A masterpiece that makes others feel dull by comparison, and is definitely a strong reason to buy a Wii U

Now I've been a fan of the Donkey Kong Country games since the original game. I hold the SNES Donkey Kong Country trilogy with such high regards, and Donkey Kong Country Returns was what I thought one of the best games on the Wii. What made the experiences for the Donkey Kong Country games so memorable was because of how dynamic the levels were. What made the experiences for the Donkey Kong Country games so memorable was because of how dynamic the levels were. And Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze continues this tradition, but also improves on it. The levels in this game are vibrant, full of life and have so much personality that every level in the game is never remotely the same, which make the constantly diverse levels in Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze make most of the other platformers dull by comparison. And adding to this all is the introduction of a highly dynamic camera during some stages, such as barrel blasting sequences, mine-cart levels, or rocket-barrel levels. It provides a fresh and much more cinematic perspective, and even opens up some unique gameplay elements. A mechanic returning from the Donkey Kong Country trilogy on the SNES is swimming. Games with underwater levels are usually bad, but this game somehow makes a big, great ape feel graceful. A large part of why I enjoy the levels in the game so enjoyable is just how atmospheric they are. The way the visuals and graphics work together with the gameplay makes the levels nothing short of sublime. Now there is one major feature I haven’t mentioned, and that’s the choice to pick between as one of three different partners, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong, each of which grants Donkey Kong a new ability. Diddy Kong allows you to hover horizontally in the air briefly with his barrel-jetpack, Dixie Kong basically gives you a double-jump by turning her hair into a helicopter for even more air-time, and Cranky Kong uses his cane as a pogo-stick to jump high and cross hazardous terrain without harm. But here’s the fact: every character isn’t created equally. Dixie Kong basically makes me have no reason to pick Diddy Kong, while Cranky Kong’s pogo-stick ability can be useful, it is too situationally-dependant to be of use most of the time. So for most of the game, I ended up just using Dixie Kong. Although I wish Diddy Kong and Cranky Kong should have been of more use, this isn’t a complaint, as it did not ruin my experience of the game at all. Also, this game does support 2-player simultaneous co-op, as the first player as Donkey Kong, and second as one of the three partners, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong. Overall, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is a beautiful experience from beginning to end that consistently delivers surprises around every turn, which is why I’m giving Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze a full 5 stars out of five.

One of the most important games of my childhood lives in my adult collection! Some of my earliest memories are on DK Island, and I was more than happy to purchase it with my first SNES console. This game has gorgeous graphics, and the music by David Wise is so beautiful it may move you to tears. The gameplay is as dynamic today as it was in the 90s.My cartridge came in fantastic condition, I was nervous that being an older game there might be weathering, or chip damage. However the quality control department at DKOldies has got you covered.

Brings back childhood memories!
6 August 2023

The condition of the game is excellent! As soon as I opened the package and started playing it brought back many fond memories of my childhood. Game stared up right away without issue. The quality is better than expected. Now I can share memories with my children for years to come.

Great game! The first one did not want to work with my snes, so I contacted Dkoldies. They gave me very helpful hints to get the game working. But it did not help. So they sent me a replacement game. Still did not work so I tried it on my daughter’s snes that I got from Dkoldies and it works great. In the end Dkoldies is a safe and reliable company and go the extra mile for customer satisfaction.

Fantastic Graphics, Fun Design, Fake Difficulty
6 August 2015

I picked up a Nintendo Wii U to play about eight games: Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros Wii U, Zelda Wind Waker, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, DKC Tropical Freeze, and Super Mario 3D World. Notice all of these games are Nintendo exclusives, and most of them are made by Nintendo.I was really looking forward to DKC because I grew up playing Donkey Kong Land 2 and 3 on my Game Boy for hours at a time. I had tried the Wii DKC Returns game, and it was pretty good. Unfortunately, this Wii U version fell below my expectations. First off, the game looks absolutely awe-inspiring. This game is eye-candy to the max. The levels, enemies, and AI partners are all interesting and beautifully made. The levels are very memorable, and the soundtrack is great too. The couch co-op mode is pretty fun as well. Although this game isn't very beginner friendly past the 2nd stage of levels. Now the things I didn't like were a false difficulty level and the lack of precise controls. The game "enhances" difficulty by basically throwing random obstacles in your way. It literally FORCES you to die the first time because there is no reaction time, there was no way to see death coming. The second time through you have learned exactly when to jump or roll, but only from the memory of dying. This aspect coupled with controls that aren't very precise on the gamepad leaves the game feeling not very fun with a fake level of difficulty. To be fair I didn't try it on the Wii U Pro controller, so maybe the controls were a little better on that.Out of the games I played for the Wii U, I would fully recommend Bayonetta 2 and Super Mario 3D World as my favorite games period.

Love This Game!!!
20 August 2022

Love this game so far! All the levels are colorful and very detailed and long full of fun collectibles! One level I hated so far was level 2-K from world 2 earned after getting all the KONG letters in world 2. That game contains pro level precision for such a short level yet even after suffering for 45 minutes I passed it, but I still have to get the leftover puzzle pieces left lol. Fun and challenging game but has an easier mode for anyone. Recommend for any newer gamer and even pro gamers!

Love these games! Childhood memories
12 February 2023

Love these games! Childhood memories ignited!! Came in good condition with 0 issues other than the sticker being scuffed due to me picking sub par to save a few bucks. But all in all awesome! Late nights playing two player with my wife, which keeps my kids off their game systems. It’s a win, win, win.

Not your SNES D.K. Country

This version of Donkey Kong County is still following in the platformer style with a 3D element. There's no D.K. coins but there are puzzle pieces to collect. The visualization of all the scenery in most of the levels is really nice along with the music. The controls are very responsive using the Wii U game pad. I don't have a Wii U pro controller so I can't vouch for the response with one.For the price of $15.00 I feel it was worth it although I still feel it is lacking.I feel removing the D.K. coins and providing multiple puzzle pieces, mostly hidden through the levels, was a bad move.I also feel that having to play the game multiple times to achieve full completion is a major drawback. The original D.K. country's along with the N64 version only called ... MoreThis version of Donkey Kong County is still following in the platformer style with a 3D element. That's where I find my sweet spots for games so take all I've said with a grain of salt. The game is very well programed. I found no glitches or freezing throughout my initial play through. It's a good game, but I still find my self revolving between D.K. Country 1,2, and 3, more often than returning to Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze.I still find it a fun game and would recommend any D.K. Country or platformer lover to check this out if u have a Wii U. If u don't have a Wii U yet I wouldn't go out and get one for this game and only a few other games yet. I did and I regret my $200.00 Wii U purchase due to it mostly sits there turned off 29 day a month out of a 30 day month. I would recommend wait for the price drop in a few months due to the Nintendo NX being released soon, and the supposive talk of Wii U game development coming to a screeching halt once the Nintendo NX is released.Grab the game(s) u want for it as u find them cheap on line or at game shops/flea markets new or used and then get a Wii U once the price drops.
