DT20700-QZ DeWalt Multi-tool Sanding Platen

Useful tool delivered at express speed but would like to see a design change enabling hook and loop section to be replaceable after overheat causes hook and loop to melt. Impractical to stop work and allow cool down each time plate gets hot especially tips when working in corners.

No problem with Folkestone Fixings who dealt with the order and delivery in a superb way and were also the best in terms of price for this unit. My reason for the low marks on quality and value for money arise due to the fact that this is the third DeWalt sanding Platen I have had to get in a six month period. The problem is with the hatched rubberised surface that gets clogged and will not hold the sanding discs. I regularly try to clean the surface but it does no good.

Briefly Functional

I'm not sure why the quality of this particular DeWalt accessory is so pants. I went through three in the space of about three weeks of usage. In every case, the corners of the pad started wearing, which meant the sanding paper was no longer gripped. I eventually decided to go for a low-cost Erbauer alternative - it doesn't last any longer, but it's a third of the price!

De Walt multi tool sander

The De Walt multi tool is one of the best available. The sander is great for getting into corners & small areas but it’s not perfect. It’s an odd shape so needs be adjusted. After a while the Velcro on the pad wears so sanding pads stop working properly.

Great but requires carefull use

A very usefull tool, neat, gets into small spaces & easy to use BUT heavy work will just melt the hooked surface very quickly. I have had to obtain this as a replacement. Keep the work light and buy a full size sander where full-on work is intended.

Great quality sanding pad holder and pads... Have tried less expensive (non branded) sanding pads) before only to find them a total failure and not cost effective. Branded sanding pads and holder definitely worth the extra few pounds.....

Used for approximately 10 minutes, the hook and loop attachment system melted. Total waste off money.

Needs careful use when continuous sanding

Really important to note this review is not about the seller but the DeWalt sanding platen. I bought a new DeWalt multi-tool mainly for cutting floorboards and into dry wall for boxes, but it came with a sanding head and I thought that was great. Because the DeWalt has a powerful motor the sanding platen fitted with rough grade paper really got through most of what I was using it for. But then I started doing door frames and therefore had to put a lot of effort into the hard-to-get corners. On the second night of sanding, when I went to replace a sanding sheet, I found that I had melted one corner of the platen which I cursed myself for doing (this melted off the Velcro surface), thinking I had been too hard and aggressive when sanding. A few weeks later I did some more detailed sanding work and to my surprise, I melted another platen on exactly the same spot. This is the 3rd platen I'm on in a short space of time. When I compare it to my dedicated B&D sander with the same platen profile, I have never had any melting issues and I worked the B&D as hard as the DeWalt and over many years. So my only conclusion is the platens' are not high grade material, despite having the DeWalt brand. I did write to DeWalt but never received a reply to either of the two emails sent. So my advice for using the sander is - don't use it for corner or edge detailed work when the pressure is all on the front point of the platen.

Very poor

This item did not last more than 2 days of use. The velcro-type material did not adhere to the pads and eventually started to melt and come away from the pad at the corners. I purchased DeWalt thinking the quality would be better but have been disappointed.

disintegrates - useless without pad saver

Many thanks to the previous reviewer who advised using a Mirka pad saver. I was thinking the sanding capability of the tool was completely useless thanks to the ridiculously fragile nature of the sanding pad accessory - really, not fit for purpose (DeWalt, you really need to address this). But your advice to use the Mirka pad saver has meant that I can now use the tool for detail sanding, after all. Thanks!
