I spooled some of the 30 lb j-braid and took it out for an evening to throw. My line came back to me with a lot of knicks and fuzz in it. I was fishing opening water with nothing but grass bottom. Decided to re-spool my entire reel with my go-to suffix 832. It was such a weird thing. You’d think I had been fishing some of the craziest cover ever. I saved the line and will re-test at a later date.

After many years of using various braids, I found the Daiwa J Braid Grand has excellent knot strength and holds FG knots on light leaders without issues. After 10 plus fish, still no need to re-tie. A plus compared to some other braids I have used. This 6lb grand appears to have strength beyond the advertised rate and wind knots are a thing of the past. I now use 300 yards of braid rather than 150 yards with a backing line. I found the braid can catch on the knot connecting to the backing line even when the knot is not visible. I fish several times a month, so they get a good test.

Bought 6 pound Diawa J-braid, thought it would be great quality - made in Japan etc.. used for light saltwater estuary, & freshwater (bass & trout) on decent 1000 shimano Reels.Instantly had abrasion / wearing issues, gained wind knots easily & snapped once or twice with little pressure. Relative to other products I've used I wouldn't rate it highly (in my opinion). Still prefer Fins / Power pro etc. I've used in the past. Also trying Berkley ultracast soon. TBA

I fished this for the first time last summer for bluefin and now have it on all my reels. Consistent quality and strength, good round shape to the line (not as flat as a 4 carrier, and I like the island blue color for offshore fishing. Out in blue water, it is not as visible as the moss greens, bright yellow, or white. While it may not make much difference to the fish as I use 75 to 100 feet of top shot, it gives me more confidence, and a fisherman's confidence adds up to more fish making it to the boat. The color is also light enough to mark with a sharpie to give you precise depth control. I have it marked every 50 feet, and its easy to see the marks when dropping jigs down deep. I can with confidence hit the desired depth the captain is metering fish. After ... MoreI fished this for the first time last summer for bluefin and now have it on all my reels. All of this in a line that is at the same price point as other brands makes this a good value.
I bought this online about 2 weeks ago and all appeared to be well, it was super thin and great to cast. I went on one fishing trip and then the line started fraying (50 metres down the spool).I kept the line out of the sun, put it on with the right amount of tightness and kept it out of the water and still, no luck. It’s even snapping when I cast with 1/32 ounce jigheads. Not happy with my purchase. If you do buy, I’d recommend increasing the pound rating because it’s super thin. I went with 6lb. I’d get 10lb next time.
Seemed like the line was not consistent, that there were areas that it looked like the line had abrasion areas or inconsistencies. In these areas, the line was definitely weaker than it should have been. I am a bit fearful of both lost fish and lost lures. Since this 80 pound braid line was purchased for musky fishing - I am fearful that I made a mistake in buying this Daiwa branded line! I bought two spools of it and now have it on my musky reels and have already lost one lure from what appears to be an area of line that the spinning process was not performed properly. I am thinking I need to remove all of this line from my reels - throw in away and purchase another brand. This was part of my first ever on-line purchase from Fleet Farm. Fleet Farm was terrific, ... Fleet Farm was terrific, easy to order, shipped on time, thumbs up to Fleet Farm (they are just the seller, not the manufacturer of this product - sort of goes without saying . . . but)
Very smooth. Casts exceptionally well. Holds a knot reasonably well. Seems less prone to kinking or wind knots. However, it seems to fray more quickly than other brands. Hence, looses strength more quickly. Have to keep a close eye on it for fraying. Relatively expensive.
When I first tried the J-8 Grand several years ago I was not impressed. It was good line but wind-knotted frequently which makes it not so good. So I picked up another spool in my normal 8# and what a difference. I switched from the grey to the marine blue and the difference is unbelievable. Unfortunately I will never know why the newer Grand is better but it is the only line I use and buy currently. The 8# landed a 32" drum in the OBX surf so I know it is strong!
