This is a great sander. I've been using it to remove high spots on a subfloor prior to installing hardwood flooring. Teamed with Diablo 36 grit belts, it is like a hand-held milling machine, removing large amounts of material quickly. The dust collecting system is very effective, belts are easy to change, battery life is quite good, it is quite light and the convenience of being cordless cannot be overstated. I wish I had purchased it sooner.

The steel plate on the bottom could be half an inch longer for more stability (there's room!) because with a 60V 6Ah battery, I find it unbalanced. It tends to lean towards the back, requiring more pressure on the front handle to keep it even. However, any extra effort makes it harder to control it, using 9Ah/12Ah batteries will be even more challenging. 20V batteries tend to die quickly, so consider that. Otherwise, I'm quite satisfied. Not having to deal with cords is an engineering blessing!

I've been using this for a month on jobs (kitchen installation) and at home, all I can say is if you take care of your batteries and tools then this is a great addition, not as fast as my corded Makita but same torque, everyone complaining about runtime must have horrible batteries, on a 20V 5Ah i easily get ~30min of use under load. Tried with multiple batteries, works great. Attaching to a shop vac (with a knockoff adapter) eliminated all dust as well. My only complaint is the lock button is inset.

When you activate the sander, it sands. It sands well. The problem is that it takes a LOT of power. I bought a pack of assorted batteries. Then I had to buy a more powerful charger because my other Dewalt Charger couldn't charge them. The biggest of the batterers (a 20 amp hour) gave me about 30 minutes of operation. I have to sand a whole fence. I just can't justify buying 3-4 batteries so I can work for 2 hours or so when I can just buy a corded sander and use that instead.
Sander stoped working after 6 months of light use. I made sure my batteries weee fully charged and tested them on other tools. Batteries are fine, sander just doesn’t work. HD customer service referred me to DEWALT, and DEWALT customer service was virtually useless. I might not buy DEWALT products anymore.
I read the reviews before buying and saw many comments about this sander chewing up batteries. I have 20+ Dewalt tools and this thing chewed up two 6AH FlexVolts and two 9AH FlexVolts in minutes like they were AAA's. The only tool I have that comes even close to this kind of power consumption is my FlexVolt Chainsaw, and that easily lasts 10X what this does. 2 stars because it works ok, but I'm not ruining all my batteries for this sander, so I will go corded and I suggest you do the same.
Finally DeWalt has a cordless belt sander!!! This tool is a must have for anyone who does any type of woodworking. Countless times I could have used a regular belt sander, but didn't want to deal with the hassle of pulling out cords, dragging them around and overall creating an unsafe workspace. The cordless belt sander is very powerful, quick and easy belt changes and makes my life that much easier and safer when working. The variable speed trigger is amazing for those small finishing touch ups.
I purchased this sander for paint removal on siding and decks, and leveling of large glued-up panels that don’t fit in my planer. This is a good product, except for the short run time. Changing belts is easy and I had no problems with belt tracking, as was noted in other reviews. I have three 30Ah batteries, and only get 2 min run time on each, equates to less than 20 lineal feet of 6” wide board. Would deplete all three batteries before the first could recharge. Might work better with larger capacity packs, but weight would start to be an issue, as the sander is already a bit heavy for work on vertical surfaces.
I'm a long time owner of DeWalt tools, I appreciate the quality and performance of their various platforms over the years. I bought this sander to help strip the coating off my floors under my new cabinets. I own the other two cordless Sanders and expected this one to be a complete beast like the other two. Machine has insane power, nearly took me for a ride across the floor, but after a few square feet of sanding the unit randomly shut off. it progressively became more frequent and is only due to what I assume is a temperature sensor or something in the machine. running it on 6AH flexvolt batteries but still misbehaving on normal 20V batteries as well. overall I'm very disappointed, the sander cost is significant and doesn't measure up to the brand quality at all. ... MoreI'm a long time owner of DeWalt tools, I appreciate the quality and performance of their various platforms over the years.
