Ah, the smell of a fresh ground coffee that is immediately brewed. Heavenly!Warning: Please make sure the top hopper is clicked into position so it won't move - if it is loose in any way you'll likely need to dump the beans out and to ensure that no beans have leaked out - my first grind had the grinding stopped because the hopper had slipped out of position - even though I thought I had felt it click. After I found how it feels to be secured, the grinding went on as desired. This unit is a bit pricey, but it is a high quality item that is worth the money. You will truly enjoy the ground coffee aroma and the resulting brewed coffee flavor. This is a serious consumer machine!

Doesn't Grind Fine Enough For Espresso IMO

Even on the finest grind setting it's still too coarse in my opinion. It's a shame because I like it otherwise. I have an inexpensive Capresso EC Pro that comes with a pressurized double shot portafilter and an unpressurized single shot. I've only been able to get it to work if I do a double grind-double tamp. The only way I can get it to work with the pressurized basket is to grind about 2/3 full (around 7g), tamp firmly, grind again to fill it the rest of the way and tamp firmly again. If I just grind directly into the portafilter filling it all the way and then tamp, it runs out way too fast. I tried the unpressurized portafilter, and it was a complete failure. The display is unnecessary for espresso grinding, but I do like the ability to program the grind cycle. I programmed it to grind out 7g with each press of the button. It grinds consistently for drip, but not for French press. It probably works better with the matching DeLonghi Dedica machine. I'll probably sell it and get a Breville as I don't want to spend over $200 on a grinder, but I want the ability to achieve a finer grind. Live and learn.

Great looks and function.

I already own a Rancilio Rocky grinder, but I was in the market for a second grinder for my vacation home. The First thing I noticed about the Dedica was how much lighter it seemed than my Rocky. I looked it up and confirmed my observation. The Rocky weighs about 15 lbs while the Dedica weighs 7 lbs.As I unpacked the Dedica, I was impressed with the aesthetics of this unit. The main body is stainless steel with a chrome plated plastic top and a black plastic bottom. The second thing I inspected was the grinding mechanism. This appears to be stainless steel and very rugged. The central burr adjusts up and down to change the size of the gap between the burrs and therefore the size of the coffee grounds. The control for grind size is on the top of the grinder between the grinder body and the bean container. It is well marked and easy to operate. My Rocky is very low tech. Select the grind size, add the beans and turn on the grinder. When enough beans have been ground, turn off the switch. The Dedica offers more automation. After selecting the grind size, I can choose how many cups of coffee I plan to brew and the Dedica will grind a quantity of coffee appropriate for that number of cups. Additionally, I can select one of three "strength" levels. I assume this alters the amount of coffee that is ground for each cup, therefore resulting in what I recall to be a higher "throw weight"...basically the ratio of ounces of coffee to fluid ounces of water. The goal is to achieve a particular level of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in the brewed coffee. From the SCAA Golden Cup standard..."Coffee shall exhibit a brew strength, measured in Total Dissolved Solids, of 11.5 to 13.5 grams per liter, corresponding to 1.15 to 1.35 "percent" on the SCAA Brewing Control Chart, resulting from a solubles extraction yield of 18 to 22 percent*."Regardless of all of that, the bottom line is that you can adjust this to suit your taste for various varieties and roast profiles of the coffees that you and others like. This adjustment is a really good one to pair with the "number of cups" selector, since the two are inextricably linked. Otherwise, you'd have to adjust the cup count up or down to achieve the same result. Either way, this is likely to involve some trial and error over time to get this set to your personal taste preference. There are two options for catching the ground coffee as it exits the grinder. The cylindrical ground coffee container that comes with the Dedica, fits snugly under the output port on the grinder and has a rubber cap so you can grind more than you want to use immediately and then cover the remaining grounds (restricting oxygen and therefore oxidation of the freshly ground coffee). Presumably you would only do this for a few minutes or hours, not a few days. Ideally, you want to grind fresh each time before you brew. In addition to this ground coffee container, the Dedica comes with a Filer Holder Accessory which is neatly stored in the base of the unit behind where the ground coffee container is normally installed. You pull on the tab of a plastic drawer and out comes the drawer with the filter holder in it. The filter holder can be installed under the exit port from the grinder. Then a portafilter from an espresso machine can be directly installed in the filter holder allowing a direct grind of espresso grind coffee into the portafilter. This is very nice and seemingly well engineered. Though I haven't tried it with a portafilter, so I haven't done a full test of this feature.I experimented with the grind sizes a bit. It seems to do well with both fine and coarse grinds. I suspect DeLonghi uses higher RPMs on the machine in order to reduce the size of the motor which reduces both cost and weight. I could hear the difference in RPMs immediately as compared to my Rocky grinder. I find that both my Rocky and this Dedica make a fair amount of noise when grinding, so you might want to keep that and the sleep habits of other household occupants in mind before you fire up the grinder in the morning. The Dedica sound is higher pinched and may be a bit louder. At one point, I had the coffee bean container on the machine, but not properly twist-locked in place. The display on the grinder alerted me to that fact and kept me from running the grinder in a potentially dangerous mode. That is a nice safety feature. It also detects whether or not the ground coffee container is in place and prevents operation if it is not properly placed. That helps avoid a mess.I have only had the Dedica a short time, so I can't comment on reliability or longevity, but overall, I give it a thumbs up for a $199 burr grinder. If you want a decent grinder with a few useful bells and whistles at a more reasonable price than something like my $350 Rancilio Rocky or one of the other expensive high-end grinders, the Dedica is definitely worth considering.

It really changes my taste of a good coffee

I didnt think before about how much difference could be the taste of a coffee from ground coffee beans. I love coffee, but I am not an expert. A friend of mine persuaded me to buy a good coffee bean and I have got this Delonghi Grinder, which I found really easy to use, and the coffee really has a different taste and smell. The setup up was extremelly easy, just put the hopper on the top of the grinder and insert the grind chamber and thats it. The grinder has 18 grind settings, 6 each for Fine (1-6), Medium (7-12), and Coarse (13-18). It also has three “Strength” settings, which determines how heavy a grind goes into each cup. Light strength will produce fewer grams of coffee grounds, while the Medium and Full settings will grind more grams per cup. This allows fine-tuning for individual tastes, and proper timing of espresso shots. If you are making a double shot, you will have to grind one cup, wait a second or two, and press the grind button a second time to fill the portafilter. However, the Strength setting still works with the portafilter attachment in place, so you can fine-tune how many grams of grounds per shotIt's well built. The controls are straightforward. You will learn according to the grind size, number of cups and strength you will need for your own taste, a cool thing that I like is that it remembers your settings even if you power it off. For someone that makes the same amount of coffee every morning, it is an advantage.Good looking design. The stainless steel finish is beautiful and should blend in with any modern kitchen.Ability to set the number of cups. The DeLonghi grinds only the amount of beans that it needs based on how many cups you choose (up to 14 cups, shown on the digital display).Convenient grind chamber, it has a sealable cap so you can keep coffee fresh. So I tried what I was looking for, th expreso, it was great, I tasted a shot using the blade grinder (and DeLonghi espresso coffee maker) and thought all I taste is strong coffee. I tasted a shot of expresso after using the DeLonghi burr grinder and I was pleasently surprised. The unit can pour the coffee directly into the porta filter attachment. You can grind the coffee straight into the filter. It is very easy to clean, and the digital blue light display is really confortable for me.One thing that I noticed was that you have to make sure to lock correctly the hopper, to seat and secure forcing it a little bit until you hear a "click, otherwise it will be loose and not completely secure.Overall it is a wonderful product, that definitely has changed my concept of the taste of a good coffee...

Not Good For Espresso
2 June 2019

It looks nice, has a lot of features, and I really wanted to like this it. Unfortunately, this grinder does not grind finely enough for espresso in my opinion. I have a Capresso EC Pro semi-auto espresso machine that has a pressurized portafilter. This grinder should work with pressurized baskets. It may with DeLonghi machines, but it definitely doesn't with my Capresso. I bought this grinder because I wanted to grind directly into my portafilter. I tried numerous times to fill the portafilter and very firmly tamp the grounds, but the coffee just runs out way too fast and watery. The only way I've been able to get it to work is to fill the portafilter half way, tamp firmly, grind again, and then tamp a second time. You shouldn't have to do that. If you are buying this for espresso I wouldn't. You are better off with any of the Capresso Infinitys or one of the Breville espresso grinders. They "will" grind finely enough. If you are just buying a grinder for drip coffee this is a very nice machine.

Perfectly fresh ground coffee at home the way I wa
8 June 2017

I no longer have to choose what type of grind I want at the store. I can purchase my favorite coffee beans, bring them home and then decide do I want drip, Espresso or percolated coffee. The best feature of the DEDICA coffee Grinder is it’s stainless steel grinding wheels. Not a blender blade like my old version, but true Grinder wheels like in a pepper mill. The grinding action releases the true flavor of the bean without pulverizing it.A true on/off switch on the bottom, right side of the unit guarantees the unit draws no phantom power when plugged in but not in use. The DEDICA does the rest.If you want really fresh brewed coffee, only grind what you need. There is a special attachment conveniently stowed away behind the receiving canister. It can be used to grind straight into the espresso porta filter handle. I’d love to see an attachment to grind straight into my K-CUP reusable filters. If you want, you can fill the hopper and grind as needed. Or, what I might do, is grind enough for my morning brew then close the air tight receiver canister and save it for my dinner shot.Best feature of all is the perfect cup of coffee I get from my fresh ground coffee beans.

Solid Simple Powerful Design
10 June 2017

This coffee grinder made our other grinder look like a toy. Not only was this coffee grinder more powerful, it also ground the coffee in a way that the grounds felt silky smooth. I made a latte and the difference in smoothness was so obvious you could actually 'feel' the smoothness of the coffee, and it tasted far better too. The manual is adequate to cover the simple operation. One nice feature but slightly confusing thing is that this grinder comes with an attachment that stows inside the base area. This attachment allows you to use the coffee grounds holder from another product which is also a great product called the DeLonghi Espresso Machine. You use the handled grounds holder in place of the grounds collection jar that comes with this machine. It's nice in that if you have both machines you would be able to use the handled grounds holder; and you simply can move the handled holder over to your espresso machine - beautiful. But at first it is not clear that you simply need the other machine to get the 'double-duty' handled grounds holder. The use of the machine is really easy to set your amount, fineness of grind and strength of brew. A beautiful LCD screen is easy to read. It is also a breeze to clean since you can remove the upper burr. It also comes with a cleaning tool. A safety feature will not allow you to grind coffee unless the jar holding the beans is properly seated. This is a solid and excellent device, well designed and looks beautiful too.

Very Versatile Grinder
14 June 2017

Whenever you're thinking about making coffee, typically you want to go the easy route, as we all just want coffee NOW! More often than not, the grinder gets overlooked. No-one will be overlooking this DeLonghi Dedica Grinder! This thing is a monster. A good looking, well thought out monster! Stainless steel and black plastic construction, with a stainless steel adjustable burr grinder, packing a punch. This grinder means business, but does it in a very thoughtful and butler-like way. What I mean by that is that the grinder itself is very robust and does a great job grinding beans, but it's the 'sophistication' with which it does it.The burr is adjustable for different size of coffee grounds, from coarse to fine, and there is also an adjustment for the amount of ... MoreWhenever you're thinking about making coffee, typically you want to go the easy route, as we all just want coffee NOW! Stainless steel and black plastic construction, with a stainless steel adjustable burr grinder, packing a punch. This grinder means business, but does it in a very thoughtful and butler-like way. What I mean by that is that the grinder itself is very robust and does a great job grinding beans, but it's the 'sophistication' with which it does it.The burr is adjustable for different size of coffee grounds, from coarse to fine, and there is also an adjustment for the amount of coffee that you want to grind each time, measured in cups (how many cups of coffee do you wish to make, not full cups of ground coffee!).The machine is relatively quiet as well. Sure, it's not silent, but it's not as harsh and abrasive as I thought it would be.The top 'hopper' is plastic, with a hole in the bottom for the beans to drain into the grinder. It has a nice rubber and stainless steel lid. You pour your beans in the top, and then shut the lid. Please, please, please make sure that the hopper is securely fastened to the grinder. I turned it to the first 'click' and set the grinder going. It automatically shut off. Tried again, it shut off. Tried again, again, it shut off. The vibration from the grinder was causing the hopper to spin, and in turn it activated the auto shut-off feature on the grinder. I ended up needing to be a little more forceful with the hopper when locking it in place. I was just being cautious with it being plastic. And to that end, do not, I repeat, do not lift up the hopper with unground beans in it. When trying to reseat the hopper securely, I accidentally lifted it up, and beans went everywhere. Into the burr of the grinder, onto the counter, everywhere! You have been warned! The collection vessel for the grounds is clear plastic with a rubber and stainless steel sealable lid. That means if you choose to grind 4 cups worth of coffee and then only use two of them, the rest of the grounds remain stored and sealed till the next time you need them.Cleaning the machine is really quite easy. A damp cloth gets rid of most of the grounds, and then a quick blast of canned air cleans out the other parts. This is a nicely featured machine with many different options of grind, quantity and strength. The stainless steel and black casing is very attractive on the countertop. And it was good to see the auto shut-off safety feature in action, and the notification on the LCD screen on the machine.I would heartily recommend this grinder to anyone who is interested in a slightly more higher end model of grinder.

Why Did I wait so long?
29 August 2019

Wow! I can not even begin to express how much I love this coffee grinder. It is like seriously where have you been my entire life and why did I not get this sooner? I absolutely love coffee and would just by the ground coffee because I had tried many coffee grinders that just didn't seem to work well for me. However, this coffee grinder is a total game changer for me. I can now enjoy the coffee of my choosing because I have this awesome machine that grinds the beans fast. I love that is has a 14 cup capability and also comes with a 14 cup storage so I can grind more at once and use it for the week. Whats even better is how easy it is to clean because the upper burr comes off. I would definitely recommend this machine to anyone who loves coffee but wants the fresh coffee beans.

looks great, quiet, lots of settings

This is a high end coffee grinder, with lots of options.Looks: Looks great on the counter. Stainless steel and black rubber make up most of it, with some plastic parts. It has excellent build quality and feels very well made.Features: 18 different grind settings, with everything from French press to espresso and everything in between. The LCD screen makes it easy to set brew strength and cups. It also lets you know if any of the parts are not set in there correctly (IE the bean hopper or the grind bin). You can grind into the "normal" bin, or directly into a portafilter (the part that goes directly into an espresso machine, rather than transferring it over, the grinder comes with an attachment to grind into one of these, and the attachment fits inside of the ... MoreThis is a high end coffee grinder, with lots of options.Looks: Looks great on the counter. You can grind into the "normal" bin, or directly into a portafilter (the part that goes directly into an espresso machine, rather than transferring it over, the grinder comes with an attachment to grind into one of these, and the attachment fits inside of the grinder for storage). The "normal" bin also has an airtight lid with a rubber stopper so you can store grinds if you grind too much at once.Useability: The grinder is easy to use. Simply turn it on, use the dial to select the number of cups you, bush the strength button for either light, normal or strong, and push the "play" button. The grinder will automatically grind as much as it needs to in order to get the correct number of grounds.Cons: It is a little messy, as is any grinder. There is not much static electricity build up, which makes dumping the grinds into the coffee maker easy. I do feel that it grinds too much coffee for your settings. If it set it to "normal" and 9 cups for my coffee pot, it grinds a bit too much I feel.Other than that, this is an excellent grinder.
