It gently cools/heats the room without causing stir. This is particularly useful when children are sleeping and the temperature control monitors the levels, clearly a strong feature of the fan.To bring the sound into perspective, it barely lifts above 40 decibels, which is equivalent to a library atmosphere. This is a plus for light-sleepers as you able to rest without the disturbance. It plays host to no visible heating elements, motor or fins, the now familiar hole in the centre of all of Dyson's air multiplier fans and heaters features one again on the Dyson Hot Cool. It is wholly safe to stick your hand straight through the middle without concern of being burned, perfect for those with small children in the house and for cleaning purposes. (Jet Focus! Air-multiplier!) In addition, it feels like it's time for an upgrade, to eliminate the bright display that many users find intrusive at night, and to bring some smart tech on board.Overall, at full price, I felt that I was contributing just that bit too much to Dyson's profits.

The AM05 had to perform a really inconvenient process on the remote of pressing and holding the temperature up or down buttons to go from fan to heating modes, when the digital readout got down to 32 degrees, then it was on the fan only setting. This AM09 heater is quieter than the AM05 heater, but I have found that it achieves some of its improved quietness, from having a decreased airflow in the heater mode. The airflow in the fan only mode on both models, seems to be equivalent.I bought this Dyson AM09 to replace my AM05 as my living room heater, so it was a direct swap, and the AM05 is now a bathroom heater, yes my bathroom does have a ground fault power receptacle to prevent electrocution. Anyway, placed my new AAM09 in the same exact location as my AM05, this AM09 does not move quite as much air in heater mode, when compared to the AM05, but it is quieter, I just wish they would not have tried to achieve some of the improvement by decreasing the airflow in heating mode. Both the AM05 and the AM09 do have a lesser airflow in any fan speed setting when the heater is on, compared to just the fan setting, this is on purpose, to avoid so much airflow that it might cause a customer to think it is not putting out air that is hot enough. Dyson engineered their heaters, so that the heater setting has less air flow in any speed, to make the air output feel sufficiently hot on even the highest fan speed. Many customers must have complained that the Dyson AM05 was too loud, so they improved this AM09 and made it quieter mostly by improved air flow channels on the inside of the heater, but I can tell that some of the improved quietness when operating, is from it also having a decreased airflow in the heater mode. That was not even necessary at all, they effectively decreased the effective heating capability of this AM09, in efforts of trying to avoid customers complaining about it being loud. The fact that they made it quieter by way of improved airflow channels, was all that was needed.Having slightly decreased the airflow in heating mode, makes this newer AM09 less able to heat objects further away from the heater.Comparing the two heaters, the AM05 blows the heat further away from the heater, more effectively heating objects further away, but it is louder than the AM09.

Its great that it doesn't have a blade or other type of propelled object that could hurt a kid or animal. Its nice to have a fan and heater in one. It is not the quality I would expect from a $200 appliance. The unit is made of a thin, lightweight plastic, easy to scratch, and crack. The fan barely circulates air in the room. It does not improve air quality or cool the temperature in the room or provide a strong enough stream of air to cool an individual unless you are within 4 feet of the unit. It is top heavy and easy to knock over. The heater works better than the fan but not 1/2 as well as the $20 space heater i have. Overall it is a disappointment. We bought this because it has a good reputation, good writeups and, particularly, because it is "Quiet Mark" approved, suggesting it is quiet. It is not quiet. It emits an irritating white noise at a higher pitch than a regular fan (air rushing through thin tubes) and I had to turn up the volume on the radio to hear over the top. Reading up about it: "Quiet mark" means "quietest in class" - probably true if compared against fan heaters, but definitely not the case for a circulating fan. Or, at least, if it is still "quieter" for a fan, the noise it does emit is in a frequency band such that it can be heard, rather than a typical fan emitting lower frequency noise at the limits of our hearing (so we notice it less)The airflow was also disappointing; the regular 16inch ... MoreWe bought this because it has a good reputation, good writeups and, particularly, because it is "Quiet Mark" approved, suggesting it is quiet. It is not quiet. It emits an irritating white noise at a higher pitch than a regular fan (air rushing through thin tubes) and I had to turn up the volume on the radio to hear over the top. Ok, it didn't heat. But in April that's not what we needed. Standing 2m away from the Dyson unit we got little more than a passing draft for a second as it oscillated past (with the 'narrow' focus), and with the 'wide focus' you couldn't feel a thing. There were no indications that the unit was faulty or was operating in any way that is unexpected, so we didn't request a replacement. We just sent it back. Sorry James, not your finest work.Would not recommend. Objectively: Build quality was excellent, felt solid. But I wanted a fan, not a sculpture. You might like it, it may work in your setting, but would urge a home demo before committing to it. Don't trust what you hear in a noisy sales-environment (you'll almost certainly not notice the white noise).

This is a good quality, well built product. It looks attractive too. I have so far only used it to heat my studio, not to cool it. It does put out a cool breeze when you put it on the cooling setting, so I fully believe it would work well to cool a room. The reason I bought the Dyson heater is because my previous fan-heater caught fire, so I didn't want to have the same technology (of coils which heat up) for fear of the same thing happening. This ceramic plate technology does seem safer.I will only really know how well the heater performs once the weather gets cold in the depth of winter (it is mid October now), but so far it definitely heats my studio well (about 3.5m x 4.5m - I use a small, plug in oil filled radiator for background heat, and use the Dyson to ... MoreThis is a good quality, well built product. It also seems a bit quieter than the fan heater (though it is definitely audible). But ... strangely, I haven't really 'bonded' with this heater yet. Somehow, and that is likely to be my personal, psychological response to it, I don't feel the sense of 'cosiness' that I had with the fan-heater. I couldn't say why. There also seems to be a curious thing where if you turn the thermostat down to where it stops heating the room, there seems to be a cool 'breeze' coming from it. That isn't there if you fully turn it off, so it is no problem - I just need to remember to turn it off rather than down. It's not a very strong effect, and I haven't been back to the Dyson sales people to ask about this and to see if I am doing something wrong. In conclusion - the Dyson heats well and is not too noisy, and any disappointment I feel is more emotional than to do with it's performance. So for safety reasons, despite the price tag, I would recommend this product.

My fan was in poor condition
20 March 2022

TLDR: Fan came in poor packaging with scratches and even booger-like smears on the bottom. Return process was a hassle but finally got it with the help of the Best Buy Team. Now though, the seller wants me to remind them when the return arrives in their hand and to ask for my refund again... wasting more of my time. I will not buy from Marketplace sellers anymoreStory time:I just finished a long return process with "Dyson Official Outlet"My fan came in a box with no foam or bubble wrap protecting the pieces. Everything was scratched up to the point where the paint was chipped and you can see the metal.Worst of all, the bottom of the fan had some booger-like smears. Which doesn't make sense to me because if you receive it, you should know that you received it right away. I I don't want to waste my time monitoring the package and then chasing my money again. They haven't responded so what I can do...

Overpriced and overhyped. Very disappointed.

I bought this Dyson fan during the heat wave last week to replace a 30 year old standing fan made by Sunbeam, which is still going strong if a little outdated.First let me say the Dyson is no better than my 30 year old Sunbeam. It doesn't produce a cooler breeze and it isn't any quieter than my old fan. No doubt it is more stylish, but beyond that, I can't see any advantage to having a fan with blades at a fraction of the price.Having said that, I haven't tested the heater yet, so perhaps it will come up to scratch in the winter. My old fan could be placed about 8 ft from the bed and it would give a nice cool breeze. The Dyson has to placed on a stand not further than about 3 feet from the bed to get the same effect. It simply doesn't have the reach of a bladed ... MoreI bought this Dyson fan during the heat wave last week to replace a 30 year old standing fan made by Sunbeam, which is still going strong if a little outdated.First let me say the Dyson is no better than my 30 year old Sunbeam. The Dyson has to placed on a stand not further than about 3 feet from the bed to get the same effect. It simply doesn't have the reach of a bladed fan.2 major design flaws in my opinion:1) the blue and white indicator light on the front is very bright at night and should be dimmable. It isn't and the only solution is to put tape over it so it doesn't light up the room. However this obscures the speed of the fan.2) the buttons on the remote control gadget are stylishly flat so that it can attach by magnet to the main consul when not in use. However, because the buttons are flat, it is impossible to distinguish one button from another at night. So if you wake up at night and want to turn the fan off with the remote, you have to turn your bedside light on to see which button on the remote to press. My old fan had a remote that had actual buttons on it, so you could feel which button was the 'on/off' switch, or the 'swing' switch, and so it was easy to operate it in the dark. WIth this stylishly flat button remote, you can't even feel the button with the tip of your finger so you have to switch the light on to see which button to press. This is very annoying indeed.Dyson really should do better product testing.

Worst Ever Fan One Can Have
28 March 2020

We bought this fan (AM09) in the hottest summer weeks in 2018 when my husband was in Addenbrookes Hospital. There were not enough ventilation and fans in the ward(s). Patients, health workers, nurses, doctors, and the like were suffering from the hot wave. All fans in and around Cambridge were sold out. It was the last fan in John Lewis, and I thought it was our luck to have got it. Unfortunately, later we found out that it was very noisy and did not provide a quiet, tranquil environment for the people in question.Since the fan was so noisy, it was not ideal to use it again in the Care Home where my husband was moved to in late 2018. During the hottest month in 2019, I managed to get a £20 German-made fan at a Cambridge store with almost no noise at all while operating. The AM09 Dyson fan sat in a corner ever since my husband moved out from Addenbrookes. With dismay, when I visited my sister in February, I came to know that Dyson HP04 Pure Hot + Cool Fan Heater Air Purifier she owns is very quiet, no noise at all. Nothing like AM09.I contacted Dyson, they checked through the fan, and could not do anything about its noise. It is a fundamental design fault of AM09 which cannot produce the same effect of Dyson HP04. I thought of leaving the matter, but tonight when I tried it on again, the noise incited me to report here and to warn other customers -- If you want a quiet fan, DON'T buy this one, a real money waster.

surprised at the quality

I once had a Dyson fan before, which was a fan function only, which left me really disappointed as it was a poorly functioning fan compared to Highstreet fans that would only cost £20.While this heating and cooling fan is just wonderful. I live under the roof of a big house and hence struggle with cold winters and hot summers and since I have the Dyson I can actually make the most of my room and really enjoy spending time there. My room heats and cools down very quickly, also the temperature setting really helps to keep a steady temperature. On top of that I love that you can choose to heat / cool the entire room or only one area, so brilliant. For me the special treat is the remote as it allows me to turn the fan on as soon as I wake up.The only downside for me ... MoreI once had a Dyson fan before, which was a fan function only, which left me really disappointed as it was a poorly functioning fan compared to Highstreet fans that would only cost £20.While this heating and cooling fan is just wonderful. For me the special treat is the remote as it allows me to turn the fan on as soon as I wake up.The only downside for me is the noise, not so much when it is on and running as one expects noise from a fan, however when the product is on standby when the room temperature is reached, you can hear a little standby noise that is a little uncomfortable hence I sometimes end up turning the fan off just to cancel the noise out. This however is only noticeable when you have no background noise or music playing, so most of the time not noticeable. All together I highly recommend it and would purchase it again :)
