I recently purchased the black version while it was on sale. I have only owned super automatics in the past and wanted to try my hand with a semiautomatic. First off the machine is definitely well made and comes with a great tamper and portafilter. The unit is counter friendly and super compact. This unit deserves a quality grinder so spend an equal amount or more in case you upgrade later. Of course I would like a 58mm machine but then this unit would be much bigger. My only complaint, while the components included are fantastic the baskets are cheap Chinese crap with inconsistent holes. I don?t understand why they would include a tamper that looks like it came with a $3000 machine and $20 baskets. I have already ordered a IMS 18-22g basket and unfortunately it won?t fit in my existing portafilter because of the weird plastic piece at the bottom. So I have ordered a bottomless normacore portafilter. I believe this will solve some of inconsistent results I am getting occasionally. Let me say even with the subpar baskets, the flavor profiles I am getting blows away the same old shot I would get with my Saeco Incanto. Two programmable shots, a legit pressure gauge and some basic PID control will help you on your way to DIY as well as seasoned home ? baristas ?. I like having more control of my shots but I?m not interested in temperature surfing. After this unit I?m going to pass the Gaggia classic and Rancilio silva and go right into a prosumer machine. This machine is worth a try if you are willing to make a couple small upgrades. It is a great value and checks all my box?s as a new hobbyist.

A great entry level espresso machine.

After much research and watching YouTube video comparisons I settled on the Solis Perfecta Plus as my first espresso machine with an excellent price point. I could not be happier with my choice. It is small, compact, works well and the price was right. One of the key features I was looking for was a manometer to track pressure.I like the fact that the portafilter is not a naked filter as this avoids a big mess with channeling if you do not have the dosing, grind and compaction just right. As a beginner and using pre-ground espresso I am sure that is what I would have. Even with pre-ground coffee I am producing a very good espresso, but not quite what I taste at the local roasters. With using pre-ground espresso coffee I cannot get the shot dialed-in correctly. ... MoreAfter much research and watching YouTube video comparisons I settled on the Solis Perfecta Plus as my first espresso machine with an excellent price point. No parts availability for a machine that is going to break shortly before or shortly after the very short 12-month warranty expires.Do not buy this machine or you will regret it. It may look like a decent inexpensive option right now, and its features sound wonderful, but if it ends up in your garbage can in 6-18 months, it's way more expensive per year than if you choose a more expensive (now) but much better built, better engineered, better proven, and better supported machine.Kudos to SCG for shipping me a replacement machine for free (free shipping both directions on the 3rd one; I had to pay $80 to ship the original one back for initial warranty repair/replacement). And kudos to SCG for taking back the third one and giving me a store credit for all my hassle. Lack of kudos to them, though, for continuing to push this machine to this day and label it as a staff recommendation, even after the staff acknowledge that for nearly a year Solis hasn't supported the machine! They should instead drop it and sever ties with Solis, who has no business designing, making, and selling espresso machines when they do it this poorly.Don't say I didn't warn you.

Beautiful machine, fun to learn
30 January 2023

I had to send the first one back after receiving it and using it a few times. There was an issue with the thermal block. Customer service was really great and a new machine was sent out quickly. This is the first espresso machine I've ever owned and I had no experience, so for me the learning curve was fairly steep. After trying different grind sizes, playing around with amounts and tamping, I was unable to get consistent shots. I wasted a lot of coffee. Off to YouTube I went to learn about this art. It wasn't until I made some upgrades that I was able to find consistency. I purchased a precision basket, a bottomless portafilter, made myself a needle tool from a cork and some toothpicks, purchased a Matow distribution tool, and measured my beans on a scale I already ... MoreI had to send the first one back after receiving it and using it a few times. I thought, do I really need all this to make a good cup of coffee? The answer for me is yes. I'm very happy with the Solis and would recommend. But these were my caveats.

The Solid Perfetta produces better tasting espresso than every local third wave coffee shop in the DMV. Maybe that says more about the baristas around here than the Solis, but this machine provides the feedback to dial in espresso that isn?t overly salty/sour (under extracted) or overly dry/bitter (over extracted). I actually sent back my first two machines because I could not get each one out of a certain mode, even after talking to SCG tech (rude and of no help). However, we have now had the Perfetta for 10 months and absolutely love it. I don?t like going to our local coffee roasters anymore because they can?t do with their $10k espresso machines what I can do with our $300 machine: make good espresso that isn?t sour and salty or bitter and dry.

Good dream, bad reality

First, let me say I have been buying from SCG for several years and will continue, given their range of products and very responsive customer service. It is hard for me to review this machine so severely because it is a little gem and raises hopes. I am of two minds because it is so seemingly well-designed but also so poorly realized. I bought one last December, loaned it to a friend who is a first-year law student living in a small apartment; as far as I know, it still works. Encouraged by that, the second one came at the end of January; it lasted only three months, cost around $100 to send back for warranty repairs, was instead replaced with an entirely new machine, portafilter, baskets, tamper, the whole works. The replacement is on the counter now, in use for a week. A friend ordered one which leaked (apparently a well-known problem) pools of water under the base after just a week or so. Disgusted, he repackaged the machine, let it sit in his basement until I visited three months ago. I have it now and may open it up to see if home repair is possible. Unless I move to Redmond, no other choice makes sense.Other comments on this site show the machine fails quite a lot. That my experience so far is two failures out of three suggests that it possibly isn?t that well designed or that it is badly built, or a little of both. Marketing this as a Swiss product is misleading; it is built in the P.R.C. (China). My guess is that Solis wanted to compete at a certain price point, that their design team came up with an interface that does so much in such a small space and carries so many nice features. Imagine their frustration to learn that marketing and sales would have the machine built in China to meet the target price. Perhaps there was a debate about moving the build to Switzerland or Germany, which would have cost more but made for a much more reliable product. All these leaks and reported failures mean that the internals, down to the gaskets, have been pulled from the bottom of the drawer, just meeting the lowest standard for use. Quality assurance may have tested the machines minimally before release.Don?t put too much pressure on this machine, literally. It is overly sensitive to seemingly small changes. I just switched coffee beans, different roaster, different roast, but with the same grind. Where formerly the pressure gauge slopped down steadily from 10 to 6 and even 4 bars over a few days, now the gauge shows 14+ and the dreaded double-flashing middle lights start up. My advice is to stop right away; I waited a second or so and saw drops of water coming from the steam wand. I think excess strain on the weak internals may be why these things fail. The last thing: all comments should require a field for how many days/hours/cups/whatever the machine has been in use. Five stars for one month isn?t as good as five stars for much longer. If the mean time to failure is even a year (the warranty), that is much too short. Unless you live within driving distance to the Lynnwood repair shop, I cannot recommend this machine. If the one now on my counter lasts another year, I will upgrade to more than one star.

A few notes on this machine, which, ultimately, I decided not to keep.I was looking for a thermo-block kind of machine for a short waiting time and an overall small machine. The price (on sale) seemed very good, too.I love the looks of the machine, since it matches very well with my coffee grinder, an Anfim House Self (see picture). The reason for me not to keep it was the temperature of the coffee. It is too cold for my taste. I noticed that even after a longer "on" time (can be programmed before machine goes to standby), the brew-head and portafilter were still cold - or, say, room temperature. Since the temperature for the espresso is important to me, I gave it only two stars. If one prepares e.g. Cappuccinos, the coffee temperature may not be so ... MoreA few notes on this machine, which, ultimately, I decided not to keep.I was looking for a thermo-block kind of machine for a short waiting time and an overall small machine. Since the temperature for the espresso is important to me, I gave it only two stars. If one prepares e.g. Cappuccinos, the coffee temperature may not be so important. The portafilter itself is pretty heavy and while this seems to be generally regarded as a positive feature, I am not so sure it is when one is looking for a fast heat-up time. (My old Quickmill e.g. has a very light weight portafilter on purpose to reduce warm-up time). A few empty/water shots would have mitigated the problem somewhat, but even then, after, say 30 or 40min, the filter would be back to room-temperature. The end the handle of the portafilter felt quite cheap compared to the overall quality.Switching the baskets in the portafilter was quite difficult. The basket sits very tide in place... maybe that would have loosened over time!?The power cord is quite short. The manufacturer is aware of this, since they say in the user-manual that the reason for the short length is to "reduce risk of entanglement / tripping". They make a short power cord a feature, rather than a cost-saving :-).Another curiosity in the user-manual: "Pull the plug after every use". (Maybe all my appliances say that and I never knew since I did not read these manuals :-) ).I am in the process of deciding for another machine, but have not come to a conclusion.

Solis: Buyer Beware
14 October 2022

I've used the Solis Barista Perfetta Espresso Machine every day for 10 months. This morning, I threw it in the garbage. It had been leaking for a while from the bottom of the machine. I thought that maybe my machine was a faulty one-off, but other users have actually posted videos of this problem online. So, I have to assume it's a manufacturing issue. I also endured constant spraying while pulling shots. At first, I thought I was packing my shots wrong, causing channeling, but over the course of nearly a year I fine tuned every aspect of my packing method and still had horrible spraying in every direction. The machine even sprayed water all over the kitchen when I would flush the brew head without a portafilter, so I believe this was another design flaw. The machine even sprayed water all over the kitchen when I would flush the brew head without a portafilter, so I believe this was another design flaw. Note: I use a bottomless portafilter; maybe this machine just isn't able to deal with one. The Solis is also incredibly loud and vibrates like crazy. Despite thorough cleaning every time the machine prompted me to do so, and constant use of a good water filter, the quality of my shots really declined over the course of months. Eventually, I was suffering through sour shots, even though I was using the same good beans from SCG, freshly ground at brewing. Anyway, just I set up my new Gaggia Classic Pro and pulled a perfect shot on my third try. No spraying, no leaking, less noise. I kind of miss the manometer, but whatever. Solis buyers: beware. I think this machine could have been great, but was maybe rushed to market. It definitely needs design and/or QC improvements.

Strongly recommend avoiding this one

Beware of a machine that focuses your attention on how good the tamper is and one that is deeply discounted after a few months in-market.The good news: The machine makes a decent espresso. Holds pressure well through the pour. The bad news abounds. This is poorly designed and even worse-engineered machine. Here goes:- after 6 mos. use, the thin portafilter basket disengages from the portafilter arm during the pour and sticks to the brew head. Most times I have to pry it off with a butter knife (the brew head is clean)- even worse, after 6 mos of use, the brew head leaks water after 10-15 secs into the pour- the drip tray runs right to the edge of the machine with no moat, so excess water is as likely to run OFF the tray as it is into it.- water filter ... MoreBeware of a machine that focuses your attention on how good the tamper is and one that is deeply discounted after a few months in-market.The good news: The machine makes a decent espresso. I posted a review after purchase under the purchase email but, apparently, you can only place one review, so you can't leave on after you've really come to know the machine

amazing value at the sale price

This is a good looking machine with good functionality (generous drip tray) and ease of use compared to other narrow 6" wide machines. The pre-infusion mode and PID make this a standout value, but also resulted in really good tasting shots with crema from the very first. Reviews suggested the programming is tricky since there's no screen and you have to use the top buttons, but it's easy if you use the manual so keep it handy till you're set up. The steam wand is the traditional commercial pin-hole style wand for developing microfoam which is an advantage at this price point where you usually see a panarello wand. The excellent quality of the accessories with surprise you--stainless steel portafilter feels like good quality and the steel/ aluminum tamper means you ... MoreThis is a good looking machine with good functionality (generous drip tray) and ease of use compared to other narrow 6" wide machines. The excellent quality of the accessories with surprise you--stainless steel portafilter feels like good quality and the steel/ aluminum tamper means you won't be in any hurry to upgrade anything, except many will want to add a bottomless portafilter. The only concern I could find is plastic lugs in the group head that hold the portafilter. In such a well-designed machine one assumes they've done the testing to know if these will hold up, but it makes you feel you need to be careful as you use the portafilter, back and forth in and out of the machine.
