Terrific little grills, a bit more forgiving than the kettles and the size makes storing it less of a hassle. Your gonna have a few whoopsies chasing your temps first few runs but Once you’ve got it dialed in you’ll wonder why you didn’t get one earlier. The built in thermometer is a bit wild making meat probes and a digital one for ambient temp a must. Loves gidgee charcoal.

This little smoker/grill is well beyond my expectations. I'm a first time kamado style griller so I didn't want a heavy investment with no experience. This was very easy to learn and still do a decent job with the food. I comes up to temperature quickly, holds the desired temperature MUCH longer than I expected, and does a fantastic job. My first couple of attempts were a bit overdone but a $20 investment in a four probe digital thermometer from Walmart solved that. Now I can watch grill internal temp and all meat temps to the "nth". (thermometer supplied with grill was WAY off) I didn't expect grill thermometer to be real accurate but I really didn't expect it to be off as far as it was. No big deal because I like this digital with four probes much better. Very ... MoreThis little smoker/grill is well beyond my expectations. I am very pleased for with the quality of the build and the results I have been getting from my Akron jr. I was concerned about it’s small size however it has yet to be an issue. I spent a few evenings practicing heating this up and playing with the vents to adjust the temperature before attempting to cook anything and so far I have cooked three great meals on it. Buying the stone heat deflector is a must.

Great for camping and tailgating
21 February 2018

I had already gotten a full sized Akorn, but it's a bit unwieldy (though doable) to take along when camping or tailgating, so felt this would be perfect for that use. It is, with some obvious limitations due to the size. The size is fine for most normal grilling or for beer can chicken/cornish hens, but for larger stuff it's a little small. It can smoke a smaller pork butt, but it's a little too small for a brisket or a larger pork shoulder, and obviously you're not going to fit a turkey in it. If it had the upper grate, a smaller brisket could be cut in half and done using both grates, but it doesn't come with one (though the grill grate has provisions for it). Also, for larger gatherings you're not going to fit the food on all at once, but for my family of 4 it's ... MoreI had already gotten a full sized Akorn, but it's a bit unwieldy (though doable) to take along when camping or tailgating, so felt this would be perfect for that use. Also, for larger gatherings you're not going to fit the food on all at once, but for my family of 4 it's perfectly adequate for most things, including personal pizzas. I knew this going in and it's obviously a junior for a reason, but keep it in mind that if you're cooking for more than 4-6 people, everything won't be ready at the same time as you'll have to cook in batches. Your best bet if cooking for more than that is to cook larger meats (like pork loin or london broil) and then slice it up at the end. The heat can also be a little more uneven than the full sized unit and can run out of charcoal on longer cooks as it doesn't hold as much. Overall not a big deal and not really possible to improve on given the size/weight of it. Easily beats any other grill of similar size that I've used and very easy to transport with the included handles. Perfect for it's intended use.

I love this grill!

First, the negative. I expected a stand up grill. This thing is actually a tabletop grill.Next, the high praise. it is heavy! It's enamel coated on the outside, porcelain coated on the inside. This thing is not going to rust! After a very easy assembly process, I seasoned the cast iron cooking grate according to the instructions in the manual. After an hour, the grill was the perfect temp for bratwurst. I added the same amount of charcoal that I had added to my old Weber grill with a comparable cooking surface. I now know I only need half of the usual amount of charcoal. This grill has 2 vents. it was very easy to maintain a steady temperature. The design maximizes natural air flow. This very well built grill will more than likely last us 50-somethings the rest ... MoreFirst, the negative. I expected a stand up grill. I highly recommend this smaller grill that seems to be a knockoff of the green egg grill. You won't be disappointed with the quality.

Love this little Kamado
14 June 2020

We grill/smoke at least weekly and when we lived in a larger house we had a Char-Griller with a side box for smoking. When we moved to this smaller place, we needed a smaller grill. Since my last Char-Griller was giving good serviced after a decade of use, I wanted to stay with the brand. I also wanted to see what Kamado grilling was all about and I couldn't pass up the Akorn Jr on Amazon because the price was fair. I liked the fact that the Akorn was all steel and I don't have to worry about breaking a ceramic grill. This little guy really does well with smoking and grilling. Maybe it's the Kamado, maybe it's Char-Griller's design, maybe it's my experience, but this grill cooks and flavors meat just right. NOT worth the cost

If you just want to grill a occasional burger or steak, go buy a 60 dollar charcoal grill and take care of it. If you want a grill to do more than that be prepared to shell out extra $ for the “accessories” you’ll need to do that and still not be sure it will do what is claimed. I purchased my Char Griller at a local store and it was assembled (incorrectly) instead of the wheels being on the side that opens, they were mounted facing the left and was slightly damaged because it was on the floor and the only one in stock. After I got it home and took it apart and re-assembled it, I got on line to check out some suggestions for use, specifically smoking, this grill as it comes “out of the box” is not able to smoke unless you buy additional accessories, the store that ... MoreIf you just want to grill a occasional burger or steak, go buy a 60 dollar charcoal grill and take care of it. So, “out of the box” this grill will do nothing more than a 60 dollar grill, I have thrown good money after bad and went on line and purchased the heat deflector, adjustable coal basket, and grill cover (over 100 additional dollars) and a steep freight cost, to hopefully be able to do the things it’s advertised as doing. Its been a week since ordering and still no “accessories” so I own a useless grill one day prior to Memorial. I guess my guests for my annual Memorial Day BBQ will get some fried burger and boiled hot dogs rather than my Pulled Pork and smoked brisket. Ive since had a chance to use it after the accessories arrived, the temp gauge is off by about 100 degrees, the built in one showed 225 and was actually running closer to 350

Set your expectations low and you'll never be disappointed. Let's be honest, this is the one I could afford. Get what you pay for, it's not terrible but it's far from great. If your intentions are to grill with charcoal then there's an infinite number or cheaper product alternatives. If your intentions are to impart smoke flavor into steak or tenderloin, then this is perfect for you. If your intention is to smoke meat or dry out peppers: there's an infinite number of better products. But this is the one I could afford so this is what I learned. It's too small to properly smoke.... anything, really. The only way I could keep the temp. under 250 Fahrenheit (which is still too hot) since the cubic volume is so small was to only use 6-7 bricks. It's too small to properly smoke.... anything, really. The only way I could keep the temp. under 250 Fahrenheit (which is still too hot) since the cubic volume is so small was to only use 6-7 bricks. Obviously the heat dissipated (and was never stable) very quickly and required manipulating the air flow every 10 minutes to keep them lit. It also required removing the meat/jalapeno/poblano and rack to access bottom chamber. Not ideal but not nightmarish either. It just makes it overly tedious. If you decide to use an appropriate (but still relatively small) amount of charcoal for the size allotted on the acorn jr. then your temp's will always be north of 250, and that's at the thermometer probe, which is a significant distance away from the rack. Thermometer broke immediately when I tried to sear ribs, anything north of 450 renders it useless indefinitely. Finger handle for the top smoke vent broke during second use leaving the metal tab exposed and the only means for regulating exhaust air flow, so now i have to use a mitt every.... single.... time.... Lastly, main lid handle sucks something fierce.

Okay little unit, but fit and finish is lacking.
6 February 2022

First of all, my unit arrived damaged (not necessarily the mfg's fault) with a large dent on the outer body. As if that weren't enough, the gasket on the bottom by the ash pan was hanging loose (it looks like it's held in by what look to be something like staples -- so not a great design). In addition. the top does not align with the latch. It's bolted on the back so very little wiggle room. So all in all, the fit an finish are average at best. I expected more in terms of quality control. Still, as a secondary unit for quick grilling it should be okay. We will see how it performs over time. Because it's so big and bulky I decided to keep it even with the big dent (at least it's on the back) and the gasket issue. It's a pain to pack up and return. This kamado is also small enough to put smoking chips in the Ashe catcher for extra smoke but I've never needed to as I've always achieved HECTIC smoke rings. I get compliments from everyone about best meat they've ever had, seriously this thing rocks when setup correctly.
