic Aberration free out there.. But there is something magical about the results that regular lab tests do not reveal. You will need to consider more recently designed for digital sensor alternatives such as tbe Sigma 50mm ART or the Tokina 50mm Opera . But if you want amazingly smooth, soft and accurate colours and incredibly flattering skin tones for what I term 'fine art' photography then it has absolutely no equal.Recommended for the purposes mentioned and perfectly good for others..

Just adore this lens. Every time I use it I am impressed. Super sharp, lightweight, and the f1.2 makes it brilliant for low light shooting. This lens comes with me everywhere. I use it in street, portraits, commercial product shoots and have even used it in landscapes. If I were to only have one lens, it would be this one.

The quality of this lens is sublime. It feels luxurious, is solidly made and weather sealed. The images it produces also ooze luxury. Lots of cinematic character making it ideal for video.Joe at the Carlisle shop was extremely helpful. He let me test out the lens, inspect it in detail and even pose for an interview style framing so I could see how the lens would look for my uses. Absolute star. The lens itself was in immaculate condition - which was a pleasant surprise when it had a grade B from Wilkinson. It goes to show that their grading system is BRUTAL. So rest assured, if it's got an A or B grade, it's going to be in excellent condition (unlike MPB where 'Excellent' is debatable!).Plus the 12 month warranty leaves me peace of mind buying used with ... MoreThe quality of this lens is sublime. This is a fantastic lens to use for achieving a very shallow depth of field and a dream like quality to images. It's very easy to photograph something which appears mundane and get an image which is visually very pleasing. Using wide open or close to, does mean that one has to take care in respect of what needs to be in focus to get a usable image.I already owned the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L prior to buying this lens so had a good insight in respect of just how shallow the depth of field is using the lens wide open. I need a 50mm for shooting in tight spaces where the 85mm would not be practical. The contrast, bokeh and how the images are rendered make this lens very addictive to use. It's a lens which will reward a photographer's efforts and deliver beautiful images, it's also a lens which can frustrate if expecting every image to be sharp in the right places, it does require a degree of care in how one approaches a subject if shooting wide open. One reward is great isolation of a subject from the background which just melts away.On paper there are other lenses of this focal length which some suggest are sharper, focus quicker and cost less. In actuality this lens has great potential to create beautiful, artistic images with qualities which are very difficult to put on a list of specifications. I would buy another without hesitation, were anything to happen to the one I currently own.And as always, great service from Wex.

Very special lens that can produce wonderfully artistic photos
15 November 2024

This is a very special 50mm lens. At f 1.2 it has a razor shallow depth of field which can be used to create incredible images. That said the f stop often needs to be selected to capture the depth needed to provide the proper split between what is or is not in focus. I’ve never had this lens miss focus but it’s possible to have too narrow a depth of field. This is really a lens that can produce extraordinary artistic images. Highly recommended.

Excellent rental service with super easy to understand and use shipping instructions - and the piece of tape was the magic touch !! The lens was packaged secure in a hard case and a padded lens case. With dense foam in between. No worries of damage unless ran over by a tank. Lens was sharp and worked as expected. Will do business again.

The MF ring is soft and has its safety system that if you go over the maximum range it continues to rotate so as not to damage the motor / system. Beyond all its quality in various aspects, the impressive photos it gives and everything else, the lens is aesthetically beautiful. For me it is the best 50mm lens on the market that only Canon can give you (and it is marked by the time it has been on the market since its launch and photographers continue to choose it over all others). At the moment there is no other like it, if you can make a great effort (like me) and get it for yourself, you will not regret it and it will be the best you have ever.
