Chord Mojo Portable DAC & Headphone Amplifier

I initially bought the iFi nano iDSD amp/dac. But I was a little underwhelmed when paired with my Beyerdynamic DT1770 Pros. I felt perhaps a little short changed that I had to turn the volume up beyond half way to get any reasonable volume out of it, and to three-quarters to get some good volume. The DT1770s are 250ohm, so appreciate they are not the easiest to drive. The sound was good, but not great.That’s when I started looking elsewhere, and ended up with the Chord Mojo. It’s a great size, smaller than the iFi nano. Better build quality, and alot more enjoyable to use, those illuminated marble buttons, whilst possibly a bit of a gimmick, make it a joy to use!Ultimately though, the sound was better than the iFi nano. But the Mojo digs that little bit deeper in the lower frequencies; it’s not night and day, but it was enough for me to send back the iFi Nano and stump up an extra £100.It does run a little hot as reported, but that doesn’t bother me, and the battery is good enough for a day in the office listening at a reasonable volume.I would have expected at this price point a few additional features such as the option to fine tune the sound profile to suit different headphones and user preferences. Overall A happy Chord Mojo owner.

The Chord Mojo DAC makes my CD and Hi Res quality music files sound better than I've ever heard the music in my life. I use it as my main desktop DAC connecting into my stereo preamplifier/amp and speaker system. The Chord Mojo DAC was a huge upgrade over the Schiit Modius DAC I was previously using in every possible way--clarity of instruments/vocals, sound stage, dynamic range, layering of sounds. I think this is the best value (e.g. very high quality at lowest cost) DAC from the Chord Electronics lineup. One thing I highly recommend for users like me that want to keep the Chord Mojo perpetually plugged in to a power source is to disconnect the internal battery so it is not continually charging. One thing I highly recommend for users like me that want to keep the Chord Mojo perpetually plugged in to a power source is to disconnect the internal battery so it is not continually charging. It is easy to do, you just unscrew the 8 micro hex screws, carefully open up the case, disconnect the battery plug connector from the circuit board and then close everything back up. There are several Youtube videos demonstrating how to do this. My other recommendation is to make sure you learn how to set the output of the Chord Mojo to true "Line Out" voltage (light blue lights). I had to correspond with support personnel from Chord Electronics to get clear and easy instructions on how to do this.

Moreover, I was putting together a new 2-channel system and felt like the Mojo might be a nice fit in that system as an affordable stationary DAC.The Mojo isn't as portable as some of the very small headphone amps that are meant to slip into a pocket along side an iPhone, but it is very portable and the sound is a substantial improvement over an i Phone as well as the typical entry level headphone amps.In addition, the Mojo can make a great system DAC while it's charging.
