I used this f/4 for a catalog shoot. Went up a stop or two in order to be in the sweet spot. I put the camera on a tripod and more than 98% of my shots were SHARP. Not just the eyes of the model, but the small jewelry she was modeling. It's been one of the toughest things for me to get the rings/necklaces/earrings all sharp while getting the model to give me some movement. I shot at 105mm. 74mm. 85. 35. 24. And it was like I couldn't miss. The producer was so happy. We have never had this many shots SHARP in all areas. In the past we have had to shoot the ring separately, photoshopping it in later. This time, we can blow up these images for a department store and they will shine. Again, for a STUDIO SHOOT with a seamless as BG, this lens absolutely shines. I was using an older EF 24-105mm lens with my Canon R6 (and EF-RF adapter). The lens creep became so bad with this older lens, I just knew I had to upgrade. I finally bought the RF 24-105mm f/4 lens, and I was surprised at how much faster the focusing was with this RF lens. Not only that, but this lens has a Lock feature now, so I can make sure the telephoto part of the lens in locked in while I'm walking around scouting out my next composition. The Control Ring on the end of the lens, is now setup for handling my exposure compensation, and is so much easier to adjust now. I'm more then happy with my upgrade, and now wish I'd switched sooner.

When I bought my first full-framed Canon 5Diii, I purchased a refurbished Canon EF 24-105mm f/4, and it served me well as a favorite go to and my first red ring lens. I went through the generations of 1DX cameras using the EF 24-105mm, even to the newly purchased Canon R3s Well, I sold that lens to buy the RF version of the 24-105mm, and glad I did. Though, still an f/4, the lower ISO noise from the R3s makes for a more perfect match, especially for my sports photography for both indoors and out. While the zoom twist is a bit stiffer, at least the barrel stays in place, when in active use, though a lock switch is available. I have set the Control Ring to make quick adjustments to ISO when I shoot in Manual. This RF lens does carry a stiffer price, than when first ... MoreWhen I bought my first full-framed Canon 5Diii, I purchased a refurbished Canon EF 24-105mm f/4, and it served me well as a favorite go to and my first red ring lens. I have rented a lens from Lensrentals and it was such a great experience that I am still happy by the service they provide. First of all the price was pretty affordable and the process of renting was very easy. You receive a lens via FedEx well packed and secured and then you have to drop the same box in any FedEx. That’s it. Here is a picture I took with this lens and Canon 5D classic and the picture is cropped of course. The lens is very sharp even on f4.0 and AF is pretty fast. I tried the lens on cropped Canon XSI and on Canon 5D classic and on Canon 6D. The results were beyond my expectations. I’ll definitely come back.
I been through two of these in the EF version from the original 5D through the 5DSR. Its real workhorse lens that was always in my bag no matter what I was shooting. I use other EF L glass via adapters very happily on an R5. But for some reason not the EF 24-105. I sold my last EF version of his lens. After about a year of working without it I had to add the RF version back to my bag. Why did I wait so long?? I'm very happy with other RF glass I have that falls somewhere in the 24-105 range. I have the 35mm f/1.8, 85mm f/2.0 and the 24-240mm. I like and will keep all of those lenses for special tasks where they excel, but this RF 24-105 will have a full time place in my bag for a long time... its a new version of my old reliable.
L is for lousy. I used the EF 24-105L for 14 years prior to the internal electronic ribbon connection dying...a known issue. After 14 yrs I was excited to go mirrorless with an R5 kit. This lens is no better than the EF 24-105L version 1. The RF version is horrible off center at 24 mm and does not improve with stopping down to F8. At least the EF version improved at F8 in most focal lengths. Chromatic distortion is also terrible. Look carefully at professional reviews: some truly hate this lens and others subtlety say the image quality is fine for the zoom range (lipstick on the pig?).I have a 14 year old EF 70-200L F4 (version 1) and it is dramatically better than the RF24-105L F4. 1.5 decades should of allowed Canon to design a better 4x zoom.
The RF 24-105mm f4.0L IS USM is one of my favorite lenses I've ever had. I originally had the EF 24-105mm f4.0L II and thought it was good, but didn't really feel the need to upgrade, but an R6/24-105mm f4.0 combo was available so I decided to pull the trigger and fell in love with the RF version. I feel the EF version was alright but the added sharpness and personality of the RF version won my heart.I am a professional photographer/videographer and although I use this lens for pretty much everything, I love using it for video. Your camera becomes very versatile with the lens, and I find myself spending more of my time on the zoom side of it. Canon's lens strategy for the RF system continues to frustrate photographers who are already heavily invested in it. It must be admitted that there very little worth having in-between the plastic, rather cheap looking bottom of the line consumer grade products and always impressive but highly expensive 'L' standard lenses. I feel this is unhelpful to everyone including Canon because loyal customers are having doubts about staying with them in the medium to long-term. There are other options out there and far more affordable ones too. On the positive side however, Canon continues to manufacture some wonderful pieces of equipment and this is undoubtedly one of the best all-round examples in the present lens lineup.I have bought numerous camera and lenses from five different brands over the past fourteen years. Not one of my Canon purchases has ever let me down, which is why I have stuck with them and have faith in them to continue to deliver. This is the first universal zoom lens of theirs I've tried however, having previously had wide-angle and telephoto zooms, together with several prime lenses, predominantly in the EF mount. The issue with zooms in general is that they rarely perform well throughout the focal range and at most working apertures. So you typically need to concentrate on how good they are at the focal lengths you personally use most often. This one is different, inasmuch as there is no obvious weakness, so that you can produce great images at virtually all settings. Sharpness is never any issue and the colours are true to form Canon. I wouldn't say there is a great deal of micro-contrast to be had straight out of the camera, but that's the only criticism I can offer.Build quality is excellent, albeit very different from the look and feel of EF lenses of the past. Those older lenses somehow tend to appear to be more solidly built. This lens balances well on my EOS R camera so that I typically cradle it, but could easily get away with just using one hand on the camera. The control ring is a useful addition, which I personally use for exposure compensation. It takes a little bit of getting used to because it is quite closely placed to the manual focus ring. The image stabilisation function is efficient and invaluable, especially on a camera body such as mine that lacks it. Focus is virtually silent and extremely fast. So rapid in fact that I often find myself looking for the confirmation dot in the viewfinder to confirm that it's ready to fully press the shutter button.I bought this lens because I knew it would serve as a perfect walkaround for a variety of settings and situations outdoors. I often procrastinate about what lens to fit to my camera, but this takes away the doubt for at least 80% of the photos I typically plan to take. In my case that's mostly landscapes, seascapes and architecture. I do also possess an RF 50mm f/1.8 STM prime lens and a 14mm f/2.8 lens by a third party manufacturer. For everything else, I'll stick an EF-RF adapter on my camera and use one of my older lenses. But frankly, this one is so good that I won't have to very often in the future.Thoroughly recommended. In my opinion, Canon's best ever universal zoom and quite possibly the finest affordable version by any lens maker. In this case, accept no substitute and you surely will be delighted with it.
I bought this as part of my R6 kit, bought here at BH.When reviewing my wedding photos I keep checking the data and getting mind blown when I see the image I'm looking at was taken with this lens. It's crazy sharp. Like,....wowzers.I have deep pockets and buy anything I want. This is nearly as sharp as my $1800 35L II F1.4. It's sharper than my 70-200L (latest EF model) in the 70-105 range that overlaps the 70-200.It's really fantastic. What I don't like is that the zoom is a bit stiff. And yes, some people say the background blur isn't as pleasing as some other lenses. Well, i think that's cause it's an F4. I can't ding this lens for those two gripes as it's only an $1100 lens, again packed with my R6.If I sell the R6 body I will keep this lens. I can't ding this lens for those two gripes as it's only an $1100 lens, again packed with my R6.If I sell the R6 body I will keep this lens. It's really really good. Again, I've owned everything, and typically not a fan of zooms, but these new RF lenses are changing my mind quickly. Now, it won't replace my 35 f1.4 in low light, or my sigma 135 f1.8 as 1, it can't reach that far and doesn't have the background destroying ability. But for a walk-around lens, I love that it's F4 so that it's lighter and smaller than the (less-zooming) f2.8 version.
I had just replaced my Canon 70D with a Mirrorless R camera, and wanted a walk-a-round less that took best advantage of the full frame capability of the R.I was not at all disappointed! The lens is a bit narrower than the 18-135 it was replacing, but I haven't even noticed a difference in everyday use. The images it produces are very sharp and full of color. The body of the lens is exceptionally robust and the extension/retraction of the barrel is firm and smooth. Focusing is very quick and quiet.I've yet to run into an everyday situation where I don't have enough reach, or can focus on relatively close objects, so I'm very happy with my decision and don't regret the expense at all.
