I expected to love this...

First of all, I never write reviews but felt compelled to write one today. I had never worked with this yarn before nor had I ever worked with a so-called superwash, but I expected to love it! All of the reviews are GREAT. And who doesn't love the generous 220 yardage? When the yarn arrived (as always, in speedy, record time BTW - Thank you WEBS) the "heathered" color, "Lichen" was the exact color green that I was looking for! I wove a very large shawl from it and it was gorgeous on and off the loom; lovely to weave, a beautiful drape. I wanted to add some special beading to the twisted fringe so I did so before wet finishing; something I always do when using beads. I wanted to add some special beading to the twisted fringe so I did so before wet finishing; something I always do when using beads. Since it was a superwash, I decided to wet finish in the washer on SHORT COOL/GENTLE cycle and planned to air dry it lying flat. Except for 100% cotton towels, I always wet finish by hand but thought that it being superwash, this time I'd do it in the washer with a little Eucalan. Thought it would be... fine. It wasn't. I removed it from the washer and oohed and awed over how deliciously soft it had become. That's a point in its favor. Then I saw all of the extreme shedding! Excess fuzz clung to every surface of the shawl. I had given it a little shake and piles of damp clumps landed all over me, all over the floor, in the air...All of the ends of the fringe had exploded into a poofy mess. No choice now but to put it in the dryer on the lowest setting in the hope that all of this FUZZ would end up in the lint catcher instead of all over the house. I took it out while still a little bit damp, where it is air-drying as I speak. Not sure if it was some kind of colossal mistake on my part by wet finishing in the washer, or if this is a random quality control issue or what. Not quite certain the shawl is even salvageable except for rescuing the beads. The texture of it is almost felted and strange. Bottom line : based on my experience with it, I would be VERY afraid to try this yarn again despite other great reviews. Meanwhile, I highly recommend WEBS. Always great to deal with and purchase from.

I chose this yarn, Cascade 220 Superwash, in several colors for my first project for a class in Fairisle , an Inca Hat by Cabin Fever, wherein I learned corrugated ribbing and Armenian knitting. I wanted wool that would be soft on the skin, easy to work with and have a lot of contrasting colors available from which to choose. I'm happy to report that Cascade 220 Superwash fit all my requirements and the resulting hat is now being well worn by its recipient! ( Note: I made a few modifications to the designs on the original pattern and opted not to add the tassels, per request of the recipient)

I will favor Cloudborn 220 over other yarns

I am a fan of Cloudborn yarns. Because the yarn is a loose twist, it blooms beautifully, but can also pill during work and later wash/soak. I always treat hand knits like feltable fibers, regardless of content, so I can not speak to "wash and wear".The weight sport weight of the 220 is closer to light worsted. I can often combine mist sports with fingerings in colorwork, but with the 220 I find them combining better with dk weight. This can also vary by color (I've seen this in other brands as well). It's one reason why I swatch everything, and after blocked gauging, will experiment with the swatch (washing, steeking, etc). After blocking, I will risk superwash yarns with a drier sheet and lowest heat setting for 10 min in the dryer (feltables go on the no heat ... MoreI am a fan of Cloudborn yarns. This tends to "soften" or mist fine detailed color work. It washes nicely with standard wool soak and block practices. After blocked and air dried, I fluff with a good quality drier sheet on low/ no heat for 10 minutes. The yarn blooms beautifully.

I would buy again - but beware
17 March 2023

The yarn is lovely. I was pretty disappointed when I bough a bunch of pigeon heather yarn for a specific pattern, which was indicated to be DK weight, but when it came it was Aran weight instead. I had to click a different pattern to compensate for the lower weight, and then I didn't have enough yarn for the new pattern. So I ordered a complementary color - in the same dye "family," the heathers line, copper heather - and when it came it WAS DK weight. I double-checked both yarns on the website and nowhere on those two listings did it indicate that one would be a different weight. It was pretty frustrating. I rolled with the punches and the resulting baby blanket is beautiful, but the yarn stressed me out, man.

Review of Cascade 220 Superwash
25 June 2024

I am finding Cascade 220 Superwash easy, smooth and comfortable to knit with. It feels quite soft to the touch. It gives really good definition to the knitted pattern design I am using. The ball size is good for children's knitwear. I would certainly buy again. It would be useful to have a bigger size ball for knitting adult sizes or blankets etc. reducing the number of joins needed. Why only 4 stars? Generally the yarn is soft and smooth, but every now and then I come across a small thicker area of yarn which shows up when knitted. Sometimes it's just 'fluff' on the yarn which can be carefully removed; occasionally it shows as a thicker stitch when knitted.Sorry I can't comment on the 'superwash' aspect as I'm still knitting.

Squishy Superwash
7 March 2021

This yarn is beautiful, soft, and pretty darn squishy for super wash. I bought it to do an intricate cable pattern sweater for my husband, and I wish it was a bit heartier. It would be lovely in a cable sweater for babies or other things like hats. I'll buy it again for other uses. And I've decided to keep going with the sweater. But I think there may have been other choices for the type of wear my DH will put this through. It's not splitting or pilling at all, but it seems to get sort of soft and just the tiniest bit fuzzy around the cable crosses, which loses some of the cable definition, especially with the dark color. Also it's much less heathered and is darker than the photo, which I liked. Thanks for helping me knit from stash!
19 January 2023

I recently started a sweater with some yarn from stash and found I was probably going to be short 1 skein. After having a similar problem a year ago and not being able to find that extra skein, I decided to look for one before I got too far into my sweater. Off to Webs (online) and I was happy to see that they had just what I needed. So I bought one skein. Although it cost me dearly, $17 including the shipping, I felt it was worth it to continue with the sweater and not have to worry about running out of yarn. Now of course the color dye lot isn't the same and my eye could tell the difference, but I'll use it on the sleeves and hope it's not too noticeable. Thanks for being there, Webs!
