Got my jacket. It's just ok. Not great. Sleeves are too long, but I like it well enough.Bring back the old Carhartt! All the best models and designs have been discontinued, why?It seems Carhartt is soon the go the way of Jansport, Northface, Timberland, and so many others. Producing cheap copies of their own products in Asia, seduced by the chance to make quick, easy money now that the brand is fashionable. Ironically it will be the workers who will probably be the first to abandon the brand, ironic because it was actually they who helped build it in the first place. You'd think that there'd be more effort made to deliver a quality product to the people who've been relying on your brand for the past 40 years.

I've worn Carhartt products for over 40 years and they are hard to beat. I've always had a classic Detroit jacket but found it increasingly hard to replace them with the exact same one. This new Detroit jacket is definitely a different cut from the old one. I have a 42-43" chest but knew from past experience that a medium would fit perfectly. The insulation feels warmer and softer than the old style. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase. Hopefully it will wear as well as the older Carhartt attire did. It's getting increasingly harder to find decent quality work and leisure wear , I still think Carhartt is your best bet.

Please bring back the original J01/J001/J97 design. This is not a Detroit jacket. The quality of this jacket is nowhere near the quality of the original. If I were Carhartt, I would be ashamed to call this a Detroit. The canvas is far thinner and less durable, the jacket is not tapered at the waist, the pocket zipper gets stuck and is difficult to use while wearing gloves, the barrel cuffs at the wrist fasten differently than the original, the arms are now tapered, the quilted lining is filmsy and tacky and, it is not lined throughout the inside of the arms, the collar is no longer stiff and sharp, and the color of the jacket is more red than Carhartt brown. What is more iconic than the original Detroit jacket? When you think of Carhartt, you think of clothing that will stand the test of time, made with quality, durability, and affordability in mind; this is exactly what the original Detroit was all about. For decades this jacket has been the poster child of Carhartt; and for good reason. Now, this jacket lacks everything that I loved in the original; it is not durable, the quality is cheap, it does not look good, and somehow this it is more expensive than the original.I'm not sure the reasonings for this overhaul; all I know is, why fix something that isn't broke?

I bought this bec. I was curious. I also owned the current detroit jacket model. If you're undecided between the two the current detroit jacket is a bit thicker. It's more bulkier. The re-imagined is thinner like a trucker jacket. This is more for everyday jacket. For going out. It is slimmer fit. Overall body length is short with long sleeves. I had to adjust the cuffs since it's a bit big too. The detroit jacket no need to adjust cuff.If you're a big guy or have a stomach get the current detroit jacket. If you are slim, get the re-imagined version. For the price and design, personally I prefer the current detroit jacket over this.
I'll start off by saying that this is a great looking jacket (already received some compliments) and it definitely keeps me warm while working outdoors at night. The only thing I'm on the fence about is the sizing. I'm 6'0", 200lbs and ordered a large. I don't know if it's just me, but the sleeves do seem a little longer than normal (I have long arms so this didn't really effect me) and the jacket itself is almost too short. It's right on the cusp of being too short, which makes me worry about throwing it in the washer because I feel it will shrink. Not sure if this is normal Carhartt sizing since I've never owned one of their jackets before. The sleeves would've definitely been too long if I had ordered an XL. What is Carhartt thinking these days? What happened to the great (and comfortable) coats & jackets that they once manufactured? Unfortunately, this is the second most, "ill-fitting" garment, that I have ever tried on. While wearing only a thin tee-shirt, this jacket was obviously way too tight and binding through the chest, as well as in the upper arm area. Why are the sleeves, now so skinny? And this was supposed to be a "relaxed fit". Oh well, you can forget layering, and on top of that, those sleeves were about 4 inches too long. The jacket was a "large", while the size chart recommended that I needed a "medium"(?), so what am I to do? Only my finger tips were exposed in the large size. But putting all this aside, this was just an "ill-fitting" garment. The way ... MoreWhat is Carhartt thinking these days? Only my finger tips were exposed in the large size. But putting all this aside, this was just an "ill-fitting" garment. The way it was cut is nothing at all like the good old stuff from years ago. Actually been wearing Carhartt jackets for 50+ years. Are today's people shaped so differently, than they were back when stuff actually fitted, and most of all, was comfortable? I just don't understand. Why take great garments and "cheeeeep" them up.Oh, and I mentioned that this was the second most ill-fitting garment I have ever put on. Well, the other most ill-fitting garment that I have put on, was another style of Carhartt jacket, which I ordered and tried about 6-7 months ago (all the same problems). Both have now been returned and I think I am done with Carhartt. What a disappointment this company has become, and I really, now cherish all of my old Carhartt's, holes and all. They were made for people. I'm not sure who today's stuff is being made for, or made by. Does anyone at Carhartt ever try to wear, or at least try on, any of this new stuff ?
I got this jacket because I was looking for a quality jacket that will last me a while and that I can wear for many month out of the year. It's a great jacket that is warm enough on its own for the fall but can be layered to be worn in the winter months. It fits slim enough where it's not in the way, while still allowing enough room for a heavyweight hoodie. Despite the trim fit mobility is not a problem at all, and once broken in it's even easier to move around. I'm about 6'2 210lbs and got a size large and it fits great. I'd still try one on if you can. Somewhat disappointed in the QC as I received the jacket with a hole in the left pocket. However due to the design the pocket is still usable, just a little disappointing that a company known for their quality had ... MoreI got this jacket because I was looking for a quality jacket that will last me a while and that I can wear for many month out of the year. Still love the jacket and other than the pocket issue it's perfectly fine. Would highly recommend.
I am a big Carhartt fan and have a few old Detroit jackets. I tried a new one from a local place but I am not a fan. Adding a drop tail hem and removing the back waist-adjustment snaps and the old-style cuffs was a big mistake, and I will be returning the jacket. I tried a few sizes, and even when sized down the jacket is now too long to fit over a tool belt because of the lengthened back hem. Likewise, I miss the waist adjustment because it let me tailor the jacket to whatever underlayer I had on, be it a flannel shirt or a thicker sweatshirt. If I had my way, Carhartt should just return to making the original Detroit jacket (J01 or J001) instead of putting out a new model with changes that no one asked for.If I want a long jacket to cover my waist I can get a ... MoreI am a big Carhartt fan and have a few old Detroit jackets. What made the Detroit great was that it fit over a belt and didn't ride up while driving a truck or tractor and was warmer than a denim jacket. That being said, I think the quality is still good. Having compared both, materials seem mostly unchanged from my old jackets. I also don't really care where it is made, just what it looks like and how it fits. At this point I think I will probably get either an old Detroit jacket off of eBay or a blanket/sherpa lined denim jacket as a replacement so I can keep my old ones nice. Please reconsider the purpose of this jacket in the Carhartt lineup, and whether the new model's changes were really warranted. I kindly ask that the old Detroit jacket be brought back for working people like me. Thanks.
I can’t understate how disappointed I am with the redesign of the Detroit jacket. I’ve owned three over the past 25 years, and my teenage son has been wearing second hand youth versions since he was four years old (currently on his fourth). I intended on purchasing myself a new Detroit jacket this year, but after inspecting the new design, I hung it back on the rack and left the store. The new fleece lining is nothing like the original blanket lining that felt like a cotton-wool blend. I don’t care for fleece, and just loved the rugged feeling of the original. I have an athletic build, with larger chest and shoulders and slimmer waist. The previous cut, with it’s adjustable waist straps, allowed me to cinch the wast to accommodate my tapered body style. I have an athletic build, with larger chest and shoulders and slimmer waist. The previous cut, with it’s adjustable waist straps, allowed me to cinch the wast to accommodate my tapered body style. And above all else, I don’t understand the dropped back waistline. It’s been referred to as a butt flap, and I agree with that assessment. The straight cut was the defining quality of the Detroit jacket in my opinion. This flap was the deciding factor when I put the jacket back on the rack. I hated how it looked and felt when I tried it on. I hope there is a reconsideration in the design for next year. My wife, son, and I own extreme parkas, chore coats, regular and Sherpa lined vests, overalls, flannels, hoodies, t-shirts, etc. This is a Carhartt family in a harsh winter area of mid-Michigan. And my Detroit jackets have always been my Crown Jewels - my favorite pieces that I take comfort in dawning each year when the weather turns cold, and what I wear daily for errands and tasks throughout the winter. So I’m saddened to see a staple of my wardrobe basically discontinued. Discontinued because the new version is not worthy of the Detroit title in my opinion.
I have warn 3 of the Detroit Jackets for close to 25 years, gone through two of them with almost daily use Fall and Winter. I recently purchased my 4 Detroit jacket and am totally disappointed. The jacket from the photos looks the same although after close review there is a flap on the back of the jacket where in my others the jacket was straight back with snaps on both sides at the hips, which I did not notice in the pictures when I ordered it. The Brass Zipper and Snaps have now been replaced with another metal not the brass as used in the past. Jacket now made in Mexico instead of USA.
