The monitor arrived in a box that was perfectly designed to prevent shipping damage. The setup was plug and play. Because I had all of cables prepositioned, I took me less than 10 minutes to be fully operational. At the aforementioned price point, this is not for everyone. However, for a power user I could not give it a higher recommendation.

This is, simply, a wonderful monitor overall. It's bright, has a lot of features, worked, out of the box with my new Mac Studio. The monitor was easy to assemble (basically, attach the stand). There is no bleed around the edges of the screen as there is with some monitors. However, typical of LED monitors, there is bleed-through on the screen during dark images. This can, however, be offset to some degree by dimming the LEDs. Further, the bleed-through is not that significant under normal usage conditions like working in an office setting during the day and with typical lighting. I know it was an attempt to make the front more appealing but I would think that convenience and practicality should also be of some importance. I don't know why monitors can not have their controls, or at least the important ones (e.g., volume, brightness), located on the front of the panel. Even with the programmable shortcuts, it is, to my way of thinking, cumbersome to adjust. The only other thing I would change would be the sound quality. It is not very good and one would think that a monitor in this price range would have better audio quality. Nevertheless, overall, I love this monitor and I would buy it again.

This Dell 40-inch monitor's main attraction is that it offers enough desktop real estate to compare two documents side by side while also viewing your calendar, to-do lists, and other important windows. Resolution is adequate - comparable to that offered by an iMac - as is color and speed; the optimization compromises made with cost are sensible; there are no gross deficiencies. The stand is excellent and offers good vertical, tilt, and swivel adjustment. Blacks are slightly gray, and brightness might not be adequate in an extremely well-lit room, if those factors matter to you. The buyer should also be aware of a few nits: it's impossible to see directly the ports for plugging in cables, but use of a phone's front camera set underneath the monitor can get the job ... MoreThis Dell 40-inch monitor's main attraction is that it offers enough desktop real estate to compare two documents side by side while also viewing your calendar, to-do lists, and other important windows. The brightness can't be controlled by a Mac directly, but Dell provides a somewhat awkward app accessible from the menu bar that solves the problem. There's no built-in camera, but Logitech offers good ones that work well with it. You'll likely want much better speakers than the built-in ones. You'll also likely want third-party apps that give you more options for screen pixel count than the defaults. At the maximum resolution print sizes are quite tiny; setting larger font size choices in 'view options' helps, except that menu bar icon sizes do not seem to be adjustable. Since solving these setup issues, I've loved using this monitor. If you need a monitor with generous screen area, this one merits your consideration!

Excellent monitor all round. Resolution and real estate are superb.
17 September 2022

Very happy with this monitor. I'm using it as a display for my MacBook Pro M1 and a desktop PC. The built in KVM switch works almost flawlessly so I can switch between Mac and PC very quickly and easily. Very very occasionally it doesn't bring the keyboard along with it when I switch, but a quick power cycle of the monitor takes care of that. It has only happened twice in the few weeks I have owned it though, so it's really not a concern given the workaround is so easy. The monitor size is absolutely fantastic for coding, which is my primary use case. The added width versus a traditional monitor allows me to position my IDE so that my main code editor is directly in front of me instead of slightly to one side. That is a very nice ergonomic win. The added width versus a traditional monitor allows me to position my IDE so that my main code editor is directly in front of me instead of slightly to one side. That is a very nice ergonomic win. The additional screen real estate allows me to keep documentation or a running app visible alongside the IDE. It really is a superb setup. Not cheap, but there is a lot to be gained here. Text is crisp and clear. I migrated from a 27" iMac 5K so I was slightly concerned that the lower PPI on this display would be noticeable. That was totally unfounded. I have other monitors at 108 ppi, which is a very noticeable drop from the 217 ppi of the iMac. This monitor comes in at 139 ppi and I really cannot tell the difference vs the iMac. Obviously there actually is a difference there, but for my eyes they both look the same in terms of detail reproduction etc. I found an online Retina PPI calculator which tells me that this 5K2K monitor would become "Retina" at a viewing distance of 25 inches. i.e. At or beyond 25" you should not be able to distinguish any individual pixels and there would be no real visual acuity gain from adding resolution. As it happens I'm at pretty much spot on 25 inches viewing distance and it really does look perfect. So, not a cheap monitor by any means but a fantastic result and it is doing exactly what I hoped it would. In my case it has been a very worthwhile investment.

Great Monitor but Too Flat
11 February 2023

I use this monitor at my job doing data science programming. The massive real estate is fantastic and allows for at least three 120+ col. wide x 120 lines tall emacs windows plus many terminals without overlap. The screen response is great and colors are also great in sRGB mode. The only complaint I have is that it needs a 2300R curve rather than 2500R. The flatness of the monitor means that I find myself leaning to read text on the edges of the screen and it's a bit frustrating because otherwise the monitor is fantastic. I have an LG 38 ultrawide at home and the 2300R curve is far more comfortable. I know this difference is picky, but it would make a very good monitor a great monitor. Yeah, the resolution is not 'retina' but for that to happen on a monitor this size you would ideally need to double the number of pixels in both directions to 11k x 4320 resolution; good luck with that. None of us could drive it reliably nor afford it.

Great monitor for the price. Missing some nice-to-have features.
21 July 2022

This is an excellent monitor for the price. It's just the right size for most tasks, and has a ton of very useful features. The overall dimensions work well for side-by-side windows. It's a little too narrow for three across. Side by side is also the best if using the KVM feature. If you do use the KVM I recommend using an additional software KVM like Multiplicity for seamless side-by-side operation. However, most of the time I use Dell Display Manager and hotkey between devices. The nitpicks I have are as follows. First, no HDR support. That would have been nice. The KVM feature doesn't allow you to *pin* the Ethernet cable or any USB ports to a device full time. Finally, the second USB-C port is not tucked away with the rest of the ports, so when you use it, it becomes impossible to hide that cable away. Not a great layout. Hopefully the next version of this monitor addresses some of these asks.

Great productivity monitor

This screen replaced a 36” LG ultrawide that, despite having good reviews, drove me crazy and had terrible washout. This monitor is basically perfect for my purposes. I’d prefer a higher pixel density as I use macOS and it doesn’t match the target density of that OS, but it’s as good as it gets right now with an ultrawide. So far the monitor has no idiosyncrasies that bother me, the image is as uniform as I expect for a monitor in this class, and the colours are quite good right out of the box. No dead pixels, light bleed is minimal. I’m not saying there is nothing I would improve, but for the price I got it for, it was as good as I could have hoped for, I have no complaints, and it destroys the LG that preceded it. I really like this monitor, but I ended up returning it. See cons for why Pros: - Size. This is a huge pro. - Great resolution - Thunderbolt 3 support (works good with macs) - Gigabit + KVM hub built right in. - Lots of inputs Cons: - Not quite retina pixel density - No thunderbolt daisy chaining - Slow to sleep (does a whole detecting signal cycle when you sleep your mac) - No native brightness or volume control (needs 3rd party DCC control software) - Dark/low contrast colors "bleed". Hard to explain but you get blurry text when its like a red color on dark background. The best analogy I can give is is its similar to an analog signal bleeding effect. - Un-reliable in my experience. Why I returned it: The monitor worked great for 4-5 days after I bought it, then it would periodically get a vertical line pattern in the picture which was then followed by an obnoxious brightness flickering around 60hz that would last minutes to hours, and would get worse with use. Dell replaced the first pannel, and the second pannel had the same issue. Either the hardware is plagued with issues that I was 2 for 2, or its sensitive to some other part of my arrangement. Either way it was unacceptable for the price, and turned into a tremendous waste of time trying to troubleshoot.

From time to time, I use Spyder 5 Pro to color correct my 32" 4k Dell monitor. For me, the 40" Dell UltraSharp Curved monitor seems to have better true colors out of the box with no color corrections than my 32" screen. The black level is far better. The crispiness and contrast is much better (remember to adjust ClearType for better looking fonts in Windows 10). I am actually considering replacing my 32" with another Dell UltraSharp 40 Curved monitor and have two of them side by side, but the width may be too much for the neck to deal with. If I could come with a request, please make a 60" version of this monitor. The monitor is slightly curved, not much, which works very well with the software I am using, like Photoshop. A deeper curved monitor is more designated for gamers and I would avoid using such screen for Photoshop or other software where you need to see straight lines. For me, Dell found a perfect depth on the curve for this monitor. I am waiting for a new computer to arrive. Since this 40" curved monitor has the option to show windows of two PCs at the same time, I will try it out and connect both my older Dell Alienware PC and my new one. Having a monitor of this size with screen sharing between computers can save a person for a lot of time when installing and configuring a new computer, by seeing both on a screen. Make sure to get a keyboard and mouse that easily can switch between computers/laptops with a push on a button, like e.g. Logitech MX Keys and Logitech MX Master 3 mouse. I had one problem when connecting the monitor to my PC using DP (DisplayPort). The screen would not turn on. I installed everything of drivers etc. but the screen remained black. Since I first could not find any power button on the monitor, I thought it did not have any. After some Google search, I finally found the power button oddly hidden behind the bottom-right side of the screen and heaven appeared. The screen has some inbuilt speakers. They work okay. There is no bass and you cannot expect to play loud music. I have no problems using the inbuilt speakers for Zoom meetings, etc., but would definitely get some external speakers if playing music.

Worth every Penny!
18 April 2021

I’ve designed technologies such as color laser printers and video projectors for 22 years as an embedded systems engineer. I need a lot of screen real estate because I generally have more than two dozen programs going simultaneously. The U4021QW seemed to fit the bill for my home office - so I gifted myself one for my birthday. I felt I might have overspent spoiling myself, but after using it for a month I realize this monitor is worth every penny I spent. While one may believe a monitor’s technical specifications objective to make the decision to purchase, the visual realm is very subjective and two different monitor models with otherwise identical technical specifications (brightness/resolution/color gamut) might not look equally pleasing to the eye. That’s because besides the brightness, resolution, dynamic range, and color fidelity there are additional unpublished proprietary technical specifications. This secret sauce is what the real differences in monitor quality are all about and at times more important than the published resolution/brightness/color gamut/dynamic range specs. A hypothetical example - a monitor may have higher brightness spec but look worse than another model with lower brightness spec because the former monitor’s color fidelity degrades at higher brightness levels caused by either the LCD panel or drive electronics saturating at high drive levels or perhaps due to internal video pre-processing - though highly technical, monitor display design is an art. My requirement is clearly legible fine pitch text without eye strain at high resolutions because as a developer I have multiple code editors and CAD programs going simultaneously. Over 30 years I’ve used CRT monitors from 1280x1024 resolution with 0.32 mm pixel pitch and have been waiting for a monitor of this size/quality/resolution. Finally after 3 decades, I consider my wish granted - prophetically on my birthday. The image is bright with very good contrast even though my desk is adjacent to a bright window. That and text rendering quality is about all I care about. I use both MacOS and Windows, I run the monitor at full 5120x2160 resolution, 10pt text is crisp, not pixelated, and perfectly readable - the OSes are rendering text with anti-aliasing, but still. Increasing sharpness from 50% did not improve text rendering quality much for me, but that is subjective and your mileage might be different. No less important is the curvature, which allows an ultra-wide monitor to provide a significantly better subjective experience than a flat ultra-wide monitor. At 40”, a curved monitor is a must, the U4021QW is perfectly curved for my purposes, not too much, not too little. Last but not the least, with more than enough USB ports in most all USB connector flavors, Thunderbolt connectivity, DP/HDMI ports, a built in KVM, and power delivery make this monitor highly user friendly. I finally have a monitor I can use most efficiently with the least amount of dongles, hubs, KVMs or cables running everywhere. I’ve a 4’x6’ desk the monitor totally dominates. Since the monitor is quite large, I benefited from mounting on an monitor arm. That allowed me to maximize aesthetic appeal, desk space, and cable management - Note the minimum 38lb weight requirement of the monitor arm if you install on one. I don’t do graphics design, or photography so I don’t need a wide color gamut, nor require super accurate color fidelity or dynamic range (HDR), so I am not qualified to comment much on those aspects beyond that the color fidelity is more than adequate to my subjective eyes for my purposes, and for many others as well. Not being a gamer I can’t comment on refresh rate either. Now I have to figure out how to finagle one for my work office!
