The battery is now fully enclosed in the frame and the positive latching system should prevent ejection upon crashing as sometimes occurred with the original Avata.The five blade propellers have been replaced with a redesigned three blade airscrew, with significantly higher pitch and cup. The revised propeller geometry should produce more thrust. The original Avata is the loudest drone that I have ever heard. Cinewhoops are generally louder than camera drones, but the screeching, extremely loud Avata stood out. They retain the high resolution, 1080p, 100 fps micro-OLED screens, rated at 700 nits brightness and 100 Hz refresh rate. They still have easy and convenient pupillary distance adjustment and focus adjustment (-6 - +2 diopters) via a pair of knobs on the bottom of the goggles.The impactful improvement comes from the two front facing cameras on the Goggles 3. “Real View PIP” can be superimposed on the screen, affording situational awareness and enhanced safety. The field-of-view is extremely narrow and non-adjustable. Despite the PIP, the FAA requirement for a VLOS Observer remains. The fit of the Goggles 3 is more comfortable and includes a forehead support to which the head strap (with ratcheting adjustment) is attached resulting in the weight being on the forehead instead of the face. The battery is in the back of the head strap, eliminating the separate power cable. The battery is claimed to last approximately two hours, and recharges in twenty minutes.Goggles 3 also adds Wi-Fi sharing of the video feed to the DJI Fly app, allowing simultaneous viewing on smart devices up to about 5 meters away, without tethering. This feature is really nice and convenient.The Goggles 3 replaces the touchpad with a 5D switch to access the menus. One of the great features in those menus is Head Tracking Mode. This mode allows controlling the camera direction with your head, while controlling the drone’s flight path with the controller. This facilitates some great video such as orbiting around the subject and sweeping in/out from the subject.The new RC Motion Controller 3 is smaller, and the positions of the joystick and buttons have been rearranged. The Motion Controller 3 retains the Lock (brake) button, which will immediately halt the drone and place the drone in a hover. This important feature can avoid loss of control and crashes. While “Locked”, menus can be accessed with the AR cursor on the screen.Normal and Sport Mode (intelligent modes) flight is easy and intuitive. The flight path is denoted by the cursor circle on the screen. Up/down and left/right rotations of the Motion Controller shift the position of the cursor and control the direction of flight.Flying in Full Manual Mode has been the only way to fly aerobatic maneuvers. DJI implemented “Creative Edge Easy ACRO”, which allows 360° front/back flips, 360° rolls and 180° drift turns using the Motion Controller 3.The pre-programmed “Easy Acro” is great fun! Having the ability to execute aerobatic maneuvers including flips and rolls without extensive simulator practice and Manual Mode flight experience is nice!Preparing for the first flight of the Avata 2 includes:• Drone Registration with the FAA• Charging ALL of the batteries• Installing all software updates using the DJI Fly app (which is not in the Google Play Store and Must Be Sideloaded from the DJI website)!• Pre-flight check of the aircraft, Goggles and Motion Controller including connectivity, and micro SD card installation in the Avata 2 and Goggles 3• Verify airspace clearance through FAA B4UFLY and LAANC if approval is necessaryThe Avata 2 has three Flight Modes. The two intelligent modes, Standard and Sport function similarly, with Sport Mode allowing a top speed of 36 MPH. In those modes the Avata 2 can automatically level and maintain a stationary hover when the controls are neutral and automatically return home (launch point) when battery power is low or signal is lost. In Full Manual (Acro) Mode, there is no automated assistance from the drone. Full Manual means just that, and the pilot must control every aspect of drone operation and flight, with a top speed of 60 MPH.Avata 2 flight is very intuitive and easy with the Motion Controller 3 “joystick”. What truly differentiates the Avata 2 from other FPV drones, is that most FPV’s are flown exclusively in full manual mode and no on-board intelligence is present to help avoid crashes. Normal Mode and Sport Mode are intelligent flight modes which make it possible to fly the Avata 2 easily and intuitively right out of the box, including performing some aerobatic flight that could previously only be flown in Full Manual Mode using the optional FPV Remote Controller 3, and only after hours of practice with an FPV flight simulator.Although the Avata 2 has some intelligent operations, it does not include the features of most camera type drones, such as omnidirectional obstacle avoidance. Compact FPV drones like the Avata 2 are intended to be capable of flight in confined or physically restricted places, including inside buildings, tunnels, etc. They are often flown very close to structures and fixed objects, including trees, walls, etc., and glancing bumps are commonplace. The Avata 2 has fisheye lens optical sensors mounted at the rear/bottom for obstacle avoidance and ground and rearward perception during low altitude and indoor flight.Camera drone functionality like follow-me / active tracking, point of interest / spotlight tracking, auto-pilot or flying a path along preset waypoints are not present in most FPV drones, including the Avata 2. The Avata 2 retains “Turtle Mode” which permits flipping a crashed, inverted drone upright for resumption of flight.The Avata 2 provides a great flight experience. It is extremely easy and great fun to fly. FPV flight can be very exciting and can be used to produce spectacular video!The Avata 2 is packed with so many great features and so many enhancements over the original Avata.The Avata 2 is reasonably fast, and it is extremely maneuverable. Even though it is small and lightweight, it has Level 5 Wind Resistance.The battery life is really excellent for an FPV drone. Flight speed and conditions affect power demand and thus battery life, but I am pleased to get approximately 16-18 minutes from each battery in Normal Mode.The camera is excellent, and videos and stills are incredibly sharp with accurate colors.The Avata 2 is quickly becoming my favorite drone! I have flown it every day since activation and I am producing some nice FPV videos and really enjoying the experience. The Avata 2 is absolutely fantastic, and I am enjoying every flight!I believe that the Avata 2 is the perfect drone for anyone who wants to start exploring FPV flight and for any current FPV pilot who wants a durable, ready-to-fly cinewhoop without the trouble of a custom built FPV drone.

The Mavic Pro felt like a huge leap forward from the Phantom the same way the Avata 2 feels compared to the original FPV!Original setup was probably the easiest I’ve ever experienced with a Drone. The Avata 2 comes with propellers already installed so it was ready to go out the box as soon as batteries were charged. At first glance I was blown away by how small the Avata 2 is in size and weight. It’s by far the smallest drone I’ve ever owned but big things come in small packages. At first glance I was blown away by how small the Avata 2 is in size and weight. It’s by far the smallest drone I’ve ever owned but big things come in small packages. The propeller guards around the installed propellers are a nice touch considering this drone can fit into tight spaces. The FPV googles were easy to setup as well. They have adjustable eye lenses for near and far sighted and ability to move them in and out to fit your face. I love that they added the ability to see your surroundings like a Meta Quest by tapping the side of the Googles twice. This allows you to keep the googles on and still move about and view the area you’re in or even do Picture in Picture of both!The one thing I wasn’t familiar with was the new motion controller, so I used the Academy in DJI fly app and watched instructional videos on the gestures and controls coupled with the DJI Virtual Flight system that allows you to virtually practice the controls I was up and running in no time. Initial flying with the controller was intuitive and easy to use. Certain gestures make it bank or turn sharply and take a little getting used to but overall, I felt right at home with the drone right away. The Avata 2 being so small and compact makes it much nimbler compared to past drones I’ve owned. Putting it in Sport or Manual mode really opens it up and allows you to feel like you’re literally flying and soaring like a bird. The Avata 2 also can-do Acrobatic moves like barrel rolls, flips and 180 drifts which make your footage even more compelling and satisfying to capture. Videos are crystal clear with 4k/60 FPS HDR video with an angle of 155 degrees field of view. Extra features like Horizonsteady which keeps the horizon line stable and Rocksteady to keep the Drone steady in windy and unstable conditions allows the best video recording experience possible. The Avata 2 has 46 gigs of internal storage on the device itself with ability to add more onboard storage with Micro SD cards. With the fly more pack you get 3 batteries which will give you over 26 minutes of fly time per battery and the fast-charging hub delegates power to one battery to charge faster in emergency situations. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve forgotten to charge a battery before a shoot and this feature has already come in handy. One feature that I did not have to use but could come in handy later is “Turtle Mode” which allows you to flip the drone off its back if it becomes stuck. Quick Transfer on the DJI fly app works like a charm and can easily export the video on your iphone in seconds. Footage is easily edited with the LightCut app to use on social media! DJI has left no feature unturned with this drone.In summary the Avata 2 is the most user friendly, nimble and efficient drone I’ve ever come across. It’s an absolute powerhouse and a joy to fly. I love my Mavic 3 Pro but I can honestly see myself using the Avata 2 much more in the future for all situations and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a compact but highly capable drone.

The included charging hub is a nice addition as it charges three batteries (sequentially), has a 2-way power share to function like a power bank, and the best part is the power accumulation mode. Using this mode you can take 2 or 3 low power state batteries and use this to accumulate power to one battery without need to plug in. This is great when out, forgetting to top off charge and you don’t have access to a charger.After registering (weighs 377g, Remote ID compliant) and charging everything, I was ready to go on my first flight with the Avata 2. The first thing I noticed was how comfortable the Goggles 3 are over the previous design. The Goggles 3 now utilize a halo design, with the pressure mainly on your forehead instead of the bridge of your nose, the difference is night and day in terms of comfort. In addition, the Goggles 3 have an integrated battery design, similar to the Integra Goggles that were released after the original Avata. The Goggles 3 are also standalone, meaning you can fly the drone without your phone connected which is appreciated. The Goggles 3, like the Avata 2, support the latest O4 transmission, providing lower latency, improved throughput, and increased range. Inside the goggles, the Micro-OLED screens are sharp and clear after dialing in my adjustments with the new +2.00D to -6.00D diopter lens. If you need further accommodation DJI does include -2.00 D lens, though my prescription was within range. The FOV in Goggles could still be better relative to VR headsets, it is good for the FPV space. Also new is the ability to activate passthrough, though I found tapping to require more force than I expected and the external cameras FOV are very narrow and somewhat grainy.While the original Avata was fun to fly with Motion RC, you were limited in your ability to control the drone. The RC Motion 3 has significantly improved upon the original motion RC adding new controls. The redesigned trigger allows reverse while the addition of the joystick enables control of elevation and horizontal movement of the drone while using the gyro function. These additions make flying it far more accurate and enjoyable. While a seasoned pilot would prefer a traditional RC such as the new but not included FPV Controller 3, the RC Motion 3 is easy for anyone to pick up and start flying while providing a truly unique experience to flying FPV. Another addition is the acro dial, which can be used to convert the joystick into acro “controls” to initiate automated maneuvers. Though these are great for newcomers, they are limited in their finesse and can only be performed in normal mode.The original Avata had a few prominent issues for me; the SD card location inside the prop guard, it was a bit top heavy with the battery mounted above the pusher design props, and the aforementioned battery desired to be free from restrictions of the airframe, ejecting itself after a crash when possible. DJI addressed these issues and more on the new Avata 2. Thankfully, DJI upped the onboard storage to a very useable 46GB plus enabling quick transfer, allowing you to wirelessly transfer videos without needing to pull the SD card or plug in the drone. In addition, the SD card and USB port have been moved out of the ducts and on the side of the air frame, easily accessible. DJI refined the Avata 2 further with a new puller design, spacing the motors out slightly and positioning the battery in between the props instead of on top. DJI also redesigned the battery, with the connection interfacing inside the airframe similar to a Mavic or Mini, and improved clips making it far easier to install or remove the battery while providing secure retention. I have had a few crashes and so far not only has the Avata 2 faired well but I have yet to experience a battery ejection. The battery life has also been improved, with up to 23 minutes of flight time. I average 15 minutes per battery but that is usually in sport mode with fairly aggressive flying. . DJI also added additional position sensors in the rear, which improves stability and position hold making it so the Avata doesn’t float around as much. The new camera system has improved performance with a 1/1.3″ sensor capable of 12MP stills and 4K60 HDR video (EIS off). The Avata 2 shoots great footage, with a variety of shooting modes and full camera control. The new gimbal design has increased range while also not getting the ducts in the shot while looking down. HDR is also limited to certain modes but I did not see where to enable while shooting 4K30, it is possible DJI will make tweaks to their software to improve discoverability or I just missed it.Most importantly flying the Avata 2 is a blast, it is currently my favorite to fly even though I don’t have the FPV controller 3 yet. The improvements and refinements make this one of the best ready to fly cinewhoop drones not just for someone familiar with Mavics, but anyone interested in cinematic FPV flying. Once you outgrow the motion RC, you can even move up to the FPV controller and hone your skills further. Unfortunately DJI is in limbo with talks of banning even their consumer products at the time of this review due to national security concerns, but hopefully legislators carve out provisions for the drone community as DJI has a unique offering for fans and those new to FPV alike. The Avata 2 provides such a great experience that it is hard to not recommend. It is easily one of the most beginner friendly FPV drones on the market, with the Fly More combo being the best value.
