Canon Eos R7 Mirrorless Camera with RF-S 18-150mm Lens Kit

Within moments I was literally staggered as the autofocus identified one of the birds and quickly focused in on the head, then the eye. I was so impressed I almost forgot to click the shutter. Almost. This is addictive. The camera has no right to be this good and my keep rate increased dramatically. Now the main problem is that I have more good images than ever to sort!A fantastic unit and I love it!

I've always wanted to try rolling car shoots and the vehicle subject tracking will come very handy for this!VIDEO- Headphone jack to monitor audio. - Mic input. The modern wireless mics of today almsot negate the need for the traditional overhead shotgun which requires extra equipment and set-up. - Image stabilization. I find myself now enjoying filming handheld and leaving the tripods/gimbals behind. - RF to EF adapter with drop-in filter. I immediately bought the variable ND filter for this adapter and to me it turns the R7 into a mini Canon C100 (which I also own!)- 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 recording. I've always been happy filming in 1080p 8-bit with a well exposed shot, but having these extra codecs and bit-depth is a very-very-very nice to have feature if the situation calls for it. OTHER- To get all of the above features and specs at it's price point was a no brainer for me. If I ever upgraded to a higher end Canon cinema camera or full-frame R line, I could always keep the R7 as a B-cam/backup. - The RF to EF adapter allowed me to use all my existing EF glass with surprisingly excellent performance. I've used adapters on other systems before and this OEM Canon adapter makes my older EF lenses perform flawlessly without any lag. - Form factor. Having all of the above features with such small foot print was a massive win. It's smaller than my 7D, and does almost everything my larger C100 does with better codecs and autofocus. - The ability to seamlessly switch between photo/video modes is crucial to my work. The R7 has allowed me to capture moments on shoots that I know I would've missed had I been using my 7D and C100 simultaneously. - Reliability. I have had other camera systems play up on shoots which always left the reliability question mark in my mind. In my experience, my Canon cameras have always performed and never let me down which gives me confidence in my equipment especially in a paid shoot. Ultimately, my R7 has paid for itself over several times since I've had it - and it continues to keep giving. It's the perfect hybrid APSC photo/video camera with it's unsuspecting looks yet generously powerful features. Just like my 10 years old Canon 7D and Canon C100, I trust that this R7 will continue to perform for the next 10 years and then some.

I was wary of buying another Canon as this was the second Canon camera that gave me a ERR01 message. However for the price and performance I decided to try the R7 and 18 to 150mm kit lens. I use the R7 for family events, travelling and special events. The R7 focuses well, shoots very fast and is very flexible for my needs. The 18 to 150mm kit lens is good particularly for travelling as it is light and the wide range handles the majority of travel photos. The sharpness is just not quite there particularly on the longer zoom and under poor light but I also think that the high pixel count shows up the weakness more. The connectivity is great using either your phone or computer. Connecting to devices is reasonably straightforward and reliable. I do miss the built-in flash of the EOS650D, even if it has it's limitation, it was quick and handy as a fill in flash for those awkward lighting conditions. I did buy a flash for the R7 but it takes time to setup and set the shutter mode in the correct mode for the flash to work. It is not weatherproof which is a disadvantage for a travel camera. Overall I am enjoying the R7.

Body NOT weather sealed, no protection against light rain

I've had the WORST experience of my life with Canon service. My R7 camera started showing an error 70 sign, and i sent it back for repair since it was still under warranty (less than a year since i bought it in B&H). Canon acknowledge the receipt of the camera and sent me an estimate for 0.00 since it was still under warranty. Seconds later i received another mail with an estimate of $389.00. When i called to figure out why were they charging me this money they apologized and said it was 0.00 but that they can't repair the camera nor substitute it because it has corrosion. They sent 3 photos supposedly from my camera.When i bought this camera it was advertised as weather sealed, how could it get such corrosion in ten months of use??? Canon EOS R7

Coming from a Canon 80D, it took me a few weeks to get used to the R7. This camera has quite a large menu. I had to invest some time in getting to know the various settings. Downloading the manual and reading it was very helpful, as well as watching YouTube videos where menu settings are explained.Right out of the box, I could see a couple of stuck pixels in my viewfinder. Doing an automatic sensor cleaning in the menu got rid of them right away. The factory autofocus settings are not ideal for me. Many of my test shots were out of focus. Going through the AF menu and getting everything set up for what I like to photograph took care of the issue. Some people like the smaller size of mirrorless cameras but I don't. I have really long fingers and prefer the size and feel of my 80D.Overall, this is a great camera and I get more keepers than I ever have compared with my past dslr cameras. 4 out of 5 stars.

I chose this as my first mirrorless camera because it is small and light compared to my EOS 5D MkII SLR camera. I wanted a light compact and reliable camera to bring on my holiday trips and it didn't disappoint. The images were sharp even with the kit lens. I love the subject tracking feature which is very useful for taking photos of animals and moving subjects. The only nagging problem with the camera is that whenever I flip to close the screen when the camera is not in playback mode, the focusing or tracking frame [ ] moves down to the bottom left hand corner of the display. Canon R7 Love it!!

I bought the Canon R7 with the 18-150mm lens because we do a lot of Jeep offroading where we lead groups and I wanted a small lightweight camera that could capture all the action of other vehicles going through obstacles. Besides offroading I mainly shoot birds and need a fast frame rate especially for hummingbirds. It is a fantastic camera and checks all the boxes I need. I use this camera on full manual. If you are only going to use it on Program or Auto mode you do not need this camera, probably won't like it and should chose a Point & Shoot. You have to change many settings to get this camera to perform to its capabilities. I always shoot handheld in the Jeep and there is no issue with high ISO's (up to 6400). If birding most of the time I use a Gimbal but with this camera and the Canon 600mm/800mm f/11 lenses I shoot handheld and have had excellent results.

From Great to Infuriating

My R7 worked well for a couple of months, then it didn't seem to be focusing well. I thought it was my fault, 'cause I'm kind of a camera noob, so I spent weeks trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Since I was using two used EF lenses with a Canon adapter, I eventually bought a new RF 100-400mm to see if that helped. It didn't.Now, I'm a boondocker. I live in a bus, and I spent all summer and most of fall camping around out west. I couldn't get the camera into Canon for servicing, because I was 800 miles from home base. When I got back to Texas, I sent it in.Canon said the imaging sensor assembly was out of position, and the repair was covered by the warranty. Followed the instructions to clear it, but the problem quickly got so bad that it would go straight to the error code when I turned it on, along with a fast, 5-shot shutter burst. This is where it gets weird.It started doing the same shutter burst even with the power switch set to Off! Even opening the SD card cover, again with the power switch set to Off, would trigger it. The camera's on its way back to Canon, who reminded me that they don't cover shipping damage, which makes me think they're going to try to weasel out of doing a warranty repair.I understand the R& has been great for a lot of people, but so far it hasn't worked out for me.

Low light and tracking limitations

After a few thousand wildlife and landscape images I know this camera pretty well but have not experimented with the creative setting. The camera has its limitations in low light and when there is little contrast between the subject and the background. For example, while photographing a Coopers Hawk in a PNW forest with the 100-500mm RF lens I couldn’t get a focus lock on the hawk standing on a limb about 30 ft. away. The background was the trunk of the Douglas fir it was perched on. I had to change location so the tree trunk wasn’t in the background but I still couldn’t get it to lock on the eye. It focus searched in and out until I finally switched the lens to manual focus and manually searched for a good focus. As long as I had the sky as a background it would maintain focus lock on the eagle. But as soon as it dove down to catch a smelt it would struggle to maintain focus lock because there wasn’t enough contrast between the eagle and the water, which was a dark blue/green. Any time a subject is close to the same color of the background the focusing software struggles. I missed hundreds of good shots that day due to the camera’s inability to maintain focus lock. The settings were correct for the situation (light, type and direction and motion, etc.) I’m hoping Canon fixes this in a firmware update but it may be a sensor limitation.
