My initial use for this product was not for the typical purpose. I was clearing a LOT (to me) of cable left on the property by the previous owner who grew hops and then when taking down part of an old barbed wire fence. It cut through all of it well. The Dewalt discs seemed to cut slower but lasted longer than the other brand (which I can't remember). I do have some projects that are more inline with the normal use of this tool. That being said, I like the paddle, although with gloves on, sometimes the safety switch was a little difficult to flip before it would engage. I went through a number of grinding discs...it was nice to have a manual wheel lock, but sometimes it was hard to engage the wheel lock while unscrewing the piece locking the disc in place, which was ... MoreMy initial use for this product was not for the typical purpose. Will update if that changes with more use.

The tool his hefty for its size and a large battery will add to the weight. The side handle is good to hold the tool steady for flat grinding or sanding but would be at the wrong angle for cutting operations. It is possible to rotate the handle position by removing bolts on the front, but this can also mess up the grinder. The grinder is relatively quiet and very convenient without a cord to get in the way. I used the sanding attachment to try out the grinder and found it very easy to use.

I bought this grinder to work on a trailer that I am repairing. The grinder/sanding would work, but I also needed to cut metal. I reviewed the tool and the User Manual. Then I tried to purchase a Type 1 cutting guard. What a disaster! DeWalt support gave me 7 different, incorrect part numbers for a cutting guard. I bought one and now am having difficulty returning it. I had to contact a tool repair service center (not DeWalt site) to get the proper part number. 3 weeks to get the right part.

I love the fact that this high quality tool allows me to use it anywhere by battery power. My major complaint is with the guard for the guard for the grinding wheel. It is extremely difficult to use and comes loose when you try to adjust it. I have searched online and there are others who have experienced the exact same problem. There is a replacement guard that can be used with it that is aftermarket. The company should be aware of this and change the design. It can come loose while you are using the tool which is dangerous. Especially when I am sharpening my Bush Hog blades. This is extremely dangerous and has resulted in a finger injury for me.
I received the grinder in its box without any other packaging. There was a tear in the cardboard but the contents were apparently all there. The grinder comes with instructions, handle and an Allen wrench, to use with the large knurled spindle clamp nut. The hex indentations in the nut are about 1/10” deep, so there isn’t much engagement area for the Allen wrench. The uncushioned screw on plastic handle which can be attached to the left or the right side of the grinder head. It has a paddle type switch with small lever safety. This is a Flexvolt Advantage tool which is brushless and apparently has a brake. A Flexvolt battery can apparently give the tool up to 54% more power than the standard battery. The grinder gets up to speed quickly and seems to have plenty of power. It has one speed. There’s a fine mesh air intake at the base near the battery and the cooling air exits at the tool head.It has a maximum of 1550 watt output and 9,000 rpm. Weight of the tool is 3.92 pounds.I can’t speak to longevity as I only just got it, but the tool seems well made, and has a 3 year warranty with 1 year free service and 90 day money back guarantee. The tool is made in China.
Being an amateur DIY'ist (is that what it's called?) and woodworker, I didn't think I would find many uses in my day-to-day for an angle grinder. After getting the 20V Max FLEXVOLT brushless angle grinder, I looked up some common uses, watched an online video or two, and got to work.First up, I decided to use it to sharpen some lawn mower blades. I HATE sharpening lawn mower blades. Prior to having this angle grinder, I would use a little attachment for my handheld powered multi-tool. Although easier than using a hand file, it was still obnoxious trying to use the cheap attachment and grinding stones and the results weren't all that great. I took a trip to the hardware store, bought a 40 grit flap disc, and a couple minutes later had 2 fully-sharpened mower ... MoreBeing an amateur DIY'ist (is that what it's called?) and woodworker, I didn't think I would find many uses in my day-to-day for an angle grinder. I took a trip to the hardware store, bought a 40 grit flap disc, and a couple minutes later had 2 fully-sharpened mower blades. Super quick and easy! I will never sharpen mower blades a different way again. This angle grinder was very easy to setup as a beginner and had plenty of raw power; it's almost a little intimidating how much power this grinder puts out. The ergonomics are also very nice and the handle can be easily switched from left to right. I had no issues adjusting the tool-free guard or installing the cutting/grinding discs with the included allen key. I saw an online review of an older model which mentioned that the button that stops the disc from spinning was in a position that wasn't comfortable to get to without removing the handle. I'm happy to say that this model has that button installed on the top of the grinder and allows for much easier access. For my second use, I thought I'd give it a shot at cutting through a hardened steel chain that I wanted to cut in half to get an extra use out of (the original chain is far longer than what I needed it for). I placed the chain in a vice, installed a metal cut-off disc, and sliced through the chain without any issue. Now I have 2 security chains! As far as battery life goes, I had this grinder paired with a DeWalt 6 Ah FLEXVOLT battery. I had no issues with the small projects I used it for. I'm always impressed with DeWalt's cordless power tools in this regard. They're powerful, rugged, and easy on the eyes (I'm a sucker for the yellow and black). For the future, I plan on getting a wire brush disc to clean up the patina on an old and weathered axe. It could also use some sharpening. I have little doubt that the DeWalt 20V Max brushless angle grinder couldn't handle anything I throw at it. I look forward to the further uses I can find from this powerful tool!
Dewalt has upped their game with the Flexvolt Advantage line of tools. These are 20v tools that have a little extra oomph when the 20/60 Flexvolt batteries are used. I was skeptical at first but the batteries DO make a difference (see test results below). It seems they've made improvements to the braking. My older DCG413 doesn't coast long but the new one stops almost immediately. The arbor is 'keyed' with a pressure plate, that is similar to a slipper clutch, that applies nice even pressure across the disk surface. No more spanner wrench to get the disk off; if needed, any 1/4" Allen can get the Arbor Nut off if it gets over tightened. It is hard to say but it does seem just a little bit heavier in your hand over the older DCG413 model.TEST: I compared a new ... MoreDewalt has upped their game with the Flexvolt Advantage line of tools. It is hard to say but it does seem just a little bit heavier in your hand over the older DCG413 model.TEST: I compared a new 20V/60V MAX Flexvolt 6.0Ah against a brand new 20v MAX 5.0Ah battery in my new DCG416 grinder and there was a VERY noticeable difference! You could apply more pressure (so much that I was afraid I might break the disk if I pushed any harder) for longer without kicking out. To be sure, I tried a series of battery tests in two nearly identical grinders, one being my new DCG416 (FV advantage) and its predecessor the DCG413. I tried two different sized 20v batteries, a 2.0 & 5.0Ah, as well as one new 20/60 Flexvolt 6.0Ah fully charged and one older 2/3 charged 20/60 Flexvolt 6.0Ah battery. Both 20v batteries performed the same in both grinders; the 2.0Ah doing equally BAD and the 5.0Ah doing equally WELL in both cases. There was no noticeable difference in how much pressure I could apply and for how long before the grinders would kick out except that the 2.0Ah batteries are simply not suited for grinding. When the new Flexvolt battery was paired with the DCG416 the difference was obvious; the DCG416 seemed as though it wasn't ever going to kick out. The older DCG413 behaved basically the same as it did with the 20V 5.0Ah battery. When I tried comparing both grinders using the older, partially charged Flexvolt battery the difference was not nearly as noticeable but there was still a subtle difference in performance. All in all, there are improvements over the older DCG413 and the Flexvolt advantage does what it says. Hopefully Dewalt comes out with a Flexvolt Advantage version of the DCG405 (slide switch) as Paddle switches can be a pain for long periods of grinding or in awkward positions.
The 48 inch brush cutter that works off the PTO of my tractor takes quite a beating in normal use which means the blades need grinding in order to keep them semi-sharp. The cord on my older grinder gets in the way. The spinning grind wheel cut the cord with just minimal contact. This is the Third Dewalt battery operated tool I’ve received this month. The Dewalt Hedge Trimmer, Dewalt Grass Trimmer and Edger and this Angle Grinder. All three have worked wonderfully on just the power supplied by the 20-Volt MAX Lithium Ion batteries. By the way, the battery and battery charger is NOT included with the Grinder, but if you have other Dewalt tools with the Flexvolt batteries and chargers, they appear to be cross-compatible. In fact, the Grinder has over 50% more power when paired with Flexvolt battery vs. 20V MAX battery. So when you deciding on the tool to use, consider the fact that the batteries are interchangeable. It appears that Dewalt is now using brushless motors on their tools. I found that the case with the tools I’ve received this week. It delivers 1,550 max watts out and up to 9,000 rpm. When I was using the tool to cut bricks, I quickly appreciated the Kickback Brake. It engaged with maximum force to quickly stop the wheel and shut off the grinder when a bind-up occurs. And the clutch shuts down the motor in under a tenth of a second when a pinch/stall is detected. Its lightweight in my opinion, powerful and versatile, but don’t expect the package to contain any accessories. It doesn’t. You’re only purchasing the motor unit and wrench to install accessories with. The tools such as the diamond saw blade or batteries would have to be purchased separately.
Was a great grinder until it wasn’t.Purchased Oct 10, 2022 and broke April 30, 2023Never abused but used everyday. Great power for 20v and ebrake system. The trigger just gave up one day, I opened it up, cleaned out contacts worked for a few more months and today after some messing with it gave up. The trigger was pretty well sealed so I didn’t want to dig into it too deep.I’ll keep buying Dewalt but I’ll wait for the next model.(My 60v grinder I’ve had for 5-6 years and I’ve dropped that thing from 20’ numerous times… still tickin)
