Take time to set it up properly for your objectives, the results will comeI am giving this camera 5 stars because in the very short time that I have had it, it has done everything that I expected of it. However, I have spent a ton of time preparing to use the camera because the options in the set up are seemingly endless, and having the camera do what you want it to do requires attention to set up. Luckily, there are endless videos on You Tube from users who share how they have set up the camera for their specific uses, and they are very helpful. The Canon manual is, I believe, 932 pages PDF, which is indicative of how complicated things can be. I have used the camera three times so far, to shoot birds, and have been pleased. I am concerned about noise at ISO 3200, and will see if that is reasonable, or if it can be abated. Or, whether I need to go down. I dont know yet. Shooting with the mechanical shutter so far, at 12 frames per second has been wonderful. I am very pleased with that function.

Great camera!I ordered this camera when it was initially released. I can say mostly good things about it. The good part is it just works properly as one would expect, no major gotchas. Yep, thats the standard in 2022. Its not fantastic, and its not exquisite image quality, but its very good across the board. The dynamic range is good, the color is good, the AF is good, the servo tracking AF is decent, the video is great. I have used mine at dozens of weddings for photo and video, not a lot has gone wrong. I tend to use the RF 28-70mm the most. One thing I like about Canon RF is how well it works with older EF lenses, great stuff. The picture I attached of the Two Geese was taken with EF 20-35mm f/2.8 L. The other two are the RF 28-70mm f/2 L. Oddly, the thing I ... MoreGreat camera!I ordered this camera when it was initially released. I can say mostly good things about it. Its great for video handheld and its great if you want to mess around with really long 1 second exposures handheld, but in normal photography Im not 100% sure it is helping a whole lot. The annoying part is that when carrying the camera the IBIS is bonking around like a baby rattle. The odd thing is Canon released the R5C and did not put IBIS in that one when it actually seems great for video. For one thing, the IBIS can hide the rolling shutter that can be seen when shaking, so thats one nice thing about IBIS on the R5. Apparently it is cheaper to add in a whole IBIS mechanism than just sell a global shutter sensor.

Amazing Camera - with room for improvementI have had the EOS R5 for nearly 11 months now, coming from previous 5 series bodies 5D Mark II, Mark III and Mark IV, and I can easily say its a huge upgrade. Took some time to get comfortable with the new button layout, however I love being able to cycle through the Custom Modes using the M-Fn button -- no need to turn a dial. The increase in auto-focus points from 61 to 1053 full sensor coverage with Eye Tracking is great, as well as being able to shoot at 20 FPS with the Electronic Shutter. I love photographing wildlife so these are game changers for me. The In-body Image Stabilization IBIS is another great new feature. It certainly makes shooting with non-IS lenses easier.I dont shoot much video, however I love the 120 FPS mode, which has allowed me to capture hummingbirds in flight, among other things. How about 240 FPS in Full HD, Canon? However, overheating while shooting video is still an issue, even with the updated firmware. An improved heat sink would help to address this, as third-parties have shown.A replacement for ZoomBrowser would be welcome, so you could quickly browse and rate .CR3 files.

A fabulous sports camera.
30 October 2022

I decided to upgrade from my Canon R to the R6. The Canon R6 has several improvements that are dramatically better. The biggest improvement is the focusing system which is extremely fast and accurate. It includes eye detection for people, animals and birds and it does work well. It also includes vehicle tracking if you shoot auto sports. The R6 can shoot at 12 frames per second mechanically and 20 frames per second with the electronic shutter which is fast enough for capturing birds in flight. DP's review of the extremely expensive Canon R3 showed no visual differences in low light performance to the Canon R6 which is pretty amazing. The Canon R6 photo quality is sharper and more defined than my R which is surprising considering it has fewer pixels. My guess is the improvement is related to better filtering, sharpening and noise reduction algorithms in the R6's newer processor. I considered a Canon R5 but frankly did not want to deal with the extra cards and computer requirements related to the bigger files.

A mini R3?

I shoot sports, senior pictures, weddings and events. I have had a 1DX II, EOS R in the past and currently own both the R6 and the R6II. I just shot my first basketball game last Friday with my two R6 cameras. Just a quick first thought on the R6 vs the R6II... The R6II has the most amazing autofocus shared from the R3 even surpassing the R6 for sports. I used the R6II with electronic shutter @ 20 frames a sec selection. Both the R6 and the R6II have the 20 frame rate but the II adds the 40 (too much for basketball and a very slow rate - too slow for sports. The quality of the pictures with electronic shutter on the R6II feels equal to the R6 using the mechanical shutter. The 85mm is a portrait lens right? Who would ever shoot a portrait lens for a fast moving game like basketball? Not only did the R6II nail focus with fast moving players, the pictures it produced were brilliant even with the electronic shutter. Highly recommend this camera!

Amazing autofocus and image stabilization

I have been shooting with SLR's since the early 70's so there was a bit of a learning curve making the switch to mirrorless. After a month wiith the camera I can say that I can now capture images that I could never have done with my DSLR's. The auto focus and subject tracking are dead on and worked in low-light and low contrast situations. It found small, gray, city birds on sidewalks at dusk.Image stabilization is a huge improvement, I can now easily hand-hold a 70-200 F2.8 and get excellent results. All of my EF lenses (Canon, and others) mounted with the adaptor had full functionality. One caution: the camera is not yet supported by every editing suite out there, so some of the raw file renderings are strange. The CR3 files are editable but take much more work to achieve color balance than the CR2's from my older cameras. I have been told by two vendors that full support for the R series Canons will be included in their next updates. Also, the Dual Pixel Raw Optimizer included with Canon Digital Photo Professional V. 4 does nothing that I can detect on my monitors.Overall, a great camera that allowed me to capture a few wall-worthy images after only about a week of intense practice.

I got the Canon R50 for everyday use and find it to be perfect for that. I have a full mirrorless system for professional use, but it's big and heavy and not fun to carry around with the kids for home documentation.Using the R50 with the kit 18-150mm lens is perfect for those trips to the zoo, playing in the park, or just everyday activities. I'm a career photographer, have been for close to 40 years. I have shot exclusively with Canon products my entire career. In the past few years I've owned a few Canon mirrorless cameras, and I was very eager to purchase the R6 MK II. However I have to say that this is a $2500 waste of money. There are a few pros, like the drive speed, and low light performance, but the cons outweigh everything else.1) Not compatible with many third party lenses, including Tamron 28-75 F2.8 lenses. Bummer! I have two of these in my kit that are used for sports photography. Had to sell them both, as they won't function.2) Camera randomly locks up, always at the most inopportune times. Bummer! I have two of these in my kit that are used for sports photography. Had to sell them both, as they won't function.2) Camera randomly locks up, always at the most inopportune times. It locked up on 3/7/23 and the oddity of it was that when it failed, it displayed the live image that was present in the viewfinder. Not a captured image/photo, but a live image. The unit was unresponsive, nothing worked on the camera. I had to remove the battery and reinstall in order to get the camera back up and running. It has locked up probably 3-4 times in the last month. I'm running the latest firmware v1.1.1, however the lockups happened with the original firmware was well.3) Custom settings do not keep on this camera at all. I will setup the shooting parameters (including 1/125 shutter speed) that I use, save them as C1-C3 and later when I go to use the setting the shutter speed always drops to 1/40th of a second. An no, I don't have the auto update enabled under this setting. This one is a head scratcher for sure.4) Painfully slow startup time. I mean like 4-5 seconds before the camera decides it's ready to shoot. Supposedly this was fixed with the firmware v1.1.1, but I haven't noticed a difference. I read on another thread that if bluetooth was disabled, the camera starts up faster. I have experienced that it sometimes starts up sooner, but not all of the time. It's random. If you swap out a battery, and introduce a new battery, expect a 4-5 second lag time before the camera wakes up. I've never experienced this with any other Canon DSLR or mirrorless camera. My best advice if you are looking to purchase a mirrorless is to go with the Canon RP. This little gem is solid and always ready to go. At under $1000 , you can buy two nice, dependable cameras that won't let you down.

Previously owned canon m50.... I must say a significant difference overall. Shooting wildlife, landscapes, portraits, macro, night photos is a game changer.More shutter speed features along with so many additional options I still need to explore. I love the ability to shoot at night, compared with aps-c sensor, easily noticed so much noise.Mind you, I could not get the correct settings right to eliminate noise but m50 is still a great camera for beginners. In addition, I had to order extra batteries as they didn't last very long, based on my usage.R6 MKII is extremely lightweight, which was my biggest concern. I love traveling light weight and needed something reliable and powerful. For me it was worth the invest plus with using EF-RF adapter, my EF lenses work fine.Battery usage is great, as I don't shoot all day. I have shot a few videos and using a small video mic. Buttons arrangement is good, will take adjustments with muscle memory. After a lot of research, I'm glad I upgraded. Price was good too. R3 and R5 were too costly, but focused more on serious sports or professional photographers. For those looking for cemos sensor, don't think it has that, even though it's listed. R6 MKII is great. Look forward to exploring additional features.

Love the Canon EOS R50!
23 March 2023

Just received the R50 with the kit lens 18-45mm. After reading countless reviews and watching just about all YouTube videos from photographers who received the pre production camera back in January, I decided to purchase this camera over the R7, R10 and the R8. I've previously owned the Sony a6300 and A7III, the Panasonic G95, and the Canon EOS RP. They all very good cameras, but I realized that I will never be a professional wedding or portrait photographer and didn't need those cameras. Also some were a bit heavy, complicated to use and difficult to connect to my IPad or phone to upload photos. I needed a camera that was small, had great image quality, was under $1000 and could easily transfer photos. The R50 is just that camera! I've used it for the last day or so and I am blown away by it. It's weightless and super easy to use. So far there's nothing I can honestly say that I don't like. The quality of the images is on par with the most expensive cameras I've owned. I will get the canon RF-S 18-150 mm lens to use on an upcoming Virgin Cruise lines Mediterranean cruise. Get this camera and you won't regret it. Adorama provides fantastic service! I won't use any other retailer for my camera needs.
