Dali Oberon 5 Floorstanding Speakers - Black Ash (Pair)

(1,286 reviews)

Slim floorstanding speakers like the Oberon 5 are considered all-rounders among sound transducers. They require relatively little space, can be easily integrated into most living environments, and impress with excellent sound quality. The Oberon 5 is one of the particularly sonorous representatives of its kind. This is due not only to the stable cabinet, which is reinforced with internal braces to effectively combat disruptive cabinet resonances, but also to the uncommon technical features found in this price range. It is no surprise that the two woofers, developed in-house by DALI, ensure deep-reaching, highly dynamic bass and a balanced, natural midrange reproduction. The drivers feature particularly lightweight yet extremely stiff 130 mm (5 1/4'') wood fiber membranes, as well as magnetic systems made from the patented magnetic material SMC and high-quality voice coils wound with copper-coated aluminum wire. All of this results in a particularly impulsive, lively, and faithful reproduction of any music and film soundtracks. Above 2,400 Hz, the tweeter specifically designed for the Oberon series takes over the reproduction of all upper mids and high frequencies. The particularly large 29 mm dome is made from an exceptionally lightweight fabric, allowing it to reproduce even the shortest impulses in the signal very accurately. Thanks to its wide dispersion characteristic, the Oberon 5 is capable of filling the entire room with a cleanly layered stereo soundstage, rather than just the few listening positions directly in front of the speakers in the "sweet spot.".

A little pricy but lovely looks and a great sound

I finally had to ditch my battered, old, floor-standing speakers from the 70s (or was it 80s). I've Sonos in other rooms but it just couldn't match my old speakers in the main room. The Dali Ob 5s aren't great big, clomping things that dominate the landscape yet they look great in a modern setting. And the sound quality is excellent. In store I tried them out on a track from Gregory Porter (frankly not impressed but not sure what I was expecting) but then I tested with Hair of the dog (Nazareth), La Donna il mobile (Giuseppe Verdi) and Angie (Rolling Stones). Now at home they continue to impress. Why not 5 stars? Well, come on, they are a tad pricy. Nevertheless, I'm glad I did it. Now to dust off those LPs

Absolutely brilliant

After spending what felt like an eternity reading reviews and researching, I decided it was demo time. Arranged a demo with Ben at the Plymouth store and have to say the guys were amazing. Thanks so much.So I pitted the Dali against a set of wharfedale 4.4 (interested in the 4.3 but none in store). The wharfedales were brilliant, loads of bass and a detailed mid and high. I did find some highs a little shrill. The Dali were next, started to listen and thought they weren’t a patch on the others. Then about 5 minutes in the sound just completely changed and then it just got better and better.I’m near the end of my run in and they just sound phenomenal, I cannot fault them. Highly recommend.

Accurate and analytical.

I bought these speakers on the basis of reviews, personal preference and most importantly demonstration. I took along vocal, rock and an elderly classical recording that although some modern recordings would be better sonically this I felt would test how forgiving these speakers were. I'm pleased to say while still producing a musical sound they weren't too forgiving. I am a musician and have a home recording studio with monitors that don't contrast too much from the Dalis. They are analytical but musical with a staggeringly accurate soundstage. All recordings sound good, but a given a first rate recording they really shine! My type of speaker!

Dali Oberon 5 vs Q Acoustics 3030i vs Q Acoustics 3050iFirst off a bit of back story. I have had the Q acoustics 3030i for around 2 years now (plus the centre channel 3090ci), which I STILL think are excellent value for money @ approx £250/pair. They have good image, good clarity, reasonable dynamics though they run out of puff when driven hard and remarkably punchy bass for a small standmount speaker. However, I wanted more.Having heard friends tower speakers before, I knew the sheer presence, scale and weight they offered cannot be matched by standmount speakers. So, having been pleased with the 3030is, I tried out the 3050is @ approx £500/pair. So, having been pleased with the 3030is, I tried out the 3050is @ approx £500/pair. This was really quite a disappointing move as it turns out; yes they have more weight and scale and improved dynamics but the bottom end is foggy and bloated, and if i'm being perfectly honest the top end/ vocals sounded noticably muffled, almost as if the speaker/singer were reading a large newspaper at the time of recording. I couldnt quite believe my ears and thought this must be a defect, so I ordered another pair - but alas, the same traits were true once again. Things improved when pulling these out a fair way from the rear wall - probably around 60cm - but not to the point of being "good enough", nor was that aesthetically acceptable in my listening room. After much more research, here enter the Dali Oberon 5's @ approx £750/pair.Now then, at first glance you'd not think much of them - small and stylish, an unassuming guest would assume they were built for form over function. But fear not dear listener, the Dali's are a remarkable set of speakers. Lets start with highs & vocals; INCREDIBLE clarity which FAR surpasses even the the Q acoustics 3030is. Very impressive. Rather forward, but not harsh. Very much in balance. Moving onto mids, there is a little more weight here than in the 3030is but not as much as the 3050is. What you'd expect for a speaker of this size. Again very much in balance. Now onto bass; they certainly go down to around 40hz, though they felt less punchy even than the 3030is. However I have a feeling this was due to the 3030is weaker midrange by comparison, thus making them feel very strong down low. The Dalis bottom end is very smooth, and very detailed, never blooming or otherwise getting out of check. Once again, very much in balance. In summary of the frequency range, you guessed it:- Balanced- Articulate- PreciseOther audiophile notes:Imaging; Good. Better than the 3050is, and almost as good as the 3030is (with toe in). Best results were found following manufacturer recommendations of no toe in.Dynamics; Very good. Not quite as good as the 3050is, but close. Totally worth the trade off for the sound quality. Clarity and balance does not decline when pushed hard.Soundstage; Very broad, reasonably high. Offers the most forgiveness for listening position out of the 3 speakers.Scale; Good. Dead in the middle between the 3030is and the 3050is. It feels like it is "almost" what I was looking for! I suppose what you would expect from a large bookshelf/small tower speaker.ConclusionVery happy with these speakers for all of the reasons listed above. Perhaps more importantly however, what I don't like about them is:- I feel that they have "almost" enough scale/weight (which perhaps the larger Dali Oberon 7s would handle better). I would love a bit more, but I am not willing to sacrifice the clarity and balance that these offer, nor am I willing to accomodate the Oberon 7s with their recommended distance to rear wall.- They could be a little taller (or come with a small stand). As I mentioned it is a forgiving soundstage, but there is no denying they sound best with the tweeter at ear level. The difference is small, so not something you should be worried about, and even if you are - buy or build a small stand.- I feel that they could go lower. It is likely that this will improve when they are fully run in, but I do feel that for something 70% larger (by cubic volume) than the 3030is, that they should be able to dig a little deeper. Not a problem for me because I use a subwoofer anyway.MISCELLANEOUS INFOListening room approx 3.5x5m, listening across the narrow side.Amplifier is a Denon AVC-X3700H (tested with and without audyssey XT32).Tested with budget and midrange speaker cable.Usage approx 70% movies and 30% music.Placement approx 22cm from rear wall. Also tested with the Dali Oberon Vokal centre speaker; all of the same observations apply versus the Q acoustics 3090ci centre speaker.

A few weeks back I was looking for a pair of speakers to pair with my AMP & DAC. I’ve searched & researched a fair bit and wasn’t sure what I was going to go for. But when I walked into Richersound at London Bridge, the manager Terry went out of his way to make sure I had a good experience and gave me a few solid recommendations! He understood what I was looking for and what my equipment was. Even though my postcode is quite different to that of London Bridge, I made the journey a couple of times to London Bridge and not to the store in my area because I really enjoyed the service. Engaging, awe-inspiring sound(but not immediately)

We have had these speakers for a couple of weeks now. They sounded good even when they first arrived, but today, for the first time, after quite a few hours of running in, they totally seduced me. I was listening to a solo classical guitar album and I could hear the player's fingers on the fretboard, and the slight buzz of the lower strings. If I closed my eyes it was as if he was sitting right in front of me (and I have been to small gigs where I have sat right in front of the guitarist, so I know what it sounds like!). Sound is very subjective, and different people like different things. The main thing is, does the music, be it live or recorded, engage you? Great sounding speakers
8 April 2023

I had three trips to Richer Sounds to compare speakers/amp/CD. I have very little knowledge of HiFi, but the member of staff I spoke to was very patient and informative and answered all of my questions (and others that I hadn't thought of). The equipment arrived a few days later and the sound is amazing and very strong. I have fallen in love with my CD/record collection again. They were in the middle range of my budget, but with the Arcam Amp and CD player they are the perfect choice. The speakers are slim enough to blend in and on a sturdy base. They are also very well packaged - it took longer to get them out of the box than setting them up!

Lovely sound and great looks
10 April 2023

These speakers are fully living up to the outstanding reviews that led me to consider them. As expected, their performance has blossomed after a few days of breaking in with regular use and I'm now convinced I made the right choice. They're delivering very nice sound throughout the frequency and instrument range (I listen to both jazz and rock), but what I like most is that they seem to have a distinct symphonic characteristic. By this I mean that their sound presents as a well integrated mix of its different components, rather than the high, medium and lower frequency sounds appearing excessively separate from each other (the latter happened with some other products I compared the Oberons with). They're working well in a fairly large room, and their size and the walnut finish make them look discrete but very smart (see my photos). The Oberon 5s are enhancing my musical life. Thanks to the staff at Richer, Newcastle for the excellent help they gave me, and for the very fast delivery.

Sublime Straight Out Of The Box
18 June 2023

Thanks to Roger and Tony at the Norwich store for helping me with my purchase of these tiny marvels. I needed something less intrusive in the room that still gave me the musicality and scale of my old and far too large Tannoys. Straight out of the box these are better. The perceived frequency range of these speakers considering their size is nothing short of miraculous. They are young and being house-trained at the moment, but like a new puppy they are so willing and eager already. I have the light oak finish. It's love at first sight and sound.
