As is always the case with 1-series cameras the ergonomics are excellent. This morning I was very impressed with how quickly the camera locked onto animals in the distance. Once locked on it was very sticky.I tested the buffer when I first received the camera and was very impressed. At 20 fps full RAW it is basically limitedness and at 40 fps the buffer lasted about 10 seconds before a pause.Normally, I would give a five star review, but I feel that Canon could have boosted the resolution a bit to 28-32 MP to give photographers a bit more ability to crop. I definitely did not want a 45 MP, but 4-8 more would have been nice. Will be interesting to see what Canon does for Mk2 in 2028. Will they provide a boost to resolution or go the way of Sony with a global sensor?

Its usable pixel counts usually surpass those high-res bodies (like A1 or R5II) if you are shooting at low light or ISO, or both.Believe me or not, my 32000 ISO shots holds more details than some of those cameras's shots at <10000 ISO.Its AF system is abusolutely the best I have ever seen. I use a well-calibrated red dot sight on R1 for fast-moving animals and the only thing I needed to do was to point the red dot at the animal and press the shutter. Even withou tuning its AF behavioer, every shot is in-focus, this is amazing..

I am very happy with my new Canon R1. I shoot dance rehearsals where focusing can be a challenge. My out of focus rate has dropped from around 5% with my R3 to about 2% with the R1, a big improvement. Still, some of the out of focus shots are my fault and not the camera. Focus tracking is fabulous. Image quality with the R1 is simply superb. High ISO performance is really good. All the features are great. It is a wonderful camera.

I received my camera on December 5th and have been out with it daily photographing birds. Nobody wants to be accused of saying that a piece of equipment can make one a better photographer, but I'm close to saying this in regard to birds. Once it is set up (an evolving process, maybe never complete to perfection), it does as it says. The autofocus finds the perching birds that like to hide behind twigs, with occasional misses in the very extreme cases of intervening plant parts. Watch your drive settings. It can fire off a lot of frames before you know it! I like it so much that I'm selling some idle lenses and two other bodies to B & H to help finance the purchase of a second R1 for various reasons.
Received R1 from B&H on 11/29/24. Unboxed, setup Eye Control (VERY easy...even for me with progressive eyeglasses!), turned on Action Priority for basketball and back button focus.Headed out for first HS basketball game on 12/4.Immediately noticed a huge difference from R5 and R6 which I have been using! Paired with RF 70-200 2.8, hit rate was unbelievable! 99+ percent hit rate...and I'm not talking about 1-3 players in view as seen on youtube review videos, but many times a frame full of players...locked on who I was looking at!Also, white balance was set to AWB and I've never had such perfect white balance in this gym!Have already printed out 8x10's from the game, some being heavily cropped and no way anyone would notice.LOVE this camera!!!
This machine is just as the headline says! So far I have shot an NBAGLeague basketball game, surfing, beach volleyball, skateboarding in a skate park, planes taking off and landing, and birds in flight. It was coupled with the new RF 70-200mm 2.8 L IS USM Z (white) and the RF 24-70mm 2.8 L IS USM lenses all producing stunning photographs. The two CF Express cards being used are ProGrade's 1TB. I haven't tried the video side yet as I have been having too much fun with the stills side! If you add this to your toolbox, you won't be disappointed!
This camera is simply Fantastic! I've used the EOS-1D X Mark II with the Canon 600mm f/4 IS USM lens for 8 years now shooting owls & eagles primarily. I skipped the 1D X Mark III and others in between so this change in technology was huge for me. I love the Mark II, and have taken some fun shots with it, but the thing I struggled with was the autofocus on moving targets. It would often focus on a bird in flight for a bit, then the ground or something in between, then hunt for the subject etc. This is something the R1 has not done after 2000 shots. It locks on the moving target and doesn't let go! Not only does it lock on, but it then looks for the eye of the bird and focuses on it whenever possible! The first two things I noticed about the R1, compared to the Mark ... MoreThis camera is simply Fantastic! Not only does it lock on, but it then looks for the eye of the bird and focuses on it whenever possible! The first two things I noticed about the R1, compared to the Mark II, was the lighter body weight followed by the gorgeous big, bright, clear viewfinder - what a pleasure to look through especially in low light. Shooting with the camera's 40 fps frame rate is great & I now have so many more choices of wing positions etc. to choose from when capturing birds in flight. The pre-burst feature is super-fun and I'm finding shots I've not seen before - like the eagle in the photo below just as it's about to take flight. The Wi-Fi data transfer directly to my phone is great to be able to send a few photos from the field to friends etc. I put two 500 GB Lexar Pro cards in my camera - 2250 shots has taken up 90 GB of space (Large Jpeg + Raw). For me, the R1 brings a new enjoyment to wildlife photography that I wasn't expecting. I highly recommend it & be prepared to have fun!
I received the R1 right before thanks giving, and it is a bit of a slow time of the year for me. I first used the camera at a HS wrestling tournament. The pre-capture feature is phenomenal, you literally never miss anything. The tracking and auto focus is insane. It holds onto the subject and never let go. Tracks them even when the subject is blocked then remembers who they are and grabs them when they are unblocked. As a sports photographer and phot journalist you must have this camera it is the best !!!!!!!!!!
A speed demon with the best AF I’ve ever used, great low light performance and 2 CF exp cards and a big buffer. Just brilliantImage quality is excellent, pre capture very useful and ergonomics of body and customization of controls amazingI moved up from an R3 many similarities but the differences are astoundingThe best sports/action/ bird camera there is that simple
The R1 is definitely a step up from the R3 which I also own. The feel of the larger body is noticeable yet quite comfortable. The button placement is just a little bit wider than the R3 and fits my hand perfectly, a lot of thought has gone into button placement. The viewfinder is fantastic with its 9.44 million dot OVF, very noticeable when I switch back to my R3. It is very fast at 40 FPS and the tracking has improved as well, once locked on it is sticky. It's nice having the 2 CF EXP cards and larger buffer as I ran into the buffer a few times with my R3, so far the R1 just wants to run. Admittedly, I don't use the 40 FPS function too often I tend to use either 20 or 30 FPS depending on my situation. Picture quality is very good for the size of the sensor which ... MoreThe R1 is definitely a step up from the R3 which I also own. The feel of the larger body is noticeable yet quite comfortable. Still lots to learn about the customization side of things which is all part of the DNA of this camera.
