Pastel Pencil are the highest quality dry pastels made by Swiss brand Caran d'Ache. They were made with clockwork precision and attention to every detail. To achieve such a high quality product, Caran d'Ache took care of the highest purity of used materials. Each created color is unique and one of a kind. It took over six months of testing to achieve a wide range of luminous colors, the right smoothness and high resistance. The stylus of the pastel pencils is a unique paste, which is prepared by hand and put into round matrices that give it the right shape. Then stylus is dried thoroughly in a special oven. The finished colored pencils are carefully glued between two pieces of strong cedar wood. The finished pencils are cut out and covered with four coats of clear varnish. The next step is to apply a color to the tip of the pencil that matches the color of the stylus. The final step is to sharpen the pencils gently and carefully into a sharp tip. Pastel Pencils are incredibly smooth to apply and they blended perfectly. They are known for their very high concentration of pigment in each of the 84 colors. They have unsurpassed luminosity and purity of color, excellent covering power and extremely high lightfastness (Standard Blue Wool Scale from 3 to 5 stars). They allow to achieve both delicate, almost transparent shading, as well as incredibly intense, covering effects. Dry pastels in pencil have a hexagonal, gently rounded shape and a very thick stylus with a diameter of 4.7 mm. It makes crayons up to 35% more efficient than other available on the market. The use of the best raw materials, pigments, adhesives and the highest quality cedar wood has contributed to the creation of the world's best dry pastels in crayon. Pastel Pencil dry pastels are produced to the highest standards, ASTM D4236 and manufactured with respect for the natural environment.

I am very familiar with several brands of professional grade colored and/or pastel pencils. Caran D'Aches are usually eliminated because the price is so much higher than the next level of pencil and the quality is comparable. However, when I received my Caran D'Ache pastel pencils, there was a very clear difference in the quality of this pencil compared to the other three brands considered to be top-tiered pastel pencils in the pastel art areana. The first thing I noticed is that they are a bit heavier than the other brands. Although I could not afford the 'full' set, I do plan on adding to my collection as money permits. I do wish that the price were a tad more economical as it is prohibitive to many in the art field.

Caran d'Ache pastel pencils are so soft and smooth compared to harder pastel pencils. I love the colors you get, including this green! Blends wonderfully when you have enough layers on!#sweepstakes

Best opaque white coverage but larger pencil diameter limits sharpening option. Also softer than other pastel pencil bands so sharpening is more limited. Expensive but a good option when an opaque white pastel pencil isneeded.

First of all, these are not cheap. But, in art supplies, to get the best, you often pay premium prices.I wrestled with whether or not to order these. Mainly due to the price, and the fact that I don't normally use this kind of medium as much as I do water soluble pencils or crayons. But I pulled the trigger, and I am glad I did.Derwent has a good pastel pencil that I enjoy. But these layer better, have a more useful palette of colors, and simply feel good going on the paper. The colors, be they darker or lighter, are vivid. Layering is a dream. I think they work best on a paper that doesn't have a heavy tooth, as that tooth can wear down the points. But the color goes on like it belongs there.Regarding the Derwent product, that is another pencil that is very ... MoreFirst of all, these are not cheap. But the color goes on like it belongs there.Regarding the Derwent product, that is another pencil that is very very fun to use. But this one I think is now my favorite. It just is so fun to use, and the results are fantastic.I am a big fan of this company's products in general. This is as good as any of their others. If not better. Highly recommended.
I am relatively new to using pastels, but wanted to try pastel pencils, for the improved detail that pastel pencils were capable of providing. After watching numerous YouTube videos describing the Caran d'Ache brand as the best for pastel pencils, I didn't hesitate to order my own set.I ordered a 12 piece Caran d'Ache set and couldn't wait to give them a try. In the attached hummingbird painting, the hummingbird is exclusively created with Caran d'Ache Pastel Pencils. The wisteria and background were created with Rembrandt Soft Pastels. (The original design was an acrylic painting by Cinnamon Cooney, The Art Sherpa, LLC))I love my Caran d'Ache Pastel Pencils and I have already ordered the 40 Set, and a number of additional colors to round out my growing collection.
The pastel pencils are incredibly soft and blendable. The pigment is also wonderful. Having tried multiple different brands, these are the least gritty pencills and most like soft pastels. This does make them more delicate and difficult to sharpen to a finer point. On a few pencils the cedar casing has had internal defects that make sharpening a bit more challenging. But it is a worthwhile tradeoff for me. I hesitate to say these are 'overpriced' because they are such high quality and i wouldn't say they aren't worth it. But they are expensive compared to other quality brands.
I have various ranges of Soft Pastel Pencils from many of the top manufacturers. However much I like them all, none of them come anywhere near close to the Caran d'Ache. They are quite simply the ultimate option. The pigments are made from the purest and best sources and it's very easy to see upon using them. The vibrant opaque colours, that blend so easily and require much less application to cover your chosen area than other options available. I have written many reviews, I really enjoy the pastel pencils they are great. They could be a tinge more firm so that they travel better. Blick's has been nothing but the best with customer service. If you have a product problem take a photo, sometimes it is a factory issue such as side splitting of the lead instead of across or on the bias. If it was a stick pastel I break them anyways but Thank you for kindly replacing at your cost and that is why Blick's is the best art supply company that I have ever dealt with.
This is one beautiful set of pastel pencils. They apply like butter and I am thrilled with the color intensity too. My first piece with them was on sanded paper and I was surprised at how little dust was actually created. I love everything CaranD'Ache makes.
Sampled a variety of pastel pencils recently, and tried them all side by side (Conte, Cretacolor, Caran d'ache, Faber Castell, Stabilo, Derwent), blending each together with charcoal and white pastel on the same brand/tooth of art paper for careful comparison. I expected a lot from Caran d'Ache for the price, which is considerably higher than other brands. While the saturation and richness were top notch, I found Caran d'Ache to be the only brand I tried that would not satisfactorily blend with black and white charcoal. Whereas pastel pencils usually have a relatively charcoal-like quality and texture, the Caran d'Ache are much more like oil pastels encased in wood. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with this, but it makes them very buttery and "wet," and for my particular usage, in which blending together with non-Caran d'Ache blacks, whites, and other colors/brands is paramount, this was actually the only brand that was flat-out unusable. I'm very glad I tried an individual pencil first.I do find Caran d'Ache's quality to generally be above average in most cases, if excessively priced, but just be aware of the fact that their pastel pencils have a very different kind of consistency than competing brands, and they don't play well together.
