I would have preferred it if it came without an operating system. This Inspiron 15 is a good addition to my DELL XPS13 on which I also run Kubuntu 24.04 and Endeavour OS from external drives. DELL's set up system does not get in the way with secure boot and EFI but makes managing these instrusive systems quite easy.At the price I paid for the Inspiron 15 it gives me total satisfaction and delivers more than I expected.

Almost great.

I'll start with the positives -Very good CPU performance for a low power CPU.Respectable GPU performance, many older games can be played at medium settings.Keys have a nice feel to them, not to spongy. Slightly firm with nice little 'bump' to let you know you've pressed them. The touch screen works well, very responsive and accurace.Battery performance is good considering it's only a 3 cell battery, just don't run it at its highest performance all the time. The speakers are pretty decent and have enough volume for my uses. Not too heavy which is always nice.Good upgradability. The laptop has 2 RAM slots, one filled by the 8GB stick so upgrading to 16GB is easy enough. The SSD is in an M.2 NVMe slot so can be upgraded if you want. Many laptops come with ... MoreI'll start with the positives -Very good CPU performance for a low power CPU.Respectable GPU performance, many older games can be played at medium settings.Keys have a nice feel to them, not to spongy. This is a HUGE issue with this laptop and a few other people have said the same.Just booting up will see your CPU hit 90c+, that's really not acceptable.Surfing the web the CPU with a few tabs open will frequently jump to 80-90c.A few times the laptop has actually restarted because it was overhearting. On one occasion it wouldn't even restart for 2 minutes until it had cooled down.Chaging any of the performance settings does nothing to prevent this issue.Just in case it was Dells bundled software I decided to re-install Windows from scratch on a new SSD which I installed. It did nothing to prevent the thermal issues.Until I try replacing the thermal paste, just in case that is the issue, I have had to use 3rd party software to limit the maximum temperature the CPU will reach.Sadly that means performance is reduced.I tried installing AMD Ryzen Master to see if undervolting/curve optimiser would help, the laptop blue screens as soon as that is installed. The only way to fix the problem without any 3rd party software is changing your power plan so that the maximum power state is at 99%.That prevents the CPU from boosting over the base clock speed so impacts performance massively.I don't even think replacing the thermal paste will fix it, I think it's just a poor cooler in this laptop. The screen is anough issue.250 nits max brightness and 45% NTSC (around 63% sRGB) means colour accuracy isn't great and the image looks a little washed out.The SSD it comes with is bottom of the barrely. No DRAM cache (which isn't a big surprised) and is low endurance QLC NAND.It's a no-name brand so reliability is an unknown.I replaced the drive anyway so not an issue for me.Many new laptops have USB-C charging, even cheaper ones. This one doesn't which is a bit of a letdown but not a huge problem. All in all, this laptop could have been great. The only major issue that would make me advise people not to buy it is the thermal problems. If Dell could fix that, at the right price this laptop could be great. If you're OK with changing the power plan and running the CPU at reduced performance it may not be an issue for you.

Troubles to start with, laptop froze on start up while selecting the region or country I'm in, waited 5 minutes and had to do a hard restart, finally made it through set up. Next day, while using the laptop a message pops up "an error occurred and needs to restart", not once but twice within 20 minutes, it happened at least once the next day also, it has stopped doing that. I had everything updated the first day yet the following 2 or 3 days it seemed every time I come to use it during use it would need to restart for updates, it's a new computer how many updates could possibly have been added in 2 or 3 days after it was already updated. I would have preferred if the keyboard was not set so far forward and I would have been fine with the smaller mouse pad had it been moved back. Not used to a keypad on the right side on a laptop, my previous two didn't have it, because of this the letter part of the keyboard and the mouse [ad are both off center of the laptop which feels awkward, hard to get used to, feels nothing like a regular full sized computer keyboard. Battery doesn't last as long as I would have expected, if I added up use time throughout the day it would maybe be about 3 hours total of continuous use. Laptop is supposed to have power on opening but if it sits idle for 4 to 5 hours or overnight it doesn't work, I am gathering it is part of the power management and powers down after a certain time frame. I haven't looked at settings but it needs it since the battery doesn't last anyway. The last thing is I would have preferred a white plastic option so the lettering was black, it would have been easier to see than the lettering on it now, should have got the backlit keyboard option I guess.Overall a decent laptop for the price.

Dell Inspiron 15 3535 Laptop pros and cons

The laptop itself works quite well - very fast, long battery life, good documentation. Three hardware issues are annoying. The first one (I knew about when I ordered it) is the lack of an optical drive. I ordered one separately - only $40, but it seems very flimsy and reads only DVDs and not CDs. Also, the documentation on the drive is nonexistent. It came with an installation DVD which was outdated, and I wasted a lot of time trying to get it to work. I've pretty much gotten used to this, but it always requires an adjustment when I move between my other computers that have separate mouse buttons. Finally, I'm still working on getting several older applications to work on Windows 11. They work fine on Windows 10. This will be a real problem if I can't get them working -- but this is not Dell's responsibility.

Everything I Needed

I looked at a lot of providers before making my purchase. I use the laptop for writing, business applications, video conferencing and web browsing and this had all the features that I needed. It was also sold by an American company and still reasonably priced. I must say that there are significant benefits to purchasing directly from the manufacturer rather than having a retailer in between the manufacturer and the purchaser. That is evident from the moment you order the laptop. I was kept apprised of its arrival and it came in one day. Amazing. This forced a decision during set-up that I wasn’t planning on making for 30 days. Otherwise the set-up is straight forward and takes about 20-30 minutes if you have all your passwords. I’m a bit slower than some but that’s what it took me. I haven’t put it through all the paces to date but it appears to be just what I needed. It’s starts quickly, and if plenty fast for office work and web browsing. Everything is as advertised and excepting the MS Office issue, it has been a positive experience to date. I have confidence in Dell’s customer support based on all of my interactions both during and after the sale and I look forward to a long relationship with Dell.

The Dell Inspiron 15 works very quickly and efficiently, except in one respect (as far as I am concerned). There are no separate left and right command buttons because they are incorporated in the touchpad: Awful if you have large, insensitive fingers and a retrograde step in design. The touchpad itself is over-sensitive and I found that the cursor was moving as I lifted my finger from the pad to make left or right click.I have overcome the problem by using a separate user-friendly mouse, together with a detached keyboard (simple cheaply purchased items wired through a USB port). that makes the laptop very easy and comfortable to use.I am not too keen on the way that on opening raising the screen the hinge lifts the back of the machine. Because of its light construction, this could prove a potential area of failure. I note that a previous reviewer reported a broken hinge. My only other gripe is that Windows 11 is installed! Oh dear: Why has Microsoft tried to re-invent the circle and come up with a square? The straightforward, logical system of managing folders and files found from XP (the best!) to Windows 10 had been ditched in favour of the 'new' counter-intuitive system. Someone told me that it is better for those using touch-screen devices. Not for the rest of us!But that lies at the door of Windows, not Dell.Overall, though, apart from the touchpad, I consider it to be a very good purchase.

Exceptional Performance and Reliability
17 March 2024

The keyboard is comfortable for long typing sessions, and the touchpad is fairly responsive and accurate. Furthermore, the screen is excellent, very bright and highlighted with much color and sharp detail, which really helps when using it.The battery life issue is another one that the Inspiron 15 (3520) just nailed. It, therefore, gets me easily throughout the whole day, and even at times without needing to recharge, and kind of cool to me since I am always on the move here and there. The fast charging feature is also a lifesaver, quickly getting me back to full power when I'm in a hurry

Good laptop overall.

Very good overall laptop, it works completely fine the way it is. Has a decent keyboard (don't know why people are hating on it so much), and is really fast; boot up takes like 5 seconds. Battery life is a little disappointing, with the 8 hours lasting only if you use it for simple browsing and only that. Other than that, you can use battery saver and download Dell Power Manager and do some really cool stuff, like limit what it can charge up to (I put mine to 85%) and have another battery saver option for lower CPU usage. It's hinges have been fine so far, put's the laptop up like it shows, however, kind of useless since the amount of space given for air to go in is quite limited. Temperatures can go pretty high too by the way, and your fans even may go crazy at ... MoreVery good overall laptop, it works completely fine the way it is. Temperatures can go pretty high too by the way, and your fans even may go crazy at times for no reason, so I recommend setting your maximizing CPU usage to 99% at least or at 90% if you only use it for browsing and light usage. Display is a bit on the meh, in terms of colour, but not much of a difference. You can just calibrate it using AMD Adrenaline service or something else. Also pretty cool to hear that you can add another GPU if you want, instead of using the Vega 8 iGPU, being the Nvidia MX550, however I have been unable to find the produce online, so may have to talk to Dell for that one.Anyways, really good in terms of how smooth it is. Trackpad is also really smooth and easy to use and not very heavy, not too light with thin outer screen edges, making it looks really clean.

Very good overall quality

Works very well and is powerful enough for my purposes no complaints on overall Dell quality. Dell should include higher battery capacity. Dell should improve the quality and ruggedness of the DC power charging jack, plug and cord. I have had issues with all past Dell laptops I and many others have purchased both with the jack on the laptops and the plug and charging cords failing over time and rendering the laptop useless as it can no longer be recharged. For the sake of of a possibly less than a dollar cost that DC jack issue should be addressed and fixed. I am amazed when any reputable manufacturer for the sake of cost savings goes with lower quality parts that the consumer directly interfaces and directly impacts the consumer and their use, enjoyment and ... MoreWorks very well and is powerful enough for my purposes no complaints on overall Dell quality. Your warranty for that issue should be for a minimum of 5-10 years. A 2 year warranty and support should be standard with Dell laptops and not an additional cost. Disappointed the keyboard is not backlit, backlit keyboard should be standard on all models.
