A great upgrade from crayola, but don't expect an oil pastel

I really like these, they have a smoother, nicer texture and more intense color than the old crayola crayons, but they're not soft like oil pastels. This is kind of nice because a harder texture means you won't use it up as fast and it won't smear easily onto the opposite page of a sketchbook, but it does blend poorly, unfortunately. The color will lift just a little bit with water, not a major smearing but the water will pick up a very slight tint. May not be noticeable if whatever you're layering on top has a strong pigment of it's own, but you may want to do some test swatches to be sure. The color name is very accurate, sort of a dark-brick-maroonish red. #sweepstakes

Buttery, and why not another white crayon

Not all the crayons have the same butteriness. But I like how they lay down, especially how they layer on top of each other. They blunt very easily but that is the price we pay for butteriness. Compared to their pencils, I like the crayons better. The color could be brighter on some, purple, for example. Since there is room in the tin box for one more crayon, and since I've been using white a lot, I would suggest to the manufacture to add tow white crayons. I bet everyone uses white frequently.

Creamy, Buttery Color

Absolutely creamy in texture. Excellent blend ability and rich color. There are some semi transparent colors, but that can be overcome with an opaque layer and blending if you are inclined. These behave more like an oil pastel than a crayon so crumbles are minimal. I wanted to see how they behaved on bristol, watercolor paper, drawing paper, and pastel paper. It has not disappointed me so far. These are a bit pricey, but given what one can spend on traditional pastels, this is worth the money.

Fantastic, but why did they change them!
23 October 2023

Have used Neocolor 1's for the last 25 years, fantastic all purpose sketching crayon. Nothing better. So I wanted to refresh my stock and purchased the 40 full set. Initially everything looked great, same dependable product. However when went to prep them I was very disappointed! For some reason they had changed the paper covering and adhesive. I use these most times flat for broad sketching, shading and bold lines. I remove half the paper on the blunt end leaving the sharp end so I can use either end. The adhesive now sticks to the crayon and is extremely hard to remove !! So now I'm trying to use various solvents to remove the sticky adhesive. Very time consuming and messy. I want the old thin easily removable paper cover back.

Good opacity over dark paint as well as water-resist effects
19 May 2024

Useful for both watercolor and acrylic paintings used over or under the paint (as long as you don't pile up too much on under acrylic it will be fine). White: preserves the white of the paper under watercolor, opaque enough to cover dark paint. Light Gray: creates subtle highlights under watercolor or over dark color. Black: good for textured lines under watercolor, and over acrylic paint. These are also smudgeable for different effects.

Great for Sketchbook Painting and Mixed Media
19 December 2023

I got these after some deliberation and lots of thought and research. These aren't as popular as the Neocolor IIs.They are somewhat similar to oil pastels but with a much harder consistency. You also have to work light to dark otherwise you will miss the opportunity to lighten values moving forward. They layer well, although some colors achieve this better than others. They blend with some effort well either through layering or with your finger. I have not had a breakage problem thus far with mine and they had arrived in one piece. I have used them by themselves with full coverage in 10 A5 and 2 standard printer sheet size pieces. I have also used them over watercolor and markers to a more limited degree in my mixed media work. I have used them by themselves with full coverage in 10 A5 and 2 standard printer sheet size pieces. I have also used them over watercolor and markers to a more limited degree in my mixed media work. They are basically woodless colored pencils, therefore they work great with colored pencils. With the amount of work I have fully rendered with them they all have maintained their points for the most part and they have not required any sharpening. I feel like these will last years! I look forward to trying them with colored pencil solvent, sanded surfaces, and possibly seeing if they can go over acrylics. I would guess they would work great over traditional gouache, with them working well over watercolors. Another strength is the color range, I predominantly do landscapes right now and this selection is highly adaptable for that. You honestly could finesse any subject with the full selection alone. I don't think they provide good detail work, but that is not what I was after with them so I'm still happy with them. I think you could go in with a soft colored pencil to refine details. I like the tin, but if your taking these around with you, definitely make sure to strap them down and secure them tightly as the tin has a tendency to pop open in your bag.

I'm in love
8 March 2024

I was looking for something that would let me do quick little studies with opaque color since I often feel like I torment myself to death with little details and think I should practice being freer. I had just been using crayons for that purpose but I didn't like how grainy they were, even just for sketchbook experiments, and asked myself if there was something like a cross between a crayon and an oil pastel. That's what these are. Smoother and more saturated than crayons, cleaner and more durable than oil pastel. I'll probably end up needing to restock the black and white ones before long.

Love it!!
1 September 2024

I use these for gesture drawings to be followed by a hard pastel figure drawing. These are NOT glorified crayons- they're a category of their own. They are buttery like oil pastels, but they don't smear or blend like oil. The pigment comes down nicely and stays, they can be sharpener. My one negative is that the glue from the wrapping lingers and collects whatever dust may be on my fingers (pastel dust). I use a utility knife to scrap it off. No biggie#sweepstakes

Metallic Colors To Add Richness To Your Work
22 November 2023

I wasn't sure what I was going to get, honestly. When I opened the tin, I was very happy. Rich metallic colors, amazing creamy texture, and an almost sensuous feel as the crayons covered the page. I can see using these as accents and highlights to bring a bit of bling to a piece. Silver highlights to water or metal robots and plates, gold for bright cloud accents in a spectacular sunset, even a shimmering rainbow or sun dog in your landscape. Of course, a hummingbird becomes a jewel with these crayons. Worth the investment.

Most Pastels Were Broken Upon Arrival
19 January 2024

I use Neocolor I wax pastels for mark making and whenever I need a water-resistant color. I think the quality of Neocolor I pastels is great (as it is with other Caran d'Ache products), except that most of the pastels were broken when they arrived. I noticed first that the tips of nearly all of the pastels were broken off, and then upon picking one up, it broke in half -- then another one, then another. I did not use these; they broke just upon handling them. I'm working with Blick now to return them; I'm not sure I should try to order another set of these at this time.
