A Deliberately Crippled Camera

I'm really not sure what Canon was thinking when they decided to unnecessarily neuter so many features of this camera. In the Nikon world, going from a D850/D810 to a D780/D750 really isn't much of a meaningful downgrade at all, but for Canon, they seem to treat the 6D series relative to the 5D series as if it's the red-headed stepchild or a camera they felt burdened to even release. Dual card slots? Nope, not getting them on the 6D Mark II even though the comparable Nikon bodies have them. Not only that, they couldn't even be bothered to at least make it a faster UHS-II slot, instead it is only rated for UHS-I speeds. Reasonable sync speed of 1/250s or 1/200s? Nope, you get 1/180s instead. Viewfinder? They don't even want you to see the whole picture you're taking, as it only has 98% coverage, which is really laughable that they would even do that with a full-frame camera body. As for video features, Canon's dual-pixel autofocus is great, but there is no included headphone jack to monitor your audio, whereas the Nikon bodies (D610/D750/D780) in this category have headphone jacks. There's just so many features omitted from this camera relative to the 5D series as well as its competitors that there's little reason to even recommend this camera for anything other than a backup to a 5D if you don't want to spend as much money. This is a camera that is literally worse than cameras that came before it. It's a 2017 model that struggles to compete with cameras released 3-4 years before it. If you're thinking about getting a 6D2, save your money, there's much better options elsewhere.

Great camera purchased when a general discount applied alongside a Canon cashback promotion. It has now returned to the price before the discount and cash back, but I would say it is still worth the money. I have been using Canon Digital DSLR cameras since the 10D so when the opportunity, to purchase a full frame 6DMK2 at what I considered a bargain price, it proved too good to miss. Coupled with the Canon 100-400 L series MK2 lens the quality of pictures is excellent. I am interested in aviation, railway and wildlife photography. Previously I have been using the APS-C Canon 7DMK2 which is a great camera but the pictures from the 6DMK2 are just fantastic. Even with high ISO the results are better than I was expecting.

Great Image Quality, Poor Face Tracking
4 March 2023

Ive rented this camera twice now and it's my dream camera in almost every way. I own the 90D and the sharpness of the Mark II blows the 90D out of the water. It performs decently in low light, which is my preferred genre, but the face tracking AI really struggles in low light and from angles where the entire face isn't in the shot. For example, if my model is looking over their shoulder and I'm trying to get a partial profile, the AI doesn't recognize that as a face. Usually I can override this by using the area selection in the view finder, and when I can't, the less focused photos still come out noticeably sharper than low light photos taken with my 90D. I've yet to figure out the dual pixel auto focus, but still my photos with multiple subjects have turned out ... MoreIve rented this camera twice now and it's my dream camera in almost every way. It is a pretty hefty camera, so probably not ideal for extended shoots like weddings or events, but for boudoir the weight hasn't been an issue. There is a small scratch on the LCD screen but it did not greatly impact using it in shoot. The ordering, shipping, and return process was seamlessly easy and the staff has always been kind and attentive in all my interactions with them. 10/10 would recommend using this service to any photographer who wants high quality images but doesn't have thousands of dollars to spend on quality gear.

Also, working with 4k in an editing system can be slow and frustrating. Even if you work in video you’re better off using a video camera, not a dslr. Though I understand the appeal due to coat needs the full sized sensor. Still, considering many things are winding up online, 1080 … good 1080 is beyond good enough. If you have the 6D, this is a great upgrade. If you want to move to a better camera with a full size sensor without breaking the bank, this is the perfect camera.

when i first got the camera .. how not to love it.. is your money time and effort you put forth, when you first buy you never feel regrets. that was my case.. some flaws i let them slide under the carpet and the feeling that it was my choice. but after this many years using it i have come to hate this camera, the missed focus photos ,, i mean the sheer number of photos for which the focus is always the back of my subject has come to an end for me since i cannot deal with this anymore. being a professional photographer i dont know why i sold my 5d Mark iii for this piece of junk.. yes the color science and the quality (when is in focus) is somehow superior to my 5d iii but after being a little more objective in my evaluation i recognize the noise is a big problem ... Morewhen i first got the camera .. how not to love it.. is your money time and effort you put forth, when you first buy you never feel regrets. that was my case.. some flaws i let them slide under the carpet and the feeling that it was my choice. but after this many years using it i have come to hate this camera, the missed focus photos ,, i mean the sheer number of photos for which the focus is always the back of my subject has come to an end for me since i cannot deal with this anymore. being a professional photographer i dont know why i sold my 5d Mark iii for this piece of junk.. yes the color science and the quality (when is in focus) is somehow superior to my 5d iii but after being a little more objective in my evaluation i recognize the noise is a big problem compared to 5d III,, and the focus or lack of focus is my main criteria for evaluating this camera so poorly. My all time favorite camera!
19 May 2022

I paired my 6D with a Sigma art 35mm and 85mm. After two years of owning this camera and using it almost every day for my photography business I feel like I need to leave a review to guide anyone looking for a reliable camera for their photography business. I specialized in Pet photography and also do a lot of family sessions and the live mode touch screen in addition to single point focus was ESSENTIAL for my pet photos! It was a total game changer! I was able to quickly and easily focus on the eyes with just tapping on the screen! I have tried upgrading to different cameras and ALWAYS come back to my 6D Mii. The colors are amazing and does everything I need it to! The one thing I wish was better it’s ability in low light. I am a natural light/outdoor photographer so I rarely needed it in low light situations, but when I did it didn’t really perform as well as I had hoped. It was definitely a lot better that my old Canon Rebel which was a crop sensor. If you are on the fence about buying this camera I highly recommend it! It is my all time favorite camera especially for the price! I call it Ole reliable because it never lets me down!

Smart Enough to Overcome My Limitations
11 June 2022

The camera body is excellent. It was all of the capability upgrade I was looking for from my old 50D. My one quibble isn’t totally Canon’s fault - due to availability issues from supply chain problems and pent-up COVID demand, I had almost no time to familiarize myself with the camera before a long trip. Most camera functions were very similar to my 50D, and many of the rest were intuitive. That said, not having a small physical manual to refer to, and having to research the online manual with poor to no internet access made figuring out a few important settings hard to manipulate. Still, it’s a testament to this camera’s technical capacities that I was able to capture the difficult shots with less than ideal settings.

Sports Photography AND Low Light Capabilities? You BET!
28 May 2022

I got mine as an upgrade/replacement for the workhorse 7D Mark ii I'd been using for sports photography for a couple years (and over 200k shutter actuations!). This is a HUGE upgrade, especially in low light conditions! It arrived in a Friday and, after a couple settings, put it to work the next day with NO issues. My keeper rate was over 90% so I HAD to choose the best of the best. The next week I was driving through New Mexico and stopped at a town that was once on US Route 66 and snagged a few shots of some of the abandoned house. Again, keeper rate was in the 90% range...100% in low light! (I prefer to shoot in natural light). The file size is big enough to allow for some cropping when using a zoom lens at longer focal range. Attached images were from a 30 minute excursion around and into some of the abandoned houses in one of the towns lost to Interstate 40 in New Mexico. All shot with natural light with minimal post adjustments to exposure, contrast and a Monochrome conversion.

basically a good rig.

After owning this rig for some time now I'm better prepared to give an honest factual review. I'm not a pro so take this for what's it's worth. This is a basic entry level full frame rig and is advertised as such. It takes great images as expected, is solidly built and reliable to a fault. It is however lacking is some areas, the first being the lack of a second card slot. Maybe I'm the only one who has ever forgotten to remove the card from the card reader and reinstall back into the camera. As such I've taken to carrying extra cards in my bag and in my vehicle. The lack of a pop up flash can be problematic at times. Who hasn't run into a situation where a little fill would be nice to have? It's main weakness is in my world is that it doesn't do well in action ... MoreAfter owning this rig for some time now I'm better prepared to give an honest factual review. As for an entry level full frame my Nikon D750, for about the same money, is a much better equipped camera. If you want to take portraits and landscapes, along with having a great walking around rig, then you'll be more than satisfied. If sports and birding are your thing the 7D II is probably a better choice.
