The Phantom 4 Pro V2 from DJI boasts a 3-axis-stabilized gimbal camera with a 20MP, 1" CMOS sensor capable of shooting up to 4K/60fps video and well as photo bursts at up to 14 fps. The hull has been updated from the previous Phantom 4, now featuring magnesium alloy construction for increased rigidity and reduced weight. The FlightAutonomy system adds dual rear-vision sensors plus infrared sensing for a total of five directions of obstacle sensing and four directions of obstacle avoidance. Compared to the Phantom 4 Advanced variant, the Pro features the noted four, rather than two, directions of obstacle avoidance and offers a 5.8 GHz channel for the Lightbridge link, in addition to 2.4 GHz.

I have since come to find that this is rarely true.I got the drone, I set it up correctly, and I flew it a total of 4 times. Early on I could tell there was a problem. The camera kept getting the legs in frame of the shot anytime I flew it to the right or left. This is not supposed to happen, but I was assured it was a software or component issue (seems like it was), that could be rectified by calibrating the camera through the app. I did the calibration with little success or change in issue. I flew once to test the flight, second time to capture some images, third time to see if I had fixed the camera issue, and then I went to bed.The next and final day, I got up, went through the same steps to get the camera to behave right, and took off. Maybe 5 minutes into flight, my camera feed goes out, and I look up to see my $1,000 drone fall from the sky at about 175 ft. I ran up to it after it bounced on the ground and saw a heaping mess. Smoke came from the back of the camera, and I could smell burnt in the air. I picked it up and noticed the battery light was flickering weirdly, I took it out and saw scorch marks on the back of the battery connectors. I then brought it inside and did nothing but research what happened for the rest of my day.It turns out that issues like this are common and the reasonings for it differ drastically. But the common denominator is that the Phantom 4 pro V2 overheats constantly. Most of the time it seems to be the result of a factory issue or some misaligned replaced part. There has even been reports that it can be a firmware issue after an update.Regardless of the reasoning, I got to have 4 flights with this, and then it died. When I reached out to B&H, they offered their sincere apologies and told me there was nothing they could do since it had been in flight. Now I have an ugly, over-priced paper weight. This is awful because I had just got my part 107 license and was planning on doing Aerial Photography part-time.

Prior to buying the very good condition drone from Lensrentals, I purchased from another site and it turned out to be a fake P4v2. Always over thinking and taking random flights to the ground (aka crashing). I chalked it up to being second hand.BUT THIS FRICKEN Phantom 4. Right out of the box this thing is giving me issues. It wants to update this firmware and that safety map and then it doesn't want to connect the RC to the aircraft. Five plus hours of my life I'm not getting back. This thing is still not working. How hard is it to make a drone that just works right out of the box?

Gimbal was not functioning due to improper packing

Gimbal was not functioning due to improper packing, it seems. When package arrived, the plastic gimbal securing piece was not secured and the drone gimbal was loose inside the case. Upon powering on and testing the drone, the gimbal was making a much louder sound than usual, sluggish and bumpy responsiveness and then it locked up at a bizarre angle. Lensrentals customer service dispatched a replacement immediately, were easy to get in touch with and to speak with, which I appreciated. When I ship our company Phantom 4 Pro V2 I have the plastic arm clipped in place, bubble wrap around the gimbal/plastic arm, and I put foam around the hard case within the box to cushion impacts. Not sure how you could make that kind of packaging user-friendly and reproducible ... MoreGimbal was not functioning due to improper packing, it seems. Great aerial platform for any photographer

I originally had a Phantom 4 standard, and it suffered a crash in which it was destroyed. So, I was looking at the Mavic 2, but ultimately decided to go with this version of the Phantom because I already had 3 batteries, and being that they have very similar cameras, I preferred the more flat profile of the Phantom 4 Pro 2.0. Also, I already have a Mavic Pro, and the Occusync flight range helped sealed the deal. I fly this drone 4 miles out over the ocean, chasing freight ships, and by the time I hit the “time to turn around” signal, I still have full signal on my controller. So, the only limititation I see on the Occusync 1.0 is the battery life. And 4 miles is plenty. Combined with the Poloar Pro 128 ND filter, these photos look amazing. It provides me a low F-Stop, along with a low shutter speed and keeps the Histogram right in the middle. I get a full range of highs and lows. And the colors pop. I absolutely recommend this drone.

Anyways so after getting home and updating the drone charging the batteries I went out to fly it. Immediately I knew something was wrong, the drone started to wobble and drift away in its own. After getting it back to land I took it back inside and reset it to factory settings and reinstalled the software using DJI Assiant 2 for phantom. I had great connection nothing was wrong but it kept drifting I was worried about this. Next thing I get is a compass error and so I go to try to calibrate and then it bakes everything is good which was strange, I kept getting compass error issues and the drifting, after looking around I found others with the same issue. Later on after landing it I took it back out and decided to fly it and sadly the wobble came back :(. I decided to go back to Best Buy and exchange it I was worried it might fall out of the sky didn’t want to take any chances. So I get to the store and tell them what’s going on and I get another unit. I was worried it would still happen so I got home updated it flew it. Luckily this one has no issue I’m happy so far with the purchase. So far guess I just got a bad unit. So I caution everyone if your getting one always check before you fly make sure everything is good and if you see the slightest issue I suggest switching it out don’t risk it these are expensive devices.

I went against the normal and originally bought a Yuneec Typhoon 4K Pro. Technically I bought (2) of them within a 3 week period. Both failed, one suffered a motor failure mid flight and the second went dead stick on the initial flight and impaled itself into a tree, many pieces covered the ground.I decided to try again, but this time with the Phantom 4 pro V2. I have to be honest, while it doesn't have some of the nicer features of the Typhoon (independent gimbal control, retractable landing gear, etc) it is superior in almost every other area. It is significantly easier to operate, it has way longer range, the upgraded camera is superb and the SW is light years ahead. The only nitpicking issue we have the Active Tracking often gets lost if the subject goes ... MoreI went against the normal and originally bought a Yuneec Typhoon 4K Pro. It is significantly easier to operate, it has way longer range, the upgraded camera is superb and the SW is light years ahead. The only nitpicking issue we have the Active Tracking often gets lost if the subject goes behind a tree or any type of coverage even for a second. Otherwise it is absolutely superb in every aspect. While it is large, if you are interested in having the best image in photos/video possible (with the correct neutral density filters which are not included) this is the unit to go with.

Lost control in flight
16 December 2018

I love my DJI Phantom 4 Pro, it’s very easy to fly and takes amazing video in 4K. When I purchased it, I learned that DJI has a program called “DJI Care” that will provide repair or replacement of a damaged drone. Today I’m thankful I purchased it, because after 2 weeks of flying the drone with easy and perfect control, on this day immediately after take off the drone went out of control. The flight lasted about 15 seconds, the drone went up 25’, then shot backwards and down into Lake Michigan. DJI is going to take care of the drone since it was retrieved by some very kind paddleboarders. I’m writing this so future new pilots can learn from my experience, don’t place great trust in your drone, and for goodness sake never fly near people. I’m writing this so future new pilots can learn from my experience, don’t place great trust in your drone, and for goodness sake never fly near people. In my case there were a few people in the area, and I’m extremely thankful it was only the drone that got hurt. If that thing had careened into a person, injures could be severe and permanent. This has me wondering about both safety and liabilities involved when flying a drone. It’s going to take a lot to build my trust again. I’m not saying this is a bad product, I really like mine, but don’t be lulled into too much trust in your drone because you have a dozen flawless flights. In my case I’m thinking something went wrong with a sensor, or possibly the GPS was not given enough time to warm up. Any future flights will allow 2 minutes of warmup and verification of all sensor data as a pre-flight.
