I wanted to try the round pointed #8. If one is going to buy an Isabey true high quality brush then these are the ones to buy, not the cheaper made black handle with the green on the bottom. If one is not familiar with using a true sable brush then no brand will make one more comfortable than this one. I say it heavy hearted because I love the Escoda Reserva also as well as some synthetic and synthetic blends. I was pleasantly surprised by it's great point, snap and just feeling like I put on a comfortable pair of well used shoes. It holds it's shape beautifully and as it is supposed to, it holds onto that load. This one gives more ability to control the wash and leaves a lovely softness. So I often do not always believe all reviews but I am enjoying this one and it ... MoreI wanted to try the round pointed #8. Nice sort of cyan color, turquoise with more dilution. Definitely more green than Phthalo Blue GS. Local underwater sea color tends to be more green. Haven't experimented to much with mixes yet but you could probably get a good transparent undersea color with a transparent yellow or maybe even Phthalo Green YS. This color could be used as a cyan if you like a CYMK palette. Bit pricy for a phthalo color, but everything has gone up, and a little goes a long way.

I really love Daniel Smith professional watercolor paint. They have such wonderful, and sometimes unique, colors. I especially like some of their granulating ones. If you don't like that quality, I suggest you first check their website to determine the various properties (pigment, transparency, granulation, etc.) of the color you are considering. I bought this color to use in some watercolor landscape tutorials I was following and the artist used this to create a mixed dark green ... that seems to be my nemesis!

I'm fairly new to watercolor but wanted to upgrade my paints. After doing A LOT of research I decided to go with the Daniel Smith Essentials set. Ironically, I found that having lots of colors in my old paint set, made me use them less. As soon as I got this set I started playing with mixing colors. These are extremely high quality paints with lots of pigment. A little goes a long way so it takes a bit of getting used to in balancing your mixes. But it is oh so worth it. And the price of this set is very reasonable, even though the tubes are tiny. It's the quality that matters. #sweepstakes
I have used many many wc brushes on the market including black silver velvet brushes, Kolinsky sable, Escodas both Versátil and Reserva, Isabey and I have the mop brush of this brand and tried the interesting inlaid liner #8. I really enjoy a bit more snap than the Black silver velvet line but also something that would hold quite a bit like a sable. I really have enjoyed playing with this brush to develop new shapes and I like the point too. It's great for backgrounds and indicating without too much detail yet can pull out details. Although it never replaces our workhorse brushes I find myself grabbing it. Try it, it's a great change. #sweepstakes. Do people really win those Blicks?.
As an avid fan of the works of other watercolor artists, I can tell a great pigment when I see it. For reference, I've tacked a photo of all my paints from Daniel Smith I've purchased so far. It was definitely a huge splurge for me, but considering the lightfastness ratings of most professional paints and the vibrancy in a single stroke, I consider these paints to be a solid value and worth the price. If there was anything I could change about my purchase with Daniel Smith, it's the fact that I got Alizarin Crimson instead of Permanent Alizarin Crimson or even a Quinacridone Rose. I needed a pigment that I could mix for rosy skin tones and the lightfastness rating in Alizarin Crimson is painfully low - enough for me to possibly let go of this paint or never use it ... MoreAs an avid fan of the works of other watercolor artists, I can tell a great pigment when I see it. As a beginner, I clearly didn't do enough research, but that's on me. The paints themselves are amazing! They mix well, spread far, and the colors are unreal. I would definitely, definitely fill my palette with more colors from Daniel Smith. #sweepstakes
I quit buying all other brands when I switched to Daniel Smith. I don't need anyone else. I have added way more colors than I expected because I bought the dot sheet to have the samples of the 238 colors and yes, I did want quite a lot and have bought many over the last 6 months. I recommned buying it first - it will save you money becuase you'll know exactly what you are getting with it. This brand has great lightfastness, only a few fugitives, plenty of non-toxics so I could pull out the Toxics (there are 20 toxics out of 238 colors), it also has excellent ability to pick up the colors for most of them - you have to check the staining rating on each color but most let you pick them right back up if you don't like what you laid down. And, these re-wet and handle ... MoreI quit buying all other brands when I switched to Daniel Smith. I don't need anyone else. And, these re-wet and handle nicely. They are highly pigmented so will last long. There really are too many great colors to keep a minimalist pallete. I wouldn't want one with these. I will continue to add more. The chocolates and browns are very important to me and I got a great range, as well as the reds and greens - plenty. I use them daily as i do a lot of wilf flowers and foilage, and food items and occassional portraits.#sweepstakes
Here is another addition to my pallet. I bought this to try as and under paint for backgrounds. Was not disappointed. Used Hansa yellow as undercoating when dry then Ihdanthrone Blue, a light green background with yellow under glow. Or New Gamboge undercoat and Ihdanthrone Blue on top, Olive Green with pale yellow glow. Or Quin Red-Orange and Ihdanthrone Blue on top, medium green with orange glow underneath. Need a deep velvety black for a background. Try Ihdanthrone Blue with Black on top. Find your own. There are endless variations to discover your own mixes.
I love building layers in my watercolors. I once did Koala bears facing each other that had a significant number of layers to get the semi realism I wanted. If I'd had Smith's luminescent and truly transparent colors it would have been so much easier to get what I wanted. The original painting is now over 40 years old, but a similar one I'm developing is taking much less effort with Smith's paints. If you're looking for the effects promised, try them. You will not be disappointed.
I love Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolors! I find that mixing them with water the pigment just mixes instantly and somehow exudes a lovely variety of colors depending on the ratio of water instantly. Then when it hits the paper if flows so well! This particular cool color I've grown to love. When mixed with other colors like any blue or yellow color the resulting purple or orange hue is brilliant and bright. It's gives me pure joy when mixing it on my palette.
