This is the easiest to pick up and play version of Dungeons and Dragons yet! Trust me, I’ve been playing and running games since the 80’s! The game is evolving with more adventures and supplements coming all the time. Your only limits are your imagination. Great team building fun, and the best social storytelling game you can play!

This book is awesome for every DND player. Just get the book. It's a well-made hardcover with full color pages and tons of relevant info to everyone's campaign. It is worth the price I paid (about $23 or $24 I think) and it's just a nice thing to own. My one issue with this order is the small-ish dent on the top back cover. My other books in this order were fine probably because they were wrapped in plastic. Maybe the dent came before shipping. I'll never know, but the dent on my otherwise perfect book will always be there. I would upload images of the book but unfortunately Target website says "Sorry, your file could not be uploaded."

As a Pen and Paper gamer who started rolling up characters in the late 70s with the original blue box for Dungeons and Dragons, gaming has been a part of most of my life. This newest incarnation of D&D is the single greatest step forward in sophistication for the franchise. Unfortunately, the way the character classes are designed make it clear that players are to play characters that are only really at home in an official D&D setting. If you want to play Conan, youll struggle. Fafhrd or the Grey Mouser? Youre out of luck. The Game Master has a choice; redo the character classes from scratch or use a commercial setting. Other than this glaring flaw, its good. Very good.

I have interesting feelings about 5E as someone who started with Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 edition 11 years ago. For a player who is new and looking to jump right into tabletop RPGs this system is excellent. Character creation has been improved thanks in large part to a well organized and easy to read book, and the general variety of classes and races is a welcomed touch as well. The book itself is of excellent quality, with some of the most consistent and imaginative artwork that one will find in any tabletop RPG. My concerns with the Player's Handbook, as well as 5E as a whole is that there is a general lack of depth found in previous editions as well as other systems. My concerns with the Player's Handbook, as well as 5E as a whole is that there is a general lack of depth found in previous editions as well as other systems. At first this frustrated me, especially when I usually start my players at higher levels. Equipping players with tailor made, customized gear is not as cut and dry as it has been in the past with the various tables available for magical item generation with the estimated in game gold costs. This leaves much more responsibility on the DM to know the items available, knowing the overall balancing of the system, and coming up with items and starting gold appropriate to the tier of play. In some ways it puts more power in the hands of the DM, but in some ways it can stifle some of the player's ability to think creatively in their builds during creation. However, these are minor criticisms as the overall ease of play, variety of subclasses, races, and abilities make this system an excellent addition to any bookshelf and is a nice starting point for new players or veterans looking for a game with flexibility and ease of play.
This is probably my favorite edition of D&D yet. Gone are 4e's miniature combat focus and the abusability of 3e/3.5e, 5e is a refreshing journey back to 2e sensibilities while also acknowledging the advancements pen and paper RPGs have made over the years. One of the hall marks of this newest system is the notion of bounded accuracy which is this design notion to keep numbers from bloating and instead uses a system of advantage and disadvantage (roll 2d20, taking higher or lower result respectively). This also helps keep the need for a constant stream of magic items to a minimum that tended to plague higher level play in 4e, making the ones you do get really exciting. In an attempt to streamline the rules and breath some simplicity back into the game, this edition ... MoreThis is probably my favorite edition of D&D yet. The action economy we've grown used to between 3.5/Pathfinder/4e is more or less still there, but the language around is awkward as the writers seem to be trying to acknowledge it's still there. As with any system, there's a ton of debate over certain ambiguous wording of abilities, feats, spells, etc. but this edition does a great job of reinforcing the role of the DM and letting people play the way they want to play. While the newest edition of D&D is on the pricier side, the book itself is beautiful and you can tell where they can get off on charging a bit more. This is certainly one of the best illustrated rule books I've ever seen.
Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition is a wonderful revamping of the classic rpg. WoTC did a fantastic job of creating an edition that is easy to learn, streamlined, variety, and a focus on story.Character creation is diverse with lots of options. Races now have sub-races, you can choose to be a hill dwarf or mountain dwarf. Classes have have sub-classes that can be learned at later levels. As an example, fighters can become battle mages. And now characters have backgrounds. Cool backstories that give you some unique skills and items. Your cleric could have been a street urchin or your ranger could have been a former soldier. Lots of fun characters to be created.Skills and combat have been streamlined. They've implemented advantage / disadvantage which is used when you are good and or bad at skills or combat. My favorite part is that they've taken out the goal of min/maxing compared to previous versions or other fantasy RPGs. Being any class and race is a good idea. None are a waste of creating and all can be played well.My only complaint is that the index is horrendous. The index references other parts of the index, instead of the book. Another small complaint is character creation has some book flipping, which can be frustrating. If you've grown tired of other RPGs or want to get back into D&D, this is the edition to do it in.
It's all here for creating characters for the most famous role-playing game. It seems like such a time commitment to play a game like this. Even as a teenager it was hard to find others to commit to playing (just reading the rules is a big commitment!). But for me the books are a beautiful nostalgia trip (I played D&D in the 80s) and fun just to read. Maybe I'll convince people to play with me one of these days!
There are so many typos in this manual that I'm wondering if it's a copy rather than an original. How can something this well read not have had these corrected by now? Did no-one prof read it? Easily one typo per page. Every (except for headings for some reason) time 'orc' occurs in the manual it's printed as 'ore'. But there are lots and lots of other typos and weird corrupted words. I can nearly always work out what the intent of the sentence was but it's surprising that SO MANY errors made it to print. That said it's a good manual, sturdy hard-back construction. A few things could be explained better but all in all still worth purchasing, unless there is a newer edition or re-print available in which case (assuming the errors have been fixed) I'd recommend ... MoreThere are so many typos in this manual that I'm wondering if it's a copy rather than an original. This book is the primary reference a player needs to get started in the Dungeons and Dragons hobby. It's a great introduction for any aspiring player, and continues to stay relevant even after many sessions of play. From making a character to using skills, the majority of cases can be found on these pages. Because it is a reference book, it's not exactly meant to be read straight through (although you can). When you need to know how a specific rule or process works, you usually look it up and continue playing. Grab a set of polyhedral dice, a character sheet (available free online), and a pencil, and you're ready to go!
I have played D&D for thirty one years, that includes all editions first to fifth, with third edition being my favorite. But since I've been playing fifth edition it just feels like a HUGE expansion for third edition. The game flow and easy rule changes makes fifth edition perfect for novices and veterans alike. And this gift set is an excellent way to be introduced to fifth edition or role playing in general. The price for suggested retail is really good at 169.95 but EBAYs 98.77 can't be beat. I don't really have anything bad to say about this gift set because I LOVE it and would readily recommend it to anyone. So if you're curious about D&D pick this gift set up and get to ROLLING!!!!!!! HAPPY ADVENTURING!!!!!!!
