Almost the perfect 28L personal item travel bag

This bag is great for the size capacity!Without doing a testing of the actual volume, and just my actual packing of the bag with how i would typically travel this appears to be perfect for under seat personal item on most domestic US airlines, and even budget airlines internationally. That leads to one of a few main issues with it, however, because of the construction being 19x12x9. There is some give at the top 1/8th to 1/4th or so where you can fold it/compress it down if not fully packed out that would get you to place it in a sizing box and under a seat but i feel depending on how you do this to your bag this would compromise the back padding? And the waist strap had elastic band on them to roll them up but maybe add a spot to tuck these away or make them detachable? There should be some properly worked out compression/expansion system added to accommodate 1L or so of space. The laptop area definitely needs a dedicated gartered/zipped laptop charger compartment sleeve at the top, and there should be more of a false bottoms for the laptop, as I've been using the included rain cover as a bottoms protector of sorts lol.The include rain cover and zipper compartment is nice but I'd use that to store as a quick key wallet phone (if small enough) and/or passport book pocket when going through tsa and security. Also expandable side water bottle or tripod or umbrella holder would be a nice addition. But other that those few things, its an overall great travel personal bag! Would recommend.

I got this bag for travel, for flights and roadtrips. As soon as I opened it I thought I’d be returning it because it looked way too small to carry anything really. But then I packed it with four days of clothes, just random bulky pieces and they all fit just fine with room for more. I put it on to see how it would feel to carry it on my back fully packed and with the waist clip it was just fine…very comfortable actually. It’s a beautiful bag, I chose the black del dia to make it a bit less colorful, though these bags are known for being colorful I just didn't want THAT much! So the black front was perfect to tone it down a bit. This bag has so many spaces to fit whatever it is you need. Carry it on your back or with any of the handles surrounding the bag. It’s a great bag. If I travel for longer stretches I’ll definitely get another of these in the bigger sizes they offer. Right now I’m limited to travel for up to 4 days at a time so I wanted the smallest bag possible for that. Bag feels super sturdy and I hope it stays that way!The one thing I would say is when fully packed there is one side of the bag that has two zip sections and is separated with material and when packed it’s hard to zipper the bag at that section because the material doesn’t stretch there and pulls the zipper in. I don’t know why that’s even a problem, when they made this bag they should have easily noticed that would be problematic unless you carefully pack that area and zip it and then open back up, move stuff around and zip it again, until it zips easily, otherwise that area will likely get ripped or the zipper will break.

The hip belt is too high to be of much use, but is easily tucked away and is really unnecessary for the size of the pack and weight. The should straps are comfortable and the chest strap is easily adjusted and works well. The pack balances close to the body and feels good to carry for long distances. The flaw with this bag is the main outside zipper. I purchased two of these bags and although one was a bit better than the other, both have zippers that stall in the same place about 3/4 up on the right side of the pack. There are multiple reviews noting the same problem so it appears to be a longstanding design issue.Beyond this one sticking place, the nature of the bag as a zip around, near rectangle makes the zipper a bit slow to come all the way around. This seems inherent in the clamshell design with no rigidity like a normal suitcase. The upside of the clamshell is the organization and visibility it provides for your stuff, so on the whole, I think it is a worthwhile compromise, but for anyone who really wants a smooth outside zipper, this is going to be frustrating. After multiple uses, it does smooth out a bit, but you have to learn how to work it, especially at the one sticking place. I have some concern about how this will play out long term, although I haven't seen any reviews citing actual failure of this zipper. Still, it is a bit annoying for a bag at this price point to have this be a question. That said, there is not another similar clamshell bag with interior organization in this size available, so if you want those attributes, then this is the bag to get.I'm glad I have 2 of them because they meet my needs for compact, organized carry on without needing packing cubes. If Cotopaxi could fix the zipper, add an outside water bottle pocket and make the hip belt fully removable, this would be an absolute home run.

I love Cotopaxi bags so much - my favorite brand, hands down!

I am so grateful for Cotopaxi's lifetime warranty. I had an older version of of Allpa 28L Travel Pack - Del Día that I had purchased years ago. I loved it, but it there were a couple minor issues I had that I hadn't thought to bring up with anyone at Cotopaxi, mainly being that there wasn't a water bottle holder and that the zipper was difficult to close around a specific piece on the side of the clamshell. That said, one day I went to a physical Cotopaxi store in Boulder, CO just to pop around with a friend and see what other wonderful things Cotopaxi had come up with since we'd last been, and I mentioned to her that I loved my bag but wish it had a water bottle holder. A store associate overheard me and suggested that I send in a warranty request to see if they would be willing to send me the newer, updated version of the bag which DOES have a water bottle holder (among other great features, like a more squared body so it's easier to pack and zip, as well as a strap for luggage handles and more robust shoulder straps). Cotopaxi not only sent me the new version of the bag (I sent them my older version in return), but they also let me pick a new color and they were extremely prompt with their customer service, which was also a real person and not automated! I could NOT be happier, genuinely. I love my new-and-improved bag and the incredible experience I had with the customer service agent gaurantees that I will continue buying from Cotopaxi for any of my bag, backpacking, and gear needs!!

I understand it could add value if the pack needed to be placed on a wet surface but it's not that often an issue *Lumbar strap should be removable. Granted I appreciate the addition of the strap put it would be nice to be able to disconnect it when you will not have the need. *The theft deterrent zipper loops are annoying. I can't imagine a trip where the need outweighs the annoyance but they are there if you need them so it's really up to your useWhat it is great for: *Weekends, *Longer trips when you plan to hit the laundromat, I packed 3 very flexible outfits and wore one on the plane, that's 4+ days with multiple outfit options before you even need to hit the cleaners. *Adding a third, very capable bag for a couple that uses carry on bags for longer trips. You could very easily add 4 days without need for a cleaners if you planned the three bags based on what fits where the best. *Also great if you drop ship stuff back home. I'll often pack, then UPS back items to lighten the load on the return trip. The size isn't too expensive to ship when it is fullWhat I would change on the next version: *The back padding, while appreciated does take up 3/4' of usable space. I'd reduce that padding by using a composite plate and that would allow another day's worth of clothes *The TPU panel. The whole concept says it isn't worth it because they also include a rain proof cover. The same soft material for the rest of the bag would be a better choice *Zipper pulls, but you could just do that on your individual bag *A water bottle holder would be nice *Adding a redundant side carry handle (one for each side). Granted one is enough but it would be simpler to move around the room while open if there was an easy grab handle on both sides *More solid color options, I know the mixed colors are the brand vibe but it limits the potential audience (just look how fast solid black sells out). Will I keep it: Of course, even with the limited amount of things I was being picky about there is simply no better option if you are looking in this very narrow niche

I've had my eye on this a long time and finally pulled the trigger on a recent sale. Used the backpack for a recent trip, so can now offer feedback. It's perfect for a 2-5 day trip, I'd say; I wouldn't be able to fit all I wanted for a full week, unless I was headed somewhere warm enough to not need layers/jacket, extra shoes, etc. I used compression bags and packed it full! Pros, in random order: aesthetics, durable materials, easy laptop access, laptop compartment against padded back meant I didn't need a sleeve for 13" laptop, waist belt hides away, comfortable to wear even fully packed (though I haven't tried it hiking yet), 4 grab handles (on top, bottom and sides), sturdy zippers, clamshell opening--so convenient, 2 small item zipper areas inside, key clip on ... MoreI've had my eye on this a long time and finally pulled the trigger on a recent sale. Cons: there is a section where the main zipper seam comes a little close to a sewn border inside, so the zipper catches there a little unless I run my finger along underneath while unzipping. It took a bit to figure out why it was catching in that spot; I thought it might be unusable initially but once I saw what was happening, I realized how to get around it. However, that does mean there is extra stress on the zipper at that point when fully packed, so I hope it will not lead to zipper failure in the longer term. For this price, I would expect smooth zipping all around. The only other complaint I have is no place to put a water bottle. I ended up leaving my Contigo at home and just buying a sport-type disposable one at the airport and carrying it the whole trip; not ideal. All in all I do love it and would buy it again, as the pros outweigh the cons by far. I just need to find a creative way to store a water bottle!

Some Things to Consider (Namely: It's Not a Backpack)
17 September 2024

I should start by clarifying that the version of the Allpa 28L I have is no longer in production, as I purchased it five years ago. It still technically works, but in the past few weeks the main zipper has become damaged and proves difficult for daily use, which is considered I wore it nearly every day since purchasing it impressive and worth noting. My biggest gripe with the bag is the design, namely the pocket system. It's better to think of the backpack as a suitcase first and foremost which can be worn as a backpack. It's better to think of the backpack as a suitcase first and foremost which can be worn as a backpack. If you want a backpack to use every day, you'll quickly run into some inconveniences with the pocket system. It's a hassle to try and quickly grab something out of the main compartment without having to open up the backpack entirely and lay it on a surface. This makes something as simple as putting groceries in the bag quickly difficult, as it's design necessitates placing items in a certain order to get the most out of the three compartments (I'm excluding the small inner pocket on the top left side of the bag here.). The bag clearly isn't designed to be opened much throughout the day, however, so this is more just to say that if you want a multi-function bag outside of travel, this will cause you problems.Another issue I had was with the material covering the bag. While the bag is surprisingly resilient to getting wet - I've worn it through heavy rain numerous times without the rain-cover on and haven't once gotten the inside of the bag wet - the colored material covering the bag will eventually start to degrade and fall off after extensive daily use, roughly two to three years. In a word, the backpack is great to be used exclusively as a carry-on. As long as you don't need to open it up regularly (or at all, really, I cannot emphasize enough how annoying it gets to always have to either find a surface to lay the bag on or risk looking like a street-rat with the bag open up on the floor to either put something inside or take something out), it's great. I was consistently suprised with how much I could jam into the bag, given the proper conditions. Nevertheless, for daily use, or even day-trips for that matter, the bag proves to be more trouble than it's worth. Again, the bag is clearly advertised as such, so it's on me for trying to force the bag to be something it wasn't designed for, but the particular use of the bag seems so specific that I felt it was worth taking some time to put into words.

Streamlined upgrade

I purchased the Allpa 28L Travel Pack a couple of years ago for a 10 day trip to the Monterey Peninsula. I flew that trip and wanted a small backpack that I could carry as a personal item along with my carry on. This pack is perfect for weekend trips, comfortably fits enough for 2-3 days (depending on the season) and accommodates a laptop and a tablet. It’s durable and has enough pockets to keep you organized. With grab handles all around it’s easy to snag it and go and I like the versatility of tucking the backpack straps away to carry brief case style- as a bonus this protects the straps and buckles from getting caught in car doors and conveyors. The only thing it’s really missing is a place for my water bottle! The newly designed Allpa 28 Travel Pack addresses the one major flaw of its predecessor- I have a place for my water bottle! To add the water bottle holder you loose one of the grab handles but the trade off is worth it- at least to me!Loosing one of the grab handles doesn’t really stop you from carrying it like a briefcase but without the ability to tuck away the straps I wonder if I will. Regardless, there are times when it’s nice to have all the straps and buckles safety tucked away.Love the new pocket at the top on the outside for stuff I need to access quickly but would rather not cram in my pockets. The larger top zippered pocket now has dual zippers instead of just one. Inside this pocket is a zippered mesh pocket with a key clip. The original bag has the key clip attached outside of the mesh compartment. My keys have ripped mesh pockets in the past, less chance with the key outside. The laptop and tablet access zipper is on the opposite side of the bag now and the anti-theft zipper was omitted here- I liked having the additional security, especially for my tech! The original pack includes a rainfly in a little side access pocket. I confess, never used the rainfly but I’ll miss the pocket. I stashed little extras in there like a set of eating utensils and a small flashlight or the occasional beach treasure. The zipper to the main compartment now has zippers that can accommodate a small pad lock but once you get inside the internal organization is the same- with one exception. The mesh dividers open toward the inside of the pack instead of outside of the pack. It’s a small detail but depending on where you are opening the pack, this will prevent the mesh from touching a questionable surface. It rare, but the upgrade nailed the less is more concept.

THE European Backpack? 🎒🌍
12 June 2024

My wife and I are halfway through our 1-month European backpacking adventure. We are currently in Armeno, Italy, but we will be in Zermatt by the afternoon. Here are my thoughts on the Allpa 28L so far.Overall comfortability. This backpack is PHENOMENAL for comfortability. The shoulder-straps are padded sufficiently while also maintaining a breathable design. The two-way adjustable chest clip allows the wearer to adjust the placement of the bag on the shoulders. I am a skinny guy with a very money structure, but this backpack fits comfortably and can adjusted for the optimal fit. The hip straps have revolutionized both my own and my wife’s traveling experience. On days where we are wearing our bags for the majority of the day, we can use the hip-straps the lift the weight off our tired shoulders and spread it out either evenly or disproportionately (the straps allow you to leave 90 percent of the weight on the hips rather than the shoulders. Don’t recommend for your posture’s sake, but still helpful.) The back of the backpack has an interior board. It is the key structural component that helps the bag maintain its shape and rigidity. This board offers greater comfort to the wearer, and keeps the contents of the bag from becoming felt through the exterior padding. (This board poses a problem for squishing the bag while going through European gate-checks as it would be more likely to snap then squish. In our experience it bends well, and still offers just enough flexibility to the bag’s structure. The exterior shell:My wife and I both bought an Allpa 28L, but we got ours in different styles. I bought the Del Dia while she bought the all-black bag. There is something to be aware of when making a decision for which bag to purchase. The Del Dia option has a strong, flexible canvas shell, which makes zipping or stuffing the bag easy and non-problemadic. The purchasing options with preset colors, however, have a firm, rubbery coating on them. This makes the shell less pliable, creating a soft rigidity for the bag’s exterior shell. I personally prefer the flexibility of the Del Dia option, but my wife liked it better than hers, so I’m stuck with the all-black option. ;)As a carryon for European Airlines:My wife and I were preparing for a journey across Europe, but we were also trying to do so in a way that would work with our college graduate budgets. With this in mind, we booked four inter-European flights with the two most restrictive airlines for carryon sizes (WizzAir, and RyanAir). We considered purchasing the Allpa 35L, but with the limited carryon size restrictions for our flights we decided to attempt the Allpa 28L. It didn’t fit the restrictions exactly, but the bag’s frame appeared flexible enough to squish into the test bin (and we found a photo of an Allpa 28L fitting into one online). Thus far, we have taken our bags through both RyanAir and WizzAir without anyone blinking an eye.Recommendation: if you are trying to avoid your bag appearing too large while at the check-in counter or at your gate, hide the hip straps underneath the exterior shell. All the straps of the bag can be unclipped and slid under the padded backing on the backpack, making your European traveling bag go incognito whenever it’s needed. That is what we’ve done, and it’s worked so far.The clamshell feature:The Allpa 28L having a clamshell opening has revolutionized our traveling experience. We’ve slept in a different place nearly every night we’ve been on this trip, so having a bin-styled backpack where I’d have to dig under all my folded clothes to reach a pair of socks would have wreaked havoc on my tidy heart. The clamshell opening makes easily accessible every part of my wardrobe and my other personal belongings. My one qualm with the Allpa 28L:In the design of the bag, there is one piece of interior fabric that seems to create an issue for me. When testing the functionality of the bag’s zippers, we first noticed that the zippers would get caught when unzipping the right side of the clamshell. Additionally, when we would be testing maximum packing capacity for the bags, we found that we could easily put a few extra items in and squish the bag to zip it back up easily enough, but there was a spot (the same spot the zipper would snag) where the back of the bag would refuse to meet the body. This is because a piece of fabric crosses the width of the interior but lacks flexibility. The makes creates a tautness that works against the bag’s flexibility. It’s hard to explain, and I’ll attach some photos, but this error in the design is more of an inconvenience than anything. If I plan to squish my bag when at the gate for my RyanAir flight, then I have no business packing the extra four shirts; the issue with the snagging zipper can be resolved by un/zipping while pulling outward or un/zipping the bag with one finger pressing the interior fabric as it goes over that area.

Using this for extended travel
16 May 2024

The 28 liter pack is amazing. Before I purchased I was concerned that it might be too small or that a bag without some harder built in structural elements might not be as comfortable to carry on my back. I absolutely love the light weight of it, how it opens up, zippered compartments, padded laptop pocket, comfortable shoulder straps, and antitheft loops. I am a light packer and don’t ever check luggage. I use this bag for international travel as my overhead compartment piece and pair it with a 23 liter over the shoulder packable zippered tote as my under the seat item. Between this bag and my tote I can fit everything I need for extended trips during the warm-ish seasons. I also like that it’s big enough while full to fit an empty day pack (like osprey daylite) ... MoreThe 28 liter pack is amazing. So far I’ve used this set up for two international trips each 2-3 weeks long, one during summer and one during fall. Prior to purchasing this bag I was using a 36 liter wheeled travel backpack, but the Allpa pack is far better. I don’t ever use the little rain jacket that comes with it though and contrary to other reviews requesting a water bottle holder, I don’t feel like I need that. I either attach my bottle to this bag with a carabiner or carry my bottle in my other bag. I would, and do, recommend this bag to anyone.
