Catan Expansion Pirates and Explorers
Published in 2013, this Catan expansion is entirely dedicated to exploration! Sent out by the Council of Catan, you set out for uncharted areas to build new outposts. Game plays ok. Adds something to the base game if that's what you are use to. The titles are mostly predetermined though, so building your own layout is difficult. The exploration part of the game is definitely the highlight (which begs the question as to if just getting sea fears would be a better idea) and pirates, fishing and spice adds to figuring out what strategy best suits your play.Unfortunately this box left a bad taste in my mouth as to the quality of the game. Every part of the game (coins, titles, etc) were all printed way offset, and border pieces don't fit well together.. waiting for a replacement possibly, but made me feel the company is just throwing these together without care of quality just to milk us for more money. Box has no inserts to pack ... MoreGame plays ok. Adds something to the base game if that's what you are use to. The titles are mostly predetermined though, so building your own layout is difficult. The game itself is fun....however, they do not fit well together with the original catan game. Also, when first taking apart the pieces from the box, the carboard rips off easily. Quality is known to be a problem which is disappointing for the price you pay for the game....

Just played the beginners version but will expand to a more complex set up next time. Seems pretty good but no red to read the rules thoroughly again to ensure we are playing it correctly.

Had a blast playing this on the weekend, gives the base game far more options, more chances for each player to win in different ways, can't wait to play again. Cheers
If you play Catan, you will enjoy this game! This is the third expansion I've played and is my favorite expansion so far. I don't know if we were over thinking on our turns or what but the game took much longer then expected.. so when you start it, plan for it to take a few hours, seriously. The game suggests playing out each scenario, as you do this it layers on different components to the game, I highly suggest playing the first scenario as the game suggests, however, we were able to combine a couple of the others together to get to the final scenario much faster, saving us a good bit of time. I wish this was available on the digital Catan Universe platform!
Catan the best board game.! This is an excellent addition to the original game. We play this probably once or twice a month.
My family and I have played the original Catan for years, so we were familiar with the Catan world and excited to try Explorers and Pirates. It adds multiple new dimensions to the game and is a lot of fun. I have not tried other expansions yet, but would definitely recommend this one. Before purchasing, I did watch the embedded video review and found it very helpful and enlightening.
We are thoroughly enjoying this expansion pack. So far tried 4 of the 5 scenarios and they have been great. Each scenario adds a little more development to the game therefore building up your knoweldge of the game and the strategies required to win. Looking forward to our 5th scenario which is the full game.
Great expansion lots of fun must have for catan playersHere are some thoughts and tipsInitally upon un boxing I thought this expansion would be more than I could handle this was partly because I went straight to poping out the game peices and frame extensions willy nilly, guys there is unboxing instructions and these make set up so much easier and logicalAs for the game I recommend playing the scenarios in order atleast once they introduce the new elements and rules and reduce the amount of time you will spend reviewing the rulesThe piece quality was right up there and my only bad feed back was the fact I was to over zealous and didn't break out one piece carefully and ripped it a littleThere is so much going on in this expansion that you might forget your ... MoreGreat expansion lots of fun must have for catan playersHere are some thoughts and tipsInitally upon un boxing I thought this expansion would be more than I could handle this was partly because I went straight to poping out the game peices and frame extensions willy nilly, guys there is unboxing instructions and these make set up so much easier and logicalAs for the game I recommend playing the scenarios in order atleast once they introduce the new elements and rules and reduce the amount of time you will spend reviewing the rulesThe piece quality was right up there and my only bad feed back was the fact I was to over zealous and didn't break out one piece carefully and ripped it a littleThere is so much going on in this expansion that you might forget your even playing to a points target
Our family LOVES Catan. We have every version now. This version offers multiple ways to play. It is much longer than some of the other versions. I recommend you learn each play option in order. It will help you understand it better. It progressively gets more complicated.
