For my needs it is excellent. It is truly a very portable lens, it shoots handheld even at 400mm with the 2x extender on and produces lovely images. For my trecking outings, the RF 15-35 2.8L, this RF 100-400, and a 2x extender, give me a practical coverage from 15 to 800mm. The gap from 35 to 100 is not something that I usually need in my landscape shots or that I cannot cover with a couple of steps back or forth. The 100-400 works quite good for macro shots as well, for my needs. I am absolutely thrilled with the results the usabillity and the overall cost.

Excellent lens
4 November 2022

As a photography enthusiast, I have many Canon EF lenses. After I bought the Canon R6 mirrorless camera, I have been using Canon EF-to-R adapter to use my EF lenses. It works very well. But, when I travel, I found the EF 70-200/4L + EF1.4x extender was kind of heavy and the image stabilizer was not good enough for dark light. So I bought this lens, which are better in those 2 areas. This lens is not 'L' lens, I did not expect it to outperform my EF700-200/4L+EF1.4x combo. However, I did several real photo tests at 100-300mm range on Canon R6 camera, there was really no practical difference between these 2 set. This is a very good surprise! The 400mm side could be improved. That's why I only give it 4 stars, not 5.

Great for an amateur like me.

For context, I should say that I am absolutely an amateur photographer and my lenses are all in the same category as this one, or cheaper. Also, this is the first 200mm lens I've ever had. That said, I find it has strengths that easily justify its price, and its weaknesses will probably fade as I get more practice with it.The stabilization is really good, but still for birds (not my main subject) you will still need to work hard to get your shots. For a lot of more stationary or at least less herky-jerky subjects, it's plenty. It's light in the sense of being lighter than similar lenses, but make no mistake: if you're holding your camera with one hand, after a while this lens will make that hand tired. It looks a little funny extended, but that's the fashion ... MoreFor context, I should say that I am absolutely an amateur photographer and my lenses are all in the same category as this one, or cheaper. I got the cheap hood which works just fine. The control ring has turned out be be super useful on this lens -- much more than on the 35mm -- because changing the ISO is a regular thing when shooting any kind of action.I didn't buy it for portraits but I did take a few and they were pretty bad.So far though it looks very, very promising for my plans: urban photography (in a huge city, with a river) and landscapes (on a volcanic island), plus whatever weird things I see in the distance and want to shoot.I will echo the advice I got from many YouTubers and also from the experts at B&H in New York: if this is what you can afford, and you don't want to spend four times this much, then just get it.

Has flaws...

The price went down so I went ahead and bought one for my RP. The lens is solid and light weight but to my surprise it's long and not compact. It focuses fast and you can override the focusing ring. A couple of negatives were was a hit or miss. Majority of images were soft after experimenting thru different settings, Av, Tv, P modes, changing shutter speeds and aperture settings. Video was sharp. I find I needed to use a high shutter speed to minimize shakiness at the max zoom range although the IS was on. Another concern was that when I zoomed fast there was a lag on the viewfinder. I have a Tamron 18-400 lens and although it's heavier it's almost the same length using the adapter and the pictures are sharper. In the end I returned the lens. It does NOT cost almost $ 3,000 dollars ,But, aside from the Price .. the Weight .. the Size .. Magnificent lens!

Canon's RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 is perhaps the single greatest buy in the photography world today. They could have easily charged double the price. What you get for $500 is an outstanding optic, capable of producing simply phenomenal images. Read the reviews on line. They are near unanimous in singing the praises for this lens. Is it slow at f/8 at 400mm? Not really. Image stabilization combined with the sensitivity of the EOS Rs sensors more than makes up for the f/8. You simply can't think in terms of film anymore. Today's f/8 is yesterday's f/4. In terms of economics to get a single stop faster you're going to need to cough up more than four times the cost which I guarantee you will not note the single stop more in speed. There's certainly no gain in image ... MoreCanon's RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 is perhaps the single greatest buy in the photography world today. They could have easily charged double the price. There's certainly no gain in image resolution. Same goes with the RF line of f/4 L lenses versus their RF equivalents at f/2.8. The additional cost is simply not worth it. You will not regret purchasing the 100-400mm lens. It's magnificent!

Truly amazing image quality, on par with L glass
26 July 2022

I bought this lens because of reviews stating that said the image quality is fantastic, plus it is much smaller in size and lower in weight compared to L glass. I'm going on a landscape photo trip that will involve miles of hiking every day, so size and weight are critically important. I have the EF 100-400 f/4-5.6 L (a wonderful beast), and while the images are amazing, I did not want to carry that thing all day long. For the price, I am simply stunned by the image quality of this RF 100-400. I took it out for some test shots and I believe it is every bit as sharp as my EF 100-400, especially when it comes to edited and printed images. Yes, it is a few stops slower, but for landscape work on a tripod, that does not matter. And I can shield it from rain with a cover ... MoreI bought this lens because of reviews stating that said the image quality is fantastic, plus it is much smaller in size and lower in weight compared to L glass. I am very much looking forward to the trip with this lens.
