Don't be put off by all the one-star reviews complaining about cars flying off the track. It happens at first all right, but you just need some patience to learn how to drive them properly - i.e. use the boost for the loop, slow down on the bends, etc., rather than just pressing down the button to go fast as possible all the time. Our seven-year-old had it mastered within 30 minutes of play and we've had several epic races since then. Would agree with another suggestion further down though, to not bother with the cardboard on outside of the track - it's purely decorative rather than functional, and really just flops around a bit. Removing it makes no difference whatsoever to play. Overall, a great toy, if you've just got the patience to take 30 minutes to learn how ... MoreDon't be put off by all the one-star reviews complaining about cars flying off the track. As another reviewer has said, once you learn the technique it's easy and so much fun.My 5 and 10 year were pro's by day 2. You adjust the speed accordingly, boost around the loop, then ease off around bends. It really is a great set. I grew up with a scalectrix, and we had same issues with cars flying off track due to bad driving!Love how it counts laps as you race. This was the favourite present, finally my two kids can play together! Looking forward to extending the track and adding new cars.

This isn't an instant gratification toy. You have to learn how to slow down for the bend, speed up for the loop, and slow down again for the next turn. Just like in a real F1 race there's a risk you'll lose out if you get it wrong. Children will go back and try it again until they get it right, but they need the right attitude from their driving coach. Keep persevering. When they can complete laps they'll have a new challenge to go for records. Or race each other. They'll learn the value of practice, hand eye coordination, concentration, and the basic fundamentals of motor racing. My 3 year old nephew (Mario) is getting past the loop now with his mother (Luigi) learning fast as well! I know he'll play this for years. I was delighted with the quality of the track for the price, the electrical connections are solid and come with spares. The crash barriers aren't functional so best to get rid for me since there's a baby around and that's where the small pieces are. For the price a track of this quality along with official Nintendo branding is a pretty great deal.

Bought as an Christmas present for 8yr old boy. Worked for about 30mins and then the outside lane became faulty. Lane was permanently powered even without any controllers attached rendering it unusable. Very disappointing considering the cost of the item. Have to go through the hassle of taking it back now.
This was a Christmas present for my 8 year old son. Essentially it is a well made toy and the loop-the-loop is a great element of the track, except to say that it can be quite tricky to master (especially for younger children) so I can imagine that little ones will give up quickly. The track needs to be longer after the loop-the-loop to allow for the cars to slow down before the next bend. The only other thing that would have made it better would possibly be to have the option of Mario Kart soundtracks that could play in the background whilst racing. Other than that, it's a quality product and I can see that children would love to collect more characters to make it more interesting. Christmas present for my seven year old this year. Great product. All the family have had lots of fun with it. You have to keep an eye on the brushes under the cars and keep them right, and there is a knack to mastering the loop-d-loop but hours of fun to be had. The track can be configured three ways to help get the hang of it. Lap records being broken daily.
My son bought this set with his Christmas and pocket money and he loves it. The track quality is great and so are the cars.Great that it comes with a power supply and not batteries like cheaper, non branded names. The build quality is typical Carrera just as I remember it.As for all the poor reviews……this is how slot cars work, you have to use the throttle control correctly in order to keep them from coming off the track, learn hand/eye coordination and it works.
The cars have three settings; 1. Too slow and gets stuck. 2. Too fast and flies straight off in two seconds. 3. Doesn’t move at all because the connection to the track is so poor.Corner barriers are flimsy bits of paper and the plastic connectors for these and have no logic around how or where to fix to the track and are just as useless as the cars themselves. This product is a complete waste of time, money and effort. Will be taking straight back for a refund… if we can find the receipt!!
Bought as a Christmas present for a 5.5 year old, and out of the box it was great, once you get the hang of controlling your speed and boost button. Hours of fun. One happy boy (and Dad!). 2 days later, one side of the track worked at full speed regardles of whether the controller was pressed, or even plugged in. Returned to Smyths in store for full refund without issue. As there were non left in store, ordered another online which arrived the next day. Within minutes of setting up, one controller stopped working altogether (only the boost button worked), so was unuseable. This 2nd set is now going back for a full refund, but wont be bothering again. Shame - would be great if reliable. Hence 1* rating
this is a very expensive toy for the fact that after approx 4 hours of racing time the cars are already sticking. also the turbo needed on the loops results in the car coming off the track on the straight. a little disappointed with item for the money
