An elevated home espresso experience!

The De'Longhi Specialista Arte represents the perfect blend of automation with manual hands-on input in my opinion. I am appreciative of the automation of the grinder with settings adjustable for coarseness of the grind along with dosage of the grind (settings are recommended in the included booklet based on the darkness of your roasted beans). I also appreciate the easy temperature selection that also comes with recommendations in the quick start booklet included in the box. These are both experiences that enjoy being hands on about and thus this machine is a winner with me in general. The build quality and size of this espresso machine is outstanding. As you can see in my pictures, the machine tucks perfectly into my kitchen counter corner without protruding overly much or consuming a bunch of forward counter space. The water tank is pretty low profile and sits on the back of the machine, so I only have to pull the machine forward when the water needs filling (the machine notifies you with a specific light at the front of the machine when it needs fillings). Altogether, the plastics are high quality, the stainless surfaces yield an extremely high-end look without being overly gaudy, and the heftiness of the machine down to even the included frothing pitcher are a testament to the quality present here.Getting the proper grind, dosage, tamp, and temperature of my espresso took me a couple of tries to be sure. The pressure indicator on the machine was helpful in letting me know how I have done tamping my espresso pucks in the portafilter. The grind and tamping plastic guide that screws onto the portafilter is a necessary item in this process and may be the only aspect of the entire assemblage of the De'Longhi Specialista Arte that feels a little low on quality. I understand its necessity behind having a neat pour of grinds into the portafilter and in assisting you in the tamping process as a sort of edge guide, but it just feels out of place in the whole set up.Aside from this one small complaint, I have felt nothing but joy and excitement with utilizing the Specialista Arte for my daily espresso-based beverage consumption. We have even found the hot water dispensing function to be greatly useful for hot chocolate in the evenings! It appears to dispense about 8-10oz of water when you are on the hot water setting, and since the machine warms up so quickly it is actually faster to prepare two hot chocolates for my wife and I then it is to use our electric kettle! This is a nice benefit of this machine.Altogether, if you are looking for a home espresso maker of high quality that fulfills its end of the marketing bargains, this is the one to get. I am impressed by the size, build quality, and beverage quality we are getting out of the Specialista Arte! Thanks for reading and hope this review helps you with your purchasing decision!

I actually found this machine somewhat intimidating as a result of my lack of knowledge and experience with this type of drink. Thankfully, it is genuinely easy to use, you just need to follow the quick start guide to the letter. After a few tries you start getting used to the process and are able to understand what it takes to customize your own drinks to your liking. The machine itself is beautifully designed, everything looks and feels quality and it has a relatively small footprint on the counter. I do wish it had an actual power button instead of using the OK button for power on and starting a brew in one button, and I understand wanting to keep the unit nice and clean looking by hiding the water tank on the back side but it makes refilling it much more difficult than necessary. Otherwise, it is top notch. It includes many accessories, cleaning tools, more than one filter size, the tamper and portafilter, a little rubber stand for them, and a mini pitcher for milk steaming. I was very surprised with how fast it does things, from grinding to steaming to brewing the espresso shots it’s all really quick. Most of the time spent using it is in the preparation and cleaning. Setting it up is fairly involved, requiring cleaning and priming the pieces and the machine, and following the instructions for determining your water hardness level. Once that’s all done it’s time to start brewing, and thankfully it also has detailed guides on how to best do so, with tips on what might be wrong it things don’t look right. I am enjoying experimenting with different drinks now that I have more options than a straight plain coffee at home. It a high end machine intended for the people who enjoy coffee and the art of making the perfect cup, and it does so beautifully.

Even if you are unfamiliar with their machines, or any espresso machine, I would consider it easy to use. The instructions are easy to follow and the buttons, knobs and center pressure gauge on the front of the machine are easy to understand and figure out.Regarding set up, you will add whole espresso beans in the top container, add water to the water tank in the back of the machine and run a few priming cycles through the machine to prep it for first time use. Once set up is complete and the first water in the machine has been primed and tested using the included water hardness test strip, you’re ready for your journey to become an at home barista. You will want to adjust the grind hopper for the coarseness of the grind which I recommend starting around the middle, or “5”, grind setting and the dosing setting the same in the middle and adjust from there depending on what taste you prefer. Using the double espresso filter basket in the portafilter and selecting the x2 button on the front of the machine, connect the Dosing Funnel (which was new to me on this model) to the portafilter and insert it into the coffee grinder outlet pushing back firmly to initiate the automatic grind. Once the espresso beans are ground, remove the portafilter and place it on the included taping mat gently taping the sides to evenly distribute the ground coffee into the filter. Use the included tamper to tamp the ground coffee and remove the dosing funnel. Insert the portafilter into the brewing outlet on the right side turning it firmly to seat it in the machine before brewing. Use the knob to select whether you are brewing an espresso shot or an Americano. Using the other button, select what temperature you prefer your brew at, place either espresso cups or a coffee cup onto the grill under the brew output and press OK to start brewing. There is a steam wand on the right side of the machine which you can use to steam and froth milk for your coffee drinks which works great and is easy to clean just like the rest of the machine.I have used several other espresso machines over the years and prefer the De’Longhi machines over all other models I have used. In my opinion, they make a statement aesthetically in any kitchen, feel more durable and, most importantly, make a better shot of espresso and an amazing Americano. I have always recommended De’Longhi machines to anyone in the market for small kitchen appliances and especially their espresso machines.

Bottom Line: This unit strikes a good balance between simplicity and versatility, turning the user into their own home barista.Review: Out of the box, there are a lot of buttons and settings, and so it does take a good read of the instructions to familiarize oneself with the machine. For coffee grinding, there are eight settings, and the manual provides good instructions on how fine you should grind the beans depending on the roast. There's also a dial to select the size of the dose, which may vary slightly also depending on the bean. Once set, grinding is as easy as connecting an attachment to the portafilter and pushing it under the grinder. The unit comes with a little rubber pad that holds the portafilter and tamper when you tamp down the shot. This potaflter is a little different than the ones I've used before, as it provides extraction from both the left and right sides (rather than one single tip right down the center). This allows for double shots into two cups (with attached stand to raise them up) or both sides can be emptied into one regular sized mug. So far, I've found that this dual tip portafilter provides a more consistent shot than single-tipped ones. When ready for the shot, there are essentially three settings: espresso (just the coffee shot), Americano, which delivers the shot plus a pre-measured amount of water, which comes out of a water spigot next to the portafilter, and a water option, which just delivers water. We tend to make Americanos and add extra water, and this works very well. The unit also includes a steam wand for steaming milk for lattes.Although we like this machine quite a bit, I have two minor issues. First, because of the double tipped portafilter and water spigot, you do need to get your mug centered just perfectly under all three so you don't miss. This is not a huge issue, but it is something I think about everything I use the machine. Second, the steamer cup is on the smaller side; I wish it were just a little bit bigger.

Combining a grinder and the espresso maker in a very tight footprint not only saved up a lot of my counter space, but also made this a one-stop-job. The grind size and dosing ensures that I am getting a consistent amount of coffee every time, and the inclusion of a dosing funnel helps to keep things clean. A tamper and a tamping “mat” or holder is also there to further streamline the process. Thus the whole process simplifies to 1. Grind coffee using the grind size, dosing, and shot size control, tamp it down, and then get the portafilter attached and start brewing. Of course I needed to fill-up the detachable water tank first. The design of La Specialista is clean without looking mundane. I wish the use of “chrome-accented” plastic was less, but overall it didn’t look too out of place in my kitchen. The knobs are gnarled and look premium and the buttons, though not very tactile, were good enough. An analog “manometer” shows the pressure of the espresso pump. Overall it’s a well designed appliance, and I only wish more metal parts were used instead of shiny plastic. The La Specialista comes with a handy assortment of accessories. The metal portafilter comes with 2 basket sizes, each “bottomless” type. However the portafilter itself is spouted like a traditional one. For dosing tamping, the aforementioned tamper is quite heavy-duty, and the dosing funnel is easy to put on-or-off. The tamping mat is actually small and is more for hoding things together. Furthermore, a filter cleaning tip is also included. The nice thing is there’s a small cubby on the top to store some of these accessories and help keep the items tidy. The detachable water filter holds around 2.5 liter of water, but does not include a filter. A water hardness strip is there to help reconfigure the machine’s cleaning cycle with the water in the particular area.No home espresso machine is complete without a frother and La Specialista does that part graciously. The special frother wand supposedly makes latte art easy, but I’m yet to master that skill. A frothing jug is included to make steamed milk when I’m in need of some latte or cappuccino. The controls are mostly straight-forward and intuitive, except the “OK” button - I would rather have it labeled something like “Brew” or “Start”. A power button in the side keeps it awake when needed - I rarely turned it off since I started using it daily. Apart from the grinder controls, there’s a button to select from 3 levels of water temperature, and a dial to select between Espresso, Americano, and Hot Water. The dial can also be used to start the descaling cycle. A separate button operates the steam wand. As for indicators, 2 lights are there to indicate empty water tank, or descaling reminder respectively. And apart from the portafilter for coffee, a separate small spout, which is unfortunately unmoveable, is there for hot water. This helps with making Americano very convenient, and doubles as a hot water dispenser when I need some for tea.As for operation and performance, except the typical pump house, the machine works quite fast. Once I was able to dial in the correct grind size, dosing and temperature, I was getting my espresso or americano really consistently. I needed a few trial and errors at the beginning, but that’s the experience you need to go through to get great tasting coffee. I made some cappuccino for my friends as well and that turned out pretty well. All in all, I am really pleased and satisfied with the La Specialista. It is definitely not the cheapest machine out there, but it provides a convenient package to upgrade the home barista skill. If espresso is the drink you’re after, this makes a lot of sense.

Just Great Flavorful Espresso
13 October 2022

As a coffee lover, and owner of different coffee machines, including an Automatic Espresso machine with 20 bars of pressure, I can attest that the De’Longhi La Specialista Espresso machine with its 15 bars of pressure extracts as much flavor as possible from my favorite coffee beans, producing rich and tasty espresso as well as other coffee beverages. I like the feeling of doing a semi-manual preparation of my coffee (as opposed to having an automatic machine): grinding the beans, tamping on the dosing funnel to make sure to get the right dose, and finally brewing the coffee. It feels like being a barista.- Pros: powerful, different grind levels, frothing, custom dose.- Cons: None so far.>> First UseFirst things first, reach out to the Quick Start Guide which ... MoreAs a coffee lover, and owner of different coffee machines, including an Automatic Espresso machine with 20 bars of pressure, I can attest that the De’Longhi La Specialista Espresso machine with its 15 bars of pressure extracts as much flavor as possible from my favorite coffee beans, producing rich and tasty espresso as well as other coffee beverages. I like the feeling of doing a semi-manual preparation of my coffee (as opposed to having an automatic machine): grinding the beans, tamping on the dosing funnel to make sure to get the right dose, and finally brewing the coffee. It feels like being a barista.- Pros: powerful, different grind levels, frothing, custom dose.- Cons: None so far.>> First UseFirst things first, reach out to the Quick Start Guide which contains colored pictures of step-by-step instructions to help you with getting your Espresso machine ready and your first coffee cup.As instructed, I took my time to use some detergent, clean and dry all the detachable components, and I also wiped the different areas in the machine itself. I added water to the tank and made sure that the water sensor was properly positioned (there is a huge label attached to the side of the tank with that warning.) Before starting the first cleaning cycle, make sure that you have a container underneath the hot water spout, which is different than the steam wand used when frothing. I mentioned this because the drawing in the Quick Start Guide shows a water container underneath the steam wand, which you image made do the wrong thing (and spill some water.) Anyways, just some emphasis on getting the machine ready for your first brew. For the first brew, I first selected Espresso and x2, as I was using the x2 filter cup, and selected right Dose and Grind levels (according to the Roast Chart in the Quick Start Guide) for the coffee beans I was to use. Added coffee beans. I was careful to ground a little and tamp a little, to make sure that I got the right amount of coffee in the filter cup. After several uses, I know that three “grind” cycles (three pushes) seem to fill the filter to the appropriate level. Once I got the right amount of coffee, I placed it in the portafilter in its correct position underneath the brewing unit, secured it and just pressed OK to get a nice perfect brown aromatic liquid coming out of the brewing unit.Overall, extremely pleased with the De’Longhi La Specialista Espresso machine.>> Coffee makingMy main interest is espresso and I do some Americano sometimes. A good espresso cup takes a couple of minutes to produce, but worth the time and effort prepare the coffee and clean the utensils. I usually use dark roast as well as medium roast to get different tastes, each time I brew, the results are great, medium roasted or dark roasted, I can taste “real” coffee. I also mix medium and dark roasted beans, just need to do some experiments which one of the Grind and Dose levels to set the machine to for optimal results, but so far the taste of this combination has been insane. So, perhaps this will become my main Espresso coffee machine for the near future.I also tried americano brewing which produces an extremely tasty americano, but that could still be a little too strong for some palates. Perhaps this is not recommended, but on those occasions, I just brew espresso then I add boiling or warm water to it (depending on who is drinking – some like their coffee warm or even cold) and get a less strong coffee for them.>> Other notesOn the good side:- It has a small accessory storage on the top, where you can keep the other filter or both if you need to, plus the little brush and cleaning needle.- I can use it with coffee grinded on an external burr grinder. This is very useful if I have guests at home and there is someone who only drinks decaffeinated, I just prepare a small batch of decaffeinated coffee for them on the side without worrying to empty and clean the De’Longhi La Specialista beans container (and keep it caffeinated all the time.)- Adding milk foam to your coffee is as easy as it gets. I seldom drink coffee with anything added to it, but my wife and some friends love a good mix of coffee and milk, and I have impressed them already.- I found that some people find the espresso produced by this machine “too” strong (yeah! I like it that way), in such cases there is always the chance to add water. On the not so good side (well somehow expected due to not being an Automatic Espresso machine):- It gets a little messy. This is expected, though, since you have to manually tamp the coffee with the coffee tamper into the coffee filter before brewing. All this will inevitably cause some coffee residue to be left around, in the tamper, dosing funnel, and other components. I initially placed the La Specialista on a table covered with a white fabric and after a few cycles, coffee particles could be notices all around. I ended up placing paper towels on the table to use for the tampers and other removable parts.- Another inconvenience, also expected, is that you need to clean the filter cup after each use.- Filters are hard to exchange. A filter is hard pressed in the portafilter, and it takes some effort to pull it off.

Everything is here to be a Barista! The unit is very compact in comparison to some espresso coffee makers on the market. Some individuals might consider it somewhat of an entry level Espresso Machine, but it is quite a notch above and there is really nothing on the market to compare it to. It operates at 1600 watts and on 120 volts. It only weighs 21.5 lbs., is 14.37 w x 11.22 d x 15.87 h inches and fits nicely on a kitchen countertop under the wall cabinets. The cord is more than ample and not short, stubby, and frustrating. It even has a little storage area on top for all the small little utensils. The Specialista Arte Espresso Machine looks great and is made mostly in stainless steel and accented in black. It is amazingly easy to use, easy to clean, but best of all it makes a great beverage – espresso, coffee, or latte – whatever your pleasure. I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a nice Espresso Coffee Maker.

Love this espresso machine
24 May 2022

I love this espresso machine! I really love a hot cup of coffee first thing in the morning. We have been doing french press for a couple of years now as our main coffee making method, but sometimes I don't want a full pot of coffee so I love to have another option. Our previous espresso machine was very basic and manual, so I tended to not bother with it, and I had been toying with upgrading it for a while. One concern I had was our counter space - not getting too big of a machine. This one is a bit larger than our old machine but the size is still super reasonable and it does not take up too much space at all. I had to think a bit to figure out where to put it and still be able to access the water tank in the back - I think that's the only thing that is not ... MoreI love this espresso machine! I had to think a bit to figure out where to put it and still be able to access the water tank in the back - I think that's the only thing that is not basically perfect about this machine - it's hard to reach the tank and I pretty much have to pour water in there blind to fill it which kind of makes a mess sometimes. I think our old machine had a removable tank which was kind of nice.Otherwise this cool machine actually grinds my coffee freshly (at first I was not sure I'd figure out how to get the grind and fill settings adjusted but I think I have it down now after just a bit of trial and error!). I LOVE the tamping kit with the little collar, it really helps keep the mess down. The settings are super easy to use - I've pretty much settled on making a double americano nearly every time I use the machine and they come out super yummy. I love that I can fit my favorite coffee cup under the machine and I don't have to pour from espresso cups. I think the milk frother works fine, I'm still not sure I have the technique down, but I don't end up using it that often actually.Other things that really are nice features is that you can store all the standard accessories on the machine (on top or under the expressing area) when you aren't using it, and the gauge that shows if you are getting the right pressure is helpful when getting to know the grind options. I saw some other reviews saying the coffee doesn't come out hot, but I think if you turn the temp up all the way it's fine (and I almost always preheat my cup with hot water, even just from the tap, which really helps the coffee stay warm!)

My love of coffee and coffee-related things runs deep. I love to nerd-out about coffee, much to the chagrin of my friends, family, coworkers, and random people I meet on the street. It was terrible, so much so that it turned me off of making espresso at home for years. As time has gone on, I've entertained purchasing an espresso machine for home, but often times find myself hesitant on the price tag. More often than not, quality comes at a price when it comes to coffee equipment.DeLonghi's La Especialista line of espresso makers start around $700 for the Arte and goes well north of $1000 for the top of the line machine. The Arte has a great feature set for the base model, and doesn't feel like a base model espresso maker. It's a very attractive machine, extremely shiny but easy to keep clean...although it is mostly plastic, it doesn't look like cheap plastic. Because of its plastic construction it is relatively lightweight, but this makes attaching and detatching the porta filter, as well as engaging the grinder, difficult to do without holding the machine in place. I will be adding some rubber feet to the bottom of this machine to make it a bit more stable. When preparing a drink, the action starts with the removable water reservoir. I love that it's removable--makes for easy filling and cleaning without much fuss, although if you don't have a lot of under-cabinet space, swapping this in and out may make for a frustrating experience. There is a built-in grinder with 8 grind settings. As with any grinder, you will have to find the right grind for your preferred beans, but the dial itself is simple to use and grinds with a good amount of uniformity. You'll also need to choose your dose size. Activating the grinder is done by pressing the included 53mm portafilter (with dosing/tamping guide attached) into the machine. I liked the dosing/tamping guide for dosing, but not so much for tamping.Dosing is also controlled with a dial, this one with 40 different levels. I like the ability to really dial-in your dose size based on the particular bean you're working with, and I wish the grinder could be controlled at this level of granularity. There are two filter screens (single shot and double shot) included with the portafilter and can be snapped into place easily (although removing them is sometimes challenging). DeLonghi also includes a small silicone tamping "mat" for use during tamping.Attaching the portafilter feels a little bit unnatural, at least in part because of the lightweight nature of the machine. It takes some getting used to, but once you know how to engage the locking mechanism, you're ready for brewing. The Arte includes a 3-option control for temperature, and they include in their instruction manuals some suggestions around grind size, dose size and water temperature. This is something you'll find yourself adjusting to find the best shot for your bean of choice. There is an onboard pressure gauge that isn't marked with any sort of pressure measurements, aside from a section on the gauge marked "optimal zone." I don't particularly like this, although if you use it enough you'll be able to determine where on the dial you pull your best shots (over time). DeLonghi claims the Arte is capable of 15 bars of pressure, and given the "optimal zone" is in the middle of the gauge, I'm inclined to think their definition of optimal is 7.5 bars...but I can't be sure of that because the gauge has no numerical markings. As an aside--there is another dial I didn't mention, which has presets for the output of the brewer--espresso only, hot water only, or "americano" which engages both.Brewing is achieved by the press of a button, oddly marked "OK." Not "brew," or "start," or "go." I thought this was a bit strange, but not worth passing on the machine over. After the brew is complete, you're off to the races--unless you are making more than just espresso or an americano. There is an included steam wand, which pulls from the same water reservoir as the rest of the machine and has a dedicated button. It does a fine job heating and frothing milk--I had no issues with it.By most accounts, this is an excellent "entry level" espresso maker that has only a few minor drawbacks. As a home brewer, I'm pretty content with it, and aside from trying to determine what pressure it's operating at and trying to keep it in place when attaching or removing the portafilter, I don't have much to complain about. Everything is very easy to detatch and clean when needed, and everything you need to get started comes in the box. At the time of writing this, I see the machine discounted by 20%, which would be enough to get me to make the purchase again. At the full retail price of $699, I'd still be hesitant...but either way, would recommend it as a perfectly acceptable espresso machine.

Also, you can choose the type of grind you want since the espresso machine is able to create multiple types of caffeinated items (cappuccino, espresso shots, latte's, etc). I am an espresso shot person while my wife loves a good latte. It fit both of our coffee lifestyle needs. My only request is that the grinder can hold more coffee, it is a bit smaller than my stand alone one that can hold a whole bag, this can hold a little over a qtr of the bag of beans.Since I make a double shot of espresso daily, the temperature button is the most useful feature for me. I like my espresso very hot and seeing the temperature has made all the difference for me in my coffee needs as usually even at the coffee shops it is never hot enough. My wife on the other hand does not like it to be as hot as I do and we can adjust it, so like in goldilocks and the three bears, it is just right. You will need to keep an eye on the temp bar itself so you know how hot your brew will be.The only real complaint I have was how loud the milk frother was, since we only use for making latte's it isn't a deal breaker and I know they are also loud in shops when you go out for coffee. It just took us by surprise the first few times we used it.Delonghi out did themselves on this on though, you can feel like a professional barista at the fraction of the cost of the big huge machines. This one fits perfectly on our counter top and we even made a little coffee bar since it has such a sleek design. I highly recommend this for anyone who is first starting out wanting to have more elaborate coffee choices at home to those who are professional home coffee makers.
