I was aware of its limitations in low light performance and bought this camera mainly to see if its longer zoom can beat my 525-mm equivalent telephoto lens on my mirrorless camera because I don't want to carry a significantly bigger and heavier lens for wildlife photography. The resolution of the fine JPG images straight out of the PowerShot SX70 HS at max focus length is comparable with cropped images from my 525mm lens. Luckily, I found a good denoise software and have been able to get clean and notably higher resolution images out of the raw images from the SX70 HS. Its image stabilization for video is also good. For its compact size, weight and price, I am happy with this purchase

After many months of research on super zoom bridge cameras I finally bought the Canon Powershot SX70 for my girlfriend. When it came I charged the battery for a couple of hours, put the selector on auto, pointed it at the moon, zoomed in to about 55x and snapped some pictures. Those pictures are absolutely amazing! We can see the crate fields, 2 large impact areas with tendrils extending out from them and a ton of other details. The amazing thing is that we didn't have a tripod, just holding the camera, pointing, zooming and clicking. That is a true testament to the image stabilization.We have taken some pictures of sunrises, cardinals, robins, bluejays, squirrels, foxes and several other landscapes and wildlife. I experienced some good results, but mostly were disappointing and did not meet my minimum expectations.I also found the electronics to be rather quirky. Though I haven’t experienced a humming noise during video recording as stated by another poster, I have seen other weirdness. For example to name a couple, the flash icon indicator would sporadically blink indicating to raise the flash, even in bright outdoor shooting with wider focal length. Also I noticed while focusing hold (holding the shutter down ½ ways to lock-in), the frame would not always continue to remain locked-in once fully focused and ready to shoot. Instead, it would stray from my locked focus and become out-of-focus prior to a full shutter release, forcing me to release the shutter and try again. Other oddities included seeing a yellow (cautionary) focus frame with an exclamation mark indicating a “lens retraction error, the camera will shut down” message! Indeed, the camera did shut down, so had to power back up to continue. There were other unusual occurrences as well.I tried and wanted to LOVE this camera with all the upgrades and "improvements" but am disappointed and cannot recommend the SX70 based on my own experience. So, I already returned it and went back to my faithful Canon SX40 at least for now.

While visiting the Seattle Space Needle, I shot wide and captured the whole downtown area. I could barely make out a flag on top of one of the skyscrapers and fully zoomed in on the flag using the optical lens of the Canon SX70hs. It was a cloudy and windy day. When I looked at the two photos I could not see the flag in the wide angle image. In the second image, zoomed in, the flag fully filled the frame. The flag, which was blowing in the wind, was very clear. I cropped the image on my computer and 'zoomed' in on the stars only. Absolutely amazing! The camera did something similar along the shoreline while cruising. I knew there where houses along the shoreline but I couldn't make them out by eyesight. I didn't want another interchangeable lens camera because I didn't want to lug around the telephoto lens / change it out whenever I needed to switch from close up to far away.Is this better quality than my telephoto lens? No. Does it take the best photos in the dark? No. I chose this camera specifically because I wanted the smallest / lightest camera with the best zoom capabilities I could find, so I could quickly pull it out of my cross strap bag for on-the-go birding. It works well for my purposes, and I'm happy with it! The Canon SX 70 HS is a point and shoot camera with an exceptional ability to zoom from 24mm to 1365mm. That in itself gives it great versatility in shooting in different photo circumstances. The picture quality overall is very good. The light weight provides for excellent portability. The two drawbacks are that it doesn't perform well in low light and the maximum F stop is 8.Overall however, a great hybrid choice especially when you don't have to be burdened with a heavy telephoto lens.

It gives me beautiful colors, and higher MP and nearly as much zoom as the Nikon P900. The Canon SX730HS is higher MP than my Nikon, and is also lighter weight, making it so much easier to hike with. I've barely begun to learn about this new camera's capabilities, and looking forward to learning more. I've gotten alot of shots I'm really pleased with, using this new addition to my hobbyist photography.
I bought the SX70 HS so I didn't have to carry my Canon EOS 5D III for birding. It is so much lighter. The zoom range is phenomenal. The picture quality is okay but you need plenty of light. Even in hazy days you will need to up the ISO which gets very grainy. I had to get used to the button placement which differs a lot from a full frame camera. I customized the AE Lock button as my AF button. I wish Canon would at least include a lens hood. Have not done any video yet but if you need an external mic you will need to get an attachable cold shoe. I bought one that connects to the 1/4 20 screw mount at the bottom of the camera. The camera is also handy for conference events where you can't get close to your subjects on stage. Im used to shooting with Nikon, with heavy/expensive lenses. My daughter, a professional photographer, actually suggested I try this little Canon SX70 for a point-and-shoot camera to take on trips when I dont want to haul all that equipment. I LOVE this camera! Im pleasantly surprised by the clear, bright images, and the flexibility it offers. Connecting to WiFi is super convenient and fun. The zoom is amazing, and images are still quite sharp. One huge disappointment is the lack of a hot shoe for a flash attachment. I cant imagine why Canon made this change on this model. The camera functions adequately in low light (3200 ISO) but not fabulous, and attached flash is well, you know inferior. But otherwise, this little camera is well worth the money. The reviews were so good on this I bought a new one online. I have only gotten great photos on a bright clear no wind day with it. I shoot in every mode trying to get good photos. I experience lots of noise/grain. I have to use adobe lightroom to help my photos look better, I do not like to edit pictures so I wish this took better quality photos. For the price it should. Also the battery symbol looks like it's full and then you go to take another photo and it says battery pack exhausted and shuts down. So make sure you have a 2nd battery which is not readily available in stores. And it charges with a wall charger unless you buy a special charger on Amzon. The photos attached is a sparrow in late afternoon partly cloudy day, the egret is late afternoon sunny day, the sunflower is a sunny day, one not edited, other sunflower is same photo auto fixed in lightroom. Cows in field 4pm overcast fall day. I bought it for the extreme zoom, however the photos sadly are not good enough to recommend anyone to buy it with the high price tag it has.
