I had to remove the AC power and the battery to get it to reboot. I continued the show. When one of the sd cards are full, the manual says it will stop recording. Well in this case the sd card recording 4k got full first and the camera locked up. Same as above. I had to remove all power to get it to shut off to power reboot it.Next day I contacted canon customer support and he said try it now. Sure enought by repeated pressing on the record key, it locked up. Then he said try another brand of sd card. I changed sd cards and could not get it to lock up.The SD card that locks it up was sandisk u10 s3 v30. The card that worked was the samsung u10s3 v30. I asked if he had a list of acceptable cards, and he did not.The Second problem was that I bought this to be able to stream directly from it since now I used an external encoder. It turns out it only streams in RTSP with a password. My livestream provider, vimeo only accepts rtmps. so it would work.I tried a workaround, I used my Livestream Studio software as a switching software. It accepts camera inputs of RTSP but not if they have a password.Next workaround, I tried to bring it in with my switcher using NDI protocol, no NDI.So right now its internal streaming encoding device is not useful to me at all.John Lenihan

Tons of button customization options. Camera remote allows touchless control at full zoom, so absolutely no camera motion. I always dreamed of owning the XF705, but it was too expensive for our small film crew. Then this came out :-))). Check out samples on our website using my handle. The lichen video close ups we're all recorded with this camera.

I posted an unhappy review about this Canon, however, after aday of updating my Mac and installing new codecs the quality of the final filelooks much better. It is still softer compared to both Sony cameras, which Ihave, however it has its won charm. Thinkthat this camera better in event production, where softer footage lookspreferable, vs with Sony, which I use for the nature documentary production andsharper image plays better.

I run a video production company focusing on creative arts and events. We shoot a wide range of music videos, live concerts, live-streaming, and some doc work. After getting started with Canon in the 5Dii generation, I've stuck with them through the years, adding 5Diii's, C100 mkII's, C200's, a C70, and our newest addition of 3 XF605's.It's one thing to shoot a doc or narrative with a cinema camera -- when you have time to truly compose the shot - including trying different lenses, adding filters, adjusting lights, etc, the C series has an intuitive feel and exceptional image quality. However these quickly lose their edge when switching to event or live-streaming duties -- changing lenses, attempting to pull focus and zoom, and ultimately having to rely more on touchscreen menus makes it tougher to make C series cameras provide good results. At first I scratched my head as to why I was 'regressing' to research at "old school" camcorders - but that didn't last long. The XF605 came out and was surprisingly affordable, had amazing 10 bit image quality, excellent optics and low light performance, and Canon's newest (and arguably best) AF system. AF is a naughty world in the 'cinema' world, for obvious reasons, but in the event world, it's a game changer. For the 5% I feel like I've "lost" in image quality from my C70 (shooting 4K, 10 bit), I've gained 100% in low-light performance, efficient workflow, silky smooth zooms and a form factor that makes it simple to pull the camera out of the bag and get solid results -- time after time.I just recently shot and live-streamed a three-day music festival with a fleet of static C-series cameras, two PTZ's, a C70 as a master shot and the three XF605's as roaming cameras. The results were spectacular. The artists were extremely pleased with the quality, and the ease of use made the investment worth every penny.if you're shooting events, this camcorder is a beast. No, it's not a cinema camera.... but it has the image quality and low light performance, and delivers all the features you need for live shows and events.
There is serious power in this camcorder. The clear standout is the autofocus system which is shockingly consistent, perhaps the best that Canon has released so far, esp when paired with the touchscreen to point and track your focus. Combine that with the awesome zoom lens and you will have a fun time. Also comes with every port you'd want from a video camera with great battery life (3hrs from 1 BP-A30) and convenient SD memory with dual slots.Image stabilization is generally good to great, but sudden movements can lead to unnatural looking robotic movements, albeit still passable footage. Custom white balance is also limited to tungsten/daylight defaults and gray capture modes.Build quality is excellent as always. The articulating touchscreen is bright and ... I LOVE flipping the switch to open or close the lens. Every part of the camera feels very durable. The viewfinder is a little disappointing. I don't know if it's possible to increase the size of the VF display (I've looked for it) but it is surprisingly small for how much black space is left. It's mainly useful for framing and stabilization.Seriously, what an amazing TANK of a camera in a relatively light and all-in-one package. Canon did a great job with this one. Bravo!
I have been using Canon Cameras since about 2010, within the XF and XA series. I have purchased 2 of these and MAN are they incredible!!! The image quality is just awesome, very cinema like when I put it next to one of my cinema cameras! Plus, getting 4:2:2 out of this internally is a game changer for my workflow. Also, 12G SDI really helps for my live broadcasts and the external controls are fabulous when I am doing a run and gun. LOVE the depth of field while not needing to hunt for it and the AF does amazing (see phote).Overall, would HIGHLY recommend this!If there is one caveat, the menus are DEEP, finding a setting can be time consuming, BUT when you have THIS many features and options, one needs to learn the camera too.
I have been in Sony for decades and this is my first Canon becausemy college did not have funds for the better camera. So far, I am notimpressed. If I play the file using VLC it looks good. When I use Adobe, thefile looks like more HD, not 4K. I feel Adobe has poor codecs to read the extensionof the file. Maybe FCP pr DaVinchi can read the file? However, it is additionalmoney and moving to the new platform, which I would not be happy. In addition, everyfile requires editing and color correction, which I barely do with Sony andblue color had lot of grayish in it, which is hard to fix. I purchased thiscamera using my college money and I can use it, however, I would not buy thiscamera on my own money.
I use this camcorder to film high school sports, primarily football and basketball. For the past 4 years I've been using another brand of pro 4k camcorder with a 1/2.3 MOS sensor. So far, filming in U.S. high school gyms this XF605 provides much improved color and much less low-light noise than the prior vidcam. I'm using the general autofocus setting for basketball (not just face or eye detection modes) and it's doing a wonderful job of keeping the main players and ball action in focus without hunting or choosing background over the foreground action. In gyms the auto WB hasn't done a good job, but when I create a custom WB with a grey card in each gym (which is very simple and easy to do with the XF605) the results are superb, even with a gym's poor and ... I've manually set my shutter and let the camera handle gain, iris & exposure and it's done a great job (my previous camcorder wouldn't allow partial manual settings - it was all manual or all auto). I'm using V60 SDXC II cards to record 4k 60p 10 bit 170 mbps mp4 files and they keep up with the recording rate and are 3 times faster downloading than the SDXC I V30 cards used in my prior vidcam. So far I'm 100% satisfied that I updated and upgraded to the XF605, and anticipate that I should get many years of quality, no-fuss results from it.
Coming from an XF400, this is an enormous upgrade. The buttons are laid out perfectly. I've never had this convenience. It is so worth the extra cost.Network connectivity is important to me, especially since this is my first camera without a wireless remote. Getting browser remote working takes patience. You have to 'forget' your regular wi-fi connection every time (that's Android's doing). You have 2 passwords, one for camera access point (1 time entry if you use that) and another to access the web interface, each time. There are separate network and connection settings to configure. If you are patient, this actually becomes easy and completely reliable. Took me 90 stressful minutes to crack the code.Every focus feature Canon has is packed into this and they ... AF-Boosted MF is a dream. The camera is quite a bit larger than an XF400 but strangely light-weight, which is really good! The huge hood has excellent benefits. You can leave huge filters and diopters (500D) attached with the hood in place. Its also effortless to attach and remove. Never thought I'd be so happy to have a labeled lens barrier switch.Shutter angle is new to me and is now the default. Set it and forget it! Also my first manual aperture ring, which I now totally get.I shouldn't leave out the very first thing that jumped out at me. The rocker arm rocks!!! It takes no effort or concentration at all to perform smooth slow zooms. What a quality mechanism!I use it with a Ninja Inferno, which it pairs well with. The 605 includes most of the assistance function of the recorder so it is great get to pick which works best. There's tons more, but long story short, it is everything I was hoping it would be. No more drooling over the unaffordable XF705 :)
I have been a Canon XF series camcorder user for years. I had the XF300, XF100, and XF200s. I skipped the XF400s because of the prosumer body.As a part of XF100/200 Facebook groups, many were dreaming of Canon adding features to the XF200 such as 4k, and more. For years I covered events and produced ENG videos with my XF200s. The XF200s were a perfect size with the three-ring control.I purchased two C70s along the way for different looks from changeable lenses, and DOF to using Luts, C-Logs, and color grading. I really got into the cinema look. Here comes the 605...I ignored the XF705 because it was as large as the XF300. I assumed the same with the XF605 without reviewing it. I started reading up on the XF605 and realized, to me, it is the upgrade to my XF200s.Canon also tells me the XF605s are good B-cams for the XF605, C300 III, and C500. I will say to my C70s also. Many features from the C70 seem to have been placed in the XF605.The 4k, the touchscreen LED, the SD cards, the size, the 1-inch, C-Log3, ND filters, and more are features that really excite me. How excited am I? I purchased two XF605s to go along with my two C70s. This arsenal will be used in upcoming documentaries, films, sports, and ENG.The on-camera mic almost sounds like a directional mic. It is amazing. I cannot with for the firmware upgrades coming.I often ponder whether would I have purchased the C70s if the XF605s came out first.Minor issues/Suggestions:Placing anything on the front cold-shoe, such as a light or wireless receiver, will block the LCD from closing. On occasion, I have hit the switches near the auction section cover.I haven't checked, but an auto ND filter would be great to have like the XF200 had.Overall, its a great camera from performance to pricing.
