The computer’s design does incorporate a smart disc media card reader. The laptop’s USB ports are limited and that is acknowledged and addressed by Dell with the addition of an external 1 USB-C to USB-A v3.0 adapter which also incorporates an HDMI connection. What is built into the laptop are two Thunderbolt 4 connection ports and an additional “C” type cable connection to accommodate the power adaptor and charging cord.The Backlit Keyboard is always a nice feature that I have become accustomed to over the years in my laptops and keyboards. It is a particularly useful feature when working in lowly lite areas like on an airplane or working in evenings at dusk. The keyboard is smooth, and the tactile feeling of the keys allows for fast typing with very few, if any, mistakes. I do miss having a numeric keyboard to interface with on the right side of the primary keyboard. Dell has chosen to omit this on this model. The 0.92 megapixels camera delivers 720p resolution. This is certainly adequate for zoom meetings but is a little grainy if you are using it to try to deliver the exact color of an object through visual communication. There is also a headphone jack, a microphone input jack, and a USB Type C charging port. This laptop was designed without an ethernet port which is a little surprising. Wireless connections are based on 802.11 AX, Wi-Fi 6 and there has been no issues with instant internet connection to the router. Sometimes touchpads want to lag, but this one does not seem to do that at all. It is a glass surface, operates smoothly and seems to be precise.Constructed of aluminum. the laptop Is noticeably light. It I less that one inch thick at only 0.71 inches, is 13.57 inches wide, 9.06 inches deep and weighs 4.21 pounds. The operating system opens by either use of a password, numeric code, or the built-in fingerprint reader. The Dell PS 15 laptop operates on a 6-cell battery or an electrical power supply of up to 130 watts. The computer comes with a 1-year Premium Support Warranty on both parts and labor.

At $1,500 full price it should have more than a 60hz display that lacks any kind of Free-Sync or variable refresh rate. The screen is bright and vibrant and has the ability to change colors, brightness, and contrast based on your environment and what you’re viewing on screen but then as soon as any fast movement is introduced like scrolling or even popping the Windows menu open the whole experience falls apart and looks like a “cheap” $400 netbook from just a few years ago. While many will find this more than suitable for what the main focus of this laptop is, I find it lacking for the price.This laptop will play MW2 on very optimized low settings at 50-60fps but looks very rough with all the screen tearing. It will handle games like Terraria, Among Us, Rocket League, etc much better though. Fortnite is playable as well as long as it auto detects it should run in DX12 as DX11 isn’t supported on Arc GPU’s. As Intel works on its drivers and is able to run more games from Direct X 11 and back, thing should improve somewhat, but again the screen is the biggest issue so don’t buy this if you need one PC for school and gaming or business travel and gaming.My other big complaint is in typical Dell Fashion it is loaded with bloatware. Tons of unneeded Dell programs, the only legitimate one being Support Assist and MAYBE MyDell if you want their built in equalizer for the speakers, but most any music service such as Spotify has its own EQ options. They also include the Virus masquerading as an Anti-Virus McAfee LiveSafe for a year. DELETE THAT as soon as you update your laptop. Windows Defender is all you need anymore. 3rd party antivirus is so 2000’s.Really, this laptop is a great setup if you don’t need anymore than a 60hz screen, but I would certainly not recommend it at more than it’s $1,500 MSRP. Even at the sale prices I’ve seen its better but still hard to accept. Don't even bother looking at the models with NVIDIA GPU's as the prices balloon quickly and they still include the same screen as this model. There is an OLED display but it doesn’t offer a higher refresh rate, just touch input.However this is more of a business and school laptop and for that it excels. If you need this for work, movies, etc and want the best looking Windows laptop you can get a hold of with a display that excels at movie content, that can handle some light gaming with great battery life and the ability to expand when needed, this is a good choice.

It’s been a while since I’ve shopped for a Windows computer, so I was excited to see how far along PCs have come both in hardware and software.The Dell XPS has an established name in the computer industry that’s as well known as a certain fruit company’s MacBook Pro moniker and it’s synonymous with being a premium and top of the line consumer option, ideally designed for creators and creativity in a similar sense.The packaging is superb and the build quality of this laptop is impeccable from the moment you pick it up and open it up. Great processor - literally a step down from the highest Intel Core i9 offering - yet still offering more than enough speed and performance for the average consumer or even creatives. The Intel Arc is a huge step up over the Intel Iris offered on other Dell models, boosting graphics performance by over 50%. 16GB of RAM is the minimum that I would purchase a Windows computer with, due to the higher memory resource usage by the operating system. Anything less than that and you’re really making a short term purchase that’s likely going to need to be upgraded in a couple of year due to performance degradation. Storage is okay at 512GB. I’d say 512GB is middle-of-the-road for premium PC’s though (with 256GB SSD being expected as a minimum).What was a little disappointing? It started with the screen. While I can appreciate a matte display - which is less likely to show glare and reflection, the screen is essentially 1080p/Full HD. Some people will claim that at 1920 x 1200 this laptop’s resolution is better than 1080p, and technically this is true, but the reality is the screen is a 16:10 aspect ratio so it’s actually the same quality, but the panel itself is taller (top to bottom) than 1080p. It’s kind of like when you go to the movies and before the movie starts, the curtain over the screen shifts slightly to show more screen up and down but the side to side stays the same. It would’ve been nice to see Dell put a OLED on this and/or a higher resolution (UHD/4k resolution) to really make photos and videos really pop and make text richer, especially since it’s catering to creatives. This model is also not touchscreen which seems like an odd omission seeing how much Microsoft and most of their PC partners/OEMs push touchscreen as an advantage of a PC over say a fruit competitor’s products.For work, I do a fair amount of web meetings (usually thru Zoom and WebEx) so I was curious to see what the web cam, mic and speaker systems were like. The 720p webcam (less than 1MP) was surprisingly bad. It looked washed out and murky almost like there was something maybe obstructing the camera. It was not as sharp as the devices I usually attend web meetings on for sure. And this could be something to consider if you’re using it for school and you may be attending classes virtually. The speakers were okay, but the audio sounded really flat and thin. The speakers are louder than expected, but there’s not a lot of bass response and ultimately the speakers leave you wanting a fuller, more robust sound.Wrapping up: port-wise this laptop includes a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, SD card reader and 3.5mm headphone jack and 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports on the opposite side of the laptop. Dell is generous enough to include a USB-A/HDMI dongle, which was an appreciated addition. Included wireless connectivity is the aging Wi-Fi 6, instead of the newer Wi-Fi 6E standard. Battery life was between 10-12 hours, depending on usage, which for most is easily a full work or school day. Weight is under 4.5 pounds, but heavier than I’m used to, so it was a slight adjustment. Heat was minimal and often not noticeable.All in all, I’d say the laptop is good (3.5/5 so I’m rounding up to 4), but there were definitely some interesting compromises that keep it from being great.

Great processor - literally a step down from the highest Intel Core i9 offering - yet still offering more than enough speed and performance for the average consumer or even creatives. The Intel Arc is a huge step up over the Intel Iris offered on other Dell models, boosting graphics performance by over 50%. 16GB of RAM is the minimum that I would purchase a Windows computer with, due to the higher memory resource usage by the operating system. Anything less than that and you’re really making a short term purchase that’s likely going to need to be upgraded in a couple of year due to performance degradation. Storage is okay at 512GB. I’d say 512GB is middle-of-the-road for premium PC’s though (with 256GB SSD being expected as a minimum).What was a little disappointing? It started with the screen. While I can appreciate a matte display - which is less likely to show glare and reflection, the screen is essentially 1080p/Full HD. Some people will claim that at 1920 x 1200 this laptop’s resolution is better than 1080p, and technically this is true, but the reality is the screen is a 16:10 aspect ratio so it’s actually the same quality, but the panel itself is taller (top to bottom) than 1080p. It’s kind of like when you go to the movies and before the movie starts, the curtain over the screen shifts slightly to show more screen up and down but the side to side stays the same. It would’ve been nice to see Dell put a OLED on this and/or a higher resolution (UHD/4k resolution) to really make photos and videos really pop and make text richer, especially since it’s catering to creatives. This model is also not touchscreen which seems like an odd omission seeing how much Microsoft and most of their PC partners/OEMs push touchscreen as an advantage of a PC over say a fruit competitor’s products.For work, I do a fair amount of web meetings (usually thru Zoom and WebEx) so I was curious to see what the web cam, mic and speaker systems were like. The 720p webcam (less than 1MP) was surprisingly bad. It looked washed out and murky almost like there was something maybe obstructing the camera. It was not as sharp as the devices I usually attend web meetings on for sure. And this could be something to consider if you’re using it for school and you may be attending classes virtually. The speakers were okay, but the audio sounded really flat and thin. The speakers are louder than expected, but there’s not a lot of bass response and ultimately the speakers leave you wanting a fuller, more robust sound.Wrapping up: port-wise this laptop includes a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, SD card reader and 3.5mm headphone jack and 2x Thunderbolt 4 ports on the opposite side of the laptop. Dell is generous enough to include a USB-A/HDMI dongle, which was an appreciated addition. Included wireless connectivity is the aging Wi-Fi 6, instead of the newer Wi-Fi 6E standard. Battery life was between 10-12 hours, depending on usage, which for most is easily a full work or school day. Weight is under 4.5 pounds, but heavier than I’m used to, so it was a slight adjustment. Heat was minimal and often not noticeable.All in all, I’d say the laptop is good (3.5/5 so I’m rounding up to 4), but there were definitely some interesting compromises that keep it from being great.

As for the SSD storage capabilities, the base model comes with one of the two slots filled and the second slot is available for an additional drive. Numerous sized drives are available at order time for either or both slots from 512GB to 1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB and 8 TB. Not sure about the warranty aspect of adding hard drives after the purchase, so you will have to verify if that is warranty-safe. The display is also optionally available in an OLED 3.5K (3456 x 2160) InfinityEdge, Touch, Anti-Reflective, 400 Nit display that will also require the selection of one of the NVIDIA graphics cards to drive it.Regarding connections, there are two Thunderbolt 4 connectors, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 connector, a 3.5 mm headphone/microphone combo connector and an SD card slot. That’s it. The power connection will occupy one of the Thunderbolt connectors, so there is not a lot left. The laptop also comes with a mini-doc in the form of a small, USB-C connector leading to an adapter that sports a USB-A v3.0 and an HDMI v2.0 connection to displace the USB-C port. So, without some form of larger, more capable dock, supporting multiple monitors, external storage, corded mice or keyboards will be kind of tough to accommodate.Regarding game play via Steam, using medium–high graphics settings, “Rocket League” performed well above average at around 160 – 180 FPS even with the base-level Intel GPU installed on this model. Despite games not being the target audience for this device, gameplay was mostly fairly fluid and satisfying. One other observation was that in playing another game, some page tearing was evident on the laptop’s display when a second monitor was attached via the small, included dongle and the HDMI connector (optimal user settings may not have been arrived at yet for the game). When the dongle and the second monitor was detached, the page tearing disappeared. I am not sure what that means, but it makes me worry that the graphics capability of the Intel GPU may not be as vigorous as I had hoped.Other features to be aware of, are the options for logging in, which include typing a password or pin on the backlit keyboard, a manually accessed fingerprint detector or a camera with automatic face detection technology, your choice. Regarding the physical specifications, the weight comes in at 4.2 pounds for this version and is 13.57” x 9.06” x 0.71” and made from machined aluminum with a carbon fiber palm rest. The power supply is rated at 130 watts and the laptop’s battery contains 6 cells with 86 W/h capacity.Positives:I like this laptop a lot and I can see it taking the place of my older Dell Precision model as my “daily driver” for everything but my CAD software which still likes the Quadro graphics hardware built into the Precision model. I won’t miss lugging around my old and heavy 17” laptop and its massive 240-watt power brick.The sound quality of this laptop is surprisingly good with the inclusion of two woofers and two tweeters. The speed is snappy and the laptop is very quiet while using it for moderate tasks. There are two internal cooling fans on the bottom of the unit ready and waiting to blow some cool breezes onto the internals when under processing stress. There is not a lot of included software other than a trial version of Office and one year of McAffee antivirus protection.Gaming is decent with higher FPS yields than expected and normal office applications run very well. An external monitor used with the included dongle worked well with the game Rainbow Six Siege. Be sure to check your games or other major important application’s requirements.Cons:Not a lot of connections available on this model, so a corded docking station with more expansion is a necessity. The edges of the lower part of the laptop are very sharp and for those with larger hands, it is uncomfortable on the palms as you are typing. An additional wrist rest placed in front is helpful to keep that edge from digging in to your palms. Maybe when the warranty has expired, I can take one of my metal-working files to the edge. In the meantime, I’ll just use it to compute and peel the occasional vegetable.

I used a USB C based "hub" that has 2 USB A ports, an HDMI port, SD card readers, and an audio jack (mostly because I already had it).I found it interesting that it has a full size SD card reader slot, but given the use of OneDrive and Google Drive, I don't think I'll ever find a use for it.One nice touch is the charging light that appears on the side while it's charging (which goes out once it's done).In summary, this is a decent laptop, especially if you can get it for a good price. If comparable laptops are lighter or have longer battery life when gaming, I'd go that direction instead.

For a 15" laptop, this is barely larger than a 14" corporate laptop thanks to the incredibly thin bezels around the display. The keyboard does not have a 10 key, but to me that's excusable given the incredibly small size of this machine. The display is a 16:10 1200p display that gets "bright enough" for business use but has some backlight bleed in dark screens and doesn't support HDR. Personally I think 1200p is "just fine" on a midrange laptop and suits the pricepoint very well.Performance-wise, I am almost blown-away by the XPS 15. The Arc A370M GPU is decent enough for eSports gaming and maybe even some AAA titles at reduced settings. I have played a few games of Overwatch 2 using the built-in GPU and I was able to get console-esque FPS at native res and medium settings. What really impressed me with the XPS 15 was the CPU performance and thermal design. Dell has managed to configure this laptop to hit the full 115W TDP in Turbo PL2 without having fans that scream like absolute banshees. Benchmark and gaming performance was consistently 15% higher than my other 13700H laptop.A great feature of many of the new 13th gen laptops has been the inclusion of ThunderBolt 4 ports and the XPS 15 is no exception. I connected an eGPU dock to the XPS 15 easily and enjoyed near-desktop PC level performance. In OW2, my desktop (5.1ghz all core 10600K + 7900 XT) stays pegged at 240fps at 1440p, and the XPS 15 was consistently hovering around 200 FPS with the 7900 XT in the eGPU dock. That's really kinda crazy to me given the losses you expect from an eGPU. This setup (with a 6800 XT) will be a second gaming machine in our house and I'm thrilled that the XPS 15 can meet that need instead of building an entire desktop rig for light use.In previous reviews I've knocked Dell for having a ton of bloatware. While the XPS 15 does have McAfee and some Dell software preinstalled, it was super easy to remove (unlike the appx version of McAfee they've had on some laptops I've used). Also, the MyDell app was surprisingly functional for controlling the thermal/power settings. I'll give them a pass here.Two thumbs way up for this Dell XPS 15. It is a great device that is a great compromise between a powerful desktop replacement and compact road warrior, without feeling 'compromised.' Highly recommended.

The FHD 1920x1200 IPS 15.6” screen has a 100 sRBG Color range and a 500 nits brightness provides a pleasant screen to use in normal situations, I haven’t tried to use it much in the bright sunlight, but it seems like it would be passable, but not great. 16GB DDR5 Ram that is upgradeable as both channels are accessible, and you don’t have one soldered on like some other laptops out there. Speaking of upgrades, you can also add a second M.2 SSD to increase the 512GB storage as well. One of the most impressive features to me is the incredible sound this laptop has. It has a quad stereo set up with deep bass and great mids. The built in speakers have front facing drivers and bottom facing drivers that shoot out the bottom edges to help get that great sound. So far everything I have mentioned on this laptop is great, now there are a few negative things about it. First off, the 720p webcam feels like an industry substandard on a laptop of this price range. The images seem blown out and the dual mic set up is not that great either. Both of these would be good enough for your Teams meeting, but that is just about it. The windows Hello feature is enabled for both the fingerprint and camera. I only set up the camera and I find that it struggles to see me a lot of the time and I have to move closer or change my lighting for it to be effective. In the perfect light and distance, it works good though. Battery life should be better, but I have been getting a solid 9 or so hours with moderate use, when I use it a lot, such as watching YouTube videos, I have only seen about 6 hours or so. No Wi-Fi 6e on this guy either, so that was a bit of a disappointment. However, overall, this is a great laptop that provides powerful performance, quiet operation, a beautiful and sturdy design and it has not let me down no matter what type of office work I throw at it.

The chassis is the same finely crafted, CNC-machined, aluminum version that all of the other builds in this line use. Dell’s description calls out a carbon fiber wrist rest, and it appears legit rather than inexpensive plastic made to look like carbon fiber. The back-lit keyboard and track pad are the same on all builds, and the ports are also identical in variety and quantity, including two USB-C Thunderbolt 4, one USB-C Type 3.2, an SD-card slot, a headphone jack, and a wedge-shaped lock slot. Fit, finish, materials, and attention to detail are all top-shelf.The 2023 XPS line uses the same design and chassis build as the 2021 XPS that also resides in our household, but that isn’t a bad thing as it is a very sleek and stylish machine even though it weighs in at a little over 4 pounds, 2 ounces. The display, while not being of the touchscreen OLED variety, does offer good resolution and color, an anti-glare, matte-texture finish that virtually does away with annoying screen reflections, and uses less power than the OLED option for longer battery life. It still comes with a screen hinge that offers a lot of resistance, making it a bit difficult to open using just one thumb, and a well-defined cutout offering more grip would be something I would welcome, although this might be by design for those machines with touchscreens to keep the screen in place as you poke at it with your finger. The display almost fills the chassis lid with color and movement by having very narrow bezels on all four edges.Dell offers users three different ways to unlock the computer with facial recognition, a fingerprint reader integrated with the power button in the upper right corner of the keyboard, or the time-worn option of typing in a password. The spacious keyboard lacks only a ten-key number pad, but it’s doubtful anyone will miss it other than people that crunch a large quantity of digits, and the tactile feedback and spacing of the keys are perfect. The speakers consist of top-firing tweeters and woofers with additional ports for the woofers on the lower edge of the chassis bottom. Cooling intakes are on the bottom of the chassis, so use on a hard surface to keep these open for airflow is probably a good idea. Backlighting of the keyboard is evenly distributed and comes on immediately when your fingers first brush the keys or trackpad.This laptop comes with the home version of Windows 11 and a one-year subscription to McAfee LiveSafe is included. Microsoft Office on the other hand is only a five-day free “pass” which does allow you to keep any documents created during this time, unless you choose the “buy” option for Microsoft 365 which gives you a free one-month trial. If you are familiar with Windows you shouldn’t have any surprises on this machine. Wireless connectivity is Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax).The Dell XPS line for 2023 offers many variations for a variety of needs and this particular spec serves up a nice mix of performance and features at a more than acceptable price point for an offering from what many would call the premier personal computer maker.

I wish more manufacturers would do this as a standard practice.IO-wise you get one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port with DisplayPort, A 3.5mm headphone / microphone combo jack, a full-size SD card slot, and 2 more USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (Thunderbolt) ports.All of these specs make for a VERY nice experience and I am very happy with how the machine performs for the most part (uninstalling McAfee helped a lot). It's build quality is absolutely top notch which is always very important to me. I would expect a bit more out of the 6 cell 86Wh battery than I'm getting considering this is a non-OLED FHD+ display, but it's not a deal-breaker for me.I wanted this configuration SPECIFICALLY because of the Intel Arc GPU. Intel obviously has a lot of catching up to do in the discrete GPU space and they've already done a lot with driver updates along the way to provide some encouraging results. That said Arc is not without issues and if you don't want to deal with anything that might arise due to a "new kid on the block" graphics card I suggest you opt for one of the NVIDIA 40 Series options.The one thing that doesn't quite make sense to me is the pricing. There are machines out there with 1440P or even 2160P OLED displays that are comparably priced. Some even come with a 1TB storage drive instead of (what I consider to be a bare minimum these days) 512GB. To be fair, I'm pretty sure the overall build quality and user experience won't be XPS 15-tier, but saving money is more important for many people.To that end, right now (08/21/2023) this exact same machine is $200 less ($1299) directly from Dell so If you are planning to buy from BestBuy make sure to request a price match.All in all this is a very nice machine and I will gladly use it for probably a good long while.
