I've not seen much difference in the "premium" brands (such as Derwent) charcoal pencils. These pencils are solid in quality and value. I would recommend to anyone looking for a basic set To start with.
This is my first time using charcoal. I found the blacks very gritty. I would get a piece of grit and it would cause the pencil to lift off the paper. I don't know if this is a common thing with charcoal, it's not a major problem, just annoying.
Bought as a gift for a talented teenage artist. She loves the pencils, good for shading & blending I am told. Would happily buy again.
One of the best Charcoal pencils for drawing. It gives very good coverage. Those were perfect for my sketchbook. I always rely on anything I purchase from John Lewis.
Bought for daughter who loves to draw and sketch. She was so happy and loved there is a white pencil to blend with and change shades of other pencils. Very useful for secondary school projects.

I love these charcoal pencils in both the smaller black and white set and the bigger tinted charcoal pencil set. They can be sharpened easily by hand held sharpeners and by craft knife. They hold a point pretty well for my detailed drawing. Like all charcoal you have to handle them carefully and don't drop them. Inside breakage can easily occur which means sharpening it till you hit a spot where the charcoal doesn't break. I wish you could get a pencil extender that takes these larger diameter pencils. Even Derwent pencil extenders are too small. Ahh well can't have everything !
