I wanted enough space without being too big. I also considered price. I wanted more than just a large pocket, but some type of internal organization. The Allpa X stood out initially with its color scheme. So many slings were just black and atheistically bland. I appreciate the clamshell opening along with the standard pocket. There are plenty of internal pockets, but my biggest gripe is that I wish it had better admin sleeves. Some of the pockets feel a little loose and not snug. I wasn’t sure how I would like the large strap wings, but they have been okay for now. The bag feels very well built. Sometimes the front zipper gets snagged on the key hook ribbon. I wish some of the internal pockets weren’t mesh because items can get snagged in the mesh pockets if you’re not paying attention. Aquaguard zippers, at least on the front pocket, would have been nice. The strap seems a bit thin but not uncomfortable. I’ll probably find a better way of managing the strap tails as the little bands they used don’t do much.

But a colorful bag isn't going to make me spend money. What made me decide that I had to have it was that this was the first fanny pack/crossbody/hip pack to ever comfortably fit across my hips (not just tightly snatched against my waist, but actually SIT on my hips and not twist and turn) and feel sturdy sitting there. I've been looking for something like this for my DSLR lenses to be packed in when I'm out and about traveling so that I don't need to worry about reaching into a backpack to switch out my lenses when I'm in a time sensitive situation to get a good shot. Being on a mountain with heavy winds or being out on a moving boat does not make it easy to switch out lenses when necessary, but this pack does exactly the trick. The exterior is water resistant and there is also some padding for extra security. There couldn't be a more perfect bag if I thought one up for myself.

This Fanny pack is great- however there are some trade offs. I wanted a Fanny pack that was big enough to fit large objects, such as a library book, a water bottle, and a few other items, and has a solid waist strap. This fanny pack is large, has a solid waist strap, and has compartments that I can put things into, e.g. keys, a small wallet, a phone.I can fit a small water bottle and a smaller book, but not a water bottle and a larger book (e.g a library book). Couldn't recommend enough. Of course Cotapaxi is the icon brand for things like style and sustainability, but I truly love this pouch. As the designated hauler for and all odd ends? This guy has held portable phone chargers, trauma sheers, passports, multiple phones, my tiny first aid kit of travel meds and folding bandages. I even stuffed a modestly sized pair of binoculars for a day hike once. Pleasant surprise has been my companion.Yes, consideration of size is important. Cotopaxi has plenty of other options and fits. The pack itself weighs in at 12 oz, which I hardly notice. I'll happily report that the increase of size doesn't mean decrease in quality here.Material holds extremely well. I don't particularly remember if it has been marketed as waterproof, but it's kept out moisture remarkably well for the occasional storm I've allowed it through. To remember, cost includes a lifetime warranty for repairs. In my case, I found my bag in store, each fabric being completely black, and I adore it. My healthcare coworkers can't believe it's not companied issued. My family loved it for traveling. It just looks good on me. And yes - I'll occasionally rock the fanny look.Having watched my wife for so long with her cute little Cotopaxi hip bag, I'm finally enjoying my own. Hiking, easy lightweight pack for school, or at work, I can find a role to use it in.

Good pack, needs a couple of revisions
4 November 2023

Used this pack for a trip all over Japan. I didn't use it as a cross-body like I planned, because it doesn't lay flat (the straps don't accommodate that), used it as a front/hip pack. The hidden pocket in the back has a flaw, the zipper pulls up; so nearly every time I went to access it the pocket was open - the zipper weight would open the 'secure pocket'. The lanyard for a key gets stuck in the front zipper, so I had to make sure to stick my finger inside and hold that down when operating the zipper. The strap for the front pocket seems unnecessary, too much webbing, not sure what I would do with all that except maybe stretch it out and hang other gear from the sides???I love the organization and the size. I might get rid of a bunch of the webbing going to the front pocket clips.

Great update to the Allpa 4L Pack
3 May 2024

I have used and loved the prior design of this--the Allpa 4L. But this pack makes some key upgrades. It fixes my biggest complaint with the 4L, which was that the waist strap was very narrow, especially if you wear it over your shoulder. On this bag, the waist strap is nice and wide, and the buckle straps on the side that keep the front flap shut are smaller (which makes sense--they were way oversized on the 4L). This pack is also more rectangular than the 4L pack. It doesn't actually really feel a lot smaller, but it is lighter. I agree that the side zip inside the front flap is an improvement over the top zip (which, if you opened the flap, became a bottom zip). The top grab handle is also a nice improvement over the hanging loop on the 4L. So glad that Cotopaxi ... MoreI have used and loved the prior design of this--the Allpa 4L. It looked really well put together, but admittedly there are some minor flaws.I generally just put my 65W portable charger and a typical plastic water bottle in there and its comfortable as a side-sling bag, front across chest bag, but also a hip/fanny pack. Many did mention about the width of the clip/strap being a tad bit too small. While i agree, it doesnt feel as noticeable. There is a small strap in the front pocket thats for holding keys that occasionally snags against the zipper, but if opened meticulously, it's fine.Love the fact that is has a butterfly style opening for the front pocket, will lining and zippered pockets.Overall, its a very good pack, and I'm wearing it close to a daily pack when I'm out of the house and going around looking for restaurants to try out. I'm about 5'10 and it doesnt look abnormally small or large when I'm wearing it, but YMMV.

More of a lateral upgrade than what I was hoping for
21 June 2024

I've upgraded to an Allpa X 4L from their Kapai 3L. It boasts better construction, it's much more durable feeling. It's water-resistant thanks to its outer shell material versus the Kapai. It's also much more organized and has better padding for not only the materials inside but the pouch against the body. However, I consider it more of a lateral upgrade due to a couple drawbacks. I really enjoy the increased capacity and the way that it unzips in half. One thing that I'm really missing though is the quality in strap. Not sure why they decided to use the narrower strap compared to the wider hip/shoulder strap compared to other bags. It also sticks out a bit more even when it's mostly empty so it has a weird center of gravity and doesn't lay as flat against my body as the Kapai. It's certainly a better quality bag but not exactly what I was hoping for.

Near-perfect exploration bag

Almost everything about this bag is perfect. The color scheme and subtle contrast is fun without standing out obnoxiously. The entire construction is well built, and the rubberized outer coating is ideal especially with rain. The storage options are ridiculous, and you can fit almost every type of notable travel item you may need all day with good storage options for security vs ease of access. My only gripe (and it’s a big one) is the strap. The strap is a piece of thin one-inch webbing with two slide adjustments at each buckle and elastic keepers. This is not ideal whatsoever for this large of a bag, especially when worn cross-body, since it’s more difficult to get adjustment to fit well and digs into your traps when properly tightened, and does a terrible job of distributing weight when you start loading this thing with many items. If the next generation instead used a piece of thick two inch webbing (which you could weave multiple colors into to add to the fun factor), I think this would be a perfect bag.
