I picked up a new DF64 over Christmas and over the last month of using it have been thoroughly impressed with its performance and workflow.I believe the model I received is a slightly updated version to earlier models that have been thoroughly reviewed. Now that theyāve been properly seasoned Iām seeing some great consistency shot to shot, with a noticeable improvement in clarity in my preferred light roasted single origin beans. Whilst the flat burrs have less margin or error in dialing in than the conical burr grinder I was using, I feel like the shots Iām pulling are now far cleaner and flavor-wise more representative of the actual beans Iām grinding. The second bag I put through my DF64 was a natural Ethiopian heirloom, and I swear someone snuck Allenās Banana lollies into my cup.Adjusting the grind setting is super simple with the large dial ring around the outside of the grinder. Thereās enough friction to make deliberate and small adjustments, and with the included indicator ring knowing your current setting is easy. Like others have said, there is a smaller than ideal sweetspot for espresso with the grinder, and more often than not Iām still overshooting adjustments when dialing in because Iām anticipating needing to make a larger adjustment than actually required. Iām sure as I continue to learn the grinderās nuances this wonāt be an issue, but for now Iām still wasting a shot or 2 getting my espresso extraction optimized. It doesnāt help that I enjoy changing my beans from one single origin to another every time I buy a bag of beans.The grinder still came with the original silicon de-clumper that has featured as the pain point in most other reviews (not the newer dual plastic de-clumper that the V4 appears to ship with). Initially I was seeing some fairly big retention issues (up to .5/g), however this has reduced in the last few weeks to be 0.1-0.2/g with some liberal use of the bellows as the silicon has softened with use. I feel like I need to pump quite hard several times to get the entire dose out, and quite a lot of grounds will fall out with bellowing, but Iām now able to get consistent results. Iām still on the fence about upgrading the chute and either modding or upgrading the declumper, but for now it just means grinding an extra bean or two and then re-weighing after grinding to make sure I have my required dose.Pop-corning is the last minor ****** with this grinder that Iāll touch on - purely as I feel itās the biggest contributor to retention. Bellowing seems to work the best when there is a decent build up of grinds behind the declumper, and with the last few beans of my dose jumping around inside, itās usually the culprit when I see a larger swing in retention than anticipated.All in all the DF64 is still a fantastic grinder for the money, and a great upgrade from my Breville Smart Grinder Pro I had been using previously. It seems this current version Alternative Brewing is stocking goes a ways to improve upon the initial design based on the feedback from previous versions, but there is still room for improvement, especially in regard to the declumper and chute being the main culprits of retention.Bottom line is if youāre looking for a single dose, low retention grinder below $1000 (when on sale), and arenāt opposed to rolling up your sleeves to install a mod or two, itās hard to not recommend the DF64 as a great value option.

I am quite satisfied with the grinder. It retains about 0.3 grams every time I grind, especially above the popcorn stopper. All I do is brush it in with a soft brush and then it comes out. I also clean the grinder every day (not removing the parts) and use a very thin painters brush to clear the declumper. A lot of clumped coffee comes out that way, and then I bellow. It is such a a difference from the crappy built in Breville grinder, that I can't even mention the both of them in the same sentence. Kitchen barista staff is polite and obliging. They always respond promptly. All in all, I am quite satisfied with product and service. I had a product related issue, and with a little nudging, they solved it. Been using it for two weeks so far for espresso. Very good! Easy to use. Between the electro plasma doodad and the bellows, there is almost no retention. Not too messy either. Iām grinding into the supplied cup with the supplied cup extension ring and very little escapes. Fairly easy to dial in. For espresso, you will be working with fairly small changes down the fine end of the adjustment ring, but itās not an issue. The espresso seems to have more of what the coffee experts call āclarityā rather than ābodyā. Apparently if you really want to go nuts, different burr sets can shift this balance around. Iām using it with a Breville Bambino and a Pesado BR54 HE[%] basket.
I purchased the DF64 to serve as a backup grinder while waiting for a replacement motor for my Niche Zero. I didnāt expect to prefer it to the Niche, and I donāt. While many of the shortcomings of the V1 DF64 have been addressed by the manufacturer(s?), some design flaws remain. For me, the most significant is that the stock declumper (at least on mine) tends to clog, and when it does it is necessary to partially disassemble the grinder to clear it. This can be mitigated to some extent by madly pumping the bellows during grinding, but I find this stressful and unpleasant. I have now fixed this problem with an after-market declumper, but this entailed more additional bother and expense than I would have preferred. Now that my Niche has a new motor, though, the DF64 will go into storage as a hedge against grinderlessness should the Niche falter again.

This can be managed by the use of RDT or a handy invention called a cleaning cloth. The declumper hasn't seemed to have been an issue as yet. There is also a bit of "popcorning" from the burrs.I have ordered some mods from online to replace the chute/stock declumper, and an anti popcorn attachment. With these installed it should make this grinder much better.
I researched more expensive grinders and kept seeing comparisons with the DF64 gen 2. But it seemed it was backed-ordered everywhere but IDC, which had the Gen2 with DLC burr upgrade at a very fair price. Shipping was fast.The first thing I noticed was that it was very heavy and the quality of all the accessories was top notch.I ran some old coffee through it to break-in the burrs but that seemed unnecessary as even those shots were decent. Put in the good coffee and it was great.Some reviewers on Youtube mentioned how loud it was, but the grinding sound is the same as I hear in every good espresso place and not as loud as many cheap grinders. To me this is the sound of quality!
I had not much experience with other grinders but this grinder is solid. It is a single dose grinder which is good if you like to change beans or going decaf in the afternoon.After using it for a couple of weeks, I like it. It stopped working one time and seems like there is coffee that got stuck inside. I turned the grind size dial to coarser grind and the machine āspitsā out all the coffee š problem fixed.The dial is nice, making it easy to change the setting to grind finer or coarser. I use it for espresso so canāt comment on other grind size for other types of brewing method.Overall it is a solid machine, build like a tank š. coming from a old baratza vario, this is definitely a step up. it is quicker, and quieter (yes) and really improves the workflow. its also a cleaner machine. quality is excellent. serviceability is excellent. the pump at the top works really well as long as the grinder is on. i have had no issues with messes. that plasma thing does a very good job. i love being able to dose the exact amount of beans. i think you could grind a single dose with any grinder, but you'd be left with a lot more grinds left behind. this has been designed with single dose in mind. i wouldn't go back to the old machine.
