I have owned a pestle and mortar for many years, one of those shallow ceramic ones, I think I bought it after seeing Nigel Slater using one, I hate it, used it twice then stuck it in the back of the cupboard where I believe it remains to this day, why? Because it didn't have the heft or rough surface to grind seeds to a powder or the weight to reduce garlic and basil to a paste.This serious piece of kit is the polar opposite, impressively big, solid and weighty with sides so high you can give things a real bash without fear of them escaping and just enough texture on the inside to hold things in place whilst you reduce them to a satisfying mush.So far I have knocked up a batch of Thai curry paste, and two lots of pesto which took no time at all, and way more ... Bought this for a friend as Christmas gift and he loves it. Its really heavy and he uses it quite a lot. Loves to make fresh pesto in it as well as other things.Great piece of kitchen equipment.

This large p&m combination is certainly weighty and makes grinding spices easier and quicker than using a smaller set. Bought for an Italian chef, its size was chosen for crushing larger things like leaves and garlic. It's a lot bigger than the one I bought in my youth, but if I can rearrange my cupboard I'll buy one for myself.
after receiving my Pestle & Mortar, i have used everyday, to grind down fresh herbs to use in my cooking, so much better than trying to chop or cut, i find it keeps my herbs all in one place with no mess over my kitchen worktops. It is very easily cleaned, heavy so it doesn't move about all over the place. Really pleased with this product. Its even a good looking kitchen ornament when not in use. Visitors have remarked on its eye catching look. I wouldn't like to think id be without this very useful kitchen implement now. An excellent all rounder for my kitchen, definately no negatives.

I’ve always wanted a pestle and mortar but never bought one, but now that we’ve had a kitchen makeover it makes sense to have this black granite pestle & mortar on the side in the kitchen. It’s certainly a talking point!I used this last Saturday when we had friends over for dinner and I needed to create seasoning for one of the chicken dishes I cooked.I’m really pleased with it. It works well with both wet and dry ingredients. I prefer it to faffing around chopping up ingredients.I like the design and look of it. The black granite is beautiful to look at. I can’t stop looking at it!
I bought this as a gift for my brother two Christmases ago. About 6 months later the pestle snapped near the end. Cole & Masón promptly provided a replacement only for that to break again after another few months. It’s a shame because the mortar is a good size and style but definitely not worth the high price tag.
Got this a couple of years ago to make Thai curry pastes with, can't have used it more than a handfull of times and the pestle has snapped at the neck. Happened whilst grinding roasted chillis, you'd have thought from the heft of the product it would be pretty sturdy but it appears not. Has never been dropped or used for anything other than it's intended purpose spent almost it's entire life undisturbed, sat in a drawer. Pretty disappointed with the quality. As I said it's super heavy and you'd expect it to be durable, alas no. Mortar hasn't shattered yet so that's a plus.
I purchased this pestle and mortar duo for my mother as part of her Christmas ensemble. I wanted a heavy one, as I know these tend to be the easiest to control and produce the best results. This 'Cole & Mason' pestle and mortar is absolutely fantastic, it is dense and heavy, easy to control, and seems very well designed. Both parts are ground from solid granite and it feels really high quality and of a premium nature when your using it. As you'd expect it grinds the various herbs/spices we have tested so far, and we are looking forward to using it more and more in the future.Overall, really good value!
