Canon EOS R8 Mirrorless Camera With RF 24-50mm Lens

I am concerned about noise at ISO 3200, and will see if that is reasonable, or if it can be abated. Or, whether I need to go down. I dont know yet. Shooting with the mechanical shutter so far, at 12 frames per second has been wonderful. I am very pleased with that function.

Great camera!I ordered this camera when it was initially released. I can say mostly good things about it. The good part is it just works properly as one would expect, no major gotchas. Yep, thats the standard in 2022. Its not fantastic, and its not exquisite image quality, but its very good across the board. The dynamic range is good, the color is good, the AF is good, the servo tracking AF is decent, the video is great. I have used mine at dozens of weddings for photo and video, not a lot has gone wrong. I tend to use the RF 28-70mm the most. One thing I like about Canon RF is how well it works with older EF lenses, great stuff. The picture I attached of the Two Geese was taken with EF 20-35mm f/2.8 L. Its great for video handheld and its great if you want to mess around with really long 1 second exposures handheld, but in normal photography Im not 100% sure it is helping a whole lot. The annoying part is that when carrying the camera the IBIS is bonking around like a baby rattle. The odd thing is Canon released the R5C and did not put IBIS in that one when it actually seems great for video. For one thing, the IBIS can hide the rolling shutter that can be seen when shaking, so thats one nice thing about IBIS on the R5. Apparently it is cheaper to add in a whole IBIS mechanism than just sell a global shutter sensor.

Amazing Camera - with room for improvementI have had the EOS R5 for nearly 11 months now, coming from previous 5 series bodies 5D Mark II, Mark III and Mark IV, and I can easily say its a huge upgrade. Took some time to get comfortable with the new button layout, however I love being able to cycle through the Custom Modes using the M-Fn button -- no need to turn a dial. The increase in auto-focus points from 61 to 1053 full sensor coverage with Eye Tracking is great, as well as being able to shoot at 20 FPS with the Electronic Shutter. I love photographing wildlife so these are game changers for me. How about 240 FPS in Full HD, Canon? However, overheating while shooting video is still an issue, even with the updated firmware. An improved heat sink would help to address this, as third-parties have shown.A replacement for ZoomBrowser would be welcome, so you could quickly browse and rate .CR3 files.

1st Canon camera

This is my first Canon camera so the ergonomics were challenging at first. But thanks to David Busch's R5/R6 Guide book, I was able to get going rather quickly. The overall performance is excellent as other reviewers have already pointed out. I have only had three issues albeit minor ones.First, the silent shutter produces severe banding when shot under flickering lights. This was expected but I had hoped it wouldn't be so bad. Changing to the Electronic 1st-curtain mode and turning flicker on cured that. Not totally silent, but much better than the Nikons I was using. The electronic silent shutter works find in normal lighting.The second issue is the battery. I was use to getting 1000's of shots per battery but now I can get no more than 250. However, buying additional batteries cost money and adds weight to the backpack.Lastly, you MUST have the fastest memory chips to get the bursts to operate without quickly running into buffering issues. These when on sell are about $200 each. With my old chips that had write speeds of 120M/S, I would hit buffering in about 1 second. I got two 300M/S chips and it now goes without buffering. The cost was about $400 on sell.I definitely recommend this camera to anyone looking to make the switch to Canon. Since I have zero experience with other Canon models, I will leave that decision to current Canon users to decide

Amazing autofocus and image stabilization

I have been shooting with SLR's since the early 70's so there was a bit of a learning curve making the switch to mirrorless. After a month wiith the camera I can say that I can now capture images that I could never have done with my DSLR's. The auto focus and subject tracking are dead on and worked in low-light and low contrast situations. It found small, gray, city birds on sidewalks at dusk.Image stabilization is a huge improvement, I can now easily hand-hold a 70-200 F2.8 and get excellent results. All of my EF lenses (Canon, and others) mounted with the adaptor had full functionality.One caution: the camera is not yet supported by every editing suite out there, so some of the raw file renderings are strange. Best Dad Cam

I got the Canon R50 for everyday use and find it to be perfect for that. I have a full mirrorless system for professional use, but it's big and heavy and not fun to carry around with the kids for home documentation.Using the R50 with the kit 18-150mm lens is perfect for those trips to the zoo, playing in the park, or just everyday activities. Having a large sensor with a nice zoom gives you something you simply can't have with an iPhone. The colors on this camera look fantastic as well. I love the newer canon color science and the sensor and autofocus performance in the R50 is coming from much higher end cameras from canon. Buggy, Clunky, Frustrating

I'm a career photographer, have been for close to 40 years. I have shot exclusively with Canon products my entire career. In the past few years I've owned a few Canon mirrorless cameras, and I was very eager to purchase the R6 MK II. However I have to say that this is a $2500 waste of money. There are a few pros, like the drive speed, and low light performance, but the cons outweigh everything else.1) Not compatible with many third party lenses, including Tamron 28-75 F2.8 lenses. Bummer! I have two of these in my kit that are used for sports photography. Had to sell them both, as they won't function.2) Camera randomly locks up, always at the most inopportune times. It locked up on 3/7/23 and the oddity of it was that when it failed, it displayed the live image that was present in the viewfinder. Not a captured image/photo, but a live image. The unit was unresponsive, nothing worked on the camera. I had to remove the battery and reinstall in order to get the camera back up and running. It has locked up probably 3-4 times in the last month. I'm running the latest firmware v1.1.1, however the lockups happened with the original firmware was well.3) Custom settings do not keep on this camera at all. I will setup the shooting parameters (including 1/125 shutter speed) that I use, save them as C1-C3 and later when I go to use the setting the shutter speed always drops to 1/40th of a second. An no, I don't have the auto update enabled under this setting. This one is a head scratcher for sure.4) Painfully slow startup time. I mean like 4-5 seconds before the camera decides it's ready to shoot. Supposedly this was fixed with the firmware v1.1.1, but I haven't noticed a difference. I read on another thread that if bluetooth was disabled, the camera starts up faster. I have experienced that it sometimes starts up sooner, but not all of the time. It's random. If you swap out a battery, and introduce a new battery, expect a 4-5 second lag time before the camera wakes up. I've never experienced this with any other Canon DSLR or mirrorless camera.My best advice if you are looking to purchase a mirrorless is to go with the Canon RP. This little gem is solid and always ready to go. At under $1000 , you can buy two nice, dependable cameras that won't let you down.

I love the ability to shoot at night, compared with aps-c sensor, easily noticed so much noise.Mind you, I could not get the correct settings right to eliminate noise but m50 is still a great camera for beginners. Look forward to exploring additional features.

Just received the R50 with the kit lens 18-45mm. After reading countless reviews and watching just about all YouTube videos from photographers who received the pre production camera back in January, I decided to purchase this camera over the R7, R10 and the R8. I've previously owned the Sony a6300 and A7III, the Panasonic G95, and the Canon EOS RP. They all very good cameras, but I realized that I will never be a professional wedding or portrait photographer and didn't need those cameras. Also some were a bit heavy, complicated to use and difficult to connect to my IPad or phone to upload photos. I needed a camera that was small, had great image quality, was under $1000 and could easily transfer photos. The R50 is just that camera! Perfect upgrade camera/lens

I have been using Nikon DSLRs since 2013, and have mostly enjoyed them. But I have been wanting to upgrade to a mirrorless system for quite some time. I initially looked at Nikon, as that was what I knew. Then I looked at Sony, as they had the most time in the mirrorless game. I had found cameras I liked, but had never found 'the one' as none of them checked all my boxes. With this camera/lens pairing, I found exactly what I was looking for. A full-frame mirrorless body with a great first lens (it's what kit lenses should be: wide range of focal lengths, made of quality glass and fast enough for most situations.) The autofocus is as good as everyone says. I couldn't be happier.
