Each DANIEL SMITH Watercolor stick is about 3 full pans of DANIEL SMITH Watercolor paint, which makes it a terrific value. The DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks have the same properties of granulation, transparency, staining and lightfastness as the matching colour does in the DANIEL SMITH Watercolors in tubes because they are made with the same pigment. Watercolor Sticks also offer the same superior intensity as DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Paints. No clay fillers or wax of any kind, so they release their pigment easily just like the dried DANIEL SMITH Watercolors in your palette do into rich, vibrant colour. Paint & Mix – directly from a Watercolor Stick by applying a wet brush. Perfect for Plein air and travel. No watercolour palette is needed. Unique Drawing Tool – Watercolor Sticks are an expressive and fun tool for drawing directly with watercolours. Comfortable to hold and the tip can be sharpened for a more precise drawing tip. When sharpening, be sure to save the shavings, those are pure DANIEL SMITH Watercolor! You can add water to the shavings and turn them into liquid paint in a small dish or container. With DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks you can: Draw directly onto dry or wet paper for different line characteristics. Soften your lines with a wet brush. Blend colours with your wet brush both on the paper and Stick. Draw onto paper, then, with a wet brush, take up Watercolor Stick pigment and paint from that like you would with paint in a pan. Add water to create light washes using your brush. You can build up layers using the Watercolor Sticks for rich, saturated colours. Draw over painted areas with the Watercolor Sticks adding detail or line work. Create texture by applying the Watercolor Sticks in different ways both wet or dry. DANIEL SMITH Watercolor Sticks are an expressive addition to every artists’ palette – adding more creative possibilities!

Side-By-Side Evaluation of Winsor & Newton, (W&N), and Daniel Smith, (DS), Watercolor SticksStraight from the packaging both products look and feel very different: The W&N sticks are 2.25 inches in length, are about .25 inches across, and have a square tubular shape with slightly rounded corners; the DS sticks are 3 inches in length, about .5 inches in diameter, and have a round shape and blunt ends. The W&N sticks feel harder to the touch, and present a waxy texture similar to that of a B&S Crayola. The DS sticks feel softer to the touch and have a somewhat sticky texture more closely associated with that of a lipstick. However, when simply making straight marks on cold press 140 lb. paper, both surprisingly feel very similar and both deposit about the same amount of pigment, given that the pressure and contact angle are consistent. In actual use, the products perform differently. I used each of the brands in an exercise in which a clean brush saturated with clean water to moisten the pigment on the end of each of the three sticks of both brands and make a series of paint lines, splatters, droplet marks, and wet-on-dry marks using the actual sticks moistened with the clean water applied with a water-saturated clean brush. Both products behaved differently under relatively the same conditions imposed by the experiment. The DS sticks more readily became saturated with the applied water than the W&N products. The resulting splatter marks were much larger and more intense in color than those of the W&N sticks; however, I found that if I added more water to the W&N sticks I could get comparable splatter results. The same was true with respect to the paint line and droplet mark results for both products. Using the sticks to make marks after saturating the marking-ends with water, each product produced deep, rich paint lines and marks when applied directly to the paper.

Highly recommend. I have used these sticks for years! They make beautiful marks and give a gorgeous saturated color. I use them in conjunction with acrylic paint on watercolor paper. I make marks with the sticks first then use acrylic paint. This creates a beautiful result. These sticks last for years without any issues.

I am trying out these watercolor sticks to see how useful they would be for my art. So far, I have only tried Ultramarine Blue and Serpentine Green. Both have performed exceedingly well and to my expectations. but their overall utility is limited to fill in, lines, and shading. At least that is what I have experienced. Not so useful for painting larger areas, but I didn't expect them to be. #SWEEPSTAKES

I prefer French Ultramarine to regular Ultramarine because it granulates more (which I admit isn't everyone's cup of tea). I buy the sticks because I find them to be most economical form. A stick is two full pans, and the price is less than a 15ml tube. The stick is also quite versatile. You can cut off a piece to put into a full - or half-pan; you can draw with the stick and use a wet brush to spread it; or you can simply dab your wet brush onto the end of the stick to pick you the pigment.
Fantastic line, economical, versatile, great for urban sketch. Love Piemontite Genuine for landscape and urban sketch. It's a unique beautiful moody earth somewhere between Burnt Umber and Indian Red with a lot of granulation. Could be the singular earth on a limited palette.
I have now purchased nearly all colors in these sticks but will only review this one. I started with just two and was very impressed with the portability for travel After experimenting with ways to use them, I was even more impressed. The same beautiful colors and good quality as other Daniel Smith paint forms, all wrapped up in a tidy little stick! As a plus there are nice little plastic containers that keep them safe and fresh. I watched their video on ways to use and ended up getting a few more, liking them even more, and in the end getting all available colors.Highly recommend!
I reviewed this product when I got the sodalite one in a box. This time it just bought the new gamboge color, a nice clear vibrant yellow. One thing I hate about the yellows that always come in the halfpan sets I buy is that they're so cloudy/chalky/opaque they muck everything up. This one is not like that at all. Fine quality, expecting it to last for a long long time like the sodalite one still is, even though I use the heck out of it.
I just recently started using watercolor sticks. This is a new media for me and I really enjoy the way I can use them for mark making as well as a typical watercolor paint. They are very versatile and don't melt in the sun. This neutral tint is kind of like a Paynes Grey color. I will be buying more colors. They seem to last a very long time compared to other forms of watercolor paints. Worth the price. #sweepstakes
After I saw a YouTube on the Daniel Smith watercolor sticks, I decided to add a few to my pants. Omg! I love these! There is no more trying to get all the paint out of the tube or trying to get the top on straight. The color is vibrant and the quality is equal to what you get in the tube. The sticks are easily dissolved in water. I'm impressed. Compared to a tube, the cost is a little bit less. The downside is that if not dry when you put up, the pigment can make a mess.
The sticks are wonderful. First of all, they provide a lot of options to paint with them: directly from the stick one can use a brush, or use them on paper, wet or dry, they also can be dissolved in water and used as typical watercolors. The colors are wonderfully bright, and one can add extra texture. They are really dreamy.#sweepstakes
